I'm just one person working on this game and you can get in touch with me in the Lone Fungus Discord : http://discord.gg/dgapCNF

I'll do my best to answer any questions about the game, listen to your feedback and show what I'm working on next for the game!

About the Game

Lone Fungus is a true Metroidvania set in a world built by mushrooms where you play as the last mushroom alive. Explore an ancient world, acquire new abilities and discover secrets!

Exploration

There exist ten distinct areas for you to explore, each with its own unique set of enemies and obstacles. If you are willing to scour every nook and cranny in each area, you'll uncover plenty of secrets and receive well-deserved rewards. Through your exploration, you will earn significant upgrades in the form of Relics, Emblems, and upgrades to your Health or Mindpoints. These upgrades will undoubtedly be valuable to any player. To learn more about these upgrades, check out the combat section!

Features

- Explore a huge interconnected world gated with true Metroidvania progression.

- Fast and responsive combat, play as an acrobatic mushroom!

- A spell system based on how you strike spells with your sword, giving spells multiple uses and a creative approach to combat.

- Unique and challenging platforming gameplay reminiscent of modern platformers such as Celeste but set in a fully open world. *optional*

- Play the game how you want! Pick between four difficulty modes or use the accessible Assist Mode!

Combat

The Combat in Lone Fungus is simplistic but has depth in terms of customization. You can for instance parry anything that would normally would damage you, but parrying incoming projectiles in particular will shoot them back at foes. You are however never forced to parry and you can even change how the parry system works by equipping Emblems!

Emblems are items you will find all over the world. Equipping an Emblem might change how the parried projectile behaves, for instance, you can make it home into enemies but deal less damage. Or instead of bouncing a projectile off your cap you will do damage to anything near you. There is even a Vortex Emblem which destroys multiple projectiles around the player.

Upgrades and Build customizations

In addition to Emblems, there are Relics that work very similarly to the Charm system in Hollow Knight. Some change how your healing works and others increase your sword damage or give you additional protection. There are 60 Relics in the game and you choose what your strengths will be through the Relics. You can make some really specialized builds focusing on defense, healing, speed, melee attacking, or spell-casting!

And then there are permanent upgrades that you gain from fighting bosses, these are all from spells to new moves and types of attacks!

Bosses

In Lone Fungus, you can challenge and defeat 28 bosses to acquire new abilities. My goal is to design engaging and equitable boss battles that can be won without sustaining any damage from the boss. To achieve this, I craft distinct attack patterns for each boss and provide clear cues before their strikes. Additionally, I limit the randomness of their attacks. My aim is to provide an enjoyable and stimulating experience where players can triumph over bosses by mastering their techniques.

Platforming

Lone Fungus is essentially a precision platformer, but it doesn't compel you to undertake overly difficult platforming tasks in order to advance in the game. Instead, all the platforming challenges are confined to optional side rooms, allowing you to relish the game as a Metroidvania-style adventure game focused on combat and exploration, while still benefiting from the precise controls of a precision platformer. However, if you're inclined to master the game's hardcore mechanics, there are practice rooms available for you to refine your skills and take on the most daunting platforming challenges that the game has to offer.

Play the game how you want!

The game features 4 difficulty modes, several ways to customize controls (like a dedicated down-attack button), and a full-featured Assist-Mode!

The Assist-Mode allows you to turn on 6 different features which will drastically make the game more accessible.

Platforming Pause - Increases the pauses between platforming mechanics like Mushmovers, giving you a larger room to react and breathe in between platforming sections.

Magic Platforms - Adds special platforms to some sections in the game to make them much easier.

Worldmap Hints - Will show items you have missed in rooms you have already visited.

Stronger Sword - Increases your sword's base damage, allowing you to beat bosses easier.

Infinite MP - Play without having to manage your Mindpoints, heal and cast spells as much as you want!

Invincibility - You cannot die!

Keep in mind that the Assist-Mode is not only for players that might think the game is too tough but it can also be used to just mess around and have fun with the game in your own way!

Loving it! It's a near perfect mix of Celeste and Hollow Knight in my book. Don't get me wrong though, this game has so much different from both. Platforming is insanely complex sometimes (mostly in late-game areas, and optional ones too), bosses can be a bit of a challenge. Don't forget about spells too! They can deal insane damage when needed. There's tons of nonlinear aspects, though keep in mind that one area might be entirely inaccessible until coming back later with new abilities. There's also immense variety in the relics available, so you can do what you want! Also don't forget to pin things; pins can be extremely helpful for backtracking (if you want some solid completion). My only critique, and it's a small one at that; is that most bosses names are rather dull. Just "Big ___" for example. Edit: Some sort of guiding help would be nice (even if very small), I spent a very long time looking for a single very necessary upgrade I was missing. Edit 2: True 100% is absolutely AWFUL. There are so many extremely hidden rooms/astral doors that it seems practically impossible to find absolutely everything without at least a glance at a guide. Don't even get me started on the solitary mindshroom in the underground/the one atop the tall funnel in the tunnels; they're incredibly hard to get. Overall/TLDR (opinion, not fact): Combat: 9.5/10 Platforming: 9/10 Challenge: 6/10 (provided you utilize spells well) Story: 6/10 (alright, just a bit too scattered about to be understood easily) Completion: 2.5/10 (I do not at all recommend getting true 100%.) Do pick it up if you love Celeste and/or Hollow Knight!

His game is nothing short of amazing. It's a true metroidvania, with a massive open world and really interesting abilities that work in weird ways. Not to mention classic ability gates. You will get lost, and you will love it. Controls are tight and have a heavy emphasis on platforming, With some really cool game tweaks you can use if you want less of a challenge and want to explore without achieving the high skill ceiling that is possible in this game. I really want to see what speedrunners can do when it comes to the platforming mechanics. Long story short, I really recommend this game.

---see where this game landed on my metroidvania tier list beneath this review!--- This game ranges from easy, to very, very difficult, depending on whether you want to do the challenge rooms and 100% the game. For Bosses, they went quantity over quality. Not to say that these bosses are bad as a whole, just that none of them were particularly memorable. It's a tradeoff and I didn't mind this. The map is decent, and once you hit endgame it will help to reveal some secrets, though you do have to go back through pretty much every room still to find them. Exploration is very metroidvania, with many different paths to different places. Lone Fungus is heavy on the platforming. The wall jumping and controls are okay, but for beating the trickier optional parts they are actually infuriating. I feel like the challenge is created in large part due to these controls. For instance, to wall jump you need to attack in the direction of the surface, and you will frequently be switching direction between jumps, and quite often having to attack a wall or platform multiple times a second to boost off of them. On top of that, there's multiple buttons for different jumps/attacks and the whole thing just feels like a crap shoot a lot of the time. It really does have that precision platformer thing if you dig that, but for me, it was more pain than enjoyment. There were also some crazy use of abilities to fully explore the map, where you would have to chain jumps off of spells in very fast succession which I found to be needlessly agonizing to utilise. The game doesn't do much to help you work out how to use these properly either. I'm sure some players will like these controls and argue they aren't bad, but for me, they felt needlessly finicky. I actually finished the game 100% just to feel accomplished, but it was pain. I'm not mad keen on the graphical style or the music, but they were fine enough. I enjoyed the game overall, despite punishing myself endlessly. If you enjoyed the harder sections of this game, also check out another metroidvania: Aeterna Noctis. It's full of punishment but is very well done comparatively. ===================== My Metroidvania Tier List (excluding Metroid & Castlevania titles) ===================== S Tier: Monster Boy and the Cursed Kingdom | Astalon: Tears of the Earth | Aeterna Noctis | Hollow Knight | Cathedral | A Tier: Ender Lillies: Quietus of the Knights | Depths of Sanity | Environmental Station Alpha | Ori and the Will of the Wisps | Treasure Adventure Game | B Tier: Outbuddies | Alwa’s Legacy | Blasphemous | Chasm | Rabi-Ribi | Monster Sanctuary | Elliot Quest | Mortal Manor | Haiku, the Robot | C Tier (enjoyed playing): Bloodstained: Ritual of the Night | Death’s Gambit | Momodora: Reverie under the Moonlight | Wuppo | Catmaze | Aggelos | Omega Strike | Iconoclasts | Lone Fungus | D Tier (was ok but didn’t do it for me): Castle In The Darkness | Gato Roboto | 8 Doors | La-Mulana | Pharaoh Rebirth | Axiom Verge | Bone Appetit | Guacamelee | Grime | Strider | E Tier (Didn’t like): Rain World | Dandara | Minoria | Blaster Master Zero | Sundered | Salt & Sanctuary | Valdis Story | Dust: An Elysian Tale | Yoku’s Island Express | ====================

I grabbed this game after seeing many favorable comparisons to both Hollow Knight and Celeste, games I greatly enjoyed. On the plus side, the game is similar to them. On the downside, it lacks the charm of either. Things I liked: Metroidvania style game with a unique setup Map was sectioned well and is visually appealing A variety of abilities that do different things Things I disliked: Combat feels like a less good version of Hollow Knight. It lacks the polish and responsiveness that made combat in that game feel great. Secrets passages on the map were incredibly obscure at times. Little to no visual indication that there might be something different there leaves you jumping and slashing at walls hoping you'll find something. The platforming is incredibly clunky. This is even on the latest version as of writing that optimizes the wall jumps. Hit boxes at times feel inconsistent when dealing with obstacles in the platforming which can lead to what feels like an unfair restart. Some puzzles require what feels like pixel perfect timing for some sections and then other parts of the same puzzles are so loose you can cheese them. The spells in the game feel very secondary outside of occasionally solving a puzzle that requires them. Most platforming puzzles don't even allow you to use them. Using them in combat was often more effort than it was worth. While they were quite damaging, typically the best strategy ended up being to just attack with your sword, heal, and repeat. The relics also tend to be mostly middling. Once you find the right combo, bosses go from challenging to a cake walk and it becomes hard to justify using other relics. While Hollow Knight had me switching out relics for the right situation, I found myself sticking to the same sets just because the others weren't worth the cost or demerit of losing the currently equipped set. In general if you're desperate for a Metroidvania and you've exhausted all of your other options, it's an overall OK game. The story isn't bad, but it isn't fantastic either. I realize that this was a dev team of one person, but I think in general the game needs more polish. I think that there could have been something unique here if only it hadn't leaned so heavily into struggling to copy Hollow Knight and Celeste. It really feels like a miss for a game that could've stood on its own merits instead of feeling like a sluggish clone.
