An interesting rogue-like dungeon crawler. Aesthetically it looks like Darkest Dungeon; combat plays out in dungeon crawler first-person, and it's a point and click when it comes to overworld and map movement. You choose from 5 starting classes. Each with skill trees which consist of active and passive skills. Unlocking one leads to two other choices next, so on and so forth. There's also random favours, which last until you exit dungeons; the favour being a perk. There's an immense amount of gear slots, 14 for which I can tell. What I like: Feels pretty polished Lots of gear and customization What I don't like: No options by default until you're in the game - the sound needs to be turned down - it's ear bleeding loud Super slow movement No easy way to tell where you're supposed to go Equiping seems bugged as you have to drag and drop into slots. And, because of the item descriptions hover, it's hard to see what slots items belong in sometimes. It's an interesting meld. So far the combat is enjoyable and the amount of gear is crazy. Recommended right now.

Great turn-based rpg that reminds me of old rpgs. Its great to have a game not baby you on what to do or where to go. The developer is also great

(updated after beating the game with 2 classes) Graphics and ambiance are 10/10 if you enjoy the style. The gameplay can be good or bad depending on the difficulty and class you pick. The game is currently being updated daily, and balance is being tweaked in various ways. At least until the updates slow down I'd recommend experimenting with the difficulty level (you can change it at any time in game) to find a point where you need to use all your skills, potions, the timeline etc. If the difficulty is too easy you can win fights by using just one attack repeatedly and ignoring consumables, the timeline and most of your skills. If you do that the game is going to feel very shallow and boring. Several negative reviews appear to be due to this. The game can be a lot deeper than it first appears, if you crank the difficulty up. I've tried two classes so far, Asmodeous (life steal tank) and Leviathan (mage, who I focused on crits via gear) and they played very differently. Overall I think it's a fun game for short sessions, but due to the simplicity it's not currently the type of game you want to invest much time or effort into. I didn't feel compelled to explore all the classes, optimize builds etc.

I don't usually do day 1 reviews, but holy cow this game is awesome. Great aesthetic, great sound, satisfying combat. It's Diablo but in first person and you're playing an oldschool pen-and-paper rpg.

This game. Has no options menu. You know, the place where you adjust volume. I cant tweak the volume settings? Is this a feature? Meant to simulate gaming Hell? This is horrible! I dont know! Thumbs up cuz its evil I guess... EDIT: Lost my save. Well, its there but when I choose to load it I get stuck in the loading screen. RIP. Good game. Released a bit raw. Shouldve waited a year before trying it out as to avoid game wrecking events like destroyed save files. Thumbs down because I dont have it in me to grind all the way to where my last save was. Maybe next year.

EDIT: really impressed by the fixes the devs have been pumping out, obviously putting in the effort A really fun dungeon crawler. Basically what I wanted when I saw Darkest Dungeon (though they aren't THAT similar). Really awesome art style, story is meh but killing demons is fun. Map movement and UI is a little clunky in places, but nothing that got in the way of my enjoyment. Combat is interesting, and the progression feels impactful. My main run is on the spellcaster class, which feels very powerful. Before that I tried the bleed centric class (asmodan I think) and that felt harder but more strategic). Looking forward to trying out the others

Notice, this was written prior to update v1.2 and v1.4 that might have rectified a lot of the complaints...

Hellslave has unfulfilled potential - which is a dreaded term, especially in a released game. It requires a more readable and comfortable UI/UX experience - there are a lot of obtuse and illogical interactions and design in most of the interfaces. In the storage chest, the 'LMB/RMB' interactions do not work despite the tooltip stating otherwise, so dragging items is needed. After each battle or loot interaction, the inventory opens and one has to do some tedious management - missing sell junk features, animation skips, clear distinction of what items are good, bad, or important crafting materials etc. In the skill tree, learning and unlearning skills are separated into two different buttons instead of just being 'LMB/RMB', so there is a lot of moving back and forth with the mouse. It seems that one must unlearn a skill to remove it from the hot bar instead of just dragging it off. In the sub-categories of the skill tree, on something called 'Momentum' and 'Postures', the skills are dragged/undragged into slots instead. Gameplay-wise, While there are a lot of skills, both passive and actives, most of the active ones are boring enough that it would be better off having them as passives. I cannot be bothered clicking the skill although it is advantageous to do so. In the instance of skills that require a 'Critical Hit' before it can be cast, the experience would be a lot better if it was a passive with automatic execution on said requirement. Some adjustments to the strength of the bonuses would be required, but I'd rather have a weaker version than a bloated hot bar and needing to press ten instant casts each turn. Movement - random encounters seem unnecessary and seem to exist just to justify the existence of the 'Stealth' mechanic which is a button press to avoid random encounters for ten seconds. You can apparently sprint by double-clicking around, but that feels inconsistent and also tedious. I do not tend to write reviews because it feels opinionated - which it is - so keep the short 'time played' in mind, but also that those sparse two hours made me bored enough to write a review. Edit: Finished the game on hardest difficulty, it was not a particular fun experience, but the developers seem to be active in fixing complaints, so I wouldn't disregard the game in its entirety, it's just very flawed and monotone as it stands... which may or may not get better over time.

After completing the game, I've decided to not recommend it. The game is not bad, but it is too unrefined, which hinders its potential. A few of the negative points:

The combat feels sluggish with unnecessary pauses between actions. Actually, the whole game lacks responsiveness.
The combat is basic and every fight feels the same. There are no tactics, just repeating the same set of abilities.
Furthermore, the game is not challenging and the final boss was unimpressive (but I haven't tried new game plus).
No explanation what the starting "classes" mean.
To answer the above, you only gain different stats during level up. The skills are the same, but in a different order.
Because of this: little replay-ability.
The whole skill tree feels unrefined too, e.g. many skills are not worth it and skill progression is unsatisfying.
There is a bug where you can exploit getting to any skill instantly by unlearning the previous one.
You get way too much (crappy) equipment after every fight. Also, the rarity doesn't make sense. This makes getting (good) loot feel less satisfying.
UI navigation needs improvements too, like a hotkey to quickly swap items between your inventory and your chest or ESC bringing up the option menu (instead of "O").
No story or interesting encounters, but, to be fair, I wasn't expecting this anyway, for a game like this.
English translation is a bit wonky at times.
Yeah, some points are nitpicks, but it's about the experience as a whole and that was too flawed.

Game is legit in terms of simplicity and what it tries to achieve. Great art and vibe, story isn't too shabby either. Me gusta. 9/10

The art style and atmosphere is really well done, The skill trees seem varied enough, but the loot variety is really lacking. It seems like we keep finding the same items even early on. The game tries to look like it's open-handed with the way you move around the map, but it's very much a hard linear story. Rest assured that everything will be locked until you spoke to the right npcs with ! above their head. Don't ever bother thinking "maybe I should go there", nothing will happen there until someone tells you to go there. You basically only ever do what you get told and rarely have more than 1 relevant place to go to. I still get the impression that there's a lot of passion behind the project, but unfortunately it didn't turn into something too terribly enjoyable for me. The game seems like it's short enough for me to finish it just to see where the story goes, but there's no way I could see myself replaying this title, and I wouldn't have played it at all had I known what I was getting into.
