About the Game

Hunt down monsters to cook and eat them! You’ve been revived in a massive underground complex and you must leave this bizarre facility. Aided by the undead Necro-Chef Simmer, you must stay safe, get fed and find a way to get out.

Dungeon Munchies is a side-scrolling action RPG with a focus on hunting down creatures, cooking them, and eating dishes to gain certain abilities. The combination of dishes you choose to eat will impact your entire play style.

Features:

Big Menu for a Big Stomach

With a stomach that can only take seven dishes, you must put together a meal that maximises your abilities. Guava juice, grilled shrimp, or crab stirfry may mean the difference between health recovery, damage output or a watery shield.

Tools of the Trade

Craft all kinds of deadly weapons out of the animal and plant parts you can't eat. Pair them with your favorite dishes to create the most overpowered combat combo.

Farm-fresh & Locally-sourced

In this day and age, ingredients are hard to come by. You should be prepared to face off electrical snails, razor-sharp shrimp claws, and laser wasps to get the delicious parts you need.

Something Doesn’t Feel Right...

From the self-professed-AAA-license-holding necro-chef, to the diabolical voodoo “Lord of the Forest”, to the radical revolutionaries of the fruit revolution, everyone wants you to do their thing, but no one's really right in the head. What’s really happening down in this dungeon?

Pros: + Fantastic character/monster design + Buildcrafting. Nuff said. + Combat hits juuuust right + Some pretty hilarious dialogue + Solid story (if not disturbing at times lol) + How could I forget the wonderful music?!? Cons (kinda): - Some builds can make the game a bit easy, at least on Sous Chef difficulty - Controller support needs some work Overall: I had ZERO regrets playing and finishing this game. Great job, maJAJa!

Dungeon Munchies is an interesting game. At first it looks like nothing more than you usual unity-engine sidescroller. Sure the art looks funny, but nothing to write home about. But then you see all the positive reviews, and you go "sure, why not, worth a try". You carry that same air of ambivalence to the first few parts of the game, the stages seem basic and the combat is nothing to write home about. The characters seem a little cool, you guess, but not worth getting attached to. Seems a little overblown by those reviews. But oh. The game continues. Combat? A min-maxer's dream. Platforming? Mario odyssey eat your heart out. Story? THE STORY? Every expectation you didn't have about this unassuming title is blown out of the water. You are making connections and firing neurons and that damn art and writing just gets better and better with every level. You are scrounging each level for the secrets and extra weapons not because you'll use them but because of how good this goddamn game is. Each character is a close personal friend and you want to see them succeed and thrive. You have gone through the five stages of grief and your own ego death and come out the other side as a true appreciator of Dungeon Munchies, and what can you possible do after all that? Well, you can make a review like this one.

Exceptional Dungeon Munchies is a side scrolling dungeon crawler with flavor. And yes, pun intended. You awaken by means of necromancy by the necro-cook Simmer. And you're put straight to work! You make your way through the massive underground facility, fighting creatures along the way. Each creature drops items you can use to cook with. And each cooked or crafted item is added to your inventory or abilities for use and lasts forever. This unique pixel art game has humor and life that isn't all that common today. The game play is tight and responsive. There are a lot of things to fall in love with here! I hope you enjoy!

What. The. Hell. I expected: Dungeon Meshi, Happy anime treats, metroidvania with some cooking elements and wacky weapons! What I got: Junji Ito's Body Horror Nightmares given flesh. And bone. And vegetable. Twists, Turns, a giant SCP, several SCPs, more nightmare fuel, earnest tales of loss, revolution, coups and realpolitik. And all that only covered chapter one and half of chapter two. You owe it to yourself to play this incredibly odd, heartfelt, amazingly weird and horrific game. Go for easy mode if you have to, but you have got to see how this ride goes, and where it ends. It is a dish that is so very much more than the sum of its ingredients.

(Editing in my chapter 2 Opinions below my original review) Dungeon munchies was an unexpected gem I found while browsing the up and coming tab. Combat was easy to pick up, story was decent and the food mechanic was quite interesting. Though for all the praise I will give this game, there are some flaws in it (note: this is still early access, so some of these problems might get fixed later on). PROS: - combat is easy to pick up and the difficulty of mobs and bosses scale really well. - all of the enemies in the game has its own unique charm. Personally, I love fighting the final boss. - the game isn't too "grindy" compared to other titles. - the comedy might be a hit or miss for some people, but it gives the story a decent amount of flavor. - the food buffs appearing on your character is a pretty nice touch. CONS: - music was good, but wasn't really memorable in my opinion. - since its early access I won't be too harsh, but its really disappointing that you can cheese the 2nd boss by manipulating its ai using dashes - this game is made for mouse and keyboard, using controller in this game is possible, albeit harder. Had to switch to mouse and keyboard on the final fight. - story was pretty "eh" most of the time, didn't pay much attention to the story until the end where they forcibly fed you all the information in one go. All in all, I think its worth the price. Yes it may be incomplete as of now but the amount of content you do get more than makes up for the money you spent on it. I might have missed some details in my review, but I will probably address those when the game is finally finished. CHAPTER 2 REVIEW Although it took a while, chapter 2 has been released! New recipes, enemies, and bosses to experiment and play around with. Gameplay has stayed pretty much the same, but the devs added new weapons and mechanics and the tone of the story shifted drastically compared to the first one. (Similar to my previous review, ill add a pro and con to quickly summarize the changes.) PROS: - Combat has been improved with the addition of new recipe buffs and upgrades, giving viability to other styles of combat. - The "gun" archetype is a nice addition, albeit a bit too powerful in my opinion. - Some of the newer bosses are incredibly fun. My favorite of the bunch is mercury one, a unique bosses that changes between arena battle and side scrolling platformer depending on its current phase. - the story is better paced this time, giving the player time to digest the information rather than shoving it all in one go like last time. - some of the newer tracks are a banger. CONS: - the game is still a bit buggy. In my playthrough of the second chapter, I abused the "reload" glitch. - the comedy from the first half of the game was toned down by a lot (this can either be a positive or a negative) - the balance scaling is not great. The difficulty between the first escort quest (hard) and the first 2 bosses after(easy) is quite jarring. - more into balance scaling, some bosses are just glorified damage sponges. - the game is still made for mouse and keyboard. Overall, I think the second chapter was great. It gave better insight on the overall goals of the main cast and was better at world building compared to the previous chapter. It has a few bugs and problems here and there, but combat has greatly improved. I would still recommend this game and it's still well worth its price.

TL;DR: It’s alright, 20 USD as of coming out of early access for something you’ll finish in a playtime of 10-20 hours. Personally recommend picking this up on sale. Context: Followed the game's updates for a few years casually after watching a playthrough of the first chapter during early access. Played both major story updates when they came out during the early access period, and it’s been more or less the same, a solid 2D hack and slasher. Gameplay: Gameplay itself is as stated, a solid 2D linear metroidvania-lite with an assortment of standard faire melee, ranged, and magic options available to you. Along with a perk, “magic food”, system to give you modest build variety of your preference. Whether you settle into a favored niche of a dual-wielding blender, out of kilter crab cyborg mage, or dual wielding shotguns. A few personal gripes with the gameplay: - The semi-frequent double/triple jumping doesn’t work as intended. Extra jumps simply gain you no height and you just "spurt" in place. - In fights with tons of magic particle effects flying on the screen make it occasionally hard to keep track of what’s going. (Skill issue for some maybe.) :^) - On exceptionally rare occasions it feels as though some weapon/perk builds may or may not have their numbers bugged when in the midst of the hectic action going on the screen, almost as if the game struggles to work through it all at once. Story: Story is delivered to you via Visual Novel-esque text at certain points of the story. It’s cute, comedic, grows dark and edgy, then grows into waxing philosophical existential crises. If you like the art on the store page, you’ll get more of it as you play through the story. Stability/Port: No major issues on my end from playing on my old intel CPU and GeForce RTX 1070 system during multiple points in Dungeon Munchies early access. Same deal today, no issues on my stronger rig using a mid-range CPU and 3070 GPU, granted this game has the graphical intensity of a Newgrounds flash game. If you skimmed through any of this, hope it helps informing you on whether you'd like to try this game out for yourself, take care and take it easy.
