If you're going to play w/controller (like you probably should) and you have problems with commands involving rotating the right joystick IT IS AN EASY FIX: with your controller connected, right click the game in your library and go to Manage > Controller Configuration, then click Right Stick ABS > Advanced Settings > Additional Settings and set "Dead Zone Outer" to it's MAXIMUM. Now it'll play exactly like it was meant to for console and you can appreciate it for all it has to offer Devs ought to make this change the default, but hey now you can have fun with the game :)

Well, it probably was a great game 11 years ago. Now it is good but not great. the main issue is the clunky controls and the sometimes confusing quicktime events. I played Detroit Become Human then this. Wrong order. Play this first, then Detroit. My five cents.
-How many cliches do you want mr. Cage? -Yes
I love narrative games so my opinion in this might be a little biased and I obviously recommend this game. It doesn't come without flaws but we get so little of such games that i'm happy even if it's not perfect. Heavy Rain is an interactive-drama thriller. The Origami killer is kidnapping children and drowning them. One of the main character's son disappears and father who's name is Ethan gets a message from killer demanding him to take tasks in order to save his son. Killer is testing Ethan's courage and Ethan must decide how far he will go in order to save his son. Besides Ethan there are more main characters. An FBI agent Jayden who's suffering from drug addiction was sent to investigate the murders. A journalist Madison who's suffering from (PTSD?) starts investigating the murders too. Then there's Shelby, a private detective making his own investigation. Lauren, a mother who lost her child to origami killer plays a role too but she's not playable. Overall characters are interesting enough, I just wish the game would delve deeper into their psychology. The story or maybe the idea is really cool. The whole mystery, plot twist, atmosphere, basically the whole thriller aspect is very good. But it falls short when it comes to execution, acting and writing. While the story itself is amazing the writing is not so good. The whole game, especially the first half is so cheesy, cliché, cringy whatever you call it that it's not even funny. I've noticed same thing in Detroit too but not as severe as in Heavy Rain and Cage has improved a lot with later games. But when it comes to story itself it's a real pleasure to experience it. The game is pretty bleak and dark, tackling some serious issues. Maybe at some points the story makes no sense but before you play it you need to put yourself in a certain mindset. Look at this as it was a movie not a game, imagine yourself as an observer who can slightly change the flow of the movie rather than imagining you as certain character. You play as each character depending on the chapter. Gameplay is pretty straightforward. You explore the tiny surroundings a bit, pick up evidence, talk with people and do qte's, lots of qte's. All action scenes are a series of qte's. I know many people hate those but I honestly can't imagine a game like this without qte's. It's better than just sitting and watching. There are difficulty settings so you could make qte's easier or harder. Some of them can be really tricky. There are lots of beautiful locations. Most of them are dark and quite depressive. Each chapter takes place somewhere else so you won't be stuck at the same location for 2 hours looking at the same textures. One minute you're exploring a crime scene and shortly after you're dealing with suicide. It's an old PS3 game so don't expect revolutionary graphics. Although when it came on PS3 it was pretty revolutionary. Great animations in general but face animations are lacking. It feels like at times they're working fine and other times it doesn't work at all. It's as if they ran out of budget or something because some parts of the game feel less polished than others. Other than animations the game looks great considering its age. Performance is good. The game is locked to 60fps unfortunately, but hey at least it's not 30fps. No ultrawide support. And I will repeat the same thing when writing about a narrative games – such games should have native ultrawide support. There can't be any excuses. It's called “cinematic experience” for a reason. Controls are ok. This should be played with a controller obviously. Mostly it's fine but sometimes when camera changes and you're on the “edge” of where it changes you might get stuck in a loop of going forward and backwards. But I have this issue with all similar games. Nothing too bad, controls are well executed in general. When it comes to sound it's good and bad at the same time. Phenomenal soundtrack is contradicted with poor to ok voice acting. Soundtrack is really something, it increases that thrill factor and throughout the game plays an important role by keeping the tension on. But voice acting...well it's a tough one. Again like i mentioned before talking about graphics it's inconsistent. At the beginning it's pathetic. It's like some amateur kids decided to make a movie. Its bad, laughably bad. Later on it somehow gets better as if actors taken acting lessons or got paid more. Some characters are acted better, some worse. Overall a good game for the fans of narrative games. It even could make you to do an origami or two. A very good story riddled with cliches and cheesiest moments in gaming history. It's dark, full of thrilling moments, sadness and despair and a really enjoyable ride. Pros

Good story
Amazing soundtrack
Good characters
Maintains tension at all times
Cons

Writing could be better
Poor voice acting for the most part
Cliche galore
Lacking facial animations
No native ultrawide support

Follow my curator page for more

Heavy Rain is a dark noir murder-mystery in a modern (2011) U.S. city.

[th]Rating[/th] [th]9/10[/th]

TL;DR If you've played Quantic Dream's other titles, this is their best one. Alternatively, if you haven't, this would be the one to start with. It's a focus on the narrative, with lots of Quick-Time events. Quantic Dream is historically a Playstation focused developer so with this you can expect the attention to detail similar to that of other PS exclusive titles. This title really is an amazing game and one of my all-time faves. I would love to give it a 10/10, but I drop a point for some weird acting at times.

https://steamcommunity.com/sharedfiles/filedetails/?id=2352663891
Setting
The city itself is unnamed but it's based somewhere in Philadelphia. The year is 2011, in October. All of the game takes place in the city area, made up of different environments, typically at night time or in rainfall weather with few people around to create a sense of isolation and mystery.
World Design
The world layout is just like their other titles. Each area is carefully crafted with a lot of detail in it's design. It's a linear experience so not an open world. Smaller locations with not a lot of freedom of movement. As the game focuses heavily on the storytelling, choices and characters, it is a straightforward experience as you go from level to level. In each chapter you'll interact with various items, clues and people. Be it talking to characters, finding evidence or quick time events.
Gameplay
The gameplay of Heavy Rain is fairly limited. It's an interactive drama game. The game is separated into chapters, each one having you play one of the rotating cast of characters. They all play similarly, control using basic movement and input prompts. Each chapter typically tasks you with interacting with things in the environment, these can be people or objects. As you near an object an input prompt will appear indicating the correct movement to be performed. Typically mouse movement for most things but button presses for more intense scenes. https://steamcommunity.com/sharedfiles/filedetails/?id=2351204642
Music
The music in this game is phenomenal. Comprising many different instruments, my favourite being the piano instrumentals in the more emotional scenes. The soundtrack was composed by Norman Corbeil (who also done Quantic Dream's other titles such as Fahrenheit), winning Heavy Rain two awards for it's original music. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=AEoj7dl9mXQ
Characters / Acting
Heavy Rain uses real actors for both the voices of characters and their motion capture acting. All interactions and movements are done by real actors. Interestingly, many of the cast for this title hadn't done any major acting work before this, typically smaller roles. This may sound like a red flag to some but they really pulled through with Heavy Rain. The acting is incredibly well done, both in it's motion and voicing. The main protagonist is played by Pascal Langdale. Watch this video if you're interested. Remember that this is just the casting and the acting in-game is much much better. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=95kV-vaBtPI
Story
Over the past few years someone called the Origami Killer has been abducting and killing young boys. The story takes place when the latest victim, Shaun Mars, has been kidnapped too. You play as a handful of different characters in this story. All of this tying together in this mystery as an FBI Agent, the cops and a journalist get closer to the truth, all while the father of the latest victim, Ethan Mars, undergoes challenging physical and mental trials, orchestrated by the Origami Killer, to save his son before time runs out. https://steamcommunity.com/sharedfiles/filedetails/?id=2350321963 Heavy Rain is a narrative masterpiece showcasing the stories of many characters. Each chapter giving more clues. Each clue giving more answers. While the game says a lot, it leaves you with two questions: How far would your father go to save you? and how far would you go to save your son?
