Britannia 機能

Britannia is the eponymous adaptation of the historical board game that broadly depicts the age-old conflict for control of Britain from 43 to 1066 A.D. Leave your mark on the island and take control of England, Scotland, and Wales.

Game mechanics

Britannia uses the same ruleset as the historical board game and relies on support from the original creators. Take control of a nation and issue strategic recommendations to move forward and gain the upper hand over your enemies.

Earn victory points by conquering and keeping territories, defeating enemy units, and being elected Bretwalda or King of England.

Key features

  • History

The game begins with the Roman invasion in 43 A.D., continues through the many conflicts between the Angles, Saxons, Picts, Norwegians, Scots, Irish, and other peoples, and ends with the Norman Conquest of 1066. Play as the rebellious Queen Boudica, legendary King Arthur, Danish King Knut, or William the Conqueror and leave a mark on the early history of Britain.

  • Strategic depth

Develop your nation, manage your army, and fight by choosing the battlefield that will lead you to victory. But that's just the beginning – numerous unique game mechanics await you in Britannia!

  • Alternate history

Take control of Albion's destiny! In Britannia, you can change the course of history and create diverse outcomes.

  • Scenarios and customization

Playable offline with 1 to 4 players across 3 scenarios, including the Roman invasion of 43 A.D., the 5th-century Germanic invasions, and the invasions from the North (by Danes, Vikings, and Normans) until around 1066.

  • A faithful adaptation of the board game

Lewis Pulsipher's masterpiece is brought to life in 2022 with the digital version thanks to Philippe Thibaut (Europa Universalis, Ageod, Avalon Digital games, SGS series).

This is a great adaptation of the board game. Very playable and enjoyable even in early access. Pros: - Learn history through reading about the 17 factions in the game. - Easy to learn yet strategic enough to reward good planning - Runs great and has good tool tips and interface - AI isn't outstanding but is decent - Great for singleplayer - Access to a great board game design at a much cheaper price than a physical copy -Aesthetic and art style feel great for the setting -You can do split screen and play with others on your device Cons: - AI could be stronger but Devs mentioned they plan to tweak and improve that. Over all this is a great adaptation and very ready for play despite early access. Definitely recommend if you enjoy the historical setting, and/or board game type video games. I should also mention that this version seems to be based on the 1986 version of Britannia by fantasy flight. That version is out of print and I believe fairly hard to find. So there is added value in that as well.

Britannia is one of my favorite board games, and I'm happy to see it on Steam. Up to now the game runs well, but there are still some problems. Bugs: 1. After moving units and before going into the next phase, saving and loading the game will make it unable to start battles. Both sides will just sit in the same area without battling. 2. When some nations (Norsemen and Normans for sure, and perhaps someone else that I haven't discovered) end moving, before starting battles, saving and loading the game will make those nations automatically gain Victory Points before even battling. (And of course they still have the Points even if they lose the battle.) 3. Sometimes Romans doesn't get his reinforce in Turn 4. (But it works well in Turn 2, 3 and 5.) 4. In Turn 4, sometimes Angles will be forced to remove a unit before his 3 units retreat to sea. The same happens to Danes in Turn 11. In a single game, 3 units of Danes didn't retreat to sea (but the other 4 units did). 5. In Turn 7, if Romano-British doesn't have any unit (I'm not sure if some more requirements are needed), his leader and knights doesn't come. 6. If the Scots doesn't hold any land after Turn 7, the unit which comes in Turn 8 will stay on the sea, but Scots doesn't have his turn to move that unit. In a game Scots gained its turn in Turn 13 and the unit on sea was finally able to move onto land, and in another game the unit stayed on sea until the game ended. 7. In Turn 14 Danes will always be forced to remove 4 units, no matter how many units has come. Additionally, if Danes already have all his units, Knut won't come and the Danes can't be the king, but he still have to remove 4 units. 8. In Turn 16 when Normans have reinforces, sometimes clicking on the sea doesn't work, and I have to save and load. Something else: 1. The AI plays too poor. 2. Some translations need improvement. 例如,第1回合罗马人登场的文本是“161支军团”,实际上每一个增援的文本都多了一个“1”字。 3. We want online games :)

The game has issues both with the game idea and the programme bugs. The game is an odd mix of historical campaigning and a board game but doesn’t do either well. The campaigning part is not real and the game tries to follow too many rules according to history. Unfortunately, the player (in this case, I) just wanted to win. Bring in the bugs and it gets comical. I played the game two times and had problems both times. To give an idea of how things deviate the first time I played it (as Romans/yellow player), Emperor Trajan came good for us, and let the legions stay. The legions did not change to Romano-Britains and Arthur, Offa and some of the others never turned up. Neither did some of the other characters and Nordic clans who decided to stay warm at home. When the Saxons turned up the coastline was covered by the legions. But that didn’t stop the Saxons who flew into Leeds/Bradford airport, bypassing any coastal district. The last bit was also bizarre, William the Conqueror versus the Roman Legions. Again, William and his army couldn’t land on the coast (Hastings was not available) so he flew into the interior. But after the Historic “Battle of Heathrow”, the Roman legions sent him packing (somewhere). I think that gives the idea for some of the game plan bugs. The idea of board-game doesn’t work either. What is the point of the dice when only one number (6) counts in the battle. The battles are done individually, so there is no point in stacking. In another game (Green player) one Welsh soldier defeated two Roman legions and a fort because the fights were not connected (unit strengths do not appear to add up). The stacking, the resources and the scoring are not understandable. Some nations never seem to earn enough points to have any additional units. The game machinery is also problematic. Almost every save resulted in a white screen which went onto (close programme/wait until…). The save is not in order of the time, so if you save a game under a used name, it does not appear at the top of the list when loading. The game can really do with a proper direct load command and ideally a quick-load command. After all, this game is easy to win, so long as you are prepared to load the game a few times and save regularly (after each event). I think a lot is needed before the game is enjoyable and in any way playable. I don’t think the board-game aspect lends itself to players disregarding the order of events as the publishers appear to want these processes to go according to plan (they don’t ). And so the bizzare errors happen. For me two times was enough and I can’t see me playing as a third colour.

Obligatory "I don't review a lot of games" (but I really don't)... anyway, I sat down and started playing this on a Saturday and didn't stop until I had finished the game 7 hours later -- mind you I would've kept playing, but the centuries of frenetic warfare had run their course, with many honorable warriors having met their end, one way or another, skewered on some soggy field or crowned in Valhalla, plus many other fates between. Really, I can't say enough good things about this gem of a game. If you're at all intrigued by the subject matter, get it now, carve out some uninterrupted hours, and summon your best strategic acumen. And in case I haven't recommended it highly enough, consider this: I spent an additional hour or so AFTER winning just to wonder over the final game board, review the manual, and think about the course of history implied by my particular game session. Pros: engaging history, cool battle mechanics, satisfying ebb and flow based on actual invasions and other twists of history, etc. ... in this game, you will not always be strong, sometimes you have to hold on and work with what's there Cons: none, I just want more content... either for this game or publish another title using the same mechanics but exploring different geography and history

Very well done implementation of a board game classic. The visuals are colorful, the music mood-setting, and the program bug free.

I played the Avalon Hill board game version of this over 35 years ago and still have it. This is a very faithful adaption of the board game, though of a slightly later version (more Leaders, yellow vs. purple faction, Saxon burghs). I've played through the full 16 turn game and really enjoyed it. It's great that each faction has multiple nations/groups- really keeps you engaged in the game as you go through the different eras. Very interesting simulation of 1,000 years of the history of the British Isles as one era's invaders become established and are in turn invaded by new groups later in the game. Plus having multiple groups of Vikings is always a plus (Norsemen, Dubliners, Danes, Norwegians). I definitely recommend this game to history and war game enthusiasts.

The game is very easy to pick up if you know the board game, even if you aren't used to playing computer games, and automates all the bean counting, allowing the player to focus on strategy. Highly recommended.

Really enjoying and easy to play. Game prompts for the builds and movements so playing moves along at a steady clip. Devs - any insight on when you expect multi player to be available?

I haven't started a game yet as I was hoping for a more complete product however, see discussions #83 under topic 'Bugs' where developer's statement included: "In all cases we won't release any new title until the early access of Britannia is closed. When this will be is still a bit unclear now, but for sure in the first part of 2023." So, it seems they've abandoned it in Early Access instead and wont respond to queries. Well worth a thumbs down. I notice too many games get abandoned in EA. (another example from this developer is 'Fleet Commander: Pacific')
