Devs listened to the feedback and are going to revert a lots of the changes people didn't like, despite all the works they put into it. Game seems better but most importantly, now we know devs listen, which is big in 2021.

Anyone looking at the reviews and wondering why a Very Negative score is present, it is due to a very poorly received patch. The developers listened to feedback and reverted alot of the ill received changes. The game itself is a party based deck building adventure where you have a set number of turns to strengthen your party via upgrading cards, getting artefacts, finding passives, adding new cards to your deck, and finding potions that have usable abilities per combat (really fun aspect as you bring three reusable potions in and they have various effects). After said turns a big boss appears then you can take on the bigger bad that is corrupting the land. The flow feels great and each character brings a unique playstyle or two to the battle. Mixing and matching to try to find the right combo's or a combo you didn't think of really adds to the replay ability. Runs don't take forever and that allows you to dive back in with haste to try new builds and characters. There is plenty here to justify jumping in the early access and the dev's are trying hard to make a game that appeals to everyone but are not afraid nor arrogant to admit they misstep and make corrections based on feedback. Throwing out this positive in hopes to let the devs know there hard work is appreciated.

This is a really solid deckbuilder, but I wasn't aware all the characters were furries until it was too late... now I'm a furry...

I've really tried to like this game. I played it in early access, and now tried it for maybe 8 or 9 runs in the 1.0 release. But it just isn't good. Quickly, the aesthetics of the game are wonky for a 1.0 release. Achievement screens will pop up randomly with no fanfare, obscuring the screen. The way the overworld UI and even the in-battle UI feels clunky and poor at conveying information. But really the gameplay just isn't very... good? I say that even having beat the first 2 extra levels of difficulty beyond normal. The enemy AI is way overtuned compared to your characters. Routinely you'll have huge amounts of damage thrown at you within a few turns but with so little inbuilt card draw, its insanely difficult to set-up and deal with stuff. Every enemy has more health than your heroes, and stronger attacks. Maybe they each only play 1 thing a turn, but anything they do is often stronger than any 1 or 2 things you do. For example, when enemies apply the truly damaging ongoing status effects of Poison, Hex, and Burn, they will apply it in huge quantities. Enemies will often have 3-5 multi-attacks for 15-40 damage. Normal fights can be fine, but the rewards are never strong enough on the timescale, so you're always looking to when you can manage elites or shard fights. But the defense fights are an absolutely bizarre inclusion in this sort of game. While its a neat idea to have a different kind of objective, its an objective that doesn't make any sense. You aren't asking your deck to do anything different, so the goal is simply... not to die? which is the goal every fight? And often in those fights, because they're only 4 rounds, you don't have enough time to kill the enemies. The lack of generic healing between fights feels absolutely crippling. Having at least one healer main character feels absolutely essential, because if you get the right fights, you can kill 2 enemies, and just defend against the other while one character spams healing for several rounds so you can get the team back to full. If you play a team without any healing or cleanse, I cannot imagine how you can survive. The setback for taking healing at the various locations vs other rewards is absolutely brutal. You lose so much tempo simply to not die, and it only makes it more likely you die later to the harder fights that have scaled up when you haven't. Playing cards is frustrating. There is no easy cancelling of a card play once selected; if you accidentally click into your lane or an adjacent lane for ranged cards, they'll still play. You have to drag the cursor to the edge of the screen. There is no undo button, which in of itself isn't crippling (slay the spire doesn't have an undo button) but the UI is so messy that its supremely easy to make mistakes. Every time a fight starts, you are given the option to reposition your team, but the text prompting you overlaps your hero, so if you accidentally click the text instead of the hero, you immediately go into the fight. How the button overlaps what you're meant to click on, feels like such a high school mistake to do. Further part of this repositioning seems to only have tactical value if you know what the enemy is doing first turn maybe? But you can't see their first card play, because clicking on anything other than your hero starts the fight. I think the game suffers from bloat. The 3 biomes don;t sound like much, but realistically you'll only spend time in 1 or 2 in every run, but there isn't any significant difference to each region. Oh sure enemy attack patterns may be slightly different, but Poison, Hex, and Burn act in exactly the same way. And the "starting run bonus" and "world quests" don't feel significantly incentivised to differentiate the areas. In addition to the biome enemies, artifacts are biome specific? While this can make for strategic planning for which heroes to take to which region, ultimately it ends up focusing your choices rather than opening them up. Its variety with clear pros/cons so it doesn't become much of a choice. I really want to like this game, but it still feels wildly imbalanced, a good update or two away from feeling like a functional, polished and professional UI, and the gameplay is just frustrating.

As a roguelike and card games enjoyer, the gorgeous art of the game and the gameplay of the game really pulled me in, I asked a Streamer under the alias of Tudututu, he said that the game is enjoyable and fun but it does have bugs here and there. From playing games like Hearthstone (Legend), Slay the Spire, Pokemon TCG, Yugioh and so on, I would say this game is really fun, challenging and the art is really outstanding. The game revolves around you controlling 3 heroes of your choosing and the variety is really what makes the game fun as they exist different combinations you can try and find (Hope the devs add more heroes and enemies!!). Each of these heroes have a deck containing 14 different cards which are able to be customised whenever you are in between fights or events. Each hero have around 2-3 different play style that you can build around them. Some fighter characters can be turned into a tankier bruiser, a burst damage dealer or even a support character. With that said, in a nutshell, you are controlling 3 heroes, travelling around the map to build decks that are free for you to create only limited to your gold or rng hehe. Characters are well varied and I can only see few exceptional ones that are a bit stronger than others but you really dont feel it as you rise up the levels. If you are familiar with Hearthstone, the game offers you different effects that will hit either you or the enemy, but fear not the game is easy to learn as they provide you all the details of the card effects during the gameplay that let you understand and take your time on what to do in each of your turn, they are few buffs and debuffs that even I forget sometimes even after beating few of the game's levels. Overall experience for a new player is well and good as they also let you play 2 easy levels (tutorials) for you to understand the gameplay of the game and how the mechanics work. The game IS a roguelike game and it requires few tries for you to eventually beat the game and they are 6-7? different levels of the game to make your runs even harder. Secondly, RNG is a thing in these kind of games, you don't expect for things to go your way but you try your best to filter out things so that it could at least head to where you want the game to be. Sometimes it's just not your luck that you are fighting things that counters your build. After all the game have a world to it where you can slowly explore and each of these places which have their respective creatures that have their own strengths and weaknesses to further spice your gameplay. You would get bumped out that things didnt go your way but thats just part of the game, get good :> Since the game have many levels, it can be replayed again and again, if you are really challenging yourself you can play all the hard levels, but if you are just theorycrafting decks, you can try the easier modes for you to further understand combos and cards. I would say this game would definitely be stuck with me for a while. The game still have bugs at the time of this review, I play this game on both pc and mobile and I have seen few bugs here and there where sometimes the card you didn't click are being targeted and potions being stuck on top of my heroes (mobile). I haven't had a severe bug or crashes and it barely needs a good system to run on. A good game for you to enjoy on your spare time or when you are queueing for another game. I would give this game a solid 9.5/10 for its new style of deckbuilding roguelikes and due to the bugs. The game really deserves more attention and it should be a nice start for people who are trying to get into this genre of games.

Writing as a 800+ hours Slay the Spire veteran and card battling deck building rogue-likes gamer. If Slay and Monster Train are "top tier" exemplars of deck-building rogue-likes, Arcanium is at the very least close to them in many ways. I rate it as at least as good as other excellent similar games, including Across the Obelisk, Tainted Grail and Blood Card 2. Highly commendable features include: 1. Fully featured 'adventure' and 'arena' modes, the former including free movement on a node-filled map enabling selection of encounters, these being battles of varying difficulty, events, shops, permanent boons and training. Put together, these allow a degree of customising your team only slightly less extensive than Monster Train, and far greater than Slay the Spire and many other games. Arena mode, meanwhile, removes the adventure component and progresses you through increasingly challenging fights, terminating at a boss fight, punctuated by opportunities to shop and train and heal. This offers a shorter, concentrated experience. 2. Fantastic variety and diversity. There are 12+ heroes each of which have unique cards, 'ultimate' abilities and equipment. Added to this is significant variety of permanent boons, other equipment, one-use items and deployable 'minions'. The variety is incredible. For examples, just one hero could be adjusted to focus on damage over time, support damage, healing or blocking, and you play with three heroes. 3. Highly tactical combat. You can always see what an enemy will do and there is no randomness. Your three heroes can move around between their lanes, and there are many, many synergies to find between cards, the order of cards played, equipment and movement. 4. Lots of meta-progression. Love it or love it, I love it, there is a lot to unlock through simple play. This includes new heroes to use, new cards for those heroes, new ultimate abilities, and there are many achievements to pursue. There are a few caveats worth being aware of too - 1. Some heroes have far greater utility than others at time of writing, including 'Angorn', which is a highly versatile support hero with strong block, healing and damage over time abilities. In my view, this is fine, as once you master the highest difficulty level with the 'better' heroes, you can enjoy more challenge by trying the same with other heroes. 2. At time of writing, nodes that have been identified on the adventure map lose their identification / tooltip after saving, exiting and reloading. This is only an issue until you begin remembering what each node icon stands for e.g., card upgrade, permanent boon etc, and is a minor niggle.

So I just completed all difficulty modes of this game under 30 hours. Also unlocked all chars accept for 1 (which is grindy and I'm not gonne bother since I completed all of the game already anyway). I'm a hardcore fan of the genre, and played 30+ games similar to this. My opinion? This is a very decent attempt at the genre! I whish the game was more, or that there was more to it, though. Overall very well made and would recommend to anybody who likes the genre. 8/10. Could go even close to 9/10 if there was a more fulfilling endgame or endboss after completing the full game on all difficulties.

So, it's a fun a game, however, it still feels incomplete or lacking. There are bugs, and they are reported. The devs haven't made an effort to fix them since their last patch which was a week after it's release. If you can get it cheap like 10 dollars or less, I'd say it could be worth. I have a ton of hours in it. So I did have fun, but I was working on making guides and helping others get better in the community. I was expecting them to expand the game because it's rather short or to at least fix some of the issues/bugs in the game. If they just fixed the bugs, I'd be happy. I don't like buying incomplete games. It just feels wrong, but like I said I was believing they had intent to fix it. I was so wrong.

The thing about card-based roguelites is that they all look the same. They have cards, and unlocks, and bright colors, and lots of status conditions, and they all look like clones. It's impossible to tell the good ones from the mediocre ones just by the marketing materials. Which is why I'm telling you: this one is good. Not the presentation. The characters are memorable and sweet — you play as a bunch of animals in the roles of fantasy tropes: a pyromancer fox, a paladin lion, a necromancer jackal; but the UIs make my eyes bleed a bit and the map is ugly. And the parts that look kinda pretty (like the cards themselves) are really bog-standard. The generic name that resembles another game does Arcanium no favours either. But the gameplay is just so much fun. Each class (of which there are 16 — a lot!) has a flexible identity. Their starting deck represents the core idea, but you can choose from three unlockable Ultimates to define the class. So the marksman owl can focus on finishers, or poison, or just huge damage numbers. The fencing cat can be more mobile or deal multistrikes. Combined with the number of classes, it'a a LOT of flexibility. Each attack also has an element to it. Battles have three lanes, and attacks have limits on who they can hit. This becomes crucial on higher difficulties where enemies obtain resistances and immunities to various enemies, and the need to juggle your team around becomes stronger. All manners of taunts, summons, status effects, and other conditions make fights deep. The exploration is much freer than in StS-likes. You have a hex-based realm and can explore any tile adjacent to the ones explored, moving in any direction. You do want to challenge yourself, of course; this is how you become powerful. Boosters come in packs, forcing suboptimal choices on you. Combined with unique items, this creates enough variety and depth to play this game for quite a while. The only downside I can think of is that the game starts off a bit too easy (but it has like a million of difficulty levels, so you'll quickly ramp up to the fun challenge) and that there are a bit too few items. But those are minor concerns. Don't be fooled by the mediocre presentation — Arcanium is absolutely worth the price tag if you like deckbuilders.
