About the Game

Aka Manto (赤マント Red Cloak), aka Red Cape or Red Mantle, is a Japanese urban legend about a masked spirit who wears a red cloak, and who appears to people using toilets in public or school bathrooms, specifically targeting young women. Accounts of the legend vary, but one consistent element of the story is that the spirit will ask the individual using a toilet a question. He will ask them if they want a red paper or a blue paper. If they choose the red, they will be lacerated in such a manner that their dead body will be drenched in their own blood. If the individual chooses blue, the person will be strangled to all of the person's blood being drained from their body.

Does a game have to be fun in order to be a good? Aka Manto | 赤マント. Aka Manto | 赤マント is not a fun game, but it is a good game. It is a difficult and unforgiving Japanese survival horror. The game has a relatively long plot, there are no save points, if you die you have to start over, you can only carry three items at any given time when there are dozens of items to use and pick up, and your vision is blurred due to a purposeful VHS aesthetic, making it hard to navigate. Two classmates have bullied you into exploring an abandoned school. The atmosphere is rich in texture and sound. Upon entering, you can immediately smell the old-porous wood, cough from all the dust clouds, and if you lend your ear to the wall close enough, you will hear the snickering of a large centipede roaming in between the walls and crawlspaces of the building. The ghost of Aka Manto, in addition, makes a horrifying high-pitch screech as it chases you down with their knife. Aka Manto | 赤マント is a game about disempowerment, hopelessness, and frustration. You have to make tough decisions with your item inventory. You have to keep a vigilant eye on your health because of the permadeath mechanic in this game combined with no save points. You have to constantly avoid spiders, a giant centipede, and a killer ghost in order to progress throughout the entire story. The game punishes if you are careless, making your walk speed slower and blooding the screen until its pitch red. Here is another question: Do you have to complete a game in order to curate it or give your opinion on it? After a little over two hours of gameplay, I gave up. Every time I progressed a little further, but ultimately died and had to restart. In a way, this parallels to the very explicit bullying theme Aka Manto | 赤マント presents. Two classmates have bullied you into exploring an abandoned school, and if you pay attention to the lore and collect the cassettes, you will hear students of that haunted school you are exploring were bullied too. As a game, Aka Manto | 赤マント is a bully. It is not fun to play, but you want to succeed despite its unfair and difficult survival horror, puzzle mechanics, and item collection. But, if you do not succeed, just like when facing bullies (or a "bully") in real life, you will be further beat down to the ground. You will have obtained access to a new area after skillfully beating the first level only to die and have to restart. In Aka Manto | 赤マント, just like in a problem with facing bullies (or a "bully") in real life, you wake up to fight another day against an unfair, uncaring, and difficult opponent.

Really well made game; I unfortunately couldn't stand the scares and had no intention of putting myself through the torture as it literally made my neighbors call the police; I screamed so loud.

Aka Manto is a frustrating game. A good game, but VERY frustrating at times. Aka Manto does so many things right, only to let its difficulty and main monster make the experience feel cheap. The item collecting aspect of Aka Manto is fantastic. Solving the different puzzles around the school is challenging and fun. Aka Manto does a great job creating a tense atmosphere with its sound design and creepy PS1 style graphics. Where Aka Manto goes wrong is with Aka Manto himsself. This dude seems to know exactly where you are at all times. It just becomes a game of running away from Aka Manto and completely losing where you are. The layout of the school is a bit confusing and it doesn't help when you're being jumpscared and screamed at. The portals and the baby face make the experience way harder than it needed to be. I feel like there should also be a little more audio warning for Aka Manto. Sounds of footsteps, nonsensical voice lines, or anything sound related would help so much. Aka Manto's AI ranges from being a complete idiot to knowing where you are at all times and chasing you exactly AWAY from where you need to be. Related to the audio cues thing I mentioned earlier, since there's no audio cues for Aka Manto, sometimes I'd be a few steps in the dark away from him and not know at all. It was super frustrating at times, especially in tight hallways. You might see all my rambling and ask "Why did he give this a 'Yes" then if he dislikes it this much?" and the answer is that I don't dislike this game. I just know it could be a lot less frustrating. Having no saves is this games downfall IMO. Hourlong runs dying at the finish line is really upsetting. Lets just be honest here, this is a Nun Massacre clone. A slightly easier Nun Massacre clone, but the formula is good enough to where I don't care. If you like hard, old school horror, this is for you. Be prepared to lose long runs though, as this game is unforgiving. 7/10

If you're looking for a horrifying, completely unsafe atmosphere filled with jumpscares and probably the most bumpin' chase music I've ever heard. This is your game. Be warned though, this game is extremely difficult. You gonna die and since there are no saves you have to start all the way over. You'll need a map and a guide and might need to pause to orient yourself sometimes. Your first instinct will always be to want to wait until the area is completely safe before venturing out, but sometimes that's not possible. It can't open doors, but it teleports making no area truly "safe". Many of the vents open into completely open spaces, do you're going to be running a lot. It follows you if you're in an area too long and sometimes you're just going to get chased. It's unavoidable. Aka Manto's AI is kinda scrungly. Many guides will tell you to drop the lighter or do the pool stuff early, but it's better to just bait Aka Manto to a location and then run into the vent to complete a different area. If you're going for the papers, it's A LOT of back and forth, and I strongly recommend you save getting the purple paper for last and focus on completing the entirety of the 3rd floor and roof first. Good luck. lmao
It's Good: If You Can Handle The Chaos
This game is really good, but I just can't handle it. It's way too stressful and difficult for me to torture myself to get through. I respect the decision to have perma death, but it's too tough for me. I got to 6/7 body parts on my first playthrough and then got messed up after she somehow got into the same room as me when I was going to get the Acid Bucket. So I was forced to start all over again. It's also incredibly difficult to memorize the place, everything looks so similar and dark. All while being chased by Aka Manto which now leaves you in a total different area with even more confusion about where you are. Not only is it hard to remember the layout, but where the puzzle items themselves are and where you might have left them. For me the experience is just frustration, left with no desire or motivation to endure upon death.
It's Not For Me, But Maybe For You
Now with all that said, that doesn't mean the game is bad. I just think these types of games just aren't for me, but perhaps it's for you. Give it a go, see if you like it. It's full of stuff to do and explore, if you can handle being chased around by Aka Manto that is. For now I'll stay away from this game, but maybe I'll return and give it another go. We'll see.

I wanted to like this game, and it does have some good qualities. I do like the PS1 era style graphics, as they give off the same creepy sense of unreality as the first Silent Hill. And the game does have quite a good atmosphere. But when it comes to the gameplay, there are two big problems. First of all, why are we only allowed to pick up three items at a time? The only possible reason I can think of is to artificially draw out the run time, as it's an annoying feature that serves no real purpose. The other is with Aka Manto. Now, the first time she appeared, I'll admit it was terrifying. But the problem is that she appears too often, and after you've been killed by her multiple times, she stops being scary and just starts being irritating. And when your horror game becomes more annoying then scary, that's a problem. There's solid ideas here, and I can see why some people like it, but as it is now I personally can't recommend it.

The whole retro graphics, scary abandoned school ambience is very good and the story and good ending is also pretty good, but the game suffers from Aka Manto being overpowered. Aka Manto knows where you are at all times, whenever you go to another floor or area in the school he immediately teleports near you. I even had times where he would camp the vent exit near the beginning of the game, which I can't stall him out, since if I do the centipede will attack me. He constantly tries to cut you off by teleporting where you are running which sucks because he teleports instantly, since there is no animation or warning of him teleporting through the two portals he can spawn on any room. The hallways don't help either since they are designed to have a very tight space between them that forces you to peak corners and risk getting hit. In my opinion the worst part is that he also does not make a single sound when he is walking around the map (he only makes sounds when he is already chasing you) and the warning on your screen when he is near you only appears when you're very close to him and sometimes the warning won't even appear on your screen. You can only have three items in your inventory even though one of those item slots is always going to be used by your lighter since the game is very dark, which basically forces you to backtrack allot, especially if you want to use a healing item since you don't auto heal. Once you collect a certain amount of items a second Aka Manto appears which is the exact same as the first one, but the second Aka Manto will either wait for you on another floor or just join the floor that you are on with the first one. All of these issues turn the game into a luck based game where either the game is completely against you or the game works in favor for both sides. It also doesn't help that to read the recordings you have to risk getting hit since if you stay in a room for more than ten seconds Aka Manto puts up a portal in that room and obviously teleports to it. I actually wanted to recommend this game because of how terrifying it is, but the more you play the game and try to beat it, the more it switches from being scary to being very frustrating.

Aka manto's spawn should be fixed. It would definitely be a better experience if the spawn system didn't get established to the same floor as the player is at, every time. Should have some variation so the player couldn't guess whether the creature is in the same floor as you or not, after some time it became rather annoying than scary for it's frequent appearing, making the exploration rather less appealing.. Other than that, the game is pretty engaging. Tense atmosphere, great art direction, and a interesting back story that highlights personal conflicts within Japan that happens quite frequently, which was a nice touch.
