To start I bought and played this as a complete beginner to any kind of real world hacking. I have to say this game has been a lot of fun to play through and learn. The game gives you plenty of documentation and resources to get through it without ...too much trouble but I would recommend that you're one of those people who can look something up and can figure things out from reading posts and forums. This will not be a fast paced hacking exp like other games of the type out there. But as you go through and learn the steps and figure out these CTF puzzles it is definitely rewarding. If anyone is even the least bit curious about hacking and you want to see what it can really be like. Give this game a shot.

The game itself is great in many ways. It has its warts, but it's a decent introduction to basic, real-life security techniques and problems. If you're experienced in info-sec the basic storyline is probably going to be fairly easy, but there are some hidden challenges that are somewhat more demanding. Tip: Remember to turn on 'advanced mode' to avoid spoilers. HOWEVER... The game bundles and is tightly integrated with QEMU, which is open-source software copylefted by GNU GPLv2. This requires that Yolo Space Hacker also is GPL'ed, but it's not. In other words, this is a blatant license violation and abusing open-source software. That means a thumb down from me.

Maybe this is more of an indication of insanity, but I'm actually enjoying this presentation of hacking concepts way more than that of Nite Team 4 and other hacking genre games. This game's interface is as janky as it looks on video, and I would rather use my own virtual machine to connect to a CTF like TryHackMe and HackTheBox Academy. But in terms of a safe standalone sandbox environment for beginners, I think this is actually a very promising framework. The competition for this kind of package in my mind is more like the Web Security Dojo virtual machine image (which also intended to be an offline sandbox environment). Web Security Dojo was aimed at practitioners or students who were able to set up their own virtualization environment (or were able to get help from an instructor), whereas this game provides a batteries-included experience for beginners who would not know how to set up a linux environment. I agree that it's ironic that a game that spawns a linux VM does not support linux as a gaming platform, but I appreciate the developer's focus of knowing what audience they want to target. To defend my ridiculous preference of this game's interface over Nite Team 4's, I would point out that NT4's interface while slick felt really off in terms of how windowing was handled. For some reason, NT4's windows seemed hard to manage, for reasons such as the windows not being responsive to dragging, inactive windows being made hard to see because of an annoying shadowing effect, and the way windows would proliferate and clutter the game space. Yes, Yolo's interface is ugly in comparison, but in windowed mode you can move and manage the windows for the tools and browsers in a more normal fashion. Both Yolo and NT4's windows do have a tendency to proliferate without a taskbar to track what is open, but at least Yolo supports window tabs, which I'm surprised makes a huge difference for browser and terminal management. I really liked how real tools are used in the challenges. I suspect one reason why I could never get deep into Hacknet or Uplink was that the tooling in those games seemed like a waste of time to learn, but I was learning useful linux tips and tricks from Yolo's Hacker's Guide. Nite Team 4's portrayal of hacking tooling was very well researched, but eventually the limitations and lack of flexibility of NT4's verbs became apparent, particularly with how tool outputs needed to be scripted by the devs. It was a bit of a tell when a NT4 tool would output nothing, as the dev didn't script the mission to use that tool. In contrast, you are interacting with "real" virtualized servers that react realistically to real tools in Yolo, so using the "wrong" approach results in realistic feedback from the servers even if your method of exploration was not anticipated by the devs. At the point of the game when this first part review was written, the game's Myst-like 3D environment traversal and theming (space/red-team themed) haven't yet added more flavor than that of a text/video prompted CTF like Advent of Cyber (Christmas themed), but I can see the potential for a more game-like exploration mode. I'm curious to know if later modules can take advantage of this game engine setup, as I can see the potential for combining Myst-like exploration with CTF challenges. All that said, this is definitely a conditional recommendation as the nature of this game's handling of virtual machines and real tooling can be a really rough experience for those looking for a polished gaming experience. But I am enjoying the game with all its warts, and I am looking forward to the next DLC to be released in 2022. (Review above posted at the 3 hour mark, since the devs asked for feedback after a chapter-review-style challenge, which I'm happy to oblige.) Afterwards, I ended up getting 90% of the flags completed in the Mission Bikini Module. While nothing too impressive happened on the Myst-like exploration end, I considered the rest of the challenges to be nice practice at exploiting reverse shells and exploring compromised systems. This is a pretty solid beginner CTF experience! (Notes on Forensic mission DLC below) You can first-person-view walk around the environment in the Forensic DLC! The controls are a bit rough as you need to hold down the mouse button over the 3D view window to look around, but this is a huge improvement over clicking glowing arrows on fixed-perspective screens. There are even challenges about moving through the environment in glitchy ways. I was less familiar with how to investigate unknown files in a linux context, so this module was a good introduction to that topic. I even learned a new tip for tracing related packets in WireShark that I will be able to use at work. It's surprising that the devs have not yet highlighted the DLC mission in a video, because this is a big gameplay update from the first mission.

As someone who is a massive fan of the hacking simulator genre and someone who went to school for and currently works in the cybersecurity field, I have to say I love this game. It is essentially a CTF that teaches you authentic techniques and tools along the way. The UI is a bit clunky, but it's not that important given how fun the experience is. It teaches you the tools and then encourages you to experiment, think outside the box, and apply what you've learned. It reminds me of TryHackMe. The only thing I really dislike is the clunky movement and camera controls in the forensic DLC. But other than that, I love it. If you have an interest in penetration testing or being on a red team, then this is the game for you. I can't recommend it enough.

This is *exactly* what I was hoping it would be; a gamified set of hacking puzzles/step-by-step lessons (if you're not already familiar with the techniques) in 'real' hacking with the actual tools you might use to do this stuff. If any of this even sounds half-way interesting to you, don't even think about it anymore- you should just go for it!

Great experience, I learned a lot of stuff. The main mission/tutorial was fun, but I think I liked even more looking for all the flags. There's a super helpful in-game guide, and also q discord in case you're stuck. Can't wait for other missions to be added !

Hacking games are usually just glorified cookie clickers, but this one is the real deal.
