  Absolutely love it - the retelling of the Romance of the Three Kingdoms story with Kunio characters is adorable and hilarious, controls are great, there's tons of moves, and it's a pretty sizable game. Runs great on steam deck!

  PSA: Controller problems? enable steam controller global override and they go away. there's really something weird about long-time Japanese developers slowly forgetting how to make their own flagship title as programmers retire and new blood get less done with every iteration. Aesthetically, and as a spiritual successor to the Downtown Nekketsu games that involved period piece parody, this Three Kingdoms game is cute and on-point. The retro look is amped up by simple 3D landscapes and the characters have more exaggerated spritework for all the cool new moves they have. Mechanically, though, it's kind of a flop. I'm an hour and some in and the combos are stiff, the spacing in dodges and with certain follow-up attacks is scuffed, and negative edge (hold button to charge) moves are fickle as hell. Sometimes attacks let you scoop floored enemies, sometimes they don't. There's a roman cancel mechanic straight out of guilty gear where you use 50 super meter to slow down time and pushback enemies to reset yourself out of guarding. i don't think arcsys had anything to do with this game on a development angle but it's funny. Day 1, and the peak number of players is 45 around the world. i think everyone knew they were gonna get a half-baked experience just from looking at this, but I still went in because I love the series and wanted something to take it easy with. if you love the MECHANICS of old kunio games: attacking barrels, enemy stacks, combo juggling, etc, don't bother much with this. It's designed inherently more like an action RPG than it is a true beat-em-up. While it has better aesthetics than games like River City Ransom Underground and more visual loyalty than River City Girls, it's become obvious that westerners imitating Kunio games know how to make Kunio games better than the Downtown Nekketsu team do. Kinda like Sonic Mania versus Sonic Team. You want the loyal, full experience? Go to the programmers who grew up loving the games and wanted to fix their favorite series. The original developers either quit decades ago or never kept up. I still recommend it positively because a 6/10 game technically passes anything but a bar exam.

  I've loved river city ransom and games like it since I was a kid. I've also loved dynasty warriors. It strikes a nice balance between the two and I really enjoy it. If you know nothing about what to expect, its a side scroller beat-em up heavily focused on character customization where you can spend money to buy food power ups and level up to specialize in various fighting styles.(punch, kick, throwing, and weapons). You also get scrolls to give yourself tons of special moves for every circumstance as well as get tactics and learn ultimate moves through killing enemies with the special moves. It starts as a fairly standard beat em up but you start seeing some crazy super saiyan like stuff eventually which is always awesome to see in this style of game. That combined with the fact that it has online co op is a nice recipe for success.

  Pretty big disappointment. A lot of yapping, very little punching. Seriously, 1 playable character in story mode...? At least in 1989 you could get a guy with a different colored shirt. Pretty much just a re-skin of RC Rival Showdown...which was also not a great game. They're doing sequels and reboots the wrong way around; to be successful at that, you change the appearance, not the formula. They've been keeping the aesthetic, but sucking everything out of it that made the original great. Arc, let the fans handle the remakes like you (begrudgingly) did with Underground...you're no good at this anymore. Alternatively, check out RC Girls, which actually feels like a proper RC/Old skool brawler.

  Gamepads dont work on this game Conroller no go, not even in big pic mode, not by turning on or off the various gamepad suport in options. bummer. refumd pending, head scratcher because this is a switch game, they had to code controller into game but steam version nope.

  worst thing ever if you have a keyboard and mouse . no explanation of the controls or what buttons to push . incredibly annoying . not recommended even for river city ransom fans.

  Great, fun and addictive. This one starts out kinda slow and the overall gameplay is grindy. However, once you start unlocking the special moves the fun really intensifies. NB: This game is more like the classic NES RCR games and not like River City Girls, so the combat is a little more simplistic but the level designs on this one are amazing, and more complex than the ones on RCG. It's a beautiful game that uses 3d assets and 2d sprites, and the world is very big. Modern combat mechanics would have been really good for this one but the old school NES combat is just fine. I'll give it a 7.5/10

It seems like they fixed the controller too because I didn't change anything from what i tried before and it works now so glad they're working on the game. I love the special moves so far as well the tactic cut scenes are siiiiiiiiiiick. Some cut scenes will have the wrong name for who is talking at times, but that's no big deal it's fun and pretty challenging.
