Lone Fungus community

I'm just one person working on this game and you can get in touch with me in the Lone Fungus Discord : http://discord.gg/dgapCNF

I'll do my best to answer any questions about the game, listen to your feedback and show what I'm working on next for the game!

About the Game

Lone Fungus is a true Metroidvania set in a world built by mushrooms where you play as the last mushroom alive. Explore an ancient world, acquire new abilities and discover secrets!

Exploration

There exist ten distinct areas for you to explore, each with its own unique set of enemies and obstacles. If you are willing to scour every nook and cranny in each area, you'll uncover plenty of secrets and receive well-deserved rewards. Through your exploration, you will earn significant upgrades in the form of Relics, Emblems, and upgrades to your Health or Mindpoints. These upgrades will undoubtedly be valuable to any player. To learn more about these upgrades, check out the combat section!

Features

- Explore a huge interconnected world gated with true Metroidvania progression.

- Fast and responsive combat, play as an acrobatic mushroom!

- A spell system based on how you strike spells with your sword, giving spells multiple uses and a creative approach to combat.

- Unique and challenging platforming gameplay reminiscent of modern platformers such as Celeste but set in a fully open world. *optional*

- Play the game how you want! Pick between four difficulty modes or use the accessible Assist Mode!

Combat

The Combat in Lone Fungus is simplistic but has depth in terms of customization. You can for instance parry anything that would normally would damage you, but parrying incoming projectiles in particular will shoot them back at foes. You are however never forced to parry and you can even change how the parry system works by equipping Emblems!

Emblems are items you will find all over the world. Equipping an Emblem might change how the parried projectile behaves, for instance, you can make it home into enemies but deal less damage. Or instead of bouncing a projectile off your cap you will do damage to anything near you. There is even a Vortex Emblem which destroys multiple projectiles around the player.

Upgrades and Build customizations

In addition to Emblems, there are Relics that work very similarly to the Charm system in Hollow Knight. Some change how your healing works and others increase your sword damage or give you additional protection. There are 60 Relics in the game and you choose what your strengths will be through the Relics. You can make some really specialized builds focusing on defense, healing, speed, melee attacking, or spell-casting!

And then there are permanent upgrades that you gain from fighting bosses, these are all from spells to new moves and types of attacks!

Bosses

In Lone Fungus, you can challenge and defeat 28 bosses to acquire new abilities. My goal is to design engaging and equitable boss battles that can be won without sustaining any damage from the boss. To achieve this, I craft distinct attack patterns for each boss and provide clear cues before their strikes. Additionally, I limit the randomness of their attacks. My aim is to provide an enjoyable and stimulating experience where players can triumph over bosses by mastering their techniques.

Platforming

Lone Fungus is essentially a precision platformer, but it doesn't compel you to undertake overly difficult platforming tasks in order to advance in the game. Instead, all the platforming challenges are confined to optional side rooms, allowing you to relish the game as a Metroidvania-style adventure game focused on combat and exploration, while still benefiting from the precise controls of a precision platformer. However, if you're inclined to master the game's hardcore mechanics, there are practice rooms available for you to refine your skills and take on the most daunting platforming challenges that the game has to offer.

Play the game how you want!

The game features 4 difficulty modes, several ways to customize controls (like a dedicated down-attack button), and a full-featured Assist-Mode!

The Assist-Mode allows you to turn on 6 different features which will drastically make the game more accessible.

Platforming Pause - Increases the pauses between platforming mechanics like Mushmovers, giving you a larger room to react and breathe in between platforming sections.

Magic Platforms - Adds special platforms to some sections in the game to make them much easier.

Worldmap Hints - Will show items you have missed in rooms you have already visited.

Stronger Sword - Increases your sword's base damage, allowing you to beat bosses easier.

Infinite MP - Play without having to manage your Mindpoints, heal and cast spells as much as you want!

Invincibility - You cannot die!

Keep in mind that the Assist-Mode is not only for players that might think the game is too tough but it can also be used to just mess around and have fun with the game in your own way!

His game is nothing short of amazing. It's a true metroidvania, with a massive open world and really interesting abilities that work in weird ways. Not to mention classic ability gates. You will get lost, and you will love it. Controls are tight and have a heavy emphasis on platforming, With some really cool game tweaks you can use if you want less of a challenge and want to explore without achieving the high skill ceiling that is possible in this game. I really want to see what speedrunners can do when it comes to the platforming mechanics. Long story short, I really recommend this game.

I bought this game to cope with a lack of Silksong, but now I'm invested in it. The game itself is surprisingly large and diverse for an early access, and is getting updates on the regular. I've continually surprised myself by how vast the areas of the game are, and how many secret passages I walked past. The parkour in this game has challenged me well, and there are a plethora of means to kill your enemies. Many areas can be accessed early by design by utilizing the game's flexible mechanics. Keeping in mind this game is an early access title as of writing. Of course, the game features bugs, none that I've encountered that are game-breaking but enough to warrant attention. If you do bring a bug to Basti's attention then you can expect very promptly to find it fixed. The lone developer of Lone Fungus is extremely dedicated to crafting the perfect metroidvania and is actively listening to the community's responses, complaints, and suggestions. He has a very clear direction for the future of development, and I'm happy to ride along while it grows. I can't wait to see what an amazing world this will blossom into. Please support Basti.

I have really enjoyed the game so far, and I am definitely looking forward to the full release of this game, but meanwhile, here are some things I would change: - Adding sound effects for the great slash would make it feel a lot nicer and responsive - Healing should still be possible in silenced parkour zones because why not. - There are 2 parkour zones in the sewers with spinning spike balls which don’t have damage disabled, though they will never deplete your HP to zero for some reason, also I cannot seem to get past those parkour areas, and they seem way too tricky for their own good. - It would be pretty nice if the map updated at least a little when exploring a new room, and the red line that shows that the room continues is not explained to the player, and the color red just doesn’t make a lot of sense in my opinion. - I think that it would be nice if just walking near a save statue would heal you and refill your MP, but it would just be a little commodity. Starting a game with more than the normal 5 hp (such as playing on easy mode) doesn’t start the game with your character at full health and has been this way for a long time and still is, last time I checked. - I don’t understand why the health upgrade fragments are placed how they are. I got the fragments at a rate too slow to feel excited whenever I found one, and perhaps the fragments could be completed in 3 parts instead of 4? I think that 3-piece containers would work fine and show the player that they are receiving new upgrades, and completing 4 parts to upgrade max health feels a little cliché since so many series do this, such as Zelda, Hollow Knight, and much, much more. - The map pins should be reworked more like Hollow Knight. Changing the colors of already placed down pins feels off and all the pin variations are recolors of the same type, which makes it hard to remember why I set a certain color of pin somewhere. (Example: I set a certain color of pin here to signify that I cannot explore farther because I am missing a crucial ability, but this is easy to mix up because every pin is composed of two wildly conflicting colors.) Some more identification to the different pins like details (like how Hollow Knight gives every type of pin its own engraving) and a map legend/key would be very nice and make me use pins a lot more. - I don’t understand why you have to crouch, parry, and then immediately attack to redirect ranged attacks straight ahead. If possible, It would be super nice if just parrying while crouched redirected attacks straight ahead instead. - I find the hard falling animation for the mushroom a little strange. The mushroom tilts about 45 degrees and then looks directly at the screen when he hits the ground, staring straight into my soul as his body un-compresses, I’m sure he could be animated to look bouncier and that would probably look better. - Do the germs in the infected biome have a cap on how much they can multiply? Regardless,I think they should have a cap of about 5-8 as the screen can quickly become overcome with too many germs, dooming you to get hit at least a few times, even if you try to play it safe. - I think the Death system is a great system, but is also never explained to the player, so perhaps something could be done about this? - It is a little too easy to drown, like seriously. - The walking mutant turtles in the sewers gives me the creeps, can they please look more normal or something? - The music for this game is pretty solid, but the music in the starting area sounds far too deep/somber/old in my opinion and this makes it sound alien and off-putting at first. Boss Criticism: A few of these bosses had made me unhappily try again multiple times, but I'm not sure if this is because the boss design wasn’t the best, or because I just didn’t adapt to their patterns properly, anyways I really didn’t like a few of the bosses, one of those being the Ice Spirit. The whole battlefield for the Ice Spirit felt a little weird, like there was a lot of space but not enough space for the player, and I was confused on how to approach the boss, so I ended up just sitting back and waiting for the boss to come to me, which isn’t an ideal solution to fighting a boss. Also, a few of the boss fights felt like spikes were in an unnecessary place, not to make the player adapt, but to actually just be inconvenient. And lastly, the Electric spirit boss looked more fiery than anything, so I think adding a purely cosmetic electric trail behind the boss could really sell the whole “electric” thing. (Also the minions that travel on the lines that the boss spawns should look a little more toned down so they don’t just look like normal minions without faces) A couple of things that I like about the game: - The downwards slash button is truly a great option for controlling, platforming would be a pain without it. I wish Hollow Knight had this or something. - The Color Cavens Music and most of the Game’s music. - The three lives the death system gives you. - The game feels very fluid to control. - The main menu is satisfying to use - A statue that told me that I could pretend that this was the ending because I had gotten all of the abilities at that point - Though I haven't used the assist mode, I think it's great that the option is there for everyone - All of the bosses are solid, in my opinion. - The equippable that lets you regain a hit point when knocked to 1 health (Although I think it’s counterpart costs way too much too use) - Barry I am excited to see the game’s full release, I hope my review is useful, and I hope development is going as smoothly as planned.

Truly did not think I would enjoy this game THIS much. Well, I do! It’s incredible. And the developer is always so helpful over on the official Discord. Always trying to implement requests from the community and constantly updating and fixing bugs (if there are any to fix). If you love metroidvania games, I’m telling you, this is one to not miss out on. I debated for quite some time to purchase this (especially in Early Access), but I’m so glad I did!

A Fungy boy doing funky things . if Celeste and Hollow Knight had a child together it would be Lone Fungus. its mostly toward celeste gameplay that has many parkour thing but unlike Celeste there is boss fights and various enemies through out the world. the most noticible thing in this game it be the power ups and various abilities and its rare you will see this much of abilities in other games . it can be simple like double jump or dashing to the summoning a cube thing(?) to help you dash one more time in the air or using a skill to use spikes not only as a pogoing but also as a speed boost boost like a basketball ball. its just a lot of abilities that can make you confusing at the first but you will learn it at the end if you be patient. the story and lore is unfinished for now.but as for now its a cliche like many others game that you are a chosen one and you are the last species of your kind and you must save yourself from extinction. the only thing i found very intrestings are npcs that are very SUPPROTIVE toward you .almost all of them believe in you and its like pray you as a god or creator and its a rare sight in games that almost all npcs acknowledge you as a savior or an important person from the beginning in a game. the musics is ok. nit very special some areas are enjoyable but some other you even can silent your device through out the area its just either meh or ok. the arts and areas are cool and each are of the game its big and so different from each other and each one has there own type of enemies and challange . IN CONCLUSION if you like celeste(not HK) you will enjoy this game too. Ecpecially if you like platforming . BUT i must say it dosnt have any great story FOR NOW. 8/10 if you like 2d platfromer buy it. otherwise its not for you and im not recommend it for other types of people AND ALSO ITS CURRENTLY UNFINISHED WITHOUT A PROPER ENDING,

Loving it! It's a near perfect mix of Celeste and Hollow Knight in my book. Don't get me wrong though, this game has so much different from both. Platforming is insanely complex sometimes (mostly in late-game areas, and optional ones too), bosses can be a bit of a challenge. Don't forget about spells too! They can deal insane damage when needed. There's tons of nonlinear aspects, though keep in mind that one area might be entirely inaccessible until coming back later with new abilities. There's also immense variety in the relics available, so you can do what you want! Also don't forget to pin things; pins can be extremely helpful for backtracking (if you want some solid completion). My only critique, and it's a small one at that; is that most bosses names are rather dull. Just "Big ___" for example. Edit: Some sort of guiding help would be nice (even if very small), I spent a very long time looking for a single very necessary upgrade I was missing. Edit 2: True 100% is absolutely AWFUL. There are so many extremely hidden rooms/astral doors that it seems practically impossible to find absolutely everything without at least a glance at a guide. Don't even get me started on the solitary mindshroom in the underground/the one atop the tall funnel in the tunnels; they're incredibly hard to get. Overall/TLDR (opinion, not fact): Combat: 9.5/10 Platforming: 9/10 Challenge: 6/10 (provided you utilize spells well) Story: 6/10 (alright, just a bit too scattered about to be understood easily) Completion: 2.5/10 (I do not at all recommend getting true 100%.) Do pick it up if you love Celeste and/or Hollow Knight!
