https://store.steampowered.com/curator/34777177-The-dull-games-reviewer/ Pop quiz: You're on the outside of a boat during a storm. The sea is raging and the ship is violently rocking. The corpse of a russian man being controlled by a parasite in its brain is approaching you with menacing intent. Do you: A) Waste ammo trying to cap it in the head with an unsteady aim? B) Hope to time it correctly so that a rather large body of water swells up over the side and knocks it overboard? C) Lure it forward, and let a rather heavy object swinging from the ceiling decapitate it? It's a multiple choice question with no correct answer, but C is clearly more efficient and fun! Another question: You're in an engine room, whirring machinery whirs away on the level below. A shotgun is nearby. But so are several red valves that indicate gas pipes. A corpse being animated by a parasite has just burst out of a floor grating, and several others are approaching with menacing intent. Do you: A) Be completely obvious and use the shotgun to blow their heads off? B) Shoot off the valves, ignite the gas and burn them to a crisp? (but gain no extra ammo / supplies from the body because you torched it) C) Shoot them in the leg so they fall into the heavy machinery, get smushed to a pulp and watch as a huge geyser of blood spurts out? All of course are valid answers, but having already played this game before (way back when, in 2005 or so) it came as a total surprise to me on a recent playthrough that option C was even possible. If you're not careful you can even fall off and get smushed yourself.... First time around I must have just boringly shot them - which isn't boring per se (the shooting is punchy, satisfying and graphic) it's just cool that this game has nifty little touches like that dotted around. In other ways this is the 'Dead Space' of its time (3 years prior to that games release) - as you may have gathered there's some kind of creature that reanimates the dead, so headshots are necessary to put down the host. But if there's another inanimate corpse about with its noggin intact, then the creature will pop out of the old body and control the new one. So whenever I go into a room the first thing I do is splatter all the brains of any bodies, so as not to give them any extra hosts if they appear. When out of a body the parasite creatures will start lashing at you with extended limbs, or hoist themselves up onto the ceiling and scuttle about, so they still remain tricky foes. For a game that doesn't have the calibre or reputation of the likes of Resident Evil 4 and Dead Space its surprising how much this innovated back in the day. The wow factor will of course have worn off for modern gamers, but its still fun to play even without the nostalgia. You do have to have a tolerance for fixed camera angles when moving around, although its fully moveable when aiming and shooting. AND YOU CAN EVEN STRAFE AND MOVE WHEN SHOOTING!!!! Good golly miss molly! You couldn't do that in Resi 4..... So - if its enjoyable, and interesting, then why is this game dirt cheap and somewhat forgotten? Well...its a touch clunky with the camera, its only scary if you're a compete wuss, the storytelling is mediocre (the atmosphere of the boat in a storm is ace, the horror aspect is.....not) and the voice acting is iffy. It works with a controller (which is pretty amazing for a 2005 game - seeing as how the xbox 360 didn't exist back then!) but is slightly fiddly to set up. The game runs on windows 10, but once played and exited you have to delete a file every time to start it back up again. And the save system is weird - it goes on specific points in the game, so if you explore in the wrong direction and then die - tough! It won't have saved even if you've been playing for half an hour, but do the current objective and it will save....The checkpoints aren't too badly spaced, though you do have to follow them in a certain order, which is kind of odd. At such a low price I'd still recommend this game if you like gory shooters, or if you like to see the genesis of ideas that other more modern games have taken onboard (heh! I say more modern - its funny to think that Dead Space is now a decade old....) COLD FEAR - You might want to read the manual.

GRAPHICS For a 2005 PC game, are great and hold up well, helped by the widescreen patch, which makes them look better. They are just enough for what is needed for this type of video game. The color palette fits the setting and atmosphere very well, and I think its application in the game is very successful. CONTROLS The control scheme is complex, but brilliant. You either love it or hate it. You can actively choose whether to play the game with dynamic fixed cameras in a 3D environment (like Resident Evil Code Veronica), or if you prefer to observe the environment and adopt the "over-the-shoulder camera" gameplay like in Resident Evil 4. The way you can flow from one mode to another is what makes it interesting; it's not a choice before starting the game, it's not an option to activate in a menu. By pressing the right mouse button, you activate the OTS aiming mode, while by default with SHIFT, Hansen will raise his weapon aiming as in a classic Resident Evil, although this last mode can limit the control you have over the aiming, since aiming with SHIFT uses a "lock on target" system that locks on the nearest target. Additionally, it's worth mentioning that when aiming with SHIFT, Hansen will stop walking freely and will always look in the direction in which we are aiming with the mouse. The combination of these factors will make many players end up always aiming with the right click, sacrificing completely the SHIFT aiming. ENVIRONMENT AND SETTINGS The setting must be the game's strong point. The whaler represents a perfect mix of labyrinthine corridors, claustrophobic rooms, and unsettling corners behind which an enemy may be hiding. The rain, the rocking of the boat, the dangerous hanging hooks and crates... Everything adds up to a puzzle that is a work of art for this genre of video games and a strong point in favour of this title. VARIETY OF ENEMIES AND ENVIRONMENTAL DANGERS The lack of variety in enemies is one of the biggest shortcomings of the game, especially considering the large number of enemies that appear in the game's concept art. Throughout the game, we only encounter six types of enemies, and some of them have limited appearances (although very well-executed). On the other hand, the lack of enemies is balanced with the appearance of environmental dangers, such as hooks and crates hanging that, upon impact will take away a significant amount of health. We will also need to watch out for the waves that hit the ship, as a well-loaded wave can violently push Hansen against the walls, seriously injuring him. We also need to watch our steps on the whaler, which, rocked by the waves, can make us slide and crash hard against walls, or in worse cases, send us overboard. To avoid becoming victims to the waves and gravity, Hansen must grab onto anything he can with the appropriate button, which will hold him in place and prevent him from sliding. In addition to "natural" dangers, we will need to watch our step because we will encounter traps and tricky situations, such as a room full of explosives and the ease of detonating them while defending ourselves. I won't go into detail to respect the reader's gaming experience. STORY The story is rather generic, with notable flaws and plot holes that are hard to ignore if we pay even minimal attention. In the first 10 minutes of gameplay, we see a paramilitary team boarding an apparently abandoned whaling ship to investigate something, and they are suddenly surprised and defeated by unknown creatures. Then our hero comes into action with his own team to investigate what happened. His team is also eliminated, leaving him alone to investigate the area, putting us now in his shoes aboard the whaling ship. As we progress in the first 10 minutes of gameplay, we discover that it is not a whaling ship, but a cover for a Russian scientific-military operation. Speaking without spoilers: One of the most notable flaws in the game's story is that some details that are important and key during the first half of the game have not been explored, explained, or sustained towards the end of the game. A certain character, suddenly disappears without really closing their role in the game, leaving a gap in the final segment that leaves a strange taste in mouth. Also another matter of vital importance is completely ignored towards the end. As I write this and think, I have realized that one of the possible causes of these incoherencies in the narration may be a sudden change in the script towards the end of the game. CHARACTERS Unfortunately, the characters are generally flat and one-dimensional. But what is most notable is that the villains introduced in the game, as quickly as they appear, are just as quickly forgotten, with forgettable performances. They lack real depth or presence in the game, and their appearances are almost exclusively limited to written documents or death scenes that coincide with their first appearance in flesh and bone. Hansen, has a hint of depth that is exposed to the player in a conversation, but it is soon forgotten and completely abandoned by the game's narrative, limiting this depth to two sentences that, if not read in the manual, leave the player bewildered as to what they could possibly mean. GENERAL GAMEPLAY: The ship setting seems very fitting for this type of game, with a strong sense of isolation and desperation, coupled with the swaying of the ship, which makes it difficult to aim at enemies' heads. The game never provides a map to consult, so players must find their way by paying attention to character conversations or reading the documents they come across. This is by design, as to locate ourselves on the ship, we must read signs that are only translated by Hansen when we aim directly at one. I believe this choice was well made, forcing the player to locate resources and objectives more realistically and not allowing us to rely on a magical map that constantly indicates our location, something I have been guilty of relying on in many games before, and thus initially surprised me. As mentioned above, the controls allow us to choose between two modes of play at any time, allowing us to play the game as we please. This has been a very interesting and entertaining experience for me, sometimes forcing myself to avoid the use of one camera or another. Exploring environments in one mode and then in the other, and seeing the constant changes in perspective, may be disconcerting for some players, but it has been very fun for me. READ THE DAMN MANUAL (Included in steam): From describing actions, to giving backstory to enumerating dangers, the player will benefit greatly from reading the manual. Among other things, it contains a map that the game never shows at any time or place. REPLAYABILITY: There are no unlockables beyond the concept arts in the main menu and the higher dificulty. I have not found an extra weapon, an alternative look or whatever. This is quite sad in a Survival Horror game where replayability is often a must. CONCLUSION: Cold Fear is a survival horror title from the early 2000s that has aged decently graphically. The story is what we can expect from a title from that era, with typical genre cliches and a few difficult-to-ignore plot holes, but these do not detract from the gameplay experience. The limited variety of enemies, while not excusable, is balanced by the environmental hazards that we must navigate. The Spanish translation is mediocre, and the dubbing is the same. The setting and gameplay experience, tied to the controls and atmosphere obtained from the environment in which the events unfold, are, in my opinion, the strong point of this title, allowing us to forgive all the flaws in favor of a fun adventure where scares and nerves abound. The final boss, on the highest difficulty level, is an absolute son of a ****.

I've been resisting the temptation to buy Cold Fear for a long time but always sort of been interested in it. Now, I can honestly say that I was wrong to put off buying it so much. Taking inspiration from late 1990s Body Horrors like Deep Rising and Virus (the former in my opinion being grossly underrated), the story is typical Survival Horror fare. You play Tom Hanson, a coastguard officer responding to a distress call from a Russian military frigate that has found itself amid a storm at sea. Upon investigation, Hanson discovers that the frigate has been locked down in order to contain the spread of parasite-infused super-soldiers. Armed with only a small array of salvaged weapons and his own wits, Hanson must somehow rescue whatever survivors remain, gather whatever evidence there is and escape before he goes down with the doomed vessel. Put simply, the game is a tremendous fusion of traditional fixed-camera Survival Horror and over-the-shoulder third-person shooter. Sort of like what MGS2 would have been like if instead of genome soldiers, Snake had to contend with mutated Russian soldiers. One of the games' primary highlights is the fact that the ship's deterioration under the onslaught of the ocean turns the actual environment itself into a foe. When out on deck, players need to monitor the rocking of the vessel so that Hanson isn't thrown into the merciless sub-arctic waters. At other times, players must dodge waves washing onto the deck so as not to be swept up and slammed into the nearest wall. ...and this doesn't even begin to mention the numerous other environmental hazards dogging Hanson as he ducks and weaves through the bullets of terrified surviving soldiers, and and struggles against lightning-fast mutants trying to eat his face. The trouble with Cold Fear as a game is that it was released at much the same time as Resident Evil 4 and, sadly, it would seem that Capcom did a better job of mixing the Action with the Horror. While the game play is never anything less than gripping, there are some camera issues when switching between omniscient and over-shoulder. This dynamic works on the premise of how much pressure the player applies to the right trigger, which can prove annoying in times of high tension when all you want to do it pot-shoot the target. Similarly, the overall aesthetics of the game are a mixed bag. The XBox/PS2 generation graphic are fine, if a little dated (the monster designs can hang with some of the best of them), but the voice acting isn't fantastic. The NPC characters are all passably voiced but Hanson sounds as though he's an automaton on speed, devoid of the necessary vocal pacing or emotional gravitas to make him fully relatable. Long story short, Cold Fear is a 3.5 star game which could have been a 4.5 star one. Not terrible in the slightest, and a great addition for those seeking a new Action-Horror experience, but don't commiserate too much if you miss the chance to play it.

This game is like that obscure Nic Cage movie that is panned by all the uptight movie critics, but you love it because it's short and full of him going balls out insane.
