At first glance, Cliff Empire plays like most city builders - you have a set budget and a list of resources to work with, and you have to use them to build infrastructure, settle residents, and keep them happy. Of course, the last part is the hardest and most important to fulfill. However, it is different in one major way - you are NOT building a city. You are building an empire. One city alone can probably survive, but not thrive. If you want to unlock each cliff's full potential, you'll have to build on multiple cliffs at once. The problem is that cities do not share materials or money. The game is set in a post-apocalyptic world and your city is on a cliff that sits kilometers above an uninhabitable surface. The only way you can move resources from one city to another is via trade or loans. Trading can be done in several ways, but none are as clear-cut as in regular city builders. Loans also work differently, because there's nobody on Earth to borrow from except your other cities. Cities can issue loans and collect interest from each other, but cannot create money out of thin air like loans in other city builders. At least, not all at once. Be warned: This is not a game for beginners to the city builder genre. It is very unforgiving of mistakes, and if you fall into debt, it is extremely difficult to get back out. Most cities on less favorable cliffs will have to survive early stages by taking out loans, and it can be very easy to end up with loan interest that exceeds your city's income. If that happens, the game can become effectively softlocked. Its name is an apt description of how it feels to play: Your Empire balances on the edge of a cliff, and even a small mistake can send you flying off, never to return. Despite how unforgiving it is, making progress is very satisfying once you do manage to get a firm footing. This is mainly due to the amount of content that unlocks after completing a certain number of assignments. New features become available that can radically change the way you think about how to build your empire, without forcing you to replace what you already have. The game's visuals are absolutely gorgeous. Those screenshots on the store page are not just cherry-picked renders of impractical custom cities. Most of them are actually a pretty good indication of what a carefully planned midgame city looks like. Every building could have been taken out of a modern architect's dreams, and the stark monochrome color scheme accentuates the shapes and shadows they create even more. It's a joy to look at, but it's also a joy to listen to. The OST by Vadim Krakhmal is one of only a few recent game soundtracks that I'll listen to when not playing the game. I do have a couple of gripes with the game as it is, apart from the punishing difficulty. The tutorial could stand to go into a little more detail, as it only gives you the bare minimum amount of information to have your city function, and encourages you to branch out very early, when it would probably be wiser to focus on what you already have. I also wish the game had more speed settings. The default speeds are 1x, 3x, and 6x – 1x feels like slow motion, 3x feels just a touch too fast to be “normal,” but too slow to be “fast,” and 6x, although very fast, still feels too slow if you’re waiting for income to build up or for research to be completed. Overall, the game is harsh for newcomers, but if you have the patience to figure out its quirks, you’ll be rewarded with a unique and compelling experience and a futuristic metropolis to call your own.

Not a bad game for the price, but the research is so tediously slow it kinda ruins it for me. Lots of time sitting with the game on fast forward waiting for research or money.

I love the game BUT there is one BAD BAD BAD thing that I want to call the attention to for devs. DEVS: Don't get me wrong I just love this game and addicting as heck. Devs, the first game I got dealt had edges on the cliff that where not bridge buildable. all of the edges were round all the way around. before starting a new game I tried just demolishing everything on the edge to see if I could put the bridge down to connect to the other ones. NO SPOT! If I had no been tenatious enough to just start a new game and figure I had done something wrong and tried out a new game, I might have asked for a refund. I want to say I don't recommend just because of this issue to get your attention. But I won't for now. NEW PLAYERS: After several hours I finally figured out that when you are starting a game ... immediately pause it and see if you can build a bridge construction site to the other places before you do anything. Some sides might not be squared off enough to build a bridge to connect the cliffs. work those connections out first... THEN pause the constructions on all the cliffs and continue game as normal. You shouldn't have to do this but since there is no warnings or part of the tutorial... figured I Would warn you all and give you the work around. IF you don't have an edge to build a bridges somewhere to get all the cliffs connected, then just restart till you get a game that you can. IF you see a beam looking connection between cliffs then don't worry about that one because one of the nearby cliffs will work with it and it will eventually build more of a solid connection on its own.

Cool idea and aesthetic, but can't recommend it after getting through the surface level of things. After the initial bootstrapping of your city the game really just involves..... waiting. Even on max speed it takes on the order of hours to accrue research or money needed to expand. Your worker drones will hit their work capacity probably an hour if not two before you are able to improve the network in any way; that is if you know how to beeline the needed infrastructure and abuse the tutorial to ignore your city's needs. City Sims are largely passive games, but this game wants to be an idler you leave running in the background. Too bad it seems to pause if it isn't in focus.

TL;DR : This is without a doubt one of the best city builders I have played in a while, with awesome graphics, fantastic ideas and a great layered, long term game design to keep me interested in my map. It is an indie game so suffers the normal indie issues, but the devs seem very active in fixing bugs and even adding new content. All in all, IMO, if you like city builders then this is probably the best bang for your buck. It is cheap to buy and great to play. What more could I want? Full Review Cliff Empire is yet another one of these City Building games that seem to be all the rage over the last few years. Which is good for me as I love me a city builder, but it also means that the market is a little saturated so the game needs to have some special hooks to make it click with me and lucky for me, Cliff Empire delivers on nearly all levels. The game has a Science Fiction aesthetic. Personally, this is my preferred setting for these kinds of games. The theme is that there was a nuclear war and before everyone died they built these huge cliffs, somehow. The game then revolves around a gigantic space station in orbit slowly moving its population to earth to recolonise the planet. As the planet is so toxic, the entire population needs to live on top of these cliffs, as for some reason there is less radiation there. I feel the setting is a little contrived and besides some cool late-game stuff it is largely irrelevant. Basically, it is just an excuse to have these spire-like platforms to build your cities on which introduces a very compact and space-efficient gameplay style. What sets this game apart from many of the other city builders, even the AAA ones, is that Cliff Empires does a fantastic job of keeping you interested through continually changing the focus of what you are doing and adding new gameplay ideas into the game. A common problem in city builders is that that player gets to a point where they have basically seen everything the game has to offer, and now they are just tasked with making the city bigger and better. Cliff Empire, on the other hand, keeps introducing radical game changes that completely change the way you're playing your map. Now sure transitioning has always been a part of most city builders. Switching from Horse and Cart to Trains or whatever, but with Cliff Empire and it's space-efficient gameplay, the player is forced to practically redesign their city multiple times over the course of the game. So in this game, you get to that point where your cities are stable and everything is just slowly getting bigger. This is where most games have their end game and stop doing anything new, but instead, a new "phase" of Cliff Empire starts and its as if you are back in mid-game again and suddenly you have a ton of stuff to do to rejig your layouts and production chains and stuff. I just found that this has kept this game so fresh and fun as there is always something to work towards, something ahead of you to achieve and that achievement then radically changes the game. It is not just some new building, it is something that will make you demolish tons of your city and rebuild it back to being stable. If I was a dev and making a city builder, and NOT taking some cues from this game's design then I would be a dinosaur. I honestly think this lot have built a game that is a positive step towards a solution for the stagnant end game problem that plagues this genre. That being said Cliff Empire is a long game. The entire design of the unlocks and tech is done in a way that allows the player to really build the cities, and then rebuilding them. It gives you time. If the unlocks were too quick, like most builders, you would just build the final form from the start. While I love the pacing of this game, I can see that some players would be frustrated that after hours and hours of gameplay they still have not unlocked most of what this game has to offer. In fact, looking at the achievements I can see that many people have not experienced most of what this game provides. This is the kind of thing that only an indie dev could do, as my own experience in AAA studios tells me that putting dev time into parts of the game that is seen by only a few is rare. Yet this is exactly why the game is unique and so good. This is a game that rewards the players that like it by giving them more and more, rather than blowing everything early, providing a great start and a bad end. Verdict : A great game with a great plan for its end game

Cliff Empire shows an extremely promising start with a solid foundation to make it a complex and engaging city builder. You start with picking a spot on your cliff for a storage depot, which is dropped pre-built and loaded with resources and drones from a space station. From there you have a fairly specific building order that is explained by the comprehensive tutorial. You need a power source, residences, landing platform, food and water, battery charger, and portal for selling things back to the the space station. Batteries are used to keep power running in your city when your sources fail. Solar panels don’t work at night and wind can change from day to day. If you’re over-producing on power, the excess is charched into batteries that keep the power on, or can be used to build vehicles or even sold for profit. 3D printer factories can build consumer goods to sell and engines for your drones. For travel you build suspension bridges that allow trading between cities, which opens up the optimization possibilities. There are all kind of services to provide your people with health care and entertainment, and also a research system that can improve just about every facet of your cities. The concepts in Cliff Empire are strong and the building has quite a lot of strategy to it, but you can more or less solve it fast and you are then left with just maintaining the balancing. Should you get Cliff Empire now?. There is a solid foundation, but not a whole lot to do at the moment. I really enjoy what is there already and am excited to see what future development adds to the game. THE GOOD - Solid foundation - Quite a few structures and goods to produce - Nice art style THE BAD - Early Access - Not much to do when city is build - Limited data feedback
If you like this review, then please consider giving it a thumbs up.

Well now, where to start. Hmm, I guess with a TLDR for the impatient crowd.
TLDR:
Cliff Empire is a small city builder for a reasonable price. The graphics are pretty nice. The music is alright for a city builder, not too intrusive but nice enough to not turn off. The game play is where I think it loses a bunch of people judging by the reviews; it is a slow burn play style that needs a bit of planning. All in all, I think it is a 8/10ish type of game.
General Opinion:
After reading many reviews myself, rather than posting on those reviews, I will say what I think about some of the complaints. There seems to be a running theme about the game's run speed. While I don't wholly disagree, I think it is more a matter of opinion than an actual "flaw". You can build a city that can function well at very fast game speeds, even with disasters turned on. But, and for me this is a rather large but, at 6X speed (the fastest the game will run) unless you are paying fairly close attention there are things that can quickly get away from you. It is sort of a push-pull mechanic game, you push something in one area and something else pulls away; often very subtly and difficult to find. This is in no way a fast paced RTS. It isn't like Command and Conquer. (Wow! How freakin' old is that reference. For those lazy and curious 24 years for the first game and 16 years for the one I liked, Generals Zero Hour.) It is much more like Banished set in a different theme. You have to build a little then wait a while, rinse and repeat. After playing a couple of games I started looking at some of the guilds and tip manuals. I saw a bunch of pretty complicated, "If you don't do this by this time you have lost" guides that, in my experience, just aren't true. I have built 2 or 3 fully functional and successful cities that look nothing like these complicated guides. The economy. This seems to be a major sticking point for a lot of people. It is slow. I think this is more of a modern gaming culture problem than it is a game flaw. It seems to me after reading the many "slow economy" complaints that many of the player want everything in the game to move faster. (We don't have time to play this game we are playing and the devs should make it to where we can play a whole game in whatever length of time we think it should take.) I don't disagree with them, it is slow. It is a game that involves patients and planning. I don't think every game should be this way, but this one is. I am getting older, slower isn't always a bad thing. The economy is just fine. Trading is fine. It just takes some creative thinking to "get around" their limitations. I know that "creative thinking" is a negative in some groups, but I enjoy being challenged on an intellectual level more than - do I have good "twitch" reflexes. Onwards.
The Good
The graphics are, as I said, pretty nice. Could they be better, sure. Could the game cost much more that $12, absolutely. I would never buy a mid-line Chevy and expect it to be a Ferrari. It is what it is, an affordable, well put together city builder. The game doesn't depend on the graphics to hold it up. The graphics serve the game well and I found them not only passable but nice and pleasing. The sound. Again, nothing here to blow anyone away. But, it works fine and does what it needs to do when it needs to do it. The game play is interesting and engaging. Yes it is slow. I think I would like this game less if it were actually much faster. I have played other games that the slow complaints were valid and really only needed an "absurd" speed to make them better. I don't think this is one of them.
The Bad
This is a hard one for me. I thought I had found some bugs but after thinking about them they were not bugs. They are game designs. The biggest and most notable "bad" in my opinion is that it is a bit of a CPU hog. A lot of these kind of games are. I still play Civ V and it still amazes me at the amount of CPU that game requires. Being honest a lot of it comes down to my CPU. It is getting old like me. I have a 5 year old 4790k. It still handles most things very well but it is starting to show its age. All that being said, I have never seen the FPS drop below 60. On my rig it tops out at 70fps but that is a monitor bottle neck I don't have the $$$ to remedy. Oh, and all of that is at 2560 x 1440p. The problem is that the old rig can get a little toasty, nothing damaging but definitely toasty.
Fin
I know it was a bit of a ramble and probably less info than I should have but I am not a paid reviewer. I think the game is a very passable city builder with its own personality. I like it. You don't have to like it. Much like people, whether you like them or not makes little difference to the notion of them being good or bad; it just means you like them or not. To me this game reminds me a little of my Banished experience. At first I didn't really like it much and it frustrated me a little because I didn't understand the general concept of the game. Then I played it again a little later and had a sort of "light bulb" moment and it all made sense. I like this game. You might like it too. -D

Someone obviously loved this, and put a lot of hard work into it. It shows. Overall the game is fun. There are some significant flaws, but they can generally either be overlooked, or worked around. Positive: - Visuals and 'feel' are well done - Resource management is fun, watching a city grow up from nothing is great. - Although thin, it has a plot and advancement in this plot feels rewarding. Negative: - Events need serious work: the game will give you objectives that are physically impossible to complete with what you have, then punish you when you fail to fulfill them. These can be turned off, which I did. - At times, the game can feel samey/grindy. Once you have a well-balanced setup, it can be a matter of accumulating enough (item) to proceed. At one point, I got tired of waiting, and literally went out to do errands while the meter finished filling. - At times, the mechanics of the game are not clear and you have to learn by trial and error. Use more than one save file! - The English in the game is iffy.

This single-player city building/logistics game is basically of the same category as Banished and the Anno games, but set in an icy, space-age post-apocalyptic world. I didn't think I'd want to play another city-building game, after playing a couple of medieval-era ones, but due to the futuristic setting, Cliff Empire is refreshingly different enough to gain my immersion for a while, and it works flawlessly. But at the end of the day, it is just another city-building resource-management game.
