Welcome to ChromaTec’s test lab! You’re here to test our newest, state-of-the-art military-grade color-technology: The ChromaGun (patent pending)! Use it to try and solve our meticulously designed test chambers. The basic principle is as easy as applying it is complex: Exit the chambers via the exit doors. But be weary of the WorkerDroids in charge of maintaining the chambers. They’re not exactly what you and I would call “human friendly”.

Use the ChromaGun to colorize walls and WorkerDroids to progress in the chambers. WorkerDroids are attracted to walls of the same color. Using that mechanic, try to reach the exit door of each chamber. Some doors are more complicated to use than others: They can only be opened using door triggers and only stay open as long as the triggers are occupied.

If all of this sounds like your brain can handle it, congratulations! You’re the perfect candidate for our test chambers!

That being said, welcome and good luck!

I love puzzle games like this one, and Magrunner, and the Portals. I'm 70 yrs. old and I'm trying to keep my brain sharp. But when the game designers INCLUDE a NECESSITY for DEXTERITY in the game, it really ticks me off. I get really disappointed by the fact that I paid the same price as anyone else, or close to it, but I don't get to finish the game, because my fingers aren't as fast as my brain. This game does just that. I love the whole concept of mixing the colors to open the doors, and even getting the colors in the right orders. It's a cool concept and fun to play and solve the puzzles. BUT here I am running from a fire that my fingers just aren't fast enough to solve the puzzle. Although I know WHAT to do, I can't physically do it. Maybe I could if I did it over and over and over a million times, but I don't care to do that, that's why I bought a PUZZLE game. Maybe I should have waited a while to cool down before I wrote this. I recommend this game for anyone that loves puzzles, AND has the DEXTERITY to solve them!

It tries to be Portal and fails. The great thing about Portal is that it's next to impossible to get stuck: sure you can die, but given portals are temporary and destroyed items respawn, there's rarely anything you can't undo. Not so in Chromagun. Once you paint something, you can't unpaint it. Paint something red, the best you can do is make it purple or orange, you will never be able to make it blue or yellow. And that means that it's very easy to make a mistake you can't come back from, and frankly that spoils things. The puzzles we enjoy, if you make a mistake you can undo it, be that by overwriting it in pen, or jumping back through that portal. Long story short: tries to be Portal, acknowledges it's trying to be Portal, fails miserably at being Portal. Seriously, why didn't they provide a paint stripper function on this gun?

Playing this reminded me of all the things that Portal 1 and 2 did right, because this game has none of them. Aside from all the small things that degrade gameplay, the puzzles were completely boring to solve (when they weren't extremely broken - I swear I completed several puzzles where I had no clue what the developer intended, because I didn't need even half of the testing elements). The "story" (if it can be called that) was so minimal that, near the end, I had to check settings to see if I accidentally turned off the narrator's voice.

Surprisingly awesome game. I'm glad I ignored the negative reviews and bought this anyway because they mostly boil down to these arguments: 1) This game is not as iconic or as great as Portal. I mean, no duh? You're comparing the Valve behemoth against this indie studio. I agree the story is barebones and could be richer but damn, man, lower your expectations for a game that you snatched for $2.59. The story is rather lacking but the gameplay is polished nicely. 2) You can't unpaint walls and droids, so you can get stuck easily. It's a valid point but having an unpaint button would break most puzzles and defeat the whole challenge. Getting stuck is not a good design choice but the game wouldn't work otherwise. I wish it simply had quicksave/quickload though. But the real issue here is that early levels can feature 2-3 small puzzles in one go so if you screw up the last bit you have to redo the rest. This isn't a big problem on its own but it makes you worry that you'll have to restart/redo a lot more later on. You won't. Later when puzzles get more challenging they are always short and one-at-a-time, so if you do screw up and get stuck you just think "ah okay I can't do that, let's try again" and retry. TL;DR this is not ideal but it's much less of an issue that some people claim it to be. 3) The game requires (as one reviewer said) "ridiculous reflexes". That's a huge overexaggeration. There are indeed two chase sequences and a few levels with timed elements. For those you'll need some absolute basic FPS gaming skills to somewhat quickly aim and fire at a few walls in a row for instance. Personally I found it to be trivial in difficulty. Anyone who played counter-strike or whatever for five minutes should be able to do it as well. There's some 70 year old reviewer who couldn't get through the game so I guess there is some barrier to it? But seriously, even Portal itself is more demanding than this. You'll be fine. Anyways, I enjoyed it quite a lot. It's one of those puzzle games that stays creative from start to end. Instead of becoming overly obscure and complex it keeps introducing new ways to interact with the game mechanics. Basically for the most part it's "here's something new and cool, figure it out" every few levels rather than "ok here's the same thing but MUCH harder". I loved that about Chromagun. I was worried that I won't be able to handle color-mixing puzzles but it honestly wasn't nearly as bad as I thought. You just have 6 different colors (3 basic + 3 from mixing), not counting black that you get by painting something more than twice. It turns out it's not hard to wrap your head around that at all.

I nearly didn't buy ChromaGun because I read in another review that the difficulty spiked and the game went from gentle puzzling to demanding serious dexterity. I'm glad I chose to try it anyway. For context, let me explain that I am an average gamer in my early-fifties with serious sight issues, and yet I completed the game in around 10 hours with 100% achievements. The puzzles ranged from easy to mildly challenging. The basic mechanic of manipulating droids by changing their colour, or the colour of their surroundings, is a neat one. The devs have borrowed Portal's premise of a guy (or gal) going through test chambers. Critics might say this is unoriginal and I suppose they have a point, but at least it's better than the cheesy 'contestant in a deadly game show' format utilised by several of the other games in this genre. It also means Chromagun's levels are bite-size - some of them take a few seconds to complete once you're figured the solution - so if you screw up it's no hardship to restart and try again. This makes it a good game to boot up whether you have ten minutes to kill or wish to spend a few hours gaming. To sum up, ChromaGun isn't an ambitious game. The graphics and sound are solid and unpretentious, it's slick and bug-free, and there's a welcome side serving of humour in the voice over. Recommend. 8/10

Of course I have to use the 'P'-word to describe this game. Test chambers, announcer guide narrator, things placed in a spot to open an exit, gun-tool that does stuff. If you need a break from the thousands and thousands of Portal levels out there but still want to run around and open up doors, definitely give ChromaGun a shot. The premise is simple: Like-colors attract like-colors. Spray things the same color to attract them, or off-color to let them go. Open the exit door. I'm halfway through now, and am enjoying the game a LOT. Color coding things is starting to get tougher, where I have to plan many steps ahead, programming the wall colors to lead a color somewhere when I'm somewhere else. Love it. If there's a negative to the game so far, it's that I wish that I could undo a move. Not re-paint a thing ... but just step back in time to undo / un-paint and proceed again from there. Working on a level for 5 minutes, then realizing that I should have done something differently is ok, but having to restart the level from scratch is a bit of a bummer. Add to that the gun ... I wish that the color pipes roatated or changed to match the color ring. I keep thinking I'm spraying yellow (on top) when my ring is blue or red. That's not a big thing, just me wishing for a neat little improvement.

Meh... People are comparing this game to portal for a good reason: it tries really hard to imitate portal in all the dimensions, but fails everywhere: - most importantly, puzzles are not challenging at all (took me ~2 hours to finish it) - story is essentially non-existent - you hear the narrator maybe on 5-6 occasions throughout the whole game - and the jokes are blantly stupid (the "ironical" component of them usually goes like "we thought you were a complete idiot, but it seems that the 'complete' part was incorrect" - btw, just wrote this and realized that this is better than all the 'jokes' in the game)

This is the closest we'll ever get to a Portal sequel since Valve can't count to 3.

I recommend it, yes. Only after you've played Portal, Portal 2, Talos Principle, Road to Gehena, Qube, and Qube 2. So, after you've played all the good puzzle games, you can also play this more mediocre one.

ChromaGun was a lot of fun. I am pretty picky about puzzle games because I find most of the time they try to be overly complex bordering on pretentious. ChromaGun didn’t do that. I got stumped all of twice and was able to figure out how to proceed all on my own without guides or videos. The difficulty curve just felt well done as new types of puzzles are added often without any explanation, or with very little, yet they’re very intuitive and follow common sense. The humour is spot on and the person who voiced the overseer did a fantastic job. There isn’t much in the way of a story to ChromaGun but I didn’t really mind. The game has a great pace to it. Each room takes anywhere from 30 seconds to 5-10 minutes. Even if you don’t like the room you’re in it will be over pretty quickly and you’re on to the next one. I had only two major gripes with the game: one being that you couldn’t wipe colors and the other being a timed puzzle in the last level. The lack of ability to wipe away colors means that if you screw up you have to restart the room. This may not seem like a huge deal since the rooms don’t take a long amount of time to finish but it is still annoying and something that could have been avoided or fixed. As for that last level I wasn’t too angry. I hate timed missions on principle and I did have to restart the room multiple times trying to beat the clock but as I said before the inconvenience didn’t last long. The graphics are simple but well done. Most of the rooms are majority white so as to show off the colors of the paint but the droids are well done and the few bits of the game that has something to show off were good. There is good detail on fruit that is left on desks and the clothing on people for instance. The detail on peoples faces and on plants could have been better though. I played ChromaGun on Linux. It never crashed on me at all. I didn’t notice any glitches or bugs. Alt-Tab didn’t work. It opened on the wrong monitor once but after that never did it again. The only graphics options are for resolution; motion blur; and a toggle for image effects. There is no manual save option. The game auto saves after each room is completed which works out well given the short time each room takes. I played version 2017.05.12 Build 120 of ChromaGun. It uses the Unity engine. It takes up 1104MB of disk space. During play my GPU usage was 27-66%; my VRAM usage was 797-900MB; my CPU usage was 2-21%; my RAM usage was 2.9-3.2GB and my framerate ranged from 71-126 FPS. I recommend ChromaGun to anyone who enjoys games such as Portal. It lacks the story of Portal but the gameplay more than rises to the challenge. I finished the story mode in 4 hours and 40 minutes. I paid $13.99 CAD for the game and find that to be great value. Even $20 would have been worth it. There is a demo available that I implore people to try if you’re interested. The demo is Windows only but worked with Proton for me on Linux. My Score: 8.5/10 My System: AMD Ryzen 5 2600X | 16GB DDR4-3000 CL15 | MSI RX 580 8GB Gaming X | Mesa 19.3.4 | Samsung 850 Evo 250GB | Manjaro 19.0.0 | Mate 1.24 | Kernel 5.5.2-1-MANJARO
