It should be illegal for an auto-runner to have level design this good and skill ceiling this high. Let's be honest, how high are your expectations from a darn auto-runner? Mine were very low. And they got blown apart. See, apart from the game having such mechanics that your completion time highly depends on your skill (thus spawning a speedrunning community), the level design in Chameleon Run is ridiculously good. On every of the 25 levels (excluding tutorials), you basically have five objectives: * Collect all spheres (must acquire all in one run and then finish the level) * Collect all crystals (same concept, different objects) * Finish the level without switching color * Acquire the secret item (hard to reach and/or finish the level after getting it) * Complete the level with a 3-star rating (basically time trial) What this means is that you need to come up with 5 different routes on every single level to 100% the game. And this is in basically 2D, too. The creativity of level design in this game blows my mind and should be a textbook example for other devs. If this can be done in 2D then you have no excuse to have bland non-replayable levels in 3D games :)

Chameleon run is an autorunner where the gimmick is switching colors to match the platforms you traverse through, fail to do so, and you're going back to the start of the level. Gameplay wise is there this game instantly fails, the color gimmick isn't really used interestingly enough until the final stages and by that point the games over with, and most of the stages just feel bland with no threats to really make the levels interesting or hard to play through, there's 3 objectives in each level, 2 of which (the marbles and crystals) are a complete joke and pad out the games length, the never switching colors one is cool but the paths are sometimes just a complete detour rather than traversing the same level with a setback, ruining the chances of it being more interesting, then there's the 3 star times which are actually good, its fun to whizz through each level and offers a lot of tricks to get your speed going, and then once all levels are complete you get hidden stars to go find in each level, like jee man we have to beat each level 5 fucking separate times to complete it!? good lord, its tedious and none of the levels are charming enough to warrant it. The graphics are pretty basic, and honestly i don't like them, all worlds basically look the same and there's not much going on with the colored platforms, thinking about it there's only 3 platforms in this game, yellow, pink and black and with no variety on the color palette the whole game lacks charm and life to it, it all looks the same and nothing sticks out. The music is where this game really began to tick me off, something about it really irks me and i just can't stand it its not quite upbeat, its not quite slow either, they picked a set of music which matches the whole games theme entirely: cheapish. Its not minimal nor is it stylistic enough to have flair to it, instead it comes off as a droning sound in the background which my brain just started automatically ignoring and instead i ended up putting my own music on. Overall a very mediocre game, its an example of where minimalism doesn't have to be entirely minimal, look at games like: N++, Soundodger, Superhot, Super hexagon and Downwell to see examples of games where they took on minimal simple styles but made them work due to the charm and creativity put into them, this game lacks a lot of creative decision and made the whole experience feel flat and dull.

Like with my review for VVVVVV, I never really finished this game fully but from what I play, it's a very fun and easy to learn - hard to master games i've played. Review: This game has one basic rule, you change from color pink to yellow and that's it, while that sounds like your typical rules, the level design is mainly built around your moveset, you can jump, double jump, jump under colored platforms and besides walls, their's hoverboards that make you go way too fast and their some objectives like collecting orbs, crystals, and beating a level under a time limit but hey, their's a leaderboard to compete against incouraging you to get better as a result plus when will change colors right before you land, you get a little boost which is useful to say the least. Graphics: simple but fine Sound and Music: Nothing to special here Is their anything wrong with this game? No, not at all! Rating: 7/10 In conclusion, pretty fun game to the end but nothing really negative to say about this game it's like a very simple concept.

I really like this name. It is very fun, and even though it has an extremely simple basic mechanic, it does so much with it and has many legitimately hard levels. I bought this on steam after completing the mobile version of this game, and if you have also played the mobile game I would suggest you do the same. For this version, 6 out of the 30 levels are unique, with the other 24 also being in the mobile game. The mobile game itself has 4 unique levels on top of the 24 shared ones. A full accounting of that is all here . Anyway, this is a great game. I would totally recommend it, even if you have played the mobile game already.

I discovered this game on the Google Play Store a year or two ago when the developer was giving it away for free. I tried it out on my phone, really enjoyed it, but didn't play much of it after that. After all that time of not playing, it was an unexpected but very welcome surprise to see the game on Steam, so I gladly purchased it when it went on sale! I really like the flow and controls of this auto-runner, as well as the aesthethic and the music of the game. The music is great! Something else unexpected but very welcome about this game is that, when you finish the last mission, you can then go on to find hidden stars on each level. So cool! If you like mobile auto-runners without annoying micro-transactions, then I recommend you give Chameleon Run a go! It's a great game to play while listening to something else, and I believe it's worth it even at full price. P.S.: Workshop support for this game would be amazing :)

I never saw the appeal or point of runners and chameleon run deluxe is only the second one I've ever played after bit.trip runner, and since I didn't get far in that one (still found it kinda fun initially), I expected something similar here. since all you do in this one is jump and change between two colors, as you have to match the color of the object you're about to touch, it's a lot simpler, but the game is by no means easy. holding jump (up arrow on the keyboard, controller also works) makes you go further, double jump is a thing too, and the left arrow is used to switch colors. even better news: hitting a wall isn't necessarily a fail, you might be able to manoeuvre back. there are 30 levels in 4 worlds, one unlocked at a time, but you'll have to do multiple runs to complete all the objectives and get 3 stars. the former includes two kinds of collectibles, once they're done, the no color switch goal becomes available for said level, plus after completing the game, a hidden star appears on each level, serving as another objective. completing these give one chameleon each, you'll need 35 altogether to unlock every level. as for the star rating, it's only based on time, but you won't be able to get far initially, as completing objectives adds speed boosters and unlocks more blocks on the levels, creating alternate paths and shortcuts, but even then it won't be a trivial matter to 3-star everything. and while memorization works for the most part, levels toward the end randomize the color of certain sections, so can't rely on memory alone there. the presentation is great, slick graphics, good music that didn't really get on my nerves and non-annoying sound effects, though when you run the game for the first time, it drops you straight into the action and I just kept playing level after level, so only found the main menu with the settings when I wanted to quit. separate volumes and flip controls are available, but I'd prefer if both arrows did the switching by default. when you fail, restart is instantaneous, no loading times, an essential feature in games like this, but I wish there was a restart hotkey too, pressing esc and selecting restart can be a pain. and it's annoying that there's a mouse cursor, but it doesn't do anything, nor does it disappear while playing. as I said above, I'm not an authority on runners, didn't bother with all the objectives (the stars are even crazier than the rest), nor did I manage more than a couple 2-star ratings and no 3 stars at all, but had a lot of fun and managed to unlock and complete every level, which is a lot more than I'd expected. definitely recommended for fans of runners, or anybody looking to try something out of their comfort zone.
