It's a decent enough investigation/room escape game and after playing the demo I was pleasantly reminded of the likes of The Room and The Return of the Obra Dinn but the game needs a LOT of quality-of-life fixes and bug fixes before I'd recommend it. The most frustrating issue for me is that the inventory is incredibly limited which means that if you don't solve the puzzles in the order the developers intended you can end up with a lot of items cluttering up your inventory that actually prevent you from picking up keys and other important items you need to progress. There's a lot to like here but at the moment it's too rough for me to really recommend. Edit: Thanks to the developers for responding. I appreciate that I reviewed this on the day of release and updates have since been implemented based on feedback.

This game seemed to have everything I wanted. It had a nice premise, the game looked good in screenshots, it seemed like it would have a spooky atmosphere but not outright be horror. And for about half the game, things were fine. But then problems began to pile up. Some of the issues are almost certainly some kind of translation error or editing errors. The (seemingly) east wing key is labeled the west wing key. The sword key is actually for the coat of arms doors. Some of the puzzles are written in a way which makes it almost impossible to get the correct answer from the information given. No matter how many times my friend and I read the mask puzzle clues, we could not really come up with the solution that ended up being correct because they just didn't fit. Other issues involve some pixel-hunting where it's not immediately obvious that there is a necessary item available. In one puzzle later in the game, upon solving it you immediately get handed an item. Your inventory opens and you see it there. What isn't noticeable is that there is a key that you have to pick up that is *also* now available from the puzzle location. The good news to some of these issues is that there is a hint system and it can be more useful than other games with such a system. The other good news is that if you run into a puzzle or lock (aside from locked doors), the game will keep track of it on the map. The bad news is that the hint system doesn't tell you the answers to the puzzles, it only tells you where you should go next and (to some extent) what you should have in order to do the next thing to progress. If you're stuck on a puzzle, it will never tell you what the answer is. Just that you need to do that puzzle. The game didn't need a *lot* more to be good, but it did need more. It needed more playtesting and adjustments to the writing so that puzzles are doable with the information at hand. It needed to make usable objects somewhat more visually distinct. It needed a "damn the torpedoes" skip-the-puzzle option. As it is, it's so close to being recommended, but I can't honestly do so.

One of my favorite puzzle games. The puzzles are fun and quick. I enjoyed searching around the exquisite manor.

Crimson Manor is the kind of game that I enjoy: A complicated environment to explore at my leisure with puzzles everywhere and a story told through notes, documents, and photos. No NPCs, no dialog, and no wild guessing on how to use inventory. It reminded me of Gordian Rooms and Escape: The Brothers Saloon (although I think Crimson Manor is a bit easier). You explore the 3D mansion from a first person perspective. Your employer has died and you are the executor of his estate. Your job is to enter the manor and locate his will. In the course of your search, you find that he has some questionable 'extra-curricular' activities. You move freely through the mansion using a controller or the WASD keys. Puzzles include mechanical exercises (which require no clues), inventory 'find-and-use,' and conundrums which are solved by paying attention to the environment. There are dozens of keys/combinations to find, boxes to open, and doors to unlock. While the mansion initially feels like a labyrinth, you soon discover a very helpful set of floor plans. By the end of the game, I was moving from room to room as if I had lived there for years. If you do a thorough search of all rooms, opening drawers and cabinets, and interacting with everything possible, you should earn 100% of the achievements.. There is a hint system in case you need a directional nudge. There is also a journal that records some of the more critical clues. I took a lot of notes and would recommend using screenshots and having a pencil in hand. Quite a bit of important information can not be carried with you and is not recorded in the journal. The game auto-saves on exit. You are not always returned to your exit location, but puzzle progress and inventory always reflected my most current activities. There is no option to manually save but this was not an issue for me since there were no 'points of no return' that would warrant rolling back to a prior save. I ended up playing without my headphones because I found the sound track to be a bit distracting. As you are moving about rooms, there are clunks and creaks in the background. Perhaps this was meant to create an air of creepiness in the abandoned house. I kept thinking my actions might have caused the noise (which was not true). So, silence was golden for me. This game hooked me into losing track of time and playing (almost) straight through. I highly recommend Crimson Manor if you enjoy exploring and puzzling your way through an interesting story with a twist at the end. If you are an experienced 'escape the room' player, you'll need to think on your virtual feet but should be able to sail through this game without frustration.

Great game for people who like a challenge. I found the lack of in-game clues a little off-putting, would have loved to have a map that shows the riddles I have interacted with but found no solution for. It's a big mansion with many rooms and I found myself running around cluelessly on multiple occasions. At this stage, it absolutely makes sense to take as many notes as possible about the whereabouts of the puzzles and clues. If you know this from the start and like the manual note-taking aspect of puzzle games, I absolutely recommend this game.

Unfortunately I cannot recommend this game. I encountered game breaking glitches which forced me to restart the game. The first was about half way through which involved a sliding block puzzle where the pieces clipped through one another and became locked up, halting progression and forcing a restart. The second major glitch was near the end of the game where a hallway failed to load in properly and left my character permanently floating through an endless void which prevented me from completing the game. Outside of the glitches, gameplay started off promising, but I felt like the puzzles became less interesting in the later half of the game. Several feeling less like actual puzzles and more like fetch quests or playing "find the key". The mansion itself was enjoyable to explore, but the game never expands beyond its walls. There are no surprising areas, just more well decorated Victorian rooms.

TL/DR: Bought it in a sale, did not regret it at all :) If you're up to a complex puzzle in a Victorian Mansion, this is your call. Pros: - Great graphics, eerie music - Interesting and fun details (contemporary Victorian ink glasses, matchboxes, etc. to check out) - Grim story line - Hard, complex puzzles (the complexity of puzzles does not lie in solving them at a table/on spot, but putting together all the info you gather throughout the mansion. I'm not exaggerating, grab your pen and paper and start making notes) Cons: - If you can't play through with one sit and you quit the game, the next day you won't be able to remember your progress, as there's no option to make in-game notes, map notes, and the flow of the game is very complex - Can't check your task history, only upcoming tasks are visible - Can't save multiple game plays, which would be nice, because SPOILER: you have to play the whole game again to check out both endings Warm advice: pen & paper! All in all LOVED it! Definitely worth it for those who love puzzles in the Victorian era

To start: Discover what really happened to the Strange family by following cryptic messages and snooping through their belongings. The Positives + First-person exploration puzzler that consists of going from room to room in a Victorian era mansion. + A sprawling mansion filled with detail; get to know the family through the rich environment. + An interesting story that unfolds over time and concludes in a satisfying way. + Good variety in the large number of puzzles, from straightforward riddles to real head-scratchers. + Exploration and puzzles are rather nonlinear—it's possible to be solving several puzzles at once. The Negatives - The size of the mansion has a downside as, while there’s a map, there’s no way to indicate where things are—something seen an hour or more ago will suddenly become relevant, and this makes aimless wandering unavoidable unless regularly consulting the hint system or a guide. - The atmosphere, while initially good with the use of creepy background noise, becomes less effective over time due to those sounds being on a loop. To end: Don’t expect danger or disturbing imagery, if anything it's a relaxing game filled to the brim with keys and other items to find in order to progress. Opinions are my own and reflect my experience.

This game has potential but it should not have been released in such a buggy state. Asking people to pay money to be your beta testers is not a good way to build a reputation. Truly, though, even without the bugs I would still find it hard to give it more than a reluctant thumbs up. Play it if you, like me, really enjoy these kinds of puzzle games, but expect a lot of frustration. Maybe it's best to wait for the dev's next game in the hope that they learned lessons from their mistakes in making and publishing this one. Let's start with the good: the manor is nicely designed and indeed quite pretty. The story is interesting and the ending excellent. But the actual gameplay is a mess, with puzzles veering from silly trial-and-error busywork, annoying backtracking (you find lots of keys for the other side of the house), and just really clunky. Several times they were "difficult" because the UI and affordances were terrible. I was stuck on one for a long time because I didn't realize you could turn one part of the puzzle around. There was no indication that it was possible. And also sometimes the relevant items were so, so tiny and easy to miss. I want to be challenged by puzzles, not by a game's poor presentation. Bugs, so many bugs! One puzzle completely broke for me and I had to skip it (luckily it was possible in that case). Most baffling is the wacky hint system, which seems to be linked to where you are rather than what you have. Hints like "this item can go there", even if you don't even have that item. It became so funny that I pressed "hint" all the time just to see what would come up, and it was invariably wrong. And sometimes ... it would just tell you the answer to a puzzle! Nice "hint". Hilarious design. There's also a lack of polish with the editing. There are spelling mistakes, for one, and -- this might sound petty -- a lot of talk about "genes" and "genomes" ... but the game takes place in the wrong century for that discovery. Simple historical research or just more pairs of eyes looking at the script and game could have avoided this and other embarrassments. Finally, I played with a controller, which was a big mistake. It made many puzzles quite finicky indeed, and weirdly the walking speed was all over the place. Sometimes I moved quickly, sometimes slowly, and for the life of me I couldn't figure out on what it depended. Devs, a game isn't ready to ship when you finish making it. It's ready when you've tested it and can stand behind its quality.
