Not that bad, considered that you will most probably get this one as a coupon and so, at 0,10€. The game itself is a classic first-person shooter, which takes many ideas and elements from our '90s games of this kind. I'm not a big fan of this genres, but if the games are short and run fast and smooth I can enjoy them all.. I wanna have no boundaries at all when it comes to gaming, although of course I've got my favourites :) There's lots of splatter and blood out here, although there isn't a great variety of enemies (but yeah, of weapons it's definitely good), and it took me some hours to get used to the mechanisms and mostly to get new weapons and to manage to kill everything xD Of course there's also the survival mode, besides of the normal campaign one. The story isn't that good, but as I said it's an indie game and it's a shooter so, who cares? The world gets infected, people transform into monsters and you're part of a squad that has to exterminate them, that's all. And for 0,10€, it's good xD I have to say as a sidenote that I think I enjoyed this game even because it reminded me a lot (obviously in a less polished way) of those games like Duke Nukem or Quake or I don't even remember 'cos I don't play them since the '90s. Back then, we used to play everything 'cos here in Europe we had to play what we were given, so we played everything from Mario to Mortal Kombat to JRPGs and whatever, and many shooters too. And Tomb Raider also. And this game reminded me a lot of those old shooters on our Windows98 PCs. So if you have this on discount and if you like to enter rooms and shoot enemies without thinking of anything else, this is a nice Unity-based title.

There should really be a neutral button for games like these. It's not a bad game, it's not great either. It's a fun little budget game. It plays like an old school arcade PC shooter like Duke Nukem, Blood, FEAR or Doom. Take your pick. It's got nice atmosphere, great assortment of guns, lots of blood and gore but after a while the game gets a bit repetitive. Still, it's not a bad game. If you see it on sale, get it. It's usually on sale for $1 or less. 6.5/10 for me.

i could give this game a recommend if it was in early access but its not i came for an "old school shooter" here is what that means to me X-a non regenerating health system (check) X-carry all your weapons at once (check) X-sprawling non linear levels (no) the levels do that annoying thing where they put up arbitrary forcefeilds when its time for some enemies to spawn, a true oldschool shooter does not spawn enemies (often) they should ALREADY BE THERE, unfrotunately in this game they just pop in in hordes which is no fun X-secrets (no, atleast that i could find anyway) X-persistent corpses (no) this one is so underrated but so fundamental to the oldschool experience, it adds to much immersion to turn around and see all the things you killed.....sadly this game cant handle having the corpses left behind and they dissapear fast, and even then it chugs framewise, and the blood effect left behidn by every enemy (which also fades) is terrible and its filled with bugs, i beat one level by walking through a wall that an enemy was supposed to burst through, but i did it before he spawned and the wall was only cosmetic make a REAL oldschool game devs, then i will shower you with frankly embarassing amounts of cash

This is and old-shool look-alike FPS. The game itself is not that good, but it is rather fun to play. The horror and stress of playing the first 3 to 4 levels is what made me review this game as a good game. The music makes its job really good, mostly if played with headphones. Playing in hard is challenging, but extreme is just madness. I guess I am not that good at FPS after all. The (in my opinion) broken spawning enemy system together with the creepy music and the roar of the monsters provide a great suspense and tense action shooting experience. I would say from level 5 onwards the game gets a little more boring, with several level design flaws, but it is still fun to shoot around. The final boss is nice to kill, but rather overpowered if you are not skillful enough. Overall, I would recommend the game just to have one or maybe two rounds of fun.

-A Total Middle of the Road Experience- Putrefaction is one of those games that makes me wish the Steam reviews section had a rating that was right in the middle. I've played through Putrefaction on "normal" once, dabbled in survival and have a game on the "hard" setting started. The game is enjoyable enough but not wholly recommendable either. On the other hand, it was pretty fun while it lasted. Unlike a game I really, really enjoy and am encouraged to come back and play all of the difficulties, Putrefaction feels like a chore already to start over. In the game you play as an unnamed operative who is sent in to clean up a monster-creating infection in some underground stronghold beneath a mountain. That is as much story as you're going to get. This game probably has less story/atmosphere than Doom I, Quake I and the first Serious Sam. In this game you get equipped with a fun selection of various guns and blast your way through levels crammed with ugly baddies. There's no voice-acting or other distractions to keep you from the task at hand. This game makes even Doom and Quake seem complicated as there are no secrets to be found, keycards or otherwise. As much as I love a back to basics game, this one feels like a totally dry piece of toast with no jam or butter added for flavor. The shooting is fine for the most part. Sometimes things will hiccup graphically but overall I had very little trouble there. The guns are cool, satisfying to use and do some Soldier of Fortune-esque gore damage to the monsters. Monster A.I. on the other hand is dumber than dirt for the most part. You can jump on top of a box if you're having any trouble (and it wasn't very difficult on normal overall), and just pick off ranged enemies while the landlubbers dumbly run up against it...trying to nail you yet being too stupid to figure out how. At least those classic games had beasties that each had their own way of making their demise a pain in the butt. Thankfully some small enemies, ones with guns, a type that rolls, a self-destructor, etc. shake things up slightly from all of the goons that run straight at you (and they are plentiful). There's a pair of boss fights to further spice things up and they were fun enough to fight if rather unoriginal. Sound is unremarkable, the shooting is alright although the monster sounds are rather laughable and shouldn't scare anyone under the age of 10. Control is a little loose, not enough to cause alot of cheap deaths, but don't be surprised if one or two occur. When you need to dodge out of the way of anything, you'll find that you have to plan your movements because Mr. Unnamed Operative skipped the space marine diet/exercise regimen. Jumping is wonky which really isn't a problem as there isn't really any pesky platforming segments. You just shoot, blast, shoot, blast, rinse, repeat. I would say I got more enjoyment out of Dead Effect in recent times than this. Simplicity in gaming is a beautiful thing and I"m always down try these new school takes on old school gaming. The problem here is that it's so very linear. With no secrets to find, no overly challenging or memorable battles, respsawning monsters that block your progression and such point A to B gameplay, it becomes very mundane very quickly. Throwback games are fun, but there has to be some salt, pepper or touch of seasoning to make sure you don't end up "boring" instead of "old school." That's the biggest problem here. I'll break it down into some pros and cons... Pros -Simple, mostly fun old school shooting -Plenty of monsters to fight -Solid selection of guns and most are fun to use -The way guns gore the monsters is entertaining -Boss fights were decent Cons -No secrets, little variety, very plain, bland levels, etc. -Ho-hum graphics (but good enough for what it is) -Unremarkable sound -Controls slightly wonky -Pretty short -Doesn't encourage much replay even with a survival mode and different difficulties -Almost zero of its own personality as a game Overall, depending on how much you are into first person shooters or not will determine if you need to play this. I'm glad I did but I'm not sure I'll get much past my 6/10 achievements and a normal completion. Most every game I own I play through more than once. For whatever reason, it's a struggle to want to progress on hard with absolutely nothing to find because the game is so bare bones. I'm impressed what a single person was able to develop here and Oleg shows lots of potential for future gaming projects but I don't think he's quite found his whole groove yet. I'm going to have to say this one is a pass unless it pops up for less than $5. Rating: 5.0/10 UPDATE: I did find some glitches on hard. I fell through the first level no less than 2 times near the end right when I was about to finish. I dropped the score and uninstalled the game. Yeah, this one is a definite pass unless you got extra cash sitting around.

For what it is I had loads of fun. Bought it on sale for $0.50 and the 2.5 hour campaign was pretty enjoyable. A decent little shooter at a great price that makes me go out and buy the sequels. Recommended, for this price don't except AAA quality, but just have fun!

Poor shooter. Maps, textures and enemies are crafted sufficiently by this sole developer but the combat fails miserably with lack of sprint option and slow movement in general. It makes shoot and evade tactics impossible; exactly the key elements of the original Doom which this game advertises to emulate. Also the game has the worst head bobbing I have ever found in fps. The boss fights were as usual tedious and annoying and I even didn't retry the last one after mysteriously getting killed. Pity since this developer knows how to use the Unity engine and with some small tweaks this could even have been entertaining for two hours.

    Summary (TL;DR):

Updated 1/28/22 Putrefaction gets a C for effort and a D for execution from me. I honestly thought it was an unremarkable and lacking experience in almost every element I consider important, and in general just never came close to scratching that old-school shooter itch it claims to scratch. It isn't a completely awful game, it's not technically broken or unplayable, and the $1 price tag means you're not risking much. That said though, the cons mentioned below still prevent me from wholeheartedly recommending it. FPS fans who go in with expectations proportionate to the price might be able to eke some entertainment out of Putrefaction, but I think most others will likely be disappointed.

    What Rules:

    - Decent enemy variety rather than a small selection repeatedly reskinned. - Key rebinding and mouse y-axis invert options.

    What Stinks:

    - An almost complete lack of story. While the classic shooters of yesteryear typically skimped on plot, they had compelling gameplay to propel the player forward and keep them interested. Putrefaction unfortunately doesn't provide solid or enjoyable enough gameplay to justify its own lack of narrative. - The environments, level design and overall progression just don't flow very well, aesthetically or logically. The maps don't seem to have any overall theme connecting them, leaving me feeling I was being funneled through linear and seemingly random facility hallways/interiors/caves (This isn't helped one bit by the aforementioned lack of a story). - I both clipped through the map and got stuck in the environment several times. - Combat is the most important area for a FPS to nail (especially one that counts the classics as inspiration), but sadly the combat in Putrefaction is generic, brainless and repetitive, requiring very little actual skill to overcome the oddly-grouped waves of enemies with fairly poor AI. The game's arsenal is just as uninspired as the combat, offering up crudely modeled/skinned weapons that lack punch. Even the rocket launcher felt under-powered.

    My Thoughts:

Putrefaction is described by the developer as being heavily inspired by old-school shooters from 3D Realms and Id Software. While it's true that it is in fact a FPS that has no regenerating health, cover mechanics or other modern contrivances, any similarities between Putrefaction and its inspirations end there.

(Ignore Playtime I Mostly Play Offline) As a fan of gonzo shooters in the vein of Painkiller & Serious Sam and Old school Dos shooters like Doom & Corridor 7, I really enjoyed this game! Loads of enemies, Tons of blood and some particularlly nice explosions. Also if you are looking for a challange Putrefaction has it in spades (level six for instance is fiendishly difficult). Sure there are some technical issues here and there but nothing that made me want to throw my mouse accross the room. and it can be a little rough around the edges but on the whole looks & Plays good. If your after Tactical, Stealthy cobblers go elsewhere, if you want chunky guns, big explosions and Literally Fountains of Gore Putrefaction will definately do the trick 8\10

This game is actually pretty good for it's price, I bought it for around 50 cents or something, expecting a barely working FPS game, when in reality, it's pretty decent. The game is not amazing, of course, and you can totally notice it was made by a single person in Unity, but at the same time, the game FUNCTIONS, it never crashed on me, never had any game breaking bugs (except for an area you can fall down to and doesn't have a death trigger, meaning you have to reload a checkpoint), and the gunplay is basic and a bit unimpactful, but serviceable. The game is basically an arena shooter where you're locked in a room and hordes of monsters spawn, it's alright. The only other thing worth mentioning is that there's a big shift in tone nearing the end of the game (which is around 2 hours long btw), which is not bad, but it's almost completely unexplained since this game lacks story telling during gameplay. TL;DR: The game is not amazing by any means, but for the price you'll get a decent shooter that you can enjoy for a couple of hours.
