Was this a good open world 3rd person game? Yes. Was this a good continuation of original trilogy game? No. After 83 hours, a year and a half and a trilogy of the original Mass Effect, I finally decided to write this review. What most reviewers say is unfortunately true. Andromeda has nothing to do with the original trilogy except for a few audio logs/logs found on the Andromeda ship. The logs themselves won't tell you much except why and how you ended up in another Galaxy, which most people will find out in the first half of the game. HOWEVER, even though this game has nothing to do with the original trilogy, I thoroughly enjoyed this game even after the weaker 15 hour "prologue". After completing the prologue and finally starting the game, I started to finally and properly enjoy the open world in 5 larger maps and one smaller map (which is still quite packed with missions and places to explore). There are a lot of gameplay and options to progress through the game and battles (however, it's better if you additionally download mods that allow you to enjoy the game/battles even more) and I rarely experienced boredom. However, the worst decisions the developers could have made were the cutscenes of boarding both the ship and the ship to the Andromeda main station, etc. (Which took me 2 hours and 38 minutes after completing the game to 100%) Therefore, I would use a mod for this "event". As for the main and secondary characters in the game, I can only say this. From the beginning of the game, when I gradually got to know all the crew members and got to know them through dialogues or missions, I really thought they were all idiots and most of them drank my blood through their stupid and generally dry remarks. Anyway, towards the end of the game. Better to say, for the last 5 hours towards the end of the game, I rather liked them all, and Vetra's transition line really intrigued me so much that I ended up having a "romance" with her. The only one that didn't suit me personally was ``our'' blue fool Palessaria, but that's probably just my personality. In closing, I would like to say that although this game is not like our beloved original Mass Effect trilogy (cough cough MS3) I would still like to say that I thoroughly enjoyed the game and became engrossed in both the story and the exploration of the different worlds that were both accessible by space ship or just by scanner. Overall I would give this game 7/10 BUT IF YOU WANT BETTER EXPERIENCE, PLAY IT WITH MODS!!! Last message: ND1 Nomad is 100% better vehicle than Mako :X

My experience is that its gets really old really quick. There is entirely too much drama and blah blah blah in the game. Unlike ME3 where the drama and teamwork is written well and fun, Andromeda is just boring and after several hours I just wanted to trash it. ME3 has real romance and fun NPC interactions, Andromeda does not! I spent too much time bouncing around in vaults only to come out for too much super long dialogue based missions. For the action, shoot em up junkie this ain't it.

Perhaps the most important part of playing Mass Effect Andromeda (if you do choose to play it) is to go into it with carefully managed expectations. This was a game made not by the flagship BioWare team (they were working on Anthem at the time), but by BioWare Montreal—the team primarily responsible for Mass Effect 3's phenomenal multiplayer component. Going off of that, you can expect really good combat. Andromeda is easily the best a Mass Effect game has ever played, combat-wise. You are far more mobile than ever before thanks to jump-jets, there are more powers to choose from in your build than ever before, and guns feel almost universally exceptional. They even fixed the original trilogy's notoriously awful vehicles by having by far the best feeling, looking, and controlling vehicle in the entire series in the Nomad! In addition to the strong combat, the move to the Frostbite engine (although it caused a severely difficult development, as Frostbite was not intended to be utilized for RPGs) looks absolutely beautiful in comparison to the Unreal Engine 3 which the previous games were built on. Perhaps most stunning about this game's visuals are the lighting and particle effects; the way light glows in space, reflects off of surfaces such as ice, and scatter due to particle effects such as fire and explosions is unequaled by any other game in the series. I would even make the claim that space has never looked better in a video game than it does in Mass Effect Andromeda—no exaggeration! Just check out these examples: https://steamcommunity.com/sharedfiles/filedetails/?id=2514238286 https://steamcommunity.com/sharedfiles/filedetails/?id=2514220577 https://steamcommunity.com/sharedfiles/filedetails/?id=2513100261 Superb, right? To top it off, this game sounds amazing! Sound design is something we don't typically notice much, but Andromeda is one of the best sounding games I've ever played. Gunshots echo beautifully throughout the environment, every weapon has pop, the way biotics distort sounds is really impressive. The deadened sound of space is engulfing. Even the effects used for things like reloads or door switches sound really great. Top-notch sound design, and it really makes a difference in the gameplay. There are some drawbacks to combat, though. BioWare Montreal chose to remove the pause-and-command features from the original trilogy, which is a huge disappointment. I'm sure they chose to play to their strengths—which are real-time—but the tactical aspect of pausing and assessing the situation was a huge feature that made Mass Effect different from every other third-person shooter, and it feels more generic without it. In addition to this, managing your squadmates loadouts and power usage is also gone, further removing the more tactical feel of the original trilogy. Aside from these drawbacks, though, the game really does play wonderfully in combat. Being in the thick of it, causing biotic detonations and hearing the amazing gunfire makes combat a joy. Unfortunately, though, the game's troubled development cycle and ragtag writers room have led to a disjointed, sub par writing effort. One of my favorite things about the Mass Effect series is its worldbuilding and its strong characters. The original trilogy feels so alive because its galaxy feels like a real place with real political squabbling and real conflict of cultures. The Batarians versus the humans, the Krogan versus the Turians and Salarians, etc. And its characters feel so real and lifelike that their conflicts ring true and really affect the way you view them and the norms of the setting. Sadly, this is not the case with Andromeda, which feels incredibly basic, tacky, and uninteresting by comparison. The entire setting feels so generically space opera that I find myself wholly uninterested with any of its lore. This lack of writing quality sadly extends to its characters as well. Although I really liked Drack and Vetra, there were so many crewmates I absolutely detested that I refused to bring them with me in almost any situation. Peebee is little more than an impulsive moron, whose flimsy loner personality feels completely artificial—she feels like a writer tried really hard to give a "character quirk" rather than an actual person; which is what all good characters should feel like! And then you have Liam, who is basically just an obnoxious, impulsive screw-up. Liam is such a stupid idiot that it even seems like most of the rest of the team hates him as much as I do. Perhaps some of his hijinks were meant to endear him to me, I guess? If so, his writers completely failed on that front. I truly wished I had the option to kick him off the crew in-game, as he did nothing but act like a fool and consistently put everyone in terrible, life-threatening situations. And then you have people whose dialogue is just flat-out annoying, even at the best of times: an example being Gil, the mechanic. Go away, Gil. I'm tired of hearing your annoying, nasally voice and try-hard attempts at wit. The entire game is permeated with unbelievably poor dialogue, too. Characters say things that feel awkward and completely unrealistic. Every time I sit down to play this game, I think to myself, "This isn't how people talk! Nobody would say things like this!" None of the writing feels natural or real. The characters feel like video game characters, the world feels like a video game world. And so none of the conflicts or the ideas this game feebly attempts to discuss are interesting at all. They're just busywork; something that's in place because it's a Mass Effect game, and Mass Effect games need to have things like squadmates and aliens. The writing in general is so uninspired that I've never replayed this game—even though I've replayed Mass Effect 3 a dozen times at this point. It's so, so disappointing to see from my all-time favorite video game series. In addition to this, the quest design really leaves a lot to be desired. There are far too many busywork fetch quests here. BioWare Montreal designed these gorgeous, huge, atmospheric environments which feel amazing to look at and fight in, and then chose to populate them with some of the most mundane, uninteresting busywork crap-quests imagineable. Get ready to scan 32 plants, mine 26 rocks, kill 10 beasts, etc. Over and over. Ad nauseam. Because, unfortunately, Mass Effect Andromeda is that kind of game. It's really unfortunate that the poor animations (they are bad, but they're nowhere near the biggest flaw this game has) got so much press at the time of release, because, in general, this game really does look excellent. And its biggest flaw—by far—is how it fails the series' reputation by putting together such a mediocre writing effort. If you're looking for a fun third-person sci-fi shooter with some nice visuals, give Andromeda a shot. That being said, although Mass Effect Andromeda does indeed do some really great things, I still don't think I would recommend it unless you're a very hardcore fan of the series. And even then, it's important to go in with well-managed expectations: Mass Effect Andromeda is certainly not a great game, but, depending on your tastes, it can be an enjoyable experience. Game has been rendered unplayable due to EA turning off Origin and forcing me to update to the EA Play app, which doesn't work for ANY of my EA games through Steam. Well done EA, proving you're useless once again. *Slow Clap*

Man this is a hard one. Ultimately, here's the shortest way I can put this: Is it better than the original trilogy? No. Does it have a lot of flaws, like a needless open world, a weird face problem, and a somewhat bungled premise? Yes. But do I still recommend it? Yeah probably. The new gameplay/gunplay loop is pretty good. Getting to switch your ability loadout on the fly is a ton of fun. And while the story is inconsistent, I was interested in it. And the last mission was pretty solid. The companions were also well done, easily on par with ME1s companions (if you ignore ME2 and 3, which only seems fair). The flaws are serious enough that I probably won't play it again for years, if ever. And if I do, it'll be with serious mods. BUT I don't regret playing it either. I don't know, make sense of that jibberish.

No longer a dumpster fire! Dive right in.

After one of the more humiliating launches in recent memory, I gave Andromeda a wide berth. As of 2021 however, I'm happy to report that in almost 50 hours I haven't encountered a single glitch. The game looks great, runs great, and feels great to play. https://steamcommunity.com/sharedfiles/filedetails/?id=2353904610 Andromeda is far enough removed from the OG Trilogy that you can play it with zero knowledge about the previous titles, and while the writing is nowhere near as compelling and the game overall is far more generic Andromeda would be a decent introduction to the ME universe for any newcomer - and then you can jump into the Legendary Edition when that drops a few months from now. Mass Effect The First hasn't really aged all that well, to be honest, and unless you have an affinity for older games wait until the remaster is available. https://store.steampowered.com/app/1328670/Mass_Effect_Legendary_Edition/ For established fans my recommendation is significantly more lukewarm but still positive. Andromeda is almost a Ubisoft like open world and while this is fantastic for exploration at your leisure, losing the laser focused narratively driven structure from the previous games was not the best decision in my opinion. Not only is Andromeda structurally wildly different, but the writing itself is kind of... OK. It does genuinely feel like fanfic in a lot of ways, rather than a canonical entry by the authors of the world. The bits and pieces of that very Bioware thing is present, but it feels like a re-hash rather than anything new. https://steamcommunity.com/sharedfiles/filedetails/?id=2350430370 Your crew includes a bloodthristy Krogan without much else going on, a clever but somewhat awkward Asari scholar, a very strong biotic human with a difficult personal past, and a reliable and pragmatic Turian. Does this sound familiar to anyone else or is it just me? The quests themselves (yes, think singleplayer MMO kind of structure here) are mostly what you'd expect from the premise and they rarely surprise, though they are all implemented well. The aggressively middle of the road writing is carried by some very satisfying gameplay. Ryder has access to a lot of different powers, weapons, and while crafting is a bit of a pain with some items requiring rare resources you can respec your skills with ease. I settled on a close range shotgun / melee shock trooper kind of build and but there really are a lot of different possibilities and they all feel satisfying. Andromeda is to Mass Effect as Inquistion is to Dragon Age - Bioware has seemingly lost its ability to identify and build upon what made it great and they keep trudging on delivering acceptable, fun, streamlined and risk averse popcorn blockbuster versions of their past magnum opuses. They're not bad, but they sure as shit are a long way from where they used to be.

Was this a good game? Yes. Was this a good Mass Effect game? No. Starting off your choices dont really seem to affect anything beside one or two dialogue changes. Thats if you get a choice. Most mission choices are: Yes or Yes (sarcastic), Their is no Noveria, Feros, Virmire, Geth Dreadnot, Collector base, Rannoch, or Tuchanka. No big choices that really effect the game in anyway. Second your crew and the story is not as well made as any of the other games. If they were to take out most of your squad mates it would not change the story at all. Also it kinda feels like a 8 year old wrote their dialogue then sprinkled in curse words to make it seem like it was directed towards a more adult audience. The villain is pretty bad too. Has you chase a Mcguffin around, The Meridian. Its like The Conduit from ME1, only you don't care about it. The story is mildly interesting, Help inhabitable planets become habitable with ancient technology while stopping the Kett. but no where near as interesting as the OG trilogy. Then not all the species that are suppose to be in Andromeda are in the game. Quarians, my favorite species, are not in this game. Which does not make any sense because, the Quarians have the best reason to be there. The reason anyone is in Andromeda is that the four Citadel Council races AND THE QUARIANS are planning to populate new home worlds in the Andromeda Galaxy. Since this game took part in between ME 2 and ME 3, the Quarians still dont even have a settled world because of the Geth. However, there was supposed to be a Quarian DLC and it was cancelled. I guess the best we will get this the book Mass Effect: Annihilation, Which tells what happens to the Quarian ark. Worth a read, one of the better ME books. Then they changed how species act in general. The Krogan are not that violent and actually understanding. The Krogan diplomat that is such a push over. Then from what i can tell your pilot, a Salarian, has a romantic relationship? I thought Salarians don't feel romantic and just have mating contacts. The Turians are said to be militaristic but then don't act that way at all. One loyalty mission involves helping a turian with her sister and her sister is suspired about violence and killing. Huh? It feels like if someone just read the sparknotes on Mass Effect then made a game on it. However the gameplay and the graphics are great. I thoroughly enjoyed it. But that's not really what makes a mass effect game. Its the characters and your interactions with them. Its the story and the choices you make to get to the end. This game took out everything that made a Mass Effect game a Mass Effect game and replaced it with better than normal gameplay and gorgeous visuals. If you want a good 3rd person shooter, Sure buy it. If you want a good Mass Effect, I would stick to the OG trilogy.

I put this game off for years because I'm a die-hard Mass Effect fan, and after the poor reviews, I wasn't going to let it tarnish my fandom. But my backlog ran thin, Cyberpunk didn't really work out as far as giving me the fix I needed, and...well, here we are, strangely. Enter Mass Effect Andromeda, an unremarkable sequel to an remarkable series. In story and roleplaying mechanics, it falls short of standards set by the original trilogy. The writing quality and tone fluctuate wildly from cringey at worst to genuinely endearing at best. A weak villain fails to ground the central conflict while more interesting themes get relegated to side content. In spite of that, I put in 80+ hours on a single playthrough. Why? Because Andromeda ultimately gets the most important thing right: it remembers to be a video game with a solid gameplay loop. The combat is better than it's ever been, with lots of room to experiment with playstyles. The driving is almost like a navigational puzzle that improves as you acquire Nomad upgrades, the crafting system greatly rewards exploration (though it is not necessary), and the side missions present enough intrigue to string you along from one location to the next. While none of your choices significantly alter the storyline, there's gratification from seeing outposts and characters change in both gameplay and story terms as a direct result of your actions and exploration. This is flavouring more than anything else, but it's the good kind of flavouring because even though it was all an illusion, I felt in those moments that I was having an impact on the game, and that's what counts. Sometimes this might accompany the odd morally grey decision, and other times, it might culminate in a very unexpected boss battle. This isn't a good Mass Effect game, but it is a decent video game. If you're looking for an adventure game fix that involves invigorating combat, exploration, and some fun banter along the way, you could do much worse than Andromeda. You could admittedly do better too, which is why this would never be my first recommendation to anyone, but if you've already played a lot of the other greats, this is a solid port of call.
