Play as a Commander ( RTS ) ; build base, train an army and call down support abilities to help your allies on the ground to gain territory.

Play as an Officer ( FPS ) ; lead your infantry squad into combat and crush your enemies with your agile tactics or brute force. Capture resources for your team, upgrade weapons and equip battlesuits suitable for your combat role.

Eximius provides a multi-role gameplay experience where each player could choose to play a diversely different role and fight not only with brawns but also with their brains. An expert shooter could be outnumbered, ambushed and overwhelmed if caught in a wrong position. While a scheming officer could be assassinated in the right moment at the frontline.

Genuinely good game given a bad rap while the devs struggle with legal battles against a crook of a publisher. Watch this video https://youtu.be/LeybtnvV6io or at least give the DMCA post a read in the discussions before you thumbs down this game. TL;DR Devs weren't paid at all what they should have been by their publisher.

TLDR: You expected to build bases, conquor territory, and destroy enemy bases? No you're actually playing a 6v6 FPS MOBA game After owning this game for half a year now, I feel its really time I give this game an honest lookover. Originally when I purchased this game, the idea of playing as a ground soldier and controlling movements of your entire army sounded like a great idea, and the gifs on the description showcased armored combat with heavy artillery and veichles, made it an instant purchase. The actual game is different... Let me describe the 2 modes, and how they REALLY play RTS Mode: You will NOT play as a Commander and a Soldier at the same time. Let me get this straight. If you want to stop tediously micromanaging troops and tanks to take out a gun and shoot enemies, it's practically the same as abandoning your army to die, and leaving your economy to wither. Therefore, if you choose to play Commander, you will be Commander for the entire game. I seen couple noobs try to play soldier as commander, and none of those matches ever went well. As for the gameplay itself, you will be playing on premade maps, on the same spawns, and will work to build your base and work with your Officers to control points on the map. The typical game flow goes like this: Both Commanders on each will work to tech up as fast as possible, while Officers try to help you by taking (Money, Energy, Victory) points to help the game. You can choose to send AI units out to help the Officers fight for control of the map, and as you level up your Barracks to produce better troops, until eventually you win the game. Usually by draining the enemy of Victory points. During Combat, it is practically required that you micromanage your AI units, especially your tanks and artillery, if you want to win the game at any sort of level. You will need to tell tanks exactly where to deploy turrents, manually assign troops to carrier units and officers, decide where to drop air support and resupply armories from time to time. That being said, you cannot rush the enemy base in a typical multiplayer match. There are 4 turrents that have extremely high health surrounding each base you need to destroy before thinking of assault the command center to eliminate the enemy entirely. By the time you can effectively field an army strong enough to topple the turrents, the game is over or the timer ran out. Theres also the teamwork aspect that isn't talked about much, and working closely with your Officers is extremely important. If you have a team of incompetent new player Officers or AI officers you will earn less resources than the enemy team's Officers who played the game since launch. As such, you will need to coordinate, usually with voice chat, to work with you to build and fight the enemy. There is a very *limited* amount of strats you can do before the game gets tedious playing as a Commander because of this, and eventually it just starts to get stale mindlessly following the same script over and over. This is the RTS mode. FPS Mode: If you don't care for building bases and just want to shoot people, you will be playing as an Officer. First, let me tell this: There is no "choosing your loadout". You need to earn loadout points ingame to get better weapons Let me tell you what the gameflow is like, and what actual abilities and game style you will be playing as: The game will start, and you along with 4 other officers, will start with a level 1 assault rifle, and will immediately rush to capture points on the map. (The 6th person is the commander, and he won't be playing with you). As you save up loadout points, you can then choose what weapons you can use, and your "battlesuit" which gives you more health and abilities you can use. For example, letting you dump rockets on enemies. Sounds good, until you realize that there is a *very specific* way to play, and trying to do anything else out of the ordinary will make you lose firefights. For example, here is how GSF plays: -You will start by shooting scouts and engineers with assault rifles, LMGs, and SMGS. -Axeron starts sending Ironguards (Robots with miniguns), and they end up becoming the majority of the fighting force. -You will need to throw away your SMGs, Rifles, and LMGs to get weapons specifically made to counter Ironguards (Thermal rifles, shotguns with flaming rounds, grenade launchers.). -Axeron saves enough money to buy plasma tanks and deploying turrents, Ironguards are now a minority of the game population. -You will need to throw away your Thermal Rifles, Shotguns with flaming rounds, and Grenade launchers for AT launchers, EMPs, and Anti Equipment lasers. Theres really no freedom for you to camp in the back with a sniper, or rush with an SMG and flashbangs, everyone in the team needs to switch their loadout to counter whatever troops that appear as the game goes on. Not to mention questionable gameplay design by the developers: -If you take damage, the only indicator you get is a slightly blurry red marker on the screen. There is no camera shake or anything like in every single other FPS game. You won't know you're dying until you lost half your health already. Lead Developer of this game said this is intentional, and doesn't want "Call of Duty flinch" -There is no "fluid" movement, you will get stuck on tree branches, light posts, mailboxes, and tables. You cannot vault over obstacles or cover, you will need to walk around it. You cannot climb buildings. There is a very specific path drawn on the map for you, and the Devs actively work to nerf players from climbing on top of various buildings or obstacles. It's a very tedious PVP game that doesn't give player freedom, and as a new player you will be working to learn how the gameflow script works, rather than learning new mechanics to try out and experiment with. And once the match is over, you will restart from the beginning, with the same level 1 base and level 1 weapons again, and fight over and over again. You can't build Foward Ops Bases or expand territory. There is no persistent war effort to contribute to like in Planetside, and matches last 40 minutes on average. I wanted to give the game a chance, but im really sick of seeing this game go for half a year with only PVP events and 0 gameplay changes or updates on my steam home. Would I recommend if you like RTS? No. Play AOE2 instead. Would I Recommend if you like FPS? No. Play Apex or any other Call of Duty instead. The game advertised itself as scratching the wrong itch. Maybe this game would benefit if there was randomly generated maps and territory to conquor, and not this very limited 6v6 game mode, so that players actually have freedom to experiement, but IDK. It's just not fun anymore.

As opposed to the traditional Pro/Con sheet, I will instead opt to explain why you should give Eximius: Seize the Frontline a chance depending on what kind of gamer your are.
FPS Grunt

You Matter - Due to the small team size, you will make an impact as an officer. Whether that's holding the center point against impossible odds as your ai marines fall to the onslaught of mechanical Ironguards or as a cloaked spec ops infiltrating enemies lines to take out an anti-tank emplacement before capping the side point by your lonesome. I was in a game where a combined effort by the GSF officers resulted in a 600 point lead dropping to a 69 point lead.
Solid AI - Although the ai is occasionally plagued with some poor pathfinding and target prioritization, they will melt your shields and hp if you don't take cover. So expect a challenge if you're careless and/or outnumbered.
Serviceable Gunplay - Modern Warfare this game is most certainly not. After finishing the tutorial or playing against the AI, you will notice that although shooting in this game is accurate and responsive, there is no real weight to the guns or bullets. It genuinely feels like you could be firing out of a supersoaker instead of an advanced rifle. If you need Triple A gunplay to enjoy a something, then this game will not be for you.

RTS General

Good RTS - A solid RTS experience with resource management, mico/macro, resource nodes, objective points, etc. If you like COH or Dawn of War, you'll probably like this.
Asymmetric Factions - The GSF are your "standard" military faction with a solid array of infantry backed up by powerful tanks and artillery. If you've ever played Company of Heroes or any other RTS that takes place during or after WWII, then you'll feel at home with the GSF. The Akeron involve a more interesting mix of weak infantry, powerful robots, mobile buildings, and unique utilities like invisibility and shields. Both factions will give the commander and officer distinctly different experiences that provide a significant amount of replay value.
Not enough unit or building Variety The Akeron can only build 4 types of buildings. A power generator, robot fabricator, research lab, and one of two turret types. Considering that the Akeron have the unique ability to actually move buildings (except for the command base) this feels like a massively missed opportunity that I hope the devs will expand upon in the future.

What makes Eximius Unique
As you can tell from the description, what makes Eximius unique is the fact that it artfully blends the solid, but not extraordinary, FPS and RTS elements in equal parts to create a hybrid that is far more than the sum of its parts. RTS players will find it refreshing that painfully microed units can now be managed by competent, human players. Hearing the cries of an officer holding out against overwhelming odds turn into shouts of joy when you launch an artillery strike against the APC that was suppressing them adds a human element that I've never experienced in my hundreds of hours in Total War. As an FPS player, you will notice that you are suddenly far more important than one of the 64 grunts fighting on a massive battlefield. You are an officer and both your words and actions will have tangible consequences. You and your squad's suicidal charge into the center of the map distracted the enemy for long enough for your Commander to reinforce an injured officer with a fresh batch of soldiers. The recon you relayed to your Commander provided them with information that they could have never assessed from a top-down view which then causes them to reposition a turret's location. Of course, the game I describe above is more often than not only achievable when you have a team with mics or when you play with friends. However, I have found that a solid amount of this small community uses mics and so far they have all been really nice and inviting. There is an official Discord that I HIGHLY recommend joining so you can coordinate and plan with your team as the game's VC could be better. Ultimately, this hybrid is unique in the current landscape of games and although it could benefit from heavy quality-of-life refining and a sale to boost player count, it is a truly exciting game that deserves a spot on most player's library.

Not Recommended. This game has no matchmaking ability - Supposedly going to be added later but it will be too late The current player base is abysmal. Cannot even find a lobby anymore as of this review. You will have seen all the maps from both sides within a day at best. After that, your stuck trying to 'grind' XP to rank up so you can get profile / skin cosmetics. Replayability is minimal and the PVE aspect of the game is an extreme dud. - 5 PVE / PVP Skirmish maps - 3 PVE Scenario maps - Extremely unresponsive AI units makes RTS aspect frustrating and unrewarding - FPS Combat is sluggish and results in standard rush / kill or die / repeat style of gameplay - Very small maps - Limited building / unit options for RTS aspect - Limited FPS Weapons / abilities variation - Generic ticket system / strategic point system that devolves the game into bleeding the enemies of tickets - Tickets bleed extremely fast even at the highest setting resulting in matches that are pretty short - Attacking bases is pretty much pointless, by the time your anywhere near that stage the game will be over and they have the standard "super base defence and magic base shields" to prevent that kind of victory The lack of anyone playing after a week should be the biggest red flag. This game simply has nothing to keep people playing.

Pretty much the only RTS/FPS hybrid out there, existing with both styles in balance without either sacrificing too much. Definitely enjoyable with a lot of depth, but largely dead at this point. Bring friends. Absolutely worth the asking price. The bots are enough of a challenge to keep things engaging as a solo player.

This is tough game to comment. It is step forward compared to Savage, Savage Resurrection, Nuclear Dawn, and Natural Selection. I am great fan of RTS and FPS hybrids, since they bring interesting non linear games where RTS players are full-busy (need to maintain at most 5-6 parallel actions), while FPS players enjoy ever changing field of new buildings, walls, trenches. Eximius brings in the modern battlefield with tanks and infantry commanders. Tanks cant be driven (they are the RTS players right to fun, like in company of heroes). The FPS players fun is their suits. The game concept is honestly fun, the in-game feeling is alright, controls work well and the graphics is quite good. The game supports "normal" victory points game type, and solo-coop survival modes So what is the problem? The problem is player base. These kind of games depend on the player count. This is the reason why I cant recommend the game. The reason why the game is on positive review side for me, it is because of the BOTs. The game is playable with bots, and RTS players are not limited to only human players, they can create normal RTS units and either control them directly, or attach them to FPS player. BOTs know and control well every role (RTS, or FPS). Well FPS bots are, well bots, you have to guide them on their actions. For me the BOTs are the revolution in this game type, all the others games do not support bot, and without bots RTS role is crap (it is quite frustrating when you are RTS player and have no resources, or your super op commanders are mining stone T.T. Imagine playing RTS games and your OP infantry unit is uncontrollable, and dies every 3 seconds :D, well at least they dont cost resources to resurrect). The balance in this game is not perfect, the balance can only be perfected after longs hours of gameplay (like age of empires II, or starcraft). The balance is focused on longer fights (no one taps :D, destructibles have a lot of HP, bases cannot be rushed). The devs implemented different anti-snowball mechanics, so players can always turn the game around. I am not sure if this game will survive, but you can still experience it offline and have fun, or join the discord on some public events. I am honestly a bit sad, since I really wanted this game to bloom, but at least it is a complete game.

Great game crushed by it's lack of a player base. Don't buy this game if you're looking to play with other people, most of your games will be full of bots. Otherwise, grab some homies and have some fun.

For an Early Access, this game really stands out and I believe it's got amazing and great potential. Played several Team Skirmish battles right after the new update and I got blown away how good and smart the AI is. They adapt every time the player alters his/her strategies. I really recommend this game for anyone who loves FPS and RTS style games, best of both worlds meeting together on the battlefield. * If you have an experienced tactical mindset, your role as the 'Commander' would be perfect for you. * If you just love to shoot the enemy all up and you're very familiar with 'Hardpoint Domination' (CoD game type) or the 'Battlefield' system, you can take the role of a 'Squad Officer', which then the commander can assign AI controlled marines & medics to follow and guard you along the way. I keep a close eye on this masterpiece and hope in the near future we get more variety in structures to build & infantry & vehicles to command. For me a 4 out of 5.

Bit of backstory, I came from Nuclear Dawn to look for a successor of the game. Ended up getting into Eximius around 2019 with the winter tournament, from then on out became an active part in the community.
Personal experience
For me, the game scratches the itch that I had with RTS/FPS side of things, first few games had me totally overwhelmed in what happened as an officer. Artillery raining down, robot armies marching in and all the different battle suits and abilities were an amazing experience. Although the initial awe has faded, the experiences are still amazing. Just charging with a squad of soldiers to the front while your commander supports with an artillery barrage and a tank driving alongside. Or as commander supporting your troops and just seeing the plan come together and crushing the enemy's opposition in a nice pincer movement.
FPS side of things
Extensive but a bit clunky, alot of diversity in equipment and weapons to use. A lot of possible kit combinations make it possible to respond to diverse threats. For example, dealing with an enemy vehicle can be done with a rocket launcher, laser, EMP grenades, rail rifle and more, with infantry it has even more options. Personal recommendation would be the bio injector for GSF, it allows to heal yourself while also gaining extra movement speed for a short duration.
Commander side of things
While I am more of an FPS player, I do also enjoy my strategy games (which I honestly pretty much suck at). For me commanding is kind of a guilty pleasure, doing cheeky strategies which involve copious amounts of marines and the philosophy if people cannot kill your units faster than you can produce you win. Commanding the base works pretty well, I would compare it to ND but not directly connected, both the factions have different mechanics which they build with. That leads to different playstyles, but even within the factions you have 'generals' which each have their own specialization (infantry, armor, building/stealth) with each specializing in their respective category while still retaining most of the standard line-up. Capturing resource points across the map to fund your ever-growing military production and supporting your officers in the field with barrages of artillery fire, tanks, EMP strikes and much more.
Community
It has an active community where folks are coming together to play games, scrim with each other and try to survive the hectic that is brutal game difficulty where the enemy throws whatever it can at you. Also, very active in guiding people through the game on how to be a commander and what you can do as an FPS player to support the Commander and teammates. Some tournaments were hosted before which a few were open for everyone (as a team) and some which were Malaysian only. I played during the Winter tournament of 2019 which was quite a blast even though our team was a ragtag bunch of people from the Discord server.
Game-modes
In this game there are several game modes, the mainstay of the game would be the Skirmish/PvP game mode where you have 5 vs 5 (one commander each side) were they go head-to-head to capture victory points across the map and to hold those which drains the enemy tickets. At the same fighting over resource points so that the commander can field a larger army and secure the victory points to win the game. If the offline variant is played it is the player as commander or officer (AI will take commander role if not taken) and it goes against bots. There are also co-op modes which involve wave defense, Cargo transport, securing intel and more with each their own mechanic. Personal favorite is the wave defense where you defend a cannon for 15 minutes and in the map, you have 3 SAM sites you need to defend from the enemies spawning in waves. If those go down the enemies get more reinforcements and the fights gets harder.
The not so nice stuff
So, this game is not perfect, its rough in places with quality-of-life features (which are on the Dev list to do but in the current version of the game not there) like no shift queuing orders, panning speed of the camera not being adjustable, no customizable hotkeys for Commanders (or standard grid layout). On the FPS side of things, it would be clunky grenade throwing, some battle suit abilities that are a bit finicky to get used to and feels a bit counterintuitive. And for newer players there is an initial learning difficulty due to all the combinations of equipment, commanding possibilities which while it is positive to have so many different options. It is also difficult for newer players.
To wrap it up
Would totally recommend it to people coming from Nuclear Dawn, or for people who really like the FPS/RTS hybrid genre. For folks who are new to this genre, I give a positive recommendation with a but. The but being that so far, the game is not fully polished and a bit clunky [u]but[u] if you can live with that it’s a very nice game. Especially with the very active developer and community, with the developer listening to the feedback the community gives and adding wanted features to patches they make.
