TLDR: EVERSPACE is good, but it feels incomplete. I am ALWAYS hunting for the next Freelancer. Easy to grasp, hard to master combat, a variance of enemy AI personalities, a feel good loot system and rewarding extra caricular activities such as mining, trading and piracy. EVERSPACE provides just enough in each catagory that it's an acceptable one night stand while I wait for my future Freelancer wife. It definitely feels like half a game. If EVERSPACE kept the same combat and crafting systems, but put it into a densely pobulated galaxy with a RPG element this would be my favorite game on Steam hands down. This game really doesn't have a story arc. It is literally acting out the same action in a slightly different way each play through. It's enough of a change each time that if you are only about the gameplay you won't miss it, but I really want the Dev to step up and make this game great. Pirate, Miner, Merchant, Spy, Courier, Bodyguard, Scavenger, and Soldier are just some of the things you could be in this game, but never wil be. FREELANCER WHY DID YOU MAKE ME THIS WAY?

[Update Jan 2019: just got an Oculus Rift, and playing this game in VR is AMAZING. You need to be good with blind keyboard/mouse use, since you still need to control the game and use menus that way, but visually it is spectacular - and really puts things into scale. The asteroids and wreckage are HUUUUUUGE now!] I recommend this game, but it's a guarded recommendation, because while I loved it, it's definitely not for everyone. The key thing to point out is that Everspace is a Rogue-Lite set in space...it is not a Space Game. If you're looking for in-depth, balanced, and challenging tactical dogfighting or fleet combat, this game is not for you. If you're looking for endless exploration and discovery, this game is not for you either. To enjoy Everspace, you need to be able to enjoy repeatedly grinding through the same few basic encounters you'll experience over and over and over, while combing through the constantly repeating wreckage and asteroid fields for resources, hoping that this run you'll earn enough credits and maybe find a blueprint or two that will make your next run get a little bit closer to the end...because in this run, you just encountered a disgustingly overpowered enemy that you cannot defeat. You're going to die, and start over again. And again. And again. But every time, you're a little bit stronger, and you've maybe got new weapon and item options to experiment with. And that second piece is the key - Everspace is not balanced. Some weapons, once you finally get them, are obscenely overpowered
(and I don't just mean the Ancient Weapon. Shock Rifle, Flak Cannon 5-5, and others are just as OP)
. Some purchased upgrades to your pilot or your ship can have a huge impact on your survivability. Enemies are not intelligent, so once you find a trick to defeating them cheap and easy, they will never find a way to defeat you again. And you'll progress deeper towards your goal. Until you reach a new enemy, and you have to figure out the trick to it...and probably dying a few times along the way. And starting over. And over. And over. But in a weird way, that's what this game really offers. The satisfaction that comes from getting past those hurdles, of finally destroying your first Okkar Corvette...your first Outlaw Drone Carrier...your first Frigate, or Guardian of the Ruins, or finally securing those oh-so-tempting resources from a black hole, makes all that frustration worth it. And the setting is truly amazing, with each battle set against the backdrop of some beautifully designed planetary systems, that have enough components it takes a long time before you start noticing repeats. I've taken more screenshots of this game than any other I've ever played, because it just looks that damned good. And with a unique "action freeze" option to take perfect screenshots, you can get some unbelievable moments captured. Even if some of it doesn't actually make sense - I'm not an astrophysicist, but I don't think a moon can have rings, nor do I think a black hole can have a stable orbit around a planet - it's still amazing to look at. But you don't really get to explore - there's no landing on planets, or even getting closer to them. It's a sightseeing tour - but a beautiful one. So if you're okay with the idea of incremental success in a casual setting, and not needing in-depth exploration or cunning enemies for challenging combat, then Everspace is definitely worth the B-level price tag.

I see some negative reviews on this game from people that have played it for less than 10 hours and all I can say is that I totally relate to what you're feeling. After about 6-7 hours I was ready to throw the towel in and write it off as a bad game too.. The game was frustrating, I kept dying, I couldn't save enough money for new ships, the ships I did pilot felt like paper, and those damn Okkar raids are absolutely unbeatable..... this sucked!! Then things started to click... you're not supposed to try and beat an Okkar raid, they are a section timer that is supposed to push you forward. You're not supposed to tank with a light ship, you need to play smarter... Next thing I know I unlocked the Gunship and boom, the game just got a hell of a lot more fun. After that you get a feel for what weapons and gizmos work best on each ship and all of a sudden you have a very fun game that keeps things uncomplicated yet quite engaging with beautiful visuals and plenty of replayability. TLDR: this game is quite fun but you really need to get past the first 6-8 hours to truly enjoy it. You may feel frustrated, you may hate dying, but stick with it and you will be rewarded. And if you pay attention to the story, the fact that you keep dying is nicely accounted for as well, so there's that

Everspace grows on you. In true roguelike fashion, you find yourself swiftly dying and repeating the first few sectors, a process made slightly more bearable through the expenditure of cash gathered in the previous run. However, once more of the core gameplay has revealed itself, the game comes into it's own with a surprising amount of flexibility in playstyle, enhanced by the discovery of upgrades which can radically alter your decision making process. Regions with certain environmental features can be beneficial, irritating, or outright dangerous depending on your ship configuration. The core of the game is combat; you'll frequently find yourself outmatched, ambushed, or caught between the pressures of a relentless enemy and the need to avoid some natural hazard. The good news is that just about any situation can be overcome, aided by an entertaining flight model that should make even a relative novice feel like a pro once they get to zipping around one of the many asteroid fields that dot the environment. These asteroid fields aren't just showy backdrops; getting entangled at close range in open space will quickly see even the toughest ship torn apart in seconds, forcing you to pick and choose both your fights and the terrain carefully. The enemies themselves vary, with two main factions making up the bulk of the encounters with enough difference between them that things don't get too same-y. There's little to say about the story; what's more surprising is that there is one in a game like this. It's serviceable, and does the job of providing a coherent reason as to why you keep respawning, but don't expect an emotional investment. On completion of a full run, the game also gives a reason to keep playing. It's relatively flimsy as a plot point, but if you're hooked on the core gameplay, it provides a welcome justification for you to keep flying. Ultimately, if you're looking for fun space combat, Everspace has you covered. It has sufficient depth to keep you playing, and provides plenty of scenarios for you to practice your fanciest flying. You can pick it up and start playing after the minimal introduction given, and the nature of the game never forces it to overstay its welcome. Well recommended.

Just throwing my thumbs up on the pile. If you like rogue-lites with some "legacy" progression, and if you like space fighters with a bit of quick exploration, and if you want to get sucked in for many hours, I say it's worth buying and playing. The price seems fair for the amount of gameplay you'd need to 100% it, though I did get it on sale. I thought that the way the story tried to explain the repeated gameplay-loop (die, restart) was pretty clever, overall, but this is not really an extremely story-rich game. (Here's some further info about the story.) [At time of writing] Most of the negative reviews that offer any justification for a thumbs-down can be lumped into a couple different groups. For my part, I find very few of them to be especially compelling reasons for a negative review -- though some are valid points that might lead you to not buy the game. (1) "Too arcade-y for me" -- which, I suppose, means something like: "I prefer space sims where you have to surgically and strategically dismantle capital ships one system at a time, and Everspace didn't have that." Which is true: capital ships have some shields and/or defenders, but you're basically depleting shields and then depleting hull. Same goes for dogfights -- and it's mostly dogfights. So, take note: if you want a more strategic flightsim, you probably won't like this. Simple as that. (2) "It's repetitive and you die a lot" -- yeah, that's a rogue-lite, as advertised. (3) "You lose all your stuff when you die, so frustrating" -- correct again, this is a rogue-lite. Although you don't lose EVERYTHING, exactly, you lose specific pieces of equipment but keep "Perks" that stick to your pilot and to your ship. There's a detailed wiki about perks -- a quick glance will indicate the sheer number of perks. (Note: when the wiki discusses $$, it's talking about credits you earn in-game, not real money.) (4) "It doesn't boot correctly" -- I can't help you there, but check the specs and the discussion boards before buying. (5) "There's no support for my $X00 HOTAS joystick; so lame" -- yeah, HOTAS support is limited & tricky, and this is well-documented at this point, so hopefully these reviews start to dry up (on the assumption that people spend 2 minutes researching games before they buy them). (6) "Feels like a mobile game" -- I honestly have no idea what this means. Try using your big-person words. (7) "OMG the Cockpit/UI is so bad and you're like in the cockpit the whole time" -- Well, it's a space-fighter, so I don't fully understand the complaint about being in the cockpit all the time. (Like, people wanted to get out of the ship and run around or something??). But there are 3 viewpoints to choose from. I always played without the cockpit showing, but a HUD around the edges. I found the UI pretty intuitive and unobjectionable. There has also been a recent patch to tweak the UI. (8) "I just didn't like it; I wanted something more like <other game>" -- fair enough, I guess? For the record, this isn't Freelancer. Really, it's not. No, it's not Freelancer 2, either. It's not Freespace, it's not Freespace and Privateer, and it's not Privateer and Freelancer. Nor is it marketed as any of those things. (Also, controls are nowhere near as cataclysmic as that last link makes them sound -- could the reviews really be this good overall if the game were literally unplayable?) Still interested but not quite sure if it's for you? Everspace boasts a nice community of streamers: there might be a broadcast here on Steam, or on Twitch -- watch for a while and see what you think. Prefer reading to watching? Duhforce has put together a basic gameplay guide whose first few sections give a nice overview. (Don't read too far if you want to be surprised later on.) Poke around the discussion boards, too -- someone may have asked your question(s) already -- and the wiki. EDIT: Since this review is getting some visibility, I feel I should add: I did not play the game using any VR setup, so I can't say anything about that, but READ THIS. I used an XBOX 360 controller and found it very intuitive, but if you use mouse+keyboard you'll probably want to customize your controls. Also: yes, the Encounters DLC helps fill out the game a bit and is worth it. (Note that no DLC is refundable on Steam, don't blame the devs for that.) EDIT 2+3+4+5+6: I added links to a few relevant things inside the review.

I have to admit I didn't pay enough attention to what this game was when I bought it. I figured this would be a sprawling single player game, but its actually an arcade rogue-like. You play as far as you can until you die. Spend your credits from each run on permanent upgrades and try again. And again. And again... so on. Some games fulfill different things for me, and for me, Everspace fills the "I'd like to play something for 15 minutes and then walk away" category. It's not what I was going for when I bought it, but it's a welcomed addition to my life currently.

If you like Faster than Light, but want to do a little dogfighting instead of ship management, then you'll like this game. If you got confused & thought this was another spaceship trade/fight/expand/conquer type of game, you made a wrong turn. For those of you who don't know what I'm talking about, this game is like the old Bill Murry movie "Groundhog Day" where everytime you die, you start over, but with a little more knowledge & stuff to work with. Die enough times, and you stop sucking at the game. Die even more, and you might finish it. It's a very niche sort of game. Either the Groundhog Day thing appeals to you, or it doesn't. Make your purchase accoringly.

It's basically Edge of Tomorrow: The Videogame. Get to stage 2, die, upgrade ship, get to stage 3 die, upgrade ship, get to stage 4 die. Looks gorgeous and exploration is rewarded. Combat is fun but more variety on enemies would be nice. Also reminds me of Colony Wars if anyone is that old.

I gotta start this review out with -DON'T buy this game without the DLC.- I recommend this game as a very neat Roguelite, but the vanilla game is WAY too empty without the DLC. TBH, this game is pretty hard to review without the DLC, so I'm just going to leave this review here as-is.
