A very atmospheric title that sadly, ends a bit abruptly, feeling like it ended early and leaving the player feeling like they still don't know what happened (despite an end-game monologue of the main character talking about how she "finally gets it now"). Still, it's better to leave the player wishing they had more than overstaying your welcome and it does a great job of building apprehension. It's short but it's also cheap so check it out. If you've played the other games by Chilla's Art, this entry has gameplay similar to their titles like Convenience Store, Stigmatized Property and Okaeri, instead of the Hide-and-Seek type gameplay of Onryo, Yuki Ona or Aka Monto. If you liked the former, you'll like this. If you prefer the latter, ehhhhhhh.

    This is the fourth game I’ve played by Chilla’s Art and so far, my favorite. I can sing the usual praises; fantastically unsettling atmosphere, excellent sound design and music, gorgeous aesthetic, etc. Bizarre NPCs with their realistic image-mapped faces and wholly unrealistic Gumby limbs, complete with totally off-kilter personalities that serve to either scare you or make you laugh. Also, it freaked me out. I don’t know what it is about these games that are able to affect me so easily when horror games never do, but there is always this general sense of dread and unease that gets deep under my skin. It’s well-crafted. What sets it apart from their other work, for me, is the story. Your character is working with the police to locate missing children who are victims of bullying. You can travel between areas to speak with the children’s families and investigate their living spaces for clues that hint to where they may have gone. It’s more in-depth than Chilla’s other games and extremely engaging for an hour long experience. I honestly wish it were much longer, although I appreciate a short but gripping experience. Can’t recommend this enough.

    I really enjoyed this game. The story is kind of sad, but the game itself is very good. Very atmospheric and creepy, with clues that are easy enough to figure out with a little thought. I think it's a neat technique that they used by placing actual photorealistic pictures for the character's faces. Also, "I'm not moving until you bring me a cold one." Summary: Great, fun game. Recommended for horror fans, those who like solving mysteries, and anyone looking to kill about an hour of time.

    An ok-like walking simulator if you consider the relation to price, playing time and achievement yield. That's all there is to say. Horror score: 0 [x] You won't even scare kids with that 1 [] boring 2 [] i fear no ghosts 3 [] horror? realy? 4 [] you scare kids with that 5 [] what was that sound? 6 [] where is the next closet? 7 [] scary like hell 8 [] another corner?! 9 [] let me out of here! 10 [] i don't play this game!

    I enjoyed this. Unlike Chilla's other games, this is not a straight horror. As it says in the description, it's not a horror game, but rather "a horror-themed adventure game". What this means is there's not really any scares at all, there's definitely a few instances of unsettling creepiness, before a more direct horror experience at the end which did give me a chill or two. In a compact running time, the game spins an intriguing tale about missing children and makes you suspect everyone you meet as being responsible. The ending is a bit of a surprise but I felt was appropriate, given the melancholic nature of the story. Recommended.

    * Story of the investigation with the police to find the whereabouts of the missing children. There's nothing particularly scary about it, but the dark atmosphere gives it a spooky feel. Running time is not long, so it's good to enjoy it lightly. Help find missing children!
Curator page here--> DaRevieweD #67 <-- New review every Sunday
Chilla's Art is probably making another horror gem as I'm writing this but... Yeah, no doubt I will be getting to them all at some point! My very first title was The Convenience Store (TCS) and that's probably the mid-point of their portfolio. The duo used to create really niche titles in 2018 with somewhat divided following that although had horror elements, were unmemorable (I've never played so it's an overgeneralization for sure). It was only with the shift in focus to more J-horror style, with spooky tales derived from folklore of their culture that they found their groove! Missing Children (MC) comes after Onryo a blend of Fatal Frame/Dreadout spirit photography exorcism that just turned me off and TCS which really ruined 24/7 establishments for me. I'm just putting the order out there- because even though they're all standalone bite-sized shockers, they reuse similar assets, engines and whatnot. So, it's important to get a sense of chronology in terms of the technical. What was particularly revitalizing is that MC fixes all the unpolished, scathingly slo-mo aspects that made TCS so meh (but it's still good, narrative and atmosphere-wise). More on that after we find these kids~
"Trouble in Parents' Eyes."
https://steamcommunity.com/sharedfiles/filedetails/?id=2331172949 The Gist: Ever since her son's passing, Sato's been wracked with guilt. To atone for it, she has since then offered emotional support to students in schools so that no one would ever feel alone again. The police force enlists her aid because of her new reputation and past experience in the search for three teens who ran away from home. She accepts though she can't help fear that it will be a repeat of her son's circumstance...
! How long has it been since you checked them?

[+] PROS;
(a) They Grow Up So Fast~ The gameplay is a staple of Chilla's Art games where you walk/run and talk to NPCs. This time however, marks the first that an inventory system is introduced. Previously you could only pick one at a time (thing currently held swapped for the new). Now you can shove as many items, large and small in your pockets- cycle through them with the middle mouse button! Something quite different as well is the idea of a semi-open world as usually their horror titles revolve around a singular location or something similar. Here you get to fast travel between the neighborhoods of the three missing children, the police station and a yet undisclosed area~ Don't forget there are "side-quests" as well that will pop up (really fetch quests), of which completing them nabs you a different colored paper pinwheel...? What's that for!!? And of course there are two endings to keep you occupied. Thanks to a manual save system at the police station, you do not have to restart your whole run for the other outcome!! (b) A Place of Sorrow! The moment you are summoned to the police, the uneasy feeling begins... It could be the encroaching darkness in the surrounding alleys contrasted with the brightly lit station but I never felt safe. Then the tension escalates from there. Each house is equally off and the family members there to greet/shoo you only reeks further of ulterior motives. For instance, Mizuki's mom is awfully reluctant to let anyone in her house despite the extenuating situation. The scares are genuinely hair-raising and don't rely on cheap jumpy boos! There were sudden shocks but it was more of a delayed realization on my part; it could be a character appearing out of the blue where seconds ago there weren't any... I d-don't think(?). The dread is unrelenting owing it to indistinguishable, but nonetheless frightening sound effects. Think of The Grudge for one of the houses~ (c) Second Chances? Story is one of a parent coming to terms with loss and therefore with grief. But to a greater extent, it's also about the children's plights, motivations and what led them to flee home. Carrying with it varying representations of dysfunctional families and yet all leading to the same unfortunate end point. There isn't much in the way of personalities in these games- if I had to pick one, the strongest character would be Sato because of the way she handles herself and surely not without her fair share of breakdowns. Even in the bad ending, she fared surprisingly well. What I wouldn't give to be like her~ (d) D-dead in A Ditch?! SCARY: One, at the forefront of your lizard brain- you'll be picturing the worst of the worst of what could have already befell the missing kids. Saving Grace recently did this too but that was hella fun more than anything! But here, omg I'm gonna be so protective and overbearing of my future children, aren't I!!? Two, more than anything the pain of loss is devastating. And so to have even the remote chance of it happening again, could very well set things into motion dire consequences never before imagined. Three, there's this recurring theme throughout of whether the strange occurrences are due to actual ghosts or
a mental disorder
. For Sato, who's been through so much, it's just as plausible! Lastly, however, the events during the game has more to do with the occult as it would have you think! Making offerings to the Jizo statues, the centrality of paper pinwheels which have ties to overturning luck and spirituality! Some things are beyond our comprehension but it doesn't mean they're baloney!!
[-] CONS;
https://steamcommunity.com/sharedfiles/filedetails/?id=2387082814 (i) Pranked on... The inventory was definitely a welcome addition. But it brings to mind an issue concerning ease of navigation. Instead of having to hear the tones of cycling through the entire inventory- I'd rather just have it shift between items I do possess and not have to go over the empty slots too. Another way would be to limit the number of items I can carry because there's only so many to pick up anyway! There is one awkward instance where after I arrived at Akiko's house, I didn't knock on the front door and straight away explored the backyard to find an elderly woman lurking around. I didn't interact with her instead I knocked on the door and Sato remarks "maybe there's someone around". Wouldn't it be better to just have her mysteriously turn up after I examined the door?
"Not Grieving Up."
https://steamcommunity.com/sharedfiles/filedetails/?id=2331175868 MC induces the unyielding pessimism that comes with trying to find missing people. Also soul-searching for Chilla’s Art; unafraid to experiment and iron out the creases that made its predecessor bland. The atmosphere oozes of the lost cause outcomes typically met by the search parties. Its characters are shady and harboring secrets as always, further intensifying the never settling discomfort. The ordeal's cause again attributed to the blurry distinction of either human ugliness or supernatural malevolence! It goes without saying, the inclusion of a proper inventory, save system and fast travel smoothens the interface significantly! Even though it's offset by the spacious inventory which makes fumbling for the right item more hassling than it should be. All in all, it seems that Chilla's Art is becoming more adaptable to the player experience while never failing to tense you up with a bone-chilling and at times too uncanny horror story! It seems there is no stopping them with over 18 titles in 3 years, the latest being Teke-Teke and another soon-to-be The Caregiver.
9/10
Chilla's Art still slaying; next review will be on "The Ghost Train"

    Pay no attention to my game time, I left the game running all day by accident. It's really around a couple of hours long. After playing the Convenience Store, I was super intrigued to play this game. Upon finishing, I can say I'm a fan of Chilla's Art games. These bite sized horror games are cheap, but have a wonderful contained story and aesthetic. Pros: -That low poly VHS horror vibe is here and I love it. Characters have kind of a photo mapped to their face like an original Xbox game and I enjoy it so much. -There's some moments that are humorous, creepy, bizarre, and all in the best ways. Horror elements are really atmospheric and everything just feels...off, but in the creepy way and not in a something's wrong with the game kind of way. There's other elements that are nightmarish, but that's a whole other thing. This game gets weird and if you're a bit open to that, you should definitely try this. -The story is pretty easy to pick up on and interesting enough to keep me following it, which says a lot. I think there's some small pieces here and there I maybe didn't connect at first, but overall I was invested in it. Cons - I mean...MAYBE that it's only a couple of hours long? You can't really fault it for the price though. I'm just trying to be critical here and there's not much I don't like. I'd just say if you're not into weird indie horror, this game isn't for you. If you're not sure, it's super inexpensive so just try it out. If you end up liking it, I can recommend The Convenience Store for sure as another one to dive into.
