I fired up the game one last time to verify some issues I had before posting this review...after a game update, my mouse movement is so jittery, I could hardly click to exit the game. The first time I started, I went to the options menu, clicked "yes" to subtitles, and it crashed. What a start. Did you like the original (OLD original) Xcom? Would you like it re-skinned, with a clunky interface, and little explanation of game mechanics? If so, this is the game for you. The tutorial literally says the game consists of three main areas: Geoscape, Tactical Missions, and Base Management, and that's about it. Even the air combat doesn't bother to pull up a fake radar screen...planes and alien icons "pew pew" at each other on the Geoscape. There were a few new mechanics I discovered: for example, when a soldier got shot several times, he collapsed in a heap, but the message said he was "unconscious", and the aliens kept shooting and injuring him. I was able to stabilize him with a medikit, and he survived to fight again. I assume the aliens could have killed him, but he was already at 0 HP, so I don't know for sure: the game didn't explain the mechanics. Perhaps the original also had the same, clunky interface, but after playing modern versions (even smaller budget things like Xenonauts), you realize what a time waste UFO2 is. You can't right-click to equip/unequip gear on your troops, you click and drag each piece. You can't select "snap shot" and then click on the target a few times; instead, you click on the weapon icon, then on the target, then select the type of shot you want. Then, to shoot again, you do the whole process over again, following each individual bullet (even in a burst) all the way to its destination. Want to know which weapon to equip on a guy? Sorry, you can't hover the cursor over the weapon to get a pop-up box with the stats. Instead, you'll need to exit out of the personnel equipping screen, go to the UFOpedia, and look up the details there. I knew, from playing previous Xcom games, that building more workshops would let me build things faster (the UFOpedia didn't mention this). That may sound obvious, except the game also lets you build "detection stations" in your base. Some Xcom games let you build multiple radars to increase detection range, others don't. This one doesn't say, and doesn't show the detection range (not that I saw, at least), so who knows? I fully appreciate the desire for an old-school Xcom-type game, and I was tempted to try and plow through this one, despite the flaws, but it's just not worth it. Wait for Xenonauts 2, see if fan mods later on streamline things, but don't bother with UFO2 in its current form.

No customization, no quality of life improvements over the 2009 version, just lazy and sloppy. Dev gets butthurt about criticism, deletes posts that raise issues. Unprofessional!

Very good strategic game about alien invasion. It has all the parts to attract players for long hours - nice graphics, many weapons/equipment/research topics, and of course, various enemies to fight with. Highly recommended for anyone who misses old good X-COM games.

I played the hell out of UFO: Extraterrestrials Gold. This? This has far fewer options for actual tactical play. Not only are you restricted into manufacturing the human weapons only (Hell, you can't even make grenades for the most part) but there are no heavy weapons or pistols to speak of, an option that was, YES, in the FIRST UFO: ET. There are a lot of design choices that make zero sense, including some of the jankiness that was a holdover from the first game. It's clunky, there's not so much a difficulty 'curve' than a difficulty 'wall' sometimes (If you build too quickly, aliens will take over your bases and turn them into THEIR bases), and the base menu has no other size option besides BOX. I waited almost a DECADE for this game. That wait was sure as hell not worth it. Dammit, Chaos Concept. You dropped the ball HARD on this one. You did NOT learn the lessons brought forth from the previous game, and even bringing on former mod-makers as staff was unable to fix those. Off the top of my head: - Random crashes that don't pop up an error message - Random frame dragging (Where it drops to 0 frames for about a half-second) - The weird sizing choice in the base (Why on Earth is it 800x600?! 1920x1080 would have been fine!) - Loss of variety of weapon choices (Pistol, Rifle, Heavy. That's how it went before, and you COULD have expanded on that) - How armour works. Yeah, i can get that we have good equipment, but AP Ammo isn't supposed to be only able to do 10 damage a hit against the earliest enemies. See "but the damage was absorbed." - AI taking their turn has soft-locked the game MULTIPLE TIMES.

I would like to recommend it but I cannot. It is frustrating. Sometimes very. And it is buggy. Let me explain details: Frustrating: 1. Damage roulette. From 0 to N. 5N if critical. Mostly 0 on a hard level for some aliens. 2. No settings to change video settings, game speed etc. Practically. no settings. 3. You are stack with basic weapon for very long time. 500 missions, still the same weapon with upgraded ammunition. Very frustrating: 1. Solder development. Tundra armor. 60 strength requirement. My solders has 50-55 (for mortar). My solders need another 500 expo for a levelling, each. About 50 missions. 2. Solder development, again. Why cannot I hire a captain? 3. Explosions are one level. If grenade, mortar explodes, an alien one level above is not affected. 4. I have 9 base, 1 per "continent". No way for me to get an air carrier ship. Just NO. Start a new game. 5. Game is VERY VERY long. No game speed settings. 6. No manual or something. "Armor will ask your solders 90 strengths. Get ready". Bugs: 1. Crushes to windows. 2. Aliens stuck between levels. 3. Requires steam online only. No way run it offline.

Disappointed. I could live with the retro look and feel, and the lack of originality. But this game is very, VERY buggy. Mouse cursor jumps around instead of moving smoothly; makes the game almost unplayable. I can't build a living wing on my second base; no idea why. The intro video doesn't even play. Gonna get a refund now. Might buy again later after some patches, and a hefty discount. Maybe 10 euros. If the reviews will be good.

A very quiet launch of a game that has been in the making for many, many years, almost thought it will never come at all. It is very obvious, that the developers wanted to do much more, but lacked the necessary funding. This seems to be a passion project to create a sequel to a very underrated but in my opinion one of the best UFO inspired games out there. The game is about it's mechanics. You research stuff but are somewhat in the dark, there are no voice lines, no story explaning things or giving you a sense of directions. Just the mechanics that construct a very fun base that continues to evolve. It is better optimized and has better graphics than UFO: Extraterrestrials Gold. The lack of certain features may be attributed to the fact that you need to research literally everything. Leveling up units helps, but leveling up research is even more fun. I still have to clock in more hours, but it is an impressive project completed by a small team of people with passion, game devs and modders (Bman!). The price is half of an AAA game. Is this worth it? I think so. Certainly more so than some AAA titles. True - it lacks the polish and has rough edges, but the core game mechanics will keep you glued to the screen, untill you forget such silliness as "story" or "voiceovers". You make the story. You control the struggle. Don't need the speaches that would only get boring with time, especially on repeated playthroughs. No BS kind of approach. Just jump in and have fun. Didn't even need a tutorial, the UI is intuitive and simple. I obviously can't give a score till I finish the game, but I can really recommend this one without any doubts about it. So far no bugs, fingers crossed it stays that way :)

Horrible game even for ufo/xcom series fan. Numerous bugs: from mild like raven moving/turning on its own on first turn or sound glitches to enemies having x-ray vision & firing through base walls. Awful balance: armor (both yours & aliens) absorbs most of the damage and you forced into a slogfest of "no damage, no damage... x10... crit, dead". different types of granades/rockets help a bit, but have limited usability in tight places which most maps have plantiful. Commanders (or base turrets?) being able to paralyze your whole team in 1 turn regardless of LoS/visibility. Lacksucker equipment variety (your basic rifle, RL with researchable missiles, mortar, granades, _single_ alien rifle with 2 ammo types; researchable armor against particular dmg type). Everything is just either +5dmg progression, or dmg type change. same for aircraft equipment. Air combat is just brain-dead "shoot till it blows". Base management simplified to 5 y.o. lvl: no more storage, no more personnel capacities, no alien containment, no profitable manufacturing. you cannot select location for the main base. you cannot have troops on any other bases either. and you cannot manufacture troop equipment on non-main base. And of course, graphics straight from 1998. Shallow & worse on all accounts than original dos ufo, and with ridiculous 40$ price tag to boot. If nostalgic or anything, just play openxcom/xpiratez instead. for free.

Its Unplayable unless you have an older mouse. The mouse lag/rubber banding is awful and nothing in settings or any fixes posted will help. Devs need to address this ASAP, especially for a $34.99 price tag Do not buy, wait till you see some updates in discussion boards.
