Word to the wise, the default keyboard controls for anyone who plays arrowkeys (and probably wasd too) are fucking garbage. Too much movement required on the fingers for these kinda arcadey action games without making your hand rest in an awkward position. Once you get past that hurdle (aka rebind which I was too lazy to do until 3 hours in lmao) though this game is incredible. Arcade mode is where it's at, campaign cool but a bit too restrictive and slow for me. Still fun thou.

This is exactly what I've been looking for. I've only played like half an hour so far but I'm already hooked as hell. We're talking about fast-paced wave-based arcade action that involves jumping, double-jumping, dashing, stomping, firing, gliding, supercharging your special guns, collecting gems to invest in better weapons, gadgets, and permanent upgrades. The controls are tight and super on point from what I can tell. I can already see myself pouring a lot of time into this one. Take my recommendation with distinction. EDIT: So now that I've played for a bit, the game turned out as an absolute must-buy. Dear developer, tack sâ fucking mycket, and cheers from Germany.

Hell is Other Demons has all of the features that make a great arcade shooter - combine that with an awesome aesthetic, and you have one of the better games in this genre. You can choose between 2 game modes. The arcade mode works like a simple arena roguelite where you can grind points for the leaderboard. After each stage, you can pick between different upgrades, additionally to finding new weapons during the level. The campaign is a little different. In the story mode, you can explore a small map with road forks, buy upgrades, and fight bosses. There are a few annoying bugs that don't affect the game too much. I had most of the achievements unlocked for some reason, also the 'alt+tab' command is temporarily locking my screen (I am sure it will be fixed soon). The game settings are pretty good, you can remap controller and even change the color palette. It's very similar to Gunlock in gameplay and format, but with a lot more content and mechanics. The soundtrack and visuals are pretty good (just getting it out of the way), although it's a little difficult to tell what is going on due to blinding effects. There are several arena themes with different types of enemies, and some of the stages even have unique features like traps. For the most part, the gameplay and mobility tools are relatively responsive, I just wish I didn't pick up weapons automatically. You can do most of the generic platforming moves like double-jump, dashing, hovering and head stumping which gives the game dynamic gameplay. There are plenty of unique weapons and upgrades, additionally to a few special attacks. I have not played the arena that much, but I think it has a good loop for those that like high-scores, and the story provides enough content if you just want some skill progression.
Pros:
+ good game settings + 2 modes, character unlocks + nice variety of upgrades and weapons + responsive platforming + pretty graphics, awesome music + achievements & leaderboard
Cons:
- mostly small bugs Overall Thoughts: 9/10 What can I say, it's just a really good game all around. It has plenty of content to justify the price. You can wait for a few patches until those achievement bugs are gone, not a big problem for me. I've just played it for half an hour but it's brutal. Good pixel art and awesome music, very challenging game. Easy to learn, hard to master. Demons appear in waves so you need to be careful in order to survive while using the evade button and shoot them the F down. Areas quickly become a threat while you're progressing, as traps are being added to your typical things that want to kill you. A really good arcade game.

A truly fantastic arena game which features a robust arcade mode and a mission based story mode, both with tons of unlockable stuff which will give you a nice feeling of progression even when you lose. The art and music are top notch and so is the gameplay, simple yet quite deep thanks to the several movement options and the various upgrades and weapons you can obtain. Heavily recommended to every fan of games like Downwell, Mega Man (especially the X and Zero series), Risk of Rain (the first one) and Super Crate Box.
Arcade Excellence
Hell is Other Demons is an arena-based arcade game developed by Cuddle Monster Games. Essentially HiOD is a wave-based arena game where you shoot and jump on top of enemies to kill them while collecting gems. HiOD has a pretty simple core, but it’s incredibly well executed.
Positives:

The presentation here is great. I really liked the art style, character design and sound design. There’s also unlockable palettes to add some visual customization if that takes your fancy.
The gameplay is really well done. You can kill enemies in two ways, shooting them or jumping on them. You also have an ultimate attack that has more of an AoE effect to it. Jumping on enemies to kill them is really satisfying (especially if you get an upgrade that makes this do more damage) and the shooting stuff is done well too. There are quite a few different weapons and they’re all well varied and well balanced. There’s only one or two that I don’t particularly like, but for the most part they’re all great fun to play with.
The controls are really tight, as you would want from a fast-paced arcade game. I never felt like I was dying because the game wasn’t responding the way I wanted it to or anything like that.
The first of the game’s two modes is the Campaign mode. It’s a series of individual levels, item shops and boss fights. The gems you collect from killing enemies can be used in the item shops to unlock new weapons, abilities and passives. Each level also has three objectives (as far as I’ve seen, they’re the same for every level: no weapons, no ultimate, flawless) that will earn you extra gems. I do think the difficulty ramps up a little too quickly in the campaign, but it’s pretty good. The arcade mode is definitely the main event though.
The Arcade mode is great, this is where I’ve had the majority of my fun with the game so far. It’s a string of levels each with three waves that progressively get more difficult. Collecting gems levels you up every so often, and when you level up you select an upgrade for your character (the variety of upgrades is great). Every two levels you move to a different zone that introduces new enemies to the mix which helps keep things fresh. You also get weapon drops every so often (according to a tooltip, mostly these come from completing a wave without getting hit but I’ve got them other times too) which add some more variety to each run.
The enemy variety is great, with each zone adding more. There’s a good balance between the really simple enemies and the more challenging ones. In fact even the simple enemies can be pretty tough to deal with in large numbers.
There are a few unlockable characters for the Arcade mode. I’ve only got three of them right now, but the ones I have are well varied and I like playing all three of them. They all have different strengths and weaknesses which is great.
The Arcade mode has an online leaderboard.

Negatives:

You do get a dash that lets you go through enemies and projectiles, which is helpful, but you can only dash horizontally. I would have liked to have been able to dash in different directions.
Not a huge issue, but I would like to see some more achievements added. As it stands there’s only five in the game and one of them is particularly difficult.

Verdict:
HiOD is an excellent arcade game with simple but well executed gameplay and a good amount of variety. The Arcade mode is definitely the focus, but the Campaign can be fun too. If you’re a fan of the Arcade genre, this is definitely one to pick up. Hell is Other Demons is an absolute blast to play. You should already be playing it instead of wasting your precious time scrolling through reviews ! A true indie gem. (a gem crafted in hell ? ^^) It's a perfect blend between 2d platformer and bullet hell, intense and challenging. All that with gorgeous pixel art, sexy soundtrack and huge replay value. The dev is also really active and listen to the feedback provided by the players. Crème de la crème, the game supports high refresh rate monitors, so no need to suffer with sub par 60hz ! Well recommended.
Rating 7.5/10
Click here to follow my curator if this review was useful to you.

This game is so fun and so underrated it honestly upsets me. A fast paced 2D bullet hell with great music. Action never stops and it is fun as hell. Visuals, music the variety it's all fantastic. It is a great game to kill some time and look at that price!

This game is excellent if you like twitchy action. It's obviously heavily inspired by Downwell, which is a good thing. I'm trying to 100% it - beating the developer's score may be tricky though.

Aaaaaaah, why are the controls so bad!???? Before they added aiming this game was super frustrating to play, and now the game is *literally* unplayable! WHY ARE MOVE AND AIM BOUND TO THE SAME STICK!??? The worst part is that this game looks super good. If there was an option to control moving and aiming with the different sticks, or to aim with the mouse, I would probably give this game a positive review.
