You could literally run this on a potato.
Duck Season PC is the recently released non-VR version of Duck Season, a creepy narrative shooter drawing inspiration from Duck Hunt. In Duck Season, your mum has got you a one-day rental for the game Duck Season, over the course of that day you’ll play a series of levels that get progressively harder. Things in your living room change between levels, and there’s a lot of stuff that can be interacted with, including a bunch of minigames.
Positives:

Duck Season looks fantastic. The both the living room and shooting area are really well designed, and the lighting effects for the shooting area are great. All of the models are really well done and there’s a consistent style.
The optimization of this game is just incredible. I’ve been running 60FPS on High settings from the get-go, and when I went to switch my profile for the game to Integrated so I could test the optimization, I discovered that I had been using integrated. To have a game that looks so good, run so well on an integrated graphics chipset is just unbelievable.
The gameplay is great. The shooting is incredibly well done and feels more natural than many of the FPS games I’ve played. I’m usually not great at FPS games, but I was a natural in no time. The shots have some good oomph to them, and with the spread you can hit multiple ducks at a time which is always satisfying. In the living room area there’s also different objects for you to inspect and interact with, many of which are pretty neat.
The dog is incredibly creepy. Even if you do a playthrough where you don’t anger the dog, he’s still incredibly creepy. I cannot emphasize enough how flipping creepy this dog is. I HATE him. I don’t want to spoil too much about what happens, but I will say that I’ve really enjoyed the weird stuff that happens.
One of my favorite parts of the game is all the VHS tapes you can watch. There are twelve in total, and they’re all very well done. My personal favorite is of course the Kazoo Kid tape. They add some nice flavor to the game and they’re fun to watch.
There are also a bunch of minigames in Duck Season. I haven’t played around with them too much, but they do offer some nice variety in between the regular levels. They can be a bit tough to control, but they are fun to play.

Neutral:

There are seven different endings in the game and a bunch of secret achievements for messing around with things in the game. So, the game is really focused on replayability. I think the gameplay is enjoyable enough for it to not feel too repetitive (especially if you’re taking breaks in-between runs through it) but my first run did only take about an hour, so people who don’t like replaying things may not enjoy this as much.

Negatives:

While there is some variety in how the actual Duck Season levels go down, and they do get harder as you go, I would have liked to see more variety. Most of the levels are three rounds of vanilla duck hunt, which I found got a little bit tiresome. Adding some more modifiers or different round types would be nice.

Verdict:
Duck Season PC looks good, feels good and it’ll run on pretty much any machine under the sun. There’s a good amount of creepy off the wall stuff here, and several different endings to unlock. As long as you’re up for replaying the game a few times to see everything, I’d definitely recommend giving this a go. VR There's Duck Season and Duck Season PC for those not having a VR set. The latter was released two years after the original version. You can clearly see the game is a downscaled version of a VR game - there are several graphics options but the FPS value is consistently kept at a high (around 200) level; I wished there'd been an option to keep it at a steady 30 or 60. Controls are a bit weird at start and they require some getting used to. Duck Hunt The game is clearly a nod to the light gun shooter called Duck Hunt - a favourite from my childhood that was released back in 1984. In Duck Season this is what we play - our protagonist is a kid equipped with the NES Zapper whose mum brings home the game but says it's only a one-day rental so we should make the most of it. A plot twist Overall, there are 8 levels after which we get to see the boss depending on whether we shot at our companion dog. Depending on the outcome of the boss fight and various other actions we can do there are overall 7 endings in the game. This is a nice surprise and also makes the game become horror by the end of it. '80s nostalgia Between levels we find ourselves in the living room. Our movement is limited in accordance with the Zapper's cable but we can still pick up a lot of objects including VHS tapes we can watch as well as other cartridges. I just love how you can look at the boxes of other games - by rotating you can clearly see that attention to detail is superb. The painting is coming off in the corners indicating their worn state. These games are short and fun to play and they are in 2D and heavily pixelated - the main attraction here is the titular game that plays in 3D and while inside the game at the lake we can turn around to see the kid sitting in front of the TV pointing the Zapper at us. Lots of hidden content and secret rooms for you to fully explore everything Duck Season has to offer. This is an indie game done alright and while replaying the 8 levels can be a chore after a while the new ending you find will definitely make up for it!

So I just had the greatest idea ever, the game should have 2 player mode called 'duel', one should be the child, and the other should be the the dog.

Duck Season is a reimaging of the classic NES game Duck Hunt with a horror twist. Story: You play as a young boy named David. One day your mother comes back with a copy of your favorite game Duck Season and you're going to make the most of this rental, but over the course of the day, you find that the game hides a sinister secret. One of the coolest things about Duck Season is it's story. There's a ton of hidden lore for the player to discover not to mention plenty of endings to go back and get. It's absolutely jampacked with story and it's actually a pretty engaging story. However it does require you to hunt down the hidden clues to piece together the hidden story and it's a really cool wait to hook the players. Graphics: Duck Season looks great considering it's an indie game. Before jumping into the environments I want to talk about the character designs. The kid and the mom look decent, but the center stage goes to the dog. That friggen dog is insanely creepy and the further you get the creepier the dog looks. I love how they twisted the idea of the Duck Hunt dog into whatever the hell the dog is in Duck Season. Now let's talk about the environments, The game itself is divide into two segments, the game world and the real world. When you're in the real world you are in your living room, which is pretty well designed. It actually feels like a kid lives there. There's toys thrown around the floor, bunch of video games and other kid like stuff. You can also turn back and see the back of your house, but you can't actually leave the living room are, just look back at the other rooms. The in game world is pretty eh, but it does have some cool visuals. You can't move so you just stand in place. In front of there's a field and ducks fly by every so often. It's pretty barren, but one cool thing is when you look behind you, you can see yourself playing the game in your living room. Audio: The audio is really well designed. The voice acting while semi-cheesy does it job really well and creates a perfect mood for the 80s setting. Each time you're back in your living room watching commercials for cartoons and toys these are acted so well and perfectly capture the feeling of the 80s. The soundtrack is pretty forgettable, but overall does it job really well. But the real star is the actual sound effects. They help build a perfect atmosphere to creep the hell out of you. It starts of innocent enough, but then you start hearing weird noises and other things and they definitely help to unsettle the shit out of you. Gameplay: Before I go any further, this game is available in two different versions you can buy, A non- VR version and a VR version. If you have a VR headset, buy that version, cause it is the definitive way to play this game, it will amplify your experience with the game, even though the non-VR is good as well. So let's get into the gameplay section. As I said before, the game is split into two sections, one is the real world segments and the other one is the in game world. In the real life portion of the game, you can interact with items like toys, other games and stuff like that. The real life world segments are usually there to progress the story further and not much else. When you press play on the Duck Season cart, you're transported into the game world where you basically play Duck Hunt. Each round you shoot ducks and you're graded on how well you did. You have a goal to reach for how many ducks you need to kill or just hunt as many as you can. It's fun, but just like the real life Duck Hunt, it gets boring pretty fast. There's not much variety here, every level is pretty much the same (not counting the final time you go in). I wish more variety could have been added to make the gameplay more interesting. The game also has some high replay value, considering it has plenty of different endings. Each run of the game lasts roughly an hour and to collect every ending it will take you roughly 8 hours maybe even more if you go for a 100% completion. Verdict: Duck Season is a great game. It's really creepy, has interesting lore and fun gameplay segments. Considering the price this is an absolute must for those who want an interesting story driven horror game with the 80s Duck Hunt backdrop. As I stated before however if you have a VR kit, go for that version as that one is definitely the way you need to experience this. But this non-VR version is not too shabby itself and is a great way to experience this if you don't have a VR kit. Final Rating: 9/10 Pros: + Really intriguing story + THAT DOG + Some really good scares + Plenty of replay value Cons: - Gameplay gets boring real fast If you liked this review please consider joining https://steamcommunity.com/groups/completingthebacklog and https://steamcommunity.com/groups/ImperialReviews
