Perfect example of why steam needs better quality control. This has all the depth of one of those F2P tower defence Iphone apps. The best thing this game actually does is defining the standard for 'crappy tower defence'. Avoid unless youre trapped in an airport for a week and you've already successfully washed all the windows and checked all the seats for pennies. Optimal Price: <1$

A cheap copy of Defense Grid

This game has some awful level design. They just tried to be way too cute with the design. It's not a strategy game if there's ONLY ONE WAY to beat a level. Strategy games are fun when you can think your way through it, and after playing the same level for a half hour I finally had to cut my losses. Uninstalled after 3 hours and like 10 levels.

Defense Technica is Defense Grid, but with less polish. Everything about it is directly from Defense Grid. The art style, the interface, the icons. Everything. This is like the shameless copy-catting you see on iOS, where they try to confuse the customer into buying the wrong game. This isn't totally broken and useless, but why pay $15 for this shameless thing, when you can pay $10 or less for the actual Defense Grid?

It's impressive in how many ways they miss the mark of what makes for an enjoyable tower defense game. There's little introduction or explanation to gameplay concepts. For example, the 4th level introduces its first weather effect, except it doesn't really tell you when this is happening, or what its effect is. You have to go out of your way to find such simple things. You know what other amazing feature it possesses? Enemies drop a cube of additional resources upon death, which you are required to hover your mouse over to collect. Maps become several screens large even from the first level, so if you create a few killzones, you have to constantly cycle between them to scavenge your rewards. It's kind of ludicrous in a terrible way, honestly. I would best describe Defense Technica as a half-hearted mash-up of Defense Grid (in look, feel, and mechanisms [you quickly acquire what is essentially the orbital laser, towers pop out of the ground in little boxes, etc]) and Kingdom Rush (towers are limited, but gain upgrade paths). Maybe somewhere in there is a kernal of a good idea, but it's not easily accessable, and it's hugely unpolished. Sadly, this is a purchase I regret.

Good tower defense if you like challenge. There aren't certain super powered tower in this game, it depends on what enemy's type(s) gonna hit you next (light-bio,light-mecha etc). Mazing options are quite puzzling! once you found the perfect one, you'll get a killer maze, so its not just some random-placed tower grid. Towers are quite varied and their upgrade paths are interesting and fun. Level designs are solid and seem well thought, I especially like their level-transformation concept and implementation. Control is a bit clunky at times though, also it is hard sometimes just to figured out the path of flying enemies and the lack of pause isn't making it any better. A lot of people complained but I actually spend more hours on this game, 35 hours vs 14 hours on Defense Grid, and I just finished all level on hardcore. As a fan of tower defense genre, I would recommend this game.

I have played completely through this game and both Defense Grid and Defense Grid 2. I don't think the other reviewers have played through this game entirely. While there may be similarities between this game and the Defense Grid games, there are also very significant differences. Since so many other reviewers are comparing the two games, I will as well. One of the biggest differences is that you can add upgrade ability to your towers between levels which carries over. In Defense Grid there is no overarching upgrade ability. Every level is brand new with the same vanilla towers. The upgrades in Defense Technica can significantly change the way a tower behaves. In Defence Grid, upgrades just increase damage and range. For example, the basic machine gun tower can go up the machine gun path which will give it longer range and more damage against biological enemies. Or it can become a mass driver which allows it to penetrate all enemies in a line specialized again mechanical enemies but with a much slower rate of fire. There are very distinct catagories of enemies and damage. One type of damage is optimal for a certain type of enemy but may be very weak against another. Defense grid has shielded and unshielded. This game has shielded, unshielded, heavy, light, bio and mechanical. If you specialize in one type of damage, you will become vulnerable to enemies that are resistant to it. Unlike in Defense Grid, when enemies make it to your core, they do damage. They are not stealing cores which float back to your base. They stay there until your core is destroyed at which point you lose the game. Also, the core itself has a couple of finite abilities. It can do a smart bomb a few times or heal itself using ether. Once the ether runs out, then you have no more for the rest of the level. I found the game to be enjoyable. IMO it is tactically more challenging with the added complexity of upgrades available and the more varying enemies attacking you.

I can understand why there are so many negative reviews for this game, at one point I was getting frustrated with it but I'm glad I persevered because overall I had a lot of fun with it. It's a Tower Defense similar in looks to Defense Grid. I'm not going to compare it to Defense Grid because I haven't played Defense Grid (this game was cheaper in a sale). It's a good looking game with a lot more depth to it than the many 'flash' style TDs out there. The towers and enemy animations are really nice, there are lots of upgrades and there are large maps with the opportunity to make mazes and re-route the enemy. So far so good, now the bad. It starts off fairly easy but then a few levels in gets really hard. If you can get past the few hard levels it goes back to being fun again, until you hit an even harder level. I want a game where I need to play some levels a few times before I can beat them, but not 10 attempts then rage quit. In a couple of instance the only way I could progress was to copy gameplay from youtube. But like I said only a couple, the vast majority of the 22 levels were challenging but manageable and a lot of fun. With this game one tower does not suit all, you need a good mixture and if you play long enough you'll get better at it and know what works. Don't expect to perfect every level first time, some you just scrape though and go back to later with upgraded towers and then perfect them. Despite the negatives I've mentioned, overall I really enjoyed this game, I don't even rate it just average, I consider it a very good game. There aren't many achievements but they all work and are obtainable (with a little help from youtube).

I dont understand all the negative reviews, I found this to be a fun and rewarding tower defense game. Yes, many people compared it to Defense Grid, and no, its not Defense Grid (but then neither was Defense Grid 2). I've the best part of 500 hours in DG, but it didn't stop me enjoying Defense Technica. There's really only one flaw in the game - namely the lack of a rewind, forcing you to restart a map if you are looking for "100% health, 100% ether" but find an alien getting through a weakness in the latter waves. I got 39 Hours of entertainment to pick up all the achievements. Sure there were some moments of frustration trying to solve a puzzle on some maps (the normal TD issue of where to deploy when faced with insufficient resources - i.e. making a path so the creeps have to go by a tower twice). But there was also a real sense of satisfaction when completing a stage with 100% health and ether. Pros: Nice graphics for a TD game + 22 maps, most of which are very interesting and challenging (i.e. all but the early tutorial levels) + Some maps have dynamic features and layout changes that make you plan ahead + Pathing (a must in TD games for me) + Interesting mix of tower types, almost all with dual upgrade paths (you can multiple instances of a tower and use different upgrade paths to optimise for light and heavy creeps) + Ground and air creeps - though more variety on the ground + Weather patterns that can affect your tower behaviour (though sadly these are fixed pattern during the level, would have been interesting to have less certainty) Cons: - No rewind or Checkpoints - the only real flaw in the game - Only two playable modes (normal and hardcore) - no survial - Some maps feel a bit more puzzle, with less scope for multiple strategies and more about finding the single right approach Bugs (Both minor, and didn't really take away from the game): - After the end credits, the application crashes instead of returning to the menu. Any achievements etc *are* still correctly applied, but it always happens when you finish the last map. - Sometimes the interface is a bit clunky when selecting towers - resulting in either not performing an upgrade or not deploying a tower. It will happen perhaps once a map - so certainly less than 1% of the time. Conclusion: If you liked Defense Grid, and are prepared to accept this *isnt* Defense Grid, then Defense Technica is a very entertaining TD game. If you have any doubts, pick it up on sale. For the full price, I got my money's worth of entertainment. Any significant sale percentage would be a bargain.

This game seemed so cool. Quite good graphic, interresting and plenty towers, maps with many paths and good design. The problem that it have difficult [strike]spikes[/strike] walls. I reached a big map where I have no clue what to do. In games there is difficulty when you feel, ok I lost this but I know what should I do, but not here. I tried that map alot of times, realy. There I feel all my towers is ineffective. As some said earlier few maps is rather a puzzle with only one way to finish and you may copy it from youtube. As a casual player I dont feel that I have to suffering with this game anymore. There is alot of other good tower defense games around. This was my first negative review about a game and I write it because of the big disappointment I feel.
