  I absolutely adore this DLC. The campaign is great and the multiplayer content is definitely worth the effort of getting. My problem with this almost $20 DLC is that it's a DLC for a DLC for another game. Call to Arms is $15, Gates of hell is more than double that price, and then there's this. That's a lot of paywalls. Buy on sale.

  finland campaign was meh - lot of bugs. you start with 15 soldiers (always "special forces") and you are expected to get rid of hundreds of soviets.. cool, but honestly only way to do these missions is trial and error. and for the love of god - why we cant have conquest improved? instead of real waves of enemies (where you could for example advance after defeating a wave?? jumping into better positions and so on) enemy forces are coming on you like a dripping sink: 1 tank, 10 guys, 1 tank, 20 guys, 1 tank, 1 truck and so on. makes zero sense, especially that player have aces to few waves of proper reinforcement - why ai have access to 100 tiny"waves"

  Unique and fun. Buggy and unpolished. Bit harsh of me ? Nah. Sick of devs releasing buggy crap and expecting the consumer to remain silent and deal with it. Nope, I will not. I will thumb this otherwise okay DLC down for being released in it's state.

  Rise of the Finland

  Welcome to the Finnish front. You are facing a nearly impossible challenge – defend your homeland against all odds. You will be outnumbered by the Soviet army in the Winter War – Talvisota and the Continuation War. Later, a strong German army will challenge you in the Lapland War.

  Main Campaign

  It contains six missions. Each of them can take one or two hours to finish. Playtime depends on the difficulty. I played on hardcore and enjoyed it. Missions offer good challenges, and they aren't frustratingly hard. You will control new unique units and vehicles that are hard to see in other World War II games. Missions have a good variety, from small shootouts to big battles.

  Skirmish

  Besides the main campaign missions, you can play new skirmishes. If you remember the campaign from Men of War: Assault Squad 1 and 2, you can now play the same-styled missions in Gates of Hell. Your task is to capture all zones, and you must defend your command post. Each zone will grant you new reinforcements and points necessary for calling units. The enemy calls in counter attacks from time to time, so keep some defence units in your captured zones. Before starting skirmish, you can choose between All-Round, Defensive, Irregular or Offensive doctrine. It would be nice to have some information about what kind of reinforcements you will get. Each skirmish map can take you one, two or even more hours of playtime. Again, it depends on the difficulty, your tactic and a little bit of luck.

  The Visuals

  Talvisota got completely new assets made from scratch, so map designers proved their skills and raised the quality level. Other devs didn’t sleep as well. Vehicles have detailed 3D models with nice textures. It's incredible what devs can get from GEM Engine.

  Conclusion

  Talvisota DLC is a must-have for all owners of Gates of Hell: Ostfront. You can enjoy the new faction in single-player and multiplayer. Map creators and Editor players will get new high-quality assets and vehicles to play with. So take this first DLC for DLC, you will not regret it.

  TLDR: Cool and unique DLC for a still buggy and unpolished game. The reason for the thumbs down is purely because the game still has so many glaring issues and now they are releasing DLC. Heads up: You can save a few bucks if you purchase this as part of a bundle (listed on the store page) as pointed out by another user. It's minimal, but yeah. It's nice of the devs to have this option in my opinion. That's cool of them. Finland faction is terribly weak in this so be aware of that. Like horrifically outgunned by even the lighter Russian armor. But... They are also awesome to see in action. This DLC adds a lot - and the new content is cool, but there are still so many bugs present, lots of inconsistencies, and the game is too overbalanced due to obvious biases so the game doesn't really fit with the realism and historical accuracy that they market the game to be. AI is still terrible and has bugs, glitches, and tons of issues making them painful to use. The new maps have some serious pathfinding issues. Not enough content for the price though. Ignore the reviews that say they got this for free from today - they are paid moderators who praise the game no matter what. I counted 4. Crashes still seem to be present even with this latest DLC/update and on vanilla (no mods) The game is not a bad one, but there are some serious issues with it. From launch day, they have been horrible GAME BREAKING issues that have been reported dozens of times and some of these STILL EXIST. This expansion/update seems to have broken some things as well that were working - but that is understandable. A lot changed. I am glad they released this DLC and the big update that went with it, but I don't feel that they should have been doing DLCs already considering the main game still has SO many problems and it's not even finished yet as they have said before. (But they also say it is a finished product and many bugs are "features" yet they occasionally fix their "features" so that's odd) Sloppy. The devs still have not enabled the bot players to use combined arms so we have to rely on a mod to do so. The bots only ever use a few light vehicles, tons and tons and tons and tons and tons of tanks (including very heavy tanks) and spam infantry and an occasional mortar/arty/AT piece. The odd thing is, the bots know how to use static mgs and everything else but the devs don't add them in for reasons beyond my understanding.

  Talvisota should just be free... Sure it adds a whole new faction, but it is already a DLC for a DLC, it's very greedy men of war assault squad 2 had all of this without paid DLC.

  The campaign missions on co-op (no saves) were some of my most frustrating gaming experiences ever, hence my first review ever. There were some design decisions in the missions I wasn't a fan of, but first and foremost it's a buggy mess. First you spend an hour clearing out a bridge and a small settlement from all enemies with a handful of men. After that you're given an AA-tank and a towed AA-gun, with a new objective of holding the bridge against an armored counter-attack. Oh, by the way, your own AI just ran over that AA-gun while it was being towed and it's gone before the battle even begins. An hour and a half into the mission, you have one vehicle and a couple men left, but the enemy seems to be finished, as they are no longer pushing. But for some reason you haven't won despite holding the bridge. You slowly start searching the town for stragglers, killing a few. It still doesn't end. Then you make it to the end of the map where the enemy came from, and find two enemy tanks, just sitting idle. You move your last armored vehicle into a position to side shot the idle tanks. All of a sudden you hear the sound of a nebelwerfer barrage, coming from yet another vehicle that is stuck somewhere outside of the map bounds. It kills all your remaining men, but the game still doesn't have the courtesy to end, not even in a loss. You are just staring at an empty map, then decide to come here and write a review.

  Gates of Hell: Talvisota priced 17.99 USD is a DLC I recommend for you to pick up especially when the sale/promotion for this content is at least 20% off or higher. Or if you want to be more supportive to the studio, just pick it up anyways. Because... Talvisota is a DLC is what I fondly call "Pay to Fin", However this title may be a little misleading as while yes you do unlock a Finish Campaign, Finish Faction for multiplayer, 3 doctrines for each of the 3 time periods, and Beautiful finish maps and assets. The DLC is Packed and Stuffed with so much more. It includes updates and added units, models, and assets to the German and Russian armies, adds a brand new and for some a returning game mode known as skirmish which while being under single player in the menu, is in fact multiplayerable just like the finish campaign and are packed in unique non recycled maps. Which is saying alot considering how your basic AAA developers just take existing maps and just zone in and call it a day. Barbed Wires Studios First Faction expansion is filled to the brim with goodness, free updates that even now after post release get love from the devs to help balance and maintain a beautiful balance and homeostasis with the game ecosytem, great historical significance and authenticity you start to forget this is an rts and not an actual historical simulator. The finish faction itself plays more unique which adds a breath of life in the game that was not as pronounced were the russian and germs were similar and different enough to retain balance. The also have implemented unique mechanics which I hope to see retroactively adapted and utilized both in new and the old factions. Such as heavy engineers who can build bunkers or a looted pool of cheap, random, very useful vehicles, or the search light which just paint targets and aircraft at great distances to aid your AA or artillery. Overall I think Barbed wire studios did an amazing job and not only will I Pay to Fin. I recommend that if your blessed enough to pay to Fin. You do so as well.
