I've seen a lot of negative review that all basically say the same things: 1. Software is buggy 2. Doesn't come with a butt load of free resources 3. It's not easy. . . enough. I'll address each of these a little, then I'll give my own personal review. As for bugs, yes, there are some bugs. You know what else there is? There is someone almost constantly checking the discussion board in order to help you through your issues. jay_rab works seemingly tirelessly to answer questions and look at issues to provide the best possible experience with the software. One might say that there shouldn't be bugs in the first place, but in a software like this, which is frequently updated with new features and options to make it even more user-friendly, things will sometimes happen. Any developer worth his/her salt knows this going into a project. There's also human error on the part of the user, and that is frequently the culprit of the so-called bugs. If you aren't willing to be thorough with your own work, don't cry about it. It's also true that TyranoBuilder isn't brimming with resources upon first launch. Do you know what it does have, though? It has a dedicated thread on the discussion board that's filled with links to free and pay for use resources, including sprites, music, and backgrounds. In fact, that post is stickied right at the top. There are also people in discussion who offer their services, some free and some pay. So, while the resources aren't bundled with the software, they are readily available. If you find they aren't "good enough", then I suggest you take some art and music classes and show us how it's done. The complaint that the software isn't easy enough to use is frankly ridiculous. Having no coding knowledge at all going into this software, I found it extremely easy to get a handle on. The official tutorials are exceptionally straight forward, and there are plenty of user-made tutorials that focus on specific elements if you'd just take the time to google and watch a video or two. What seems more of an issue is that so many people bought this with the expectation that the software would create the game for them. Sadly, this is not a fully self-aware piece of AI. It's a game dev software, which gives the user a ton of tools with witch to make amazing games. It is entirely up to the user to make the most of the software. The drag and drop features list really does already practically make the game for you, you just need to put them in a coherent order. Everything is customizable. Everything is functional. You can even use coding on top of the ready-made functions to make something completely unique and astounding. To me, it feels like a lot of people want to blame the software for their own shortcoming in comprehension and creativity. So, now that I've laid out my wall of text regarding the common complaints I've seen, I'll give a quick rundown of TyranoBuilder as I see it: This is a constantly evolving, yet somehow comprehensive feeling VN software for which no coding knowledge is needed in any way. However, by referencing the TyranoScript tags and learning some VERY BASIC coding techniques, this software opens up an entire world of creative possibilities for those willing to work hard to see their story come to life. Tyrano boasts so many tools and features that it's hard to believe it's available for $15. The most important thing, in my opinion, is that TyranoBuilder has some of the most dedicated and invested devs I've ever seen. They strive, constantly, to give the user a fantastic experience. Whether it's answering tech questions, or giving quick but effective coding advice, or even just encouraging creators who share their progress. I, for one, am willing to eat a few bugs and errors to be able to have that at my disposal. And to be clear, it won't matter how intuitive the software or how abundant the resources, you will always have to take the time to learn and be patient, and you'll always have to work harder than you thought you would, and you'll always have to suffer setback after setback, if you want to make a game worth playing.

Simple to use, you're able to pretty much make exactly what you what. Would definitely reccommend if you're interested in making your own VN. Or if you want to make absolute trash like I did. Edit: Okay so I did more playing around, and need to give this review a fair shake. First of all, I would definitely recommend it. The drag and drop nature of the app is very simple and easy to use. I made my first "trash" game without consulting the tutorial and found it to be very self explanatory. That being said, the tutorial is very well written and explains how to work TyranoBuilder. Custom Scripts /are/ doable, so that's no worry either. I don't remember if it's mentioned early, or on the store page, but there is definitely custom script support. You can add your "own"(or what you found on google) art and music and pretty much everything. I got this on sale, but even for full price ( I mean really, $15?) it's definitely a steal for such a simple to use and learn app, that can compile the game for PC, Mac, HTML5, IOS, and Android.

The Good TyranoBuilder is a very good piece of software for making a basic visual novel. It has an intuitive system for setting up text, character entries/exits, and scene changes. It also has a (reasonably) simple scripting system for making variables, and other useful things for more complex games. The Bad What TyranoBuilder is awful at, is organization. Once you start having 40-50 Sound FX files, 30 music files, etc. it's impossible to quickly access them in the editor, as it's just organized based on when you imported them. Unfortunately, this makes it rather annoying when your game gets to even moderate size. Also, the lack of ability to organize scenes makes keeping track of what scene is what a pain (get yourself some flowcharts and label them or you'll be regretting it later). The Ugly I've encountered a number of bugs while working in the program, generally fixable with a restart, but they can be an annoying time-waster. Overall I like TyranoBuilder and will continue to use it, and suggest it to people who want to build visual novels, while it's not the most advanced, for the price it is a great 'out of the box' game creator 7/10 score.

The following comes from the eyes and mindset of a software engineer. TyranoBuilder is a software that is extremely active and very engaging. It's easy to understand, and even if you're new to video games and the design or scripting process, it's very intuitive and the community is more than happy to help (in several languages). They have a VERY active support system, constantly coming to the rescue and explaining many aspects of the scripting and normal software that makes me feel more than comfortable going to them for help. I've even just found out that the raw source code for each project is available, so if you're like me and want to skip all the visual jazz and just program the whole dang thing, you actually can. TyranoBuilder is a great way for people to get into scripting and programming. Every engine claims it's set up so that you don't require programming skills, but this is honestly a white lie, though in no way "bad". You ABSOLUTELY can make a game in TB without ANY programming. It is wonderfully simple and easy... But your game will be too. When you go into TB, go in prepared to learn to script or program. If you want to create a romance sim, you're going to need variables, you're going to need branching scenes, and you're going to need to know how instantiating, declaring, and incramenting/decramenting works, especially if you want even a semblance of player interraction with your game. If you're looking to just make a visual book, you won't need scripting. Their API (Tags Reference) for the built in language is fantastically simple to follow, if sometimes a little too simple. But in the end, if you just post a comment on steam inquiring about a tag you didn't understand, you will ALWAYS receive a kind and more-than-happy-to-assist response. The support is one of my favorite things about this. Another thing I love is their variables- they have temporary variable types that get deleted when the game is closed, game variables that are particular to each save, and system variables that stay with your computer and are independant of saves (that can be for such things as "you've gotten all the endings, have a super secret ending"). It was probably what sold the software to me in the first place. THE BEST THING POSSIBLE about this game is that it has the ability to build the game for you for the best consoles. I'm talking Mobile, Linux, PC, Mac- the whole shebang. With a click of a button and a selection from a dropdown, it does it FOR YOU. I LITERALLY CANNOT EXPRESS how amazing that is. It might just be because trying to get UE4 to make a PC build was the death of me and an entire week/month, but this is literally the best part. SERIOUSLY CANNOT SAY I'M JUST SO HAPPY WITH THAT PART. Overall, I like this software. For what it's worth and what you get, it's amazing and wonderful. You're not just paying for the software- you're paying also for the support, the people, the experiences, and even the game jams, which they do host. TL;DR: If you aren't afraid of working hard, do it! But then again, that goes for anything in the game industry. Making games is NEVER the same as playing them.
After creating a full visual novel for the Indie Game Maker Contest (Game: Monstropolous) I can say that without a doubt you will be able to do exactly what is promised in the game description.
Pros Creating a finished visual novel is easy, yet the program supports complex scripting for features like variables. With the software as is, you will be able to create choose your own adventure style programs that you can give away or sell. With variables and advanced scripting you can:

Create choices or access to areas based only on previous decisions
Create a system to track a running list of variables such as getting points each time you help a certain person in the game
Display specific dialog depending on previous choices and or other variables
With a large amount of time and scripting you could create a battle system or even an inventory system; potential for other minigames although it would take some time and programming
The scripting offers a deep list of possibilities for advanced users or users who don't mind learning a simple scripting language. The forums offer quick responses normally and even has a community manager who is right on top of things. Cons All the cons can be addressed in upcoming updates easily, so hoping they consider the following: Debugging system. Currently if you exit a character without having it in the scene the game will just freeze and not go on. If you have complex scene jumps you can easily miss something like this and I would love to see the program have a debugging option for simple issues like this. Export Directly to Android. Currently you have to use about 3 different programs to get an Android APK where you can export to web or Windows in 1 click. This leads to so many issues and potential for unsupported features not to mention it is a difficult process even if you don't have any problems (such as music not playing, etc). If you do, then you have to back track and decide which of the many steps and multiple programs has the issue. Plugins. Would be nice to have the ability to support community driven plug ins so battle systems, inventory etc could be looked at possibilities. Indents or custom coloring. I would like to be able to indent like an ordered list style layout or change colors to color code different areas (currently sections have a 'Label' header but the color is the same as other functions).
Overall
I would easily suggest this software, especially at this price point, as it is a great program for creating simple to mid-level games.

I made my first visual novel - my first game, period - in something like 4 days using this. I mean, granted, I am a digital artist so I can easily make my own sprites, but nonetheless. I have very little know-how when it comes to things like game development and coding. Seriously though, like, if you tried Ren'Py but staring at blocks of code made you feel like a troglodyte who can't do basic things, this is the tool for you. It's EXTREMELY simple and intuitive. It's pretty much entirely drag-and-drop, and the only coding I had to do was a line or two for variables. Also it exports to HTML5 in like 2 seconds so anyone can quickly and easily play your games if you throw them on dropbox with zero installation. That is insane! It feels extremely easy and natural to work with, with very little stopping and struggling to figure out how to do something. It's also a very stable program from what I've experienced, and it apparently offers Android and IOS exporting built in with the base $18 purchase, something other game development suites often charge an arm and a leg for. My only cons are the following: The documentation (That I could find) on the custom coding is a bit scant, I had to use a steam guide to clarify how to use variables. But you're probably not going to do much more than a few variables in your game anyway Things can act a little weird in the HTML5 version vs the software's preview, things take longer to load, timing like putting waits between dialogue can suddenly take twice as long - but it's a pretty small beef, you can just adjust the timing to compensate, and the loading times are understandable I was a little unsatisfied with the lack of customization for sprite movement and placement - you can't resize a sprite and put it in the background or make it bounce up and down, for instance, but maybe there's a way to do that I haven't found yet All in all, it is A Very Good Program. If you want to make visual novels, buy the hell out of this. I wish I could go back in time and give this to my 10-year-old self, that's how easy it is to use.

Review date: 03-30-2015. First of all, I want to say that it's a very nice software. It is very simple if you know nothing about programming language. It looks very nice and well organized. The tutorial they have on their website is well-explained. But... it's unfinished, there are quite a few -important- issues to work on. -Fullscreen mode is not available. (Which is a big deal.) -Can't use custom fonts. - [strike]Can't resize characters[/strike] and the text boxes. Tends to make things bigger or smaller than what you want. -And the most important, doesn't work with Steamworks (overlay). When they fix the "Official suggestion list", I might try it again. As of now it seems more like the Official suggestion list is more of a list of items that, quite honestly, should have been in before release date. If I see a lot of changes I will consider changing my review but as of right now the ´´ease of access´´ this programs gives is completely washed out by how basic and rudimentary it is. I cannot recommended it as it is. Seems unfinished to me. EDIT: I'm aware of the latest update. I can only add that TyranoBuilder is still fun for people who just want to fool around creating visual novels, not for something serious or commercial.

I don't even know why this program is getting such possitive reviews. Tyrano Builder is full of horrible bugs that will make your experience horrible, and no, those bugs are not getting solved any time soon. Some of these bugs have been troubling me for a year or more, and the developers don't even care to solve them. You can look in the forums, and you will see how the developers ignore people that encounter these bugs. I will put an example: If you zoom in with the 3D camera option, and you are also in full screen, your text window will become invisible. That is a game breaking bug, that will prevent you from going full screen. More, more, If you want the game window to be in the middle of the screen, rather than having a big black bar on your right. Then You have to never user the 3d camera (that is very important for games like this). The 3d camera is basically broken, but as you continue using the program, you will notice that every 2 steps you go forward, you have to go back because something broke with a bug. Most options the program gives you, like the SKIP option, are also broken. Live 2D is broken too. I can't recomend this program, it gave me a headache. Even if they add new content in the future, expect it to be broken for at least a year. EDIT: So I tried this engine again after a few years to see if it got better, and it did to an extent, but do not use this engine for any serious project; specially if you want to sell your game. There is no support for steam DRM (what prevents people to pirate your game by just copy pasting your game). There are countless bugs. The engine gets very confusing the larger your game gets.

Proposed to senpai. She said no. Found senpai's source code and edited it so that she'd notice me more. Proposed to senpai again. She said no again, however, this time she noticed me. 10/10 would use to change history again.
