ميزات Train Simulator: NJ TRANSIT® U34CH Loco Add-On

The distinctive, burly, and powerful General Electric U34CH diesel that toted commuters in New Jersey and New York for more than two decades is now available for Train Simulator!

Created by DTM, this Add-On includes the husky GE U34CH diesel in NJ Transit livery accompanied by Pullman-Standard Comet I cab cars and coaches.

In the early 1970s, the commuter rail lines radiating from Hoboken (New Jersey) Terminal were primarily operated by Erie-Lackawanna on behalf of the New Jersey Department of Transportation (NJDOT). Equipment renewal was an imperative, and NJDOT funded the purchase of 32 General Electric U34CH locomotives, a six-axle behemoth based on GE’s 3,600-horsepower U36C design, but with the addition of HEP (head-end-power) equipment. As a result, the locomotive provided 3,430-horsepower for traction, thus its U34CH designation.

Purchased to serve with the U34CH was Pullman-Standard Comet I commuter equipment, constructed in cab car and coach configurations for “push-pull” service. A total of 155 Comet I cars were acquired by NJDOT.

Over their careers, the U34CH and Comet I combos could be found working virtually all the non-electrified commuter routes out of Hoboken. In 1983 NJ Transit assumed commuter rail operations in the region and NJT’s flashy livery of silver with tri-color stripes was applied to a number of the U34CH diesels.

After two decades of duty, the U34CHs were retired from NJT commuter service in 1994. One U34CH, No. 3372, has been saved by the United Railway Historical Society of New Jersey. Some Comet I cars remained in NJT service until 2009.

The GE U34CH DLC for Train Simulator includes the U34CH with a range of realistic features including HEP control and is dressed in NJ Transit livery. The Comet I cab cars and coaches also appear in NJT livery.

Included Scenarios

Four career scenarios featuring the U34CH and Comet I equipment in “push-pull” service on the Train Simulator North Jersey Coast & Morristown Lines route are included:

  • 01 - Train 630 to Hoboken

  • 02 - Train 651 to Dover

  • 03 - Train 607 to Dover

  • 04 - Train 538 to Hoboken

Okay. First off, thanks to DTM and all who were involved in the making of this DLC. It's wonderful to finally have another variant of the comet coaches that I, as well as others have long requested, and should have been supplied years ago. I'm not much of an audiophile, so I won't comment on that, as whether they're inaccurate or not, usually get's fixed at some point or another. Though I will say, I personally like the sounds. I do realize that this is 3rd party offering, with their own set of skills and tools that they have access to use in order to produce the content they're able to offer, so I can forgive that the detailing of the may not be as on the level of the older Comet offerings, or up to current standards, BUT..... by far it certainly isn't terrible either. So it really shouldn't dissuade anyone interested in purchasing this. This is still a pretty worthy purchase just for the Coaches and Cab Car alone. I love that both the coaches and cab car both have 3 perspective passenger views. That right there is something I love seeing and having in passenger oriented DLC. So, In my personal opinion, I recommend this DLC to anyone who has looked forward to these coaches. And I'm pretty sure this will be of great use for repaints.

A must have. Pros: Sound is incredibly accurate. Horn and bell are perfect. Mostly correct HEP simulation. It's not perfect, but besides the Racetrack F40PH, this is the only time we've seen the addition of engine-driven HEP simulation "straight out of the box". Lots of other small added details in the cab that you can play with, which is typical of DTM. Overall the locomotive gives off the same feel as the U34s did when in service, big beastly commuter locomotives. There's also the inclusion of the low door Comet Is, which is an added plus. Cons: Only one paint scheme is included. However, I have heard from people that worked on this DLC that they do plan to rectify this issue. How they plan to do it isn't clear yet, but we can hope. For now though, we are stuck with a single paint scheme. The modeling on the coaches does appear to be a bit subpar, but the interior view makes up for it. Overall I give this a solid 90%. Huge thank you to DTM, Minerman, and his dad for making this. You guys are awesome.

I really wanted to like this, but I am still not sure where I sit with it. I was of course happy for another U-Boat for the sim and finally another NJT diesel unit with some older Comet stock and cab car. I have been so used to the old VRC Uboats that came out years ago and was hoping for that level of quality, but I feel a little let down. I have a video that will be up on my YouTube channel shortly if you want to see it in action and get your ears on it if you were on the fence like me. First, the positives NJT content U34CH which has been asked for for ages Comet stock including cab car ...that's about it You can see in the images the lack of texture quality in the cab of the loco and even more so in the Comet cab car. I will say the coach interior doesn't appear to bad and definitely has the look and feel of the older Comet stock, but the cab is quite bad. On the sounds, I would have expected a lot more. The horn loop is horrendous and has no difference in volume between interior and exterior. If you open the windows or doors in the cab, it sounds exactly the same. I don't know if it is even the correct horn as I never heard these in action, but I am going to guess it is not as it sounds like a lot of the DTM releases in that respect. The textures on the exterior are also lacking in quality and resolution. The U34 itself is not nearly as bad as the Comets. The Comets appear very light and washed out. They were of course a smooth body car that carried a matte finish, but were never to this brightness. They honestly feel and look like the very old New Haven Budd RDCs that came out years ago. You can also see the much lower resolution on logos and color bleed on where it was painted on the car sides. You could also loose a limb at the speed in which the coach doors close on these things. There is a nice touch of the platform spotlights on the side and the body-side reflections of the lock lights, but nothing more stood out. Like I said. I am sitting here on the fence about it as I know there will likely be some folks in the community that will skin the hell out of these (EL, Conrail, and maybe some better quality on the NJT) and of course much better sounds, but I am not sure if this is worth the $20 today or waiting until this product is repaired in the future. It almost feels rushed, unfinished, and something that we would have been ok with as a new release 5-6 years ago. It may be something you are definitely after if you want some 70-80s commuter diesel action or if you simply want to add to your NJT collection. Just take a look and a read and maybe check out my short video on YouTube to make your own mind up https://youtu.be/tB9Cjhjh09c

Cant recommend, at full price anyway. I was looking forward to this but there just isnt much to it. The sounds, not the worst and not the best. The looping is all janky, really kills it. The engine and hep sounds are all washed out, just has that "crushed" sound - like a blown speaker. One caveat is the traction motor whine is there, most locos dont feature this. Im trying to find the good, i am - but its not much I looks ok ( the engine) I know alot of time dedication and work go in to such a venture so this isnt with mal intent - but the cars and cab car are really really not good. Low texture, like one step up from msts. Like the RioGrande switcher as of late, just not good. Made a quick vid incase you want a sample before you shell clams out https://youtu.be/1L2MO5q5Weo

I can't believe how bad the the loco model is -it looks like something from a train simulator 20 years ago!Sorry I bought it-Blocky detail -just awful!

I loved this loco. It was different to drive ( the brakes took some getting used to), It had four very good scenarios that involved full length drives of my favourite American commuter route, and it sounded superb. A big thumbs up from me

I have been looking forward to this for awhile and once I saw that it had come out I was so excited. However after buying it and running it a few times I am very disappointed. The textures on both he engine and the cars is very low quality, both in the cab and outside and also the cab car as well. The horn is one of the worst loops that I have heard in a while and the sounds in the cab car use very similar sounds to the engine. The horn on the cab car is the same as the horn on the engine, and the engine sound is very good but not affected if you are in the cab versus outside. The sound that I do like is the hep sound and the traction motor sound is spot on and takes me back to watching these great engines as a kid, they have a very distinctive traction motor sound and the developers nailed it. I hope there is a sound pack for this set and I hope it's free. I'm not sure if i'm going to keep this set or not as I feel they could have done so much better. We need this set and other sets produced in TSW. This route the NEC and all NJT branches out of the city would be amazing, as train simulator continues to be buggy and the two scenarios that came with the North Jersey route kept locking up on me. I would not buy this again if I had known what I was getting into the set just feels cheap.

I'm so happy that these have been made for TS but I honestly can't recommend this addon in its current state. FIRST OFF, something that needs to be put out of the way right off the bat before you buy : The Comet 1 Cab Car is NOT able to trail behind the F40PH-2CAT or GP40PH-2B from DTG. Doing this will create multiple dump and memory errors. This is not due to my PC, graphical settings, or any other stock in the consist. Having it trail behind those 2 engines will eventually cause a game crash/dump, typicially with the GP402B it will happen in seconds after loading, every single time, no matter the detail level, route, etc, and this will also happen with the F40CAT but you might get a few minutes of play time in before it happens. This isn't just my game either, others have had the same issue. That means that these cab cars are BROKEN, and they should work fine with any other NJT stock released but they don't, and for 20 bucks that really sucks as people will want to use them with the GP40 and F40. The Comet 1s also have a large amount slack between them, which in a solid set wouldn't have happened in real life. The Horns are very very poorly looped and the CC and U34 share the same poor sounds, which is just sloppy. At the very least the horn should work properly without cutting in and out so terribly. The texture work is questionable for today's standards, not terrible by any means, not great though. Overall its a no for me. The fact that the Cab Cars are outright broke and they are charging money for it is bad. I might change my review if they update the sounds, textures and fix the Cab Car so it actually works with other NJT engines in both pull and push mode, but until then, you can live without it.

Well I will say this the brakes are very strange with this locomotive but I still love the thing maybe because it looks so good and has plenty of power,Also inside the cab the horn sounds amazing and the lights are very good to.
