  It's good. English translation not out yet but I couldn't wait the extra halfyear/year. Google translate through my phone pointed at the screen works well enough to understand 95% of the mechanics and allow me to win on Lunatic difficulty. Supposed to be a mod in progress that gives a basic translation to English, hopefully out soon, check the forums.

  This is an early access review after I have finished the highest difficulty on all characters.

  Summary

  I can only recommend this game to people who are new to the genre, but even then, Slay The Spire (which from now on I will be refering to as "STS") is cheaper and even more so on sale. If you enjoy Touhou and would like to play STS with that flavor this game can also be worth it. I don't think people who have played STS would enjoy this game because it is not different enough and it doesn't support modding. It is already quite close to being released and you can play an entire complete run on 3 different characters (there will be 5 in total, hopefully more if this game does well financially). I do wish the game to do well and if you have the money, buy the game. It is good, just that it has to live up to STS.

  What I like about this game.

  <*>The game is beautiful. Every card has its own animation even basic cards look nice. Enemies also have animations for their moves and their attack looks different. Everything has an idle animation, although they could probably use a bit more variations. I have always wanted a STS but with cool looking attacks and this is just the game with that. The UI looks great. Everywhere I look there is always something nice to feast my eyes on.<*>I really like the sounds in this game. It has always been very disappointing to me how attacks in STS all sound the same. Different enemies all make the same kind of slashing noise when they attack. That is not the case here. Lasers are common and they all sound different. Rockets sound like rockets. A heavy metal clank is played when you are hit with a wrench. If you play a card that stops time a clock ticking noise is played and it gradually slows down. It is very satisfying especially when you are in the moment, experiencing that sound Junko makes as she takes away your mana.<*>The mana system allows for some very practical and interesting multi-classing capabilities. So instead of one type of mana that can play everything. You have 5 different types of mana (and 2 two special ones) that can only play cards that correlate to that mana. Your character starts with 2 kinds, let's say you have fire and water. You can't play cards with a nature requirement on it and they won't show up in the reward screen. How you would obtain different manas is by killing a boss (Although I wish it would be possible in events as well) and choosing a reward that offers mana in the color that you want. There are also cards that are character exclusive however, you can also unlock them by killing a boss and getting rewards that unlock them. It allows for a bit more fine control on if you want to multi-class and to what extent, which is a much better way of doing it than Prismatic Shard in STS where it's just pure chaos. Maybe you want to dip into Silent a bit to get some card draws as Ironclad. You won't get the really good cards if you don't invest heavily into it and as a side effect, lessen your chance of getting cards of your own class as well as your capability of playing them. At the moment however, this system is still somewhat not extensively supported seeing how limited your selections can be. I probably will fully recommend this game if they decide to lean more into this, offering 1 more choice to choose from and adding more exhibits (relics).

  What I can overlook, for now.

  <*>Balance is a very difficult art. Some enemies are quite above the curve. Some cards are underpowered and there are cards that aren't great in STS that are still tuned down. One such example is "Indiscriminate Ignition" which is "Fire breathing" in STS but it costs 2 mana, deals half the damage but now also deals damage once at the end of the turn and upgrades to be 1 cost. Although some are understandably weakened such as Feel no pain costing 2 and upgrades to 1 as "Ironclad"s in this game can generate a bit more cards that exhausts itself. When you slay a boss, the rewards will always increase your mana but only by ~0.6 (in STS term), in exchange, they do not have any downside and will provide additional benefits (except for like 5 of them), although might not be very significant. So in order to balance that your cards are usually slightly more efficient in this game. Which means enemies will have to do quite a lot more to be able to scale similiarly to STS. I have no problem with this and actually thinks how they implemented it while also keeping it working well with multi-classing is brilliant. However, your HP is very similar to STS. So on act 2 elites can just casually deal 50 damage on turn 2. Your basic, starter block card blocks for 10 (to get a sense of scale). Reptomancer in this game straight up summons act 3 bosses with infinite health if you don't deal enough damage to kill the daggers. What this means is that if you draw a bad hand, it is way more punishing in this game and not blocking is usually not an option. It would be like starting with 80HP and your HP goes to 65 and then 50 in subsequent acts. I don't speak Chinese so I can't really see what they are working on.<*>The music in this game is great but it can get repetitive. Despite having around 800 hours in STS, I still have the game music running. That game does not have a lot of tracks but it's not as distracting. Despite having enjoyed the music in this game a lot in the first ~30 hours (I played it quite a bit offline), I turned it off to listen to music from the shooter game. They are adding more music to the game and I think after a while it will become a selling point.

  What I hope they will work on more and ultimately why I can't recommend the game.

  <*>The game doesn't differentiate itself enough from STS. If you have had enough of STS and looking for something new, you can find yourself getting bored of this game quite quickly. I was hoping for something completely new like some of the mods in STS but the majority of them right now are just Ironclad, Silent, and Watcher dressed up differently. Even like half (or more) of the relics and enemies are taken from STS.<*>The game also doesn't support modding and from what I have heard the developers have that on low priority. This depends a lot on the person but I believe modding is essential for the longevity of a game. Back in 2002, Blizzard released a game called WarCraft 3 and it came with an editor, fast forward to 2023, it's still being played because the editor allows you to turn that RTS into an RPG, a MOBA (that was where DotA and then League of Legends came from), a tower defense or whatever you want. Roblox is purely just a front for modding essentially and it's huge, purely made up of user generated content and nothing else. From what I have seen I would rather recommend STS at full price over this game on discount even despite all of the positive points I have brought up until now simply because it didn't just come with 4 characters but it came with 20 (that's just the ones that I play regularly) with triple the amount of relics that I can choose from. If I don't like the regular enemies I can just add more, remove them or run through 4 acts with completely new enemies. From that 800 hours I spent in STS, probably a solid 650 was with mods. I just can't see how I would recommend STS but again over STS but with modding to other people.More to come but for now I think I have gone on for too long. I will update the review again once the game is out of early access.

  This is a Touhou-themed Slay the Spire inspired roguelike deck-building game with a MTG style mana system. It's pretty fun and has a lot of replayability. The soundtrack, artwork, and animations are all great. The only main downside in my opinion is the price. This is more expensive than Slay the Spire itself. That being said, I still think it's worth it.

  Touhou: Lost Branch of Legend is a decent roguelite deckbuider that can be shortly described as Slay the Spire with MTG's colored mana. Originally I didn't like it much because of how much it has been copying StS, but with new updates it seems that it is finding it's own niche. The main thing that differs it from the other roguelite deckbuilders is the colored mana, straight out of the MTG. Each character starts with 2 colors out of 5, but can potentially gain access to the other colors as well, gaining more build options and some really powerful multicolor cards at the cost of more difficult resource management. Some of the relics also allow for multiclassing, which overall makes for great build variety - while there are fairly obvious archetypes, you may find yourself with a very unique and unexpected build. The colored mana has the annoyance of occasional hurting the pace by requiring you to 'tap' mana manually, but overall it's done well, and it's not just a gimmick for the sake of appearing different. Some of the fights, cards and artifacts have their obvious StS counterparts. This was honestly sometimes off-putting. Luckily, they seem to diverge more from this lately and come up with more unique ideas. For instance, they gave Cirno planeswalkers from MTG! Overall gameplay still has lots of similarities to modded StS, with some of the mechanics (item cards, permanent form of blocking, aforementioned multiclassing) coming straight out of the StS's mods, but the game is heading in the right direction and currently has enough uniqueness to not feel like a reskin. The balance has it's issues. Some of the regular hallway fights can be just as difficult as the elite ones. The highest difficulty is straight out unfair and can end your run very quickly if you don't get powerful cards. Compared to Slay the Spire, Normal feels like Ascension 5, Hard feels like Ascension 15, and Lunatic feels like Ascension 25. There is a reason why StS difficulty caps at A20. However, if you don't mind the occasional unfairness (or stick to Normal/Hard) and enjoy the StS formula, there's a lot to like here. Deckbuilding is fun, all characters feel distinct, and audiovisual presentation is excellent. If you've never played a roguelite deckbuilder, I recommend checking out Slay the Spire first, even if you are a Touhou fan - with mods it has more Touhou content than this game. But for the genre veterans, this is a worthy pickup with lots of promise.

  If you're stuck between buying slay the spire on sale or this game, try looking at it from this angle: You are essentially buying a very high-quality touhou-themed slay the spire mod. Everything from the visuals and music to the gameplay is fantastic. And although achievements haven't been implemented yet I am looking forward to dropping a few dozen more hours earning them once they are. There is no workshop support, however the devs are considering adding it if the game sells enough (give them your money NOW!!)((there are also mods being developed by users on their discord server)) So yeah anyway if you like rogue-like deck builders and/or touhou go ahead and give the game a try, the folks over at Alioth studio know what they're doing. (((also dropping another 100 hours once koishi is added)))
