  #1 Badass Overlord finally makes his way to steam. Makai Kingdom with some sharper pixels, cleaner font, and petta DLC. If you enjoy Disgaea or tactical RPGs then you'll be right at home. Having access to the petta mode DLC is another bonus in this version for people who previously played the PS2 version. definitely recommended if you enjoy NiS style games, or tactical RPGs

  Oh thank god it's not terrible. Now, keep in mind you're not getting much of an upgrade from the PS2 original game + some DLC content. Some bigger resolutions and some mouse/keyboard support is about all the "work" that went into this, however, if you're coming to the NIS library or lost your old copy (Like myself) this is a nice way to play the game that isn't emulating. This does give the game the caveat of this purchase being essentially redundant if you have a copy of the game and a working PS2 already, though. For those of you who HAVEN'T played this, it's essentially Disgaea with movement and abilities done with ranges rather than squares. What this means is that you're using real cones, circles, spheres, and 'x meters' for targeting and movement. Characters are created from environmental objects, as well, with them giving bonuses and detriments to stats (rocks are good for defensive characters, for example) and you can get vehicles as well. Consider it a sort of side-branch of the Disgaea mechanical formula of item dungeons and the like. The plot is fun, silly, and surprisingly heartfelt in moments like many of NIS's outings, and its VA work is as wonderful as any of them (Crispin Freeman puts in a wonderful go as main character Overlord Zetta) so if you have enjoyed previous NIS games, you'll probably like this one. It's one of my favorite PS2 games ever, and I'm incredibly happy to have it in my Steam library as well.

  I put about 1000 hours into the PS2 version years ago, and so far this version seems to be well worth the price. Think Disgaea only gridless, no geo panels, and no item world (kind of). Instead you get all kinds of wacky shenanigans on the battlefield like airdropping buildings, creating units out of household objects, driving weird vehicles, and more general variety. If you like crunchy strategy RPGs, this is well worth the price.

  At it's best, this is a classic older NIS title, now with the additional scenario that the Japanese have had for ages that never came to Western shores. At its worst, this is an older NIS title with some interesting mechanics that don't hold up too well. Weapon types are varied, but the weapons within those types are not. Reincarnation mechanics are important, yet convoluted. The spritework is old and the colors have a faded look which make everything seem older than they need to be. This is a game I'd give a slight recommend to if you're a fan of NIS games and would like to see where they came from, or if you're entrenched in the genre and want something just interesting enough to hold your attention for 20 to 40 hours. It hasn't aged well (ESPECIALLY the mechanics with vehicles) and the after game is not particularly great even by standards of older games the company has done, but the main story itself is fun enough.

  The port is sad... its my favorite NIS game. Very ugly portraits, pictures, even the text is all blurry, everything is all in 120p for crying out loud the audio is so cloudy, and the game is just not a game... its a emulated version of the psp with ps2 audio No QOL, nothing remastered, it feels like a cash grab... Look how they butchered my boy... it breaks my heart the see my Fav game murdered like this.
