  Killer instinct doesn't feel old-fashioned, yet you can't escape the great nostalgia it brings while also rivaling other contemporary versions of well-known fighting games, you could even argue that it has surpassed the effectiveness of other big names in the fighting games scene. Personally, killer instinct is that fighting game I suggest playing every time I visit, it's a great modern take on the franchise that you can hardly get tired of. First you try to break through the opponent's defenses, then you start your combo with a weak attack and then knock out a special move. You can continue to string this tune until you make a mistake, reach the limit or perform an ultimate special move. But to defeat an opponent it is not 10/10 important that you do this with ultra long combos, you can also have classic fights if you like that more, but you will still have to take into account a series of defense moves from you to block the opponents' combo sequences. In addition, battles almost always involve taking turns performing the same combo formula. It makes little difference which character you choose, since the combo system remains the same. The mutual qualities, such as that Glacius' attacks are especially useful from a distance and Sabrewulf is fast, add relatively little to this. The combo breaker, on the other hand, does add a lot of depth and challenge to the fairly simple system. This defensive move requires not only timing, but above all insight and judgment. You can only break through an opponent's combo if you know what kind of attack he is going to perform. The difference between bad, good and exceptional players mainly lies in the control of defensive moves and much less in attacks. As a result, Killer Instinct becomes mainly a disguised mind game after a few hours. The potential for a fighter in which you can invest a lot of time to manage all moves is there, but in the end the combo system has little challenge and variation. The new counter breaker adds another layer of tactics by giving smart attackers a way to fish for predictable breakers to punish them all the harder. An even smarter defender naturally sees such a trap coming, does not break, and just punishes the failed counter breaker again. An even smarter attacker, on the other hand, can intentionally step out of the combo before this happens and go for a 'reset' and then start a whole new combo to deal even more damage, in addition to the potential damage of the original combo. Thus, it is a non-stop cycle of mind games that requires both players to constantly pay attention, regardless of who is hitting who at that moment. And while the game is as combo-centric as it gets, the neutral gameplay is also very decent. Footsies are useful, anti airs are dangerous, and smart meter management can still win the match. To fill the void left by the lack of an arcade mode, Killer Instinct has a never-ending survival mode, which soon becomes the de facto way to bust up a list of CPU enemies. In addition, there is a large list of optional challenges to play, which increase in difficulty. These give you points to unlock extra goodies and can be selected directly from the main menu. If you choose to do a trial, the game will immediately place you as the corresponding character in the correct mode. I play fighting games to fight and polish my skills, so going into practice mode to learn better combos, or challenging myself by improving my best win streak with a particular character are things I do anyway. do - Killer Instinct's trials just make this process easier and more rewarding. Personally, I found this more interesting than any arcade or story mode. The original arcade versions of Killer Instinct are known for their high production values and over-the-top sense of style, and these are certainly evident in this reimagined version of the franchise. During matches, impressive particle effects, dynamic self shadowing and aggressive lighting will make the beautiful backgrounds stand out even more.

  This game is amazing, accessible, and extremely fun, but you really should pick up the Microsoft Store version, since that is where most of the community exists. Its unfortunate they weren't able to add cross-platform between the Steam version and the Microsoft Store/Xbox.

  I heard this game has an excellent training mode, and it's always been fairly well regarded. However, the price for this old of a game stayed really high so I was on the fence. Finally picked it up on sale and I would encourage anyone else on the fence to do the same. I'm happy that the announcer still goes as hard as I remember on the SNES.

  I will always love this game. I have a long history with it and 2 of my kiddos have been born and grown up since it first came out.

  Love this game and all the unique qualities. Then I learned that Spinal's theme literally had Mick Gordon use a Femur as an instrument. This game needs to be recognized more outside of the FGC.

  One of the best fighting franchises! really brought back some memories of playing the older games and really enjoyed this newer take on the old arcade classic :) plenty of hours can be sunk into this, I haven't played online much the couple of games i did I was annihilated by people far too good for me :D
