Buying the game is the real puzzle...

After 241 hours of play, I've officially unlocked every achievement, and only have a handful of things left to do in the game. Let me be absolutely honest, here. This game is a masterpiece. A literal masterpiece. If you have not played it, you're seriously missing out. This was some of the best time I've ever had playing a game. I would recommend this to everyone. Seriously. You will love it.

HITMAN 2. Some will argue it's a glorified expansion pack improving on the existing foundation that HITMAN 2016 laid out; others will say it's a new game that learns from most of its predecessor's mistakes. Whatever side of the fence you sit on: HITMAN 2 may very well be the last good classic AAA stealth series that hasn't gone the way of Deus Ex, Thief and Metal Gear Solid... and that's worth bearing in mind. Before I delve into pros and cons, and whether you should buy this game, I'd first like to talk about what's different in HITMAN 2 when compared to the previous game HITMAN 2016 (which I'll refer to as HITMAN from now on). To start with we've got 2 new mechanics - pockets of vegetation/grass on maps hide us if we're crouched and you can now escape a NPC's line of sight by walking amongst a small group of people (this system is practically identical to the one used in Hitman: Absolution). There's also a less noticeable gameplay mechanic that's been introduced: NPCs can now see you in mirrors and other reflective surfaces (this change for realism doesn't make things incredibly hard but it will keep you on your toes as bathrooms used to mean a guaranteed unnoticed kill). Next we have 3 difficulty settings - Casual, Professional and Master. Casual is a completely new difficulty setting aimed at people unfamiliar with the series and those of us who wish to muck around without having to worry about cameras or dying right away (thanks to the huge increase in damage Agent 47 can take in this difficulty mode). Professional is essentially HITMAN's Normal difficulty mode renamed, and with an extra change - cameras that spot you with a weapon or illegally trespassing will alert nearby guards. Master difficulty is HITMAN's Professional difficulty mode but slightly easier in terms of challenge - there's more enforcers, and you still only have 1 save per mission, but most items that are visibly held are no longer suspicious. In addition to this, all difficulties are available from the start and can be effortlessly selected without having to exit out and access another menu. Lastly 2 new gameplay modes have been added outside of the main campaign: Ghost Mode (a race against the clock killing targets with a silhouette of another online player who you are competing with) AND Sniper Assassin (a mode very similar to Hitman: Absolution's "Sniper Challenge" which has you sniping targets from afar and aiming to rack up a nice score - this can be played solo or with another person online). As you can see quite a bit has changed since HITMAN, for the better I believe. So let's get onto pros and cons!

    Pros

    1. The game is no longer episodic 2. 6 new maps that are of much more consistent quality than those that were offered in HITMAN and the NPCs on these maps have serviceable accents 3. New gameplay mechanics as well as new ways to play HITMAN 2 outside of the campaign 4. More unique and creative ways of killing targets 5. A better story that answers a lot of questions HITMAN raised and even explores some of Agent 47's past 6. A lot of additional free content in the works and continual live-content updates 7. The game looks breathtaking at times (try out the Whittleton Creek map and you'll see nice shades of red and yellow that just make your jaw drop) 8. The briefcase has returned - praise be!!! Sniper Rifles have been made an illegal weapon in this game, regardless of disguise, so the briefcase is now your best friend. Conceal that bad boy, go to a location, retrieve it (complete with an unpacking animation for some rifles) and deliver some Hitman justice 47-style. You can also use the briefcase to smuggle in other gear and even use it as a melee object at close and long-range. Have a rest fans of the Hitman subreddit: you did good, you did good https://steamcommunity.com/sharedfiles/filedetails/?id=1570177950

    Neutral

    1. Denuvo DRM - there is lots of debate on why it's needed and just how much impact it has on a PC but when HITMAN removed DRM years later, the effect on performance and stability was negligible at best. This has now been removed! 2. Quite a few reskins of HITMAN's items - I understand why this was done but it's a bit disappointing

    Cons

    1. 6 maps (the first is arguably more of a semi-tutorial and thus this is a smaller offering than what HITMAN gave us campaign-wise) 2. Always-online (already unlocked content can be used offline, but in order to unlock new gear you will need to be connected to the Hitman servers) 3. Performance is slightly worse when compared to HITMAN and many echo this on the forums - it's especially worse on some of the HITMAN maps that were remastered and included in HITMAN 2 as the "legacy pack" 4. Stability - I've only had 10 crashes in my 180+ hours of gametime but a lot of other users have encountered frequent crashing 5. More questionable decisions from IOI regarding time-limited content like Elusive Targets and a Christmas reskin of a map that was available permanently for HITMAN will now be time-limited for HITMAN 2 - this makes no sense! 6. Gold edition for HITMAN 2 has an unreasonable price tag IMHO https://steamcommunity.com/sharedfiles/filedetails/?id=1595641125 To conclude HITMAN 2 is what HITMAN should've been thanks to its fun levels, extra polish and for the most part: listening to its fans. I do think HITMAN 2 and the series as a whole is often underlooked, and perhaps there's some valid reasons as to why that is the case, but I think the game and IOI is worth supporting simply because it's the last of its kind in an industry where Fallout 76 and Star Wars Battlefront II are all too often the norm. It's a breath of fresh air quite frankly and the game has amazing replay value if you dig semi-linear sandbox maps and the groundhog day gameplay where you're always revisiting a level and looking for another way to approach it and pull off that perfect kill. With some more patches I believe HITMAN 2 can be a 9/10 game. A game that's incredibly hard to stop playing once you start... but right now I'll give it a 8/10. If you're a big fan of the series you should definitely consider grabbing it though.

P.S. If you have any concerns over HITMAN 2’s privacy policy I strongly recommend reading my Steam friend’s excellent review (it’s a bit direct but right on the money): https://steamcommunity.com/id/Duckilous/recommended/863550/

P.P.S. If you like these reviews and want to see more of the same, you're more than welcome to follow my curator page. If you don't like curators or groups, I completely understand (I'm not a big fan either). It's just a much easier way to find old and new reviews I've made:

I am a big Hitman Fan (only missed Codenade 47 / long indexed Germany). So all started with Hitman 2 Silent Assassin and i liked it very much. It was not a very good but a good Game with own Charme, than Contracts, Blood Money, Absolution and Hitman World of Assassination Trilogy 1 & 2 So after the weird beginning Story of WoA 1 we get now the next Pieces of the Story & Hitman 3 should be the worthy Final (PC Games 9/10 and maybe one of the best Games of (January) 2021) You get again a few big Maps again where you have a lot of Ways how to kill your Targets. Tutorial Hawkey Bay, New York Bank, Whittleton Creek, Mumbai, Santa Fortuna Columbia, Isle of Sgail, Miami & Haven Island, Maldives+ 3 Sniper Missions + all Missions Hitman 1 (included Patient Zero) +++ 100 % Steam Achievements (if you have enough Time & Endurance) +++ Hitman WoA 1 inclusiv +++ a lot of Content to play (make own Missions Targets & decide own Kill Weapon/ Accident, Highscore Hunt, 5 Levels with each a new Challenge added, a lot MIssion Challenges to complete, Secrets/ Secret Endings + 8 Trading Cards (5 would be perfect, 6 super, 7 very good) + Auto Saving (but sadly sometimes it need a lot Time till new Saving Point) + Fast Saving Option (to less Save Spots) + for Level Ups & Special Challenge you get extra Items you can choice for the Start (Katana, Shuriken, Napoleon Bombapard) some are hard to obtain + Story looks interesting (need Hitman 3) - need a lot of Space on your Harddrive (150 GB) - some Maps could have bit more interesting Spots/ unique Ways to kill/ more Story Way Options to get to the Targets Good for Hitman Fans, Achievement Hunters with enough Time/ Perseverance, Trading Card Collectors, People who like to sneak/ discover / love to find new Ways to kill Targets Like all Hitman Games i had my Fun (weird Story Puzzle Pieces) & it wasnt disappointing. Cant wait for Hitman 3. Still hope the Shop Page comes soon online. Thx 4 reading. Hope you enjoy like me. Happy Gaming. GL & HF <3

The game itself is brilliant. But the online requirement for a single-player game is just absurd. If you want to play offline or just their server is under maintenance, you cannot access any online features, the game won't even calculate how much XP you got at the end of the mission. You won't get any unlockables either, which is an important part of the game. This is not acceptable.

    TLDR:

If you enjoyed HITMAN (1), you will enjoy HITMAN 2 as it is more of the same since not much of the formula has changed. If you are completely new to HITMAN 2, it is an amazing stealth/assassination game featuring several intricate, large-space maps that are basically your playground for hired murder and shenanigans. There is a high amount of replayability in the game as there are dozens of ways to kill targets/complete each mission for you to discover every time you pick up the game. Also, you can play HITMAN (1) maps in HITMAN 2 by purchasing the legacy content package. The reason to do so over playing HITMAN (1) is that both games feature the same progress/challenge trackers but progress doesn't carry over from 1 to 2.

    GENRE:

Stealth, assassination, third person, semi-open-world-sized episodic maps

    GAMEPLAY:

You play as the world's greatest assassin, Agent 47, and take on missions in one of several large maps across the world. Missions are in the form of assassination contracts that may sometimes come with additional parameters. For each mission, you are usually assigned to kill 2 or 3 main targets, but it is your goal to complete the mission as stealthily as possible without being discovered or drawing suspicion. Maps are densely packed and relatively wide-scaled both horizontally and vertically. Locations are filled with a plethora of non-lethal items, like wrenches and crowbars, and lethal utensils, like knives and blades, lying around if you choose to use them. Maps are also filled with hundreds of NPC's that take the forms of guards, important figures, and civilians and Agent 47 can usually assume the guise of these NPC's while they are knocked out unconscious (or dead). It is to your advantage to discover disguises to wear in order to infiltrate certain sections of maps that would otherwise deem you as "trespassing" in order to access highly protected locations where targets are usually found. Your performance in missions is calculated at the end after you escape the map. You are scored higher if you perform actions stealthily such as hiding all bodies from discovery, avoiding getting your cover blown, and destroying any camera evidence that may have recorded any suspicious actions. On the flip side, your score is lowered when any event occurs where your suspicion is raised like in events described above without taking the appropriate stealthy action. Missions are not meant to be completed only once though. Challenges are an in-game achievement system that promote the game's replayability value by allowing you to discover different ways to kill the targets or interact with key figures in each map. Some might challenge you to simply find a way to poison or accidentally kill the enemy, while others challenge you by limiting your play style for a mission such as by forcing you to complete the mission while never changing disguises out of your starting suit. Thus, every time you want to replay a map, you will likely have the opportunity to find a different way to murder than you might have already found previously. If you want to take a break from main story missions, you may take part in escalation contracts, user-generated contracts, and play the Sniper Assassin game mode. Escalation contracts are challenges played in the existing maps that escalate in difficulty such as initially asking you to kill a guard and then in the next level asking you to kill two guards within 10 seconds of each other. User-generated contracts are missions designed by players allowing others to replicate their murder path and to compete for high scores on a leaderboard. Sniper Assassin is a game mode where you play as Agent 47 in a separate map with a sniper rifle in a vantage point to snipe a multitude of targets, although admittedly at the time of writing this review I have not properly played the mode yet but I look forward to trying it out.

    GRAPHICS:

HITMAN 2 is a very beautiful game and plays very smoothly throughout its entirety. Each playable map is very distinct and is home to many beautiful sights that feel like a touristic, traveling-the-world experience as you go between a sprawling racing event in sunny Miami to a secret organization's gathering at an off-the-map island in the middle of the ocean on a dark, cloudy evening. There are some slight graphical differences between HITMAN 2 and HITMAN (1) that are not entirely obvious such as subtle lighting changes, the way water physics behave, and if you look closely enough some textures are ever-so-smaller or removed from the previous game (you can find a video about these changes on YouTube). However, none of these changes take away from the overall solid presentation.

    STORY:

HITMAN 2's story sequentially follows the events of HITMAN (1)'s, although like I stated in my HITMAN (1) review, the gameplay takes precedence over the story here as well. The TLDR version is that Agent 47 and his handler, Diana Burnwood, are still on the trail of the developing criminal organization called Providence, while simultaneously on the trail of a third party codenamed as the "Shadow Client". Some backstory is revealed in between episodes about Diana and Agent 47's past, but I'll leave that for you to discover.

    STRENGTHS:

•Like HITMAN (1), the gameplay features a high amount of freedom and player choice. You can choose what you want to have in your pockets before each mission, which mission stories you want to follow in order to get closer to your targets, which disguises you want to assume, which method of assassination you want to commit to (garroting, headshot with a gun, accidental incineration, pushing off a high ledge, etc.), and how you want to flee from the map. •Each map feels very unique and different from the others. Miami is densely packed with civilians at a public racing event while Sgàil is filled with elite guards all holding dangerous automatic weapons. Whittleton Creek is a quiet, American suburb while Mumbai is a bustling, Indian slum. IO Interactive does a great job at presenting every location as it would likely feel like if you were to visit it in a real world setting. •The game is amazing for completionists and is filled with potentially hundreds of hours of content. There is so much replayability value found in HITMAN 2 as you can tackle challenges and replay missions under different circumstances every time you play. Plus, you get rewarded in completing challenges by unlocking new tools to use at your disposal such as different map starting locations, different utensils like lockpicks and explosives, and sometimes even new suits for 47.

    WEAKNESSES:

•EDIT: Previously, this section listed speculation that HITMAN 2 progress would not carry over into HITMAN 3. You CAN, but be sure to do some research about whether or not Epic has allowed the transfer of progress from Steam to Epic copies since 3 is in Epic exclusivity for like a year.

    NUMERIC SCORE (if you care):

9.5/10 The HITMAN games are my go-to for scratching my semi-open-world stealth genre itch. HITMAN 2 is an easy buy if you fancy slaving away hundreds of hours finding new ways to commit murder as the cold and calculating bald man known as Agent 47. Checkbox reviews are lazy copy & paste bullsh*t. ASCII art reviews tell you nothing. "Let's be honest, I only wrote this review for awards" is a waste of everyone's time. If you are interested in genuine & detailed game reviews, feel free to check out my others here (or don't, I don't tell you what to do).

Yes, you can indeed hit a man. You can also hit 2 men. In fact, you can hit multiple men, and some women too. I don't think you can hit children though, I couldn't find any.
