Time for a trip to Mexico to become a luchador, save El Presidente’s daughter and become a legendary hero in Guacamelee! Super Turbo Championship Edition.
The Good:
Solid game all around. Nice treat having a Mexican setting to the game. Alright, let’s get the obvious out of the way, this is an outstanding game. The gameplay is fluid, the soundtrack is catchy & memorable, the graphics are nice to look at (save for the risk of Epilepsy seizures), and the game’s price tag is good. Another thing that should be noted is the fact that I can’t really recall another good game that had Mexican culture as it’s main premise. Nothing from what I saw looked out of place or out of line, and this game has lots of references, whether it’s from the visuals, like the various Nintendo items you’ll notice through your adventures, or the dialogue, like when you clear one area only to be greeted with the famous line “Your princess is in another castle.”
The Bad:
No significant difference between Normal & Hard modes. Playing through both difficulty modes, I was rather disappointed by the lack of differences between the two. The enemies & bosses barely showed any difference, save for maybe more health; the checkpoints for the most part wasn’t changed or shortened; and not even the level design showed any changes. In general, hard mode is not hard.
The Ugly:
Missed potential for online co-op play. Really, there wasn’t much that I could think of in terms of any other negatives for this game. The only other thing that I could think of, or in this case, looking at the other reviews done by the steam community, was noticing a lack of online co-op play. Guacamelee! has had 2 additional versions of the game in Gold and Super Turbo Championship Editions and all of them, including the original, have a co-op option available. The latter version was a missed opportunity to try and make co-op gameplay available online. Guacamelee! is a superb game, one that should be in anyone’s game collection. There’s little problems with the game itself that it gave me some difficulty in getting this review complete, but it’s done now and it gets an easy recommendation from me. Guacamelee Gold was one of my favorite pick ups here and I'm glad they did not take long to bring the update here. This game is not only a worthy update but a good starting point for someone who has never played Guacameelee before. I know some people are upset about having to pay for an update but they packed a lot into this. 2 extra levels along with new secrets, intensio mode and my personal favorite a new set of Steam Trading Cards!! The only negative I can say is my hands still haven't recovered from all the abuse I put them through last time to get 100% on the achievements. But what's a little carpal tunnel to enjoy more of this great universe.

Hmm.. Naturally when you're looking to buy a game, you want to get the latest and greatest version. It should have all the extra content, bug-fixes, and so on. However, the possibility exists that the newest verson could be inferior in some ways. Game-design is a constant and always finicky, and nobody ever seems to be satisfied with its results. So things get changed, and changed again, sometimes they're even changed back to their original state. It's a constantly confusing nightmare, and for what? In the end it all comes down to preference. Forgive me, I love to ramble. STCE is on paper*, the superior version of Guacamelee! Let's look at some of the facts: Two brand-new areas to explore! A new boss-fight! Intenso! Multiple save-slots! New enemies! Every foe has a visible health-meter! etc! If you're hankering for more Guacamelee, then definitely grab this! The new areas are great. They make the world a bit richer, and are fleshed out with plenty of secrets and fighting/platforming to be had. I also like the little changes such as costumes being unlocked via silver coins. The biggest deal is that the controller-issue I had with Guaca-Gold is fixed, making this by default the superior version for me. BUT! STCE is a different game, and it can be considered inferior in a way. The controversial addition is Intenso! It's the "shock gloves"** of Guacamelee. Once you fill a meter you can become a superpowered luchadore by pressing L3+R3. Once you purchase all of the upgrades you're practically invincible. Guaca-Gold wasn't a difficult game, so having the ability to cheese the rare moments of challenge makes things a bit too easy. Keep in mind that this ability is optional. Most of the time I forgot I even had it. The new enemies are quaint. For the most part they're reskins that can move faster, hit (much) harder, and will sometimes teleport to get out of danger. Aside from nega-chupacabras doing tons of damage with their sword-stab, they're not a threat. There are also some flying fish in one of the new areas. They remind me of enemies from the Saturn version of Symphony of the Night. They only showed up in one area, and behaved in a similar manner. If it's a reference, then I applaud drinkbox for their attention to obscurity. If you haven't played Guacamelee before, IMO it's best to go straight to this version. It's more convenient, since the original version doesn't have multiple save-slots. Having the most content is a definite plus as well. You might feel the urge to go back to Guaca-Gold for its original "true" level of difficulty but eh...I wouldn't recommend it. Most of Guacamelee's challenge is in a couple of boss-fights, and the optional areas like El Infierno. For the most part you're the awesome skull-cracking luchadore on a fun adventure. If you want a difficult Metroidvania, consider Valdis Story: Abyssal City (also on Steam). Mostly though I'm just really happy and relieved that the controller issue I had with Guaca-Gold is fixed in this game. It's the main reason I'll probably never go back to the earlier version (though I have a fair number of achievements I should get). *What is it with "on paper"? I use that phrase way too often. **The gloves from Batman: Arkham Origins. Punch through any defense, combo count boost, makes things so easy.

You can Suplex a Chicken 11/10 No but to put on my Serious reviewer voice, this is the Improved version of Guacamelee, which comes with nicer looking effects for enemies, your special attacks cause camera shake etc and an "Intenso mode" which makes you super powered for a short time, plus comes with brand new content, plus a new boss (or should I say Trio of bosses), it is a great little upgrade to an already amazing Metroidvania brawler. plus its also a great deal at 66% off for those who owned the other version of Guacamelee, Downside however is that because it is a new game rather than an expansion/patch for the original version, you will need to start again from the start, but its fun seeing what new additions/Graphics they added in this version. p.s. the screens when you get powerups are no longer Seizure Inducing, so you wont be blinded by flashy colours when playing in the dark.

This is basically the same game as Guacamelee Gold, except with a bit of added fluff. Please do not support dishonest business practices and just skip this game altogether. Having to rebuy the game again without even the slightest discount is in no way justifiable. The technical aspects aren't much to look at either, the game either has huge input lag or A LOT of screen tearing, depending on your VSync settings. Pick your poison. This game also still does not support online coop, despite the developer saying in the original game that he wanted to implement it, but did not have the time. Yet they apparently had enough time to re-release the same game with a few added skins and a few more enemies? Right... I'd say vote with your wallet. The developers do not deserve your money.

Guacamelee! Super Turbo Championship Edition is an upgraded version of Guacamelee, a metroidvania game inspired by Mexican culture. I already wrote a review for the original version, but this one deserves a review as well. The story centers on Juan Aguacate, an agave farmer living in the outskirts of Pueblucho, a small Mexican town. During one Day of the Dead, an evil spirit who goes by the name of Carlos Calaca has a plan in mind for the worlds of the living and the dead. He kidnaps El Presidente's daughter (Juan's childhood friend and love interest), and kills Juan, who is then revived by a mythical Luchador mask. Juan then embarks on a quest across the worlds of the living and the dead in order to stop Calaca's plan, coming across many interesting characters along the way. The dialogue is pretty good, going from serious "we need to save the world" moments, to humorous jokes about the different characters, which still work very well. The gameplay, like I mentioned in the opening paragraph, is that of a metroidvania platformer, with some combat mixed in. You start the game with a basic punch combo, and as you progress through the level you gain new moves as well as abilities, which then open up alternate paths in previous levels, leading you to new areas, or some hidden treasure. There's also a couple of "hub" levels, where you can get a few sidequests and also complete some bonus challenges. You can also unlock upgrades and costumes (which specific bonuses) using in-game currency, which is obtained when killing enemies. Talking about the enemies, there's a wide variety of them, from regular melee mooks, to flying enemies or giant, heavy hitting enemies. Going into level design, it's pretty good. Plenty of large spaces to explore, with new areas that become available as you gain new abilities, which means you'll be revisiting areas all the time without feeling like they're repeating content. There's almost always something new to discover when the story sends you back to an already visited area. Also, the game uses a dual-world mechanic, with almost all levels having a World of the Living and World of the Dead version, and each version has its own unique aesthetic design; while the World of the Living is bright and colourful, the World of the Dead is dark and somber. The soundtrack is top-notch. I'd say it's some kind of electro-mexican mix, and it fits the game very well. Not only that, but there's practically two versions of each song, since both worlds use their own music. While they share some similarities, there's differences in tone for the tracks of the World of the Living and the World of the Dead. Now let's talk about the Super Turbo Championship Edition proper, in comparison to the Gold Edition. While the Gold Edition was already a pretty good game, the STCE (I'm not typing the full title again) adds two brand new areas to explore, several new enemy types, and a new boss, plus a couple of new abilities, including the Intenso mode, which allows you to tear through enemies with ease, plus some changes here and there. All in all, some pretty good content. So, do I recommend Guacamelee! Super Turbo Championship Edition? Of course I do, it's a fantastic game, and if you enjoy metroidvanias, you'll really enjoy this one!

What is "Guacamelee! Super Turbo Championship Edition" ("Guacamelee")? First of all, it is some years since I played this (in late 2014). Guacamelee is a Metroidvania game where you play a guy who is possessed by the spirit of a Luchador (Mexican wrestler) and must defeat enemies, overcome challenges, all the while learning new moves, finding some secrets, etc. in typical Metroidvania style. Gameplay The gameplay is very smooth, the challenging but never unfair difficulty makes it able to retry rooms without any issues - there is no death penalty other than having to restart the current room. This formula that is also used in Super Meat Boy etc. - getting right back into the game after failure - makes this game enjoyable until the end. You explore a world full of Mexican style, including some bonus levels in this version. Every now and then you meet some bosses to overcome, you can explore a small Mexican village, and with your powers gained throughout the game you defeat countless enemies, culminating in an optional (but necessary for achievements) pit of challenges. At the end of the game you will be the best Luchador in all of Mexico, but is this enough to break free of your destiny? Minor spoiler: You can switch between the world of the living and the dead, reminiscent of the both greatest Zelda classics A Link to the Past and Majora's Mask, but you switch at any time - after having gained that power. Story The story is okay, but forgettable. If I remember it correctly, you die at the beginning and then try to resurrect. Or something like that. And some woman is also involved that you must rescue, I think. Or maybe just some chicken. Not sure anymore. However, the characters are written in a fun style, and especially the chickens who teach you new moves are worth a laugh or two. Controls A controller is recommended, but with it controls are absolutely great. Everything is easily accessible except one special move that you use maybe once or twice in the game where you must press the joystick (you have to know this is even possible on the XBOX controller). I think it was used only once to solve a puzzle. Other than that, everything feels great. You can save at any point. The negative point is that I think there is only one savegame. Music Are you even asking? The soundtrack is great, and I think I had also reviewed it. So read that review, or just listen to it on Youtube. Recommended: If you did not understand it by now, this is one of the best games I have ever played. It is short, only 12 hours long maybe, but every minute of it is enjoyable. Currently it is on sale, so grab it! Or wait for a better sale, as 8.39€ is a bit much possibly. But if you ever get it for under 5 Euro, it is a must-buy and must-play! And please get all achievements, there is nothing missable, I think. Or maybe you can miss something by entering the final boss without having gotten everything, but then that would be entirely your fault. And an opportunity to play that great game once more. ;-)

Get gold edition. Intenso literally breaks the fucking game making it a cake walk. >Break any shield with ONE punch >Recharge Health Amongst other things. End game becomes less fun and more tedious Also, Developers haven't realased Mod Assests so creators can edit the Intenso character sprite. So, thats virtually dead. Also, the implemented skins (Which they charged console users for), are hilariously lazy. Recylcing the same sound effects for every character except the female one. Buy Gold.

A solid platformer filled with puns and references to well-known games. Fans of beat 'em ups won't be disappointed being able to violently thrash enemies into each other with strings of combos. The game just succeeds on its own merits ... even as something greater than homage. http://steamcommunity.com/sharedfiles/filedetails/?id=471115589 http://steamcommunity.com/sharedfiles/filedetails/?id=473706473 Unlocked all achievements!
