  [u]Inunaki Tunnel | 犬鳴トンネル[/u] is a brief Japanese psychological horror game. It has a strong sense of place that grounds the player’s fear into a tangible and realistic environment. It is based on a real place located in the Miyawaka town, Fukuoka Prefecture, Japan. Translating literally to “the howling dog tunnel,” the site is infamous for people being killed or burned alive. Similar to the Aokigahara, or the suicide forest in Japan, the Inunaki Tunnel oozes a certain spiritual decadence only visible to those who dare trespass. Here, we see developer Chilla’s Art continue their well-executed tradition of adopting a lo-fi VHS aesthetic. The POV of our female lead is an old camera plagued with film grain and a dim flashlight. The camera emulates the phosphor screen trail and bleeding, VHS tape noise, interlacing, and jitter in the analog video signal. This found footage effect begets a sense of photo-realism and immersion that intensifies the horror experience. It also creates a sense of intimacy that facilitates player empathy with the protagonist, since there is one less layer between what the player character experiences and what the player experiences. The gameplay is mostly comprised of being a walking simulator and puzzle-solving with hints of Japanese culture. You also explore different authentic Japanese locales, collect and use items and read notes left behind by lost souls. In Inunaki Tunnel | 犬鳴トンネル there is always a psychological effect of being watched. A distant howl, sudden footsteps around you, and shadowy silhouettes all flag your imagination for potential threats constantly. This ever-present sense of “flight” over “fight” transcends levels, slowly creating a powerful sense of hopelessness and fright throughout the game. I think what other game developers can learn from Chilla’s Art is that style and substance can cooperate to make a thrilling, albeit brief (it can be completed in 30 to 60 minutes depending on your playstyle), horror game. By choosing a nostalgic style and combining it with authentic locations based on local horror films and ghost stories, you can create a game with a strong sense of place that grounds the player’s fear into a realistic environment filled with uncertainty and dread.

  Though there's relatively little coverage of the Inunaki Tunnel outside of Japan and Japanese vloggers, it is indeed aplace of terror in the real world. The location of the tunnel is within the Inunaki Mountain Pass, near Kuyama-cho, Miyawaka-shi, Fukuoka Prefecture 811-2501, and it's claimed to be one of the three most haunted locations in Japan; alongside its equally as terrifying cousin, Aokigahara, better known as the Suicide Forest. Stories of murders and body burnings have pervaded the tunnel since the late 1980's, and eventually the opening was closed off with giant cinder blocks to prevent trespassing and even more brutal crimes. All of the aforementioned lore that was just fed to you ends up becoming irrelevant when you get into the actual game itself since there's not much plot to work with. The developer did a good job recreating what little parts of the tunnel are widely known, but other than that this release tends to just be a dime-a-dozen horror trek. You saunter through long corridors of nothingness, in near total darkness that's an actual headache to see through, while solving a few puzzles that are only made difficult by your hindered sight. The lo-fi VHS aesthetic is a nice touch, it's a visually striking point that may end up getting some buyers to throw this game in their carts or on their wishlists, but it's a hard filter to work with when the graphics are just so dreadfully dim. There's a gamma slider, but that's gamma, not brightness; some developers seem to be unable to tell the difference. Inunaki Tunnel has three endings in total; one good, one bad, one special. They're all exceedingly short, much like the journey itself which clocks in at around 45-60 minutes for the first playthrough. There are no save states, so if you're wanting to experience each ending you'll have to replay the game three times; something that I personally wasn't willing to do. There's no ambience, no atmosphere, no scares, no danger, and no audio stimulation besides some flowing water and footsteps. In short, there's nothing here that actually makes this a horror game. This release is yet another bland experience, made all the worse by not being able to see at all; a fear tactic that indie developers have been known to exploit in lieu of putting any actual tension in their games. It's worth a few cents at best, but no more.   This is a game to experience because it builds the suspense slowly to the point that you want to know more about what's going on. Another master piece from Chilla's Art. 100% recommended, great job!

  This is a good and scary little game! Reminds me of those obscure Japanese horror short films you sometimes stumble upon on the web. Has a surprising amount of depth, secrets, and optional exploration. The devs used the darkness/silence to craft a truly chilling atmosphere. I go the secret ending on my first playthrough; looking forward to finding the others!

  My play time is longer because I idled quite a bit. The game is beautifully done, and once again Chilla does not disappoint. The use of atmosphere, along with ambient sounds make it quite creepy. I definitely recommend this game!
