Mutant scum never learn! Blaster Master Zero makes its Steam debut!

Blaster Master Zero is a 8-bit style top-down & sideview 2D action-adventure game that hearkens back to the golden age of the NES.

This game was created using the original 1988 title "Blaster Master" from Sunsoft as a base, with the addition of new areas and bosses, new gameplay elements such as extra sub-weapons, improved gameplay, a more robust scenario, refined and expanded exploration mechanics, and more.

・On the sideview maps, take control of the battle tank SOPHIA III and explore your surroundings as you search for the entrance to the dungeon where the area's boss lurks.

・Once you find a dungeon entrance, exit SOPHIA III and make your way inside as the hero Jason and take on the mutants that dwell within in top-down mode.

・Defeat the mid-bosses and area bosses to acquire new items, sub-weapons, upgrades to SOPHIA III and Jason's equipment, and new abilities and maneuvers that allow SOPHIA III to access new areas.

・Player 2 can provide support for Player 1 as they traverse through the game in the co-op multiplayer mode.

Extremely satisfied. I'm over 40. I played Blaster Master on Nintendo in the 80's. This was one of my favorite games. Until yesterday, I didn't know there was a Blaster Master refresh available. I bought both 1 and 2 as soon as I found them in a Steam sale. This is an excellent remake and refresh of the original Blaster Master. It's not the same, but the idea is. Blaster Master Zero is perfect for what it is supposed to be. Mostly, you play in a 2d platforming environment, driving a sport tank vehicle with weapons and abilities. You can, and must, leave the vehicle, as a person, with weapons and abilities, to navigate mazes and defeat bosses. Weapon and ability upgrades are free in the game and are required to achieve to move on to additional levels. This is a great game. One of my best Steam purchases. Thank you Developers! Big fan.

I am a simple man. I see Blaster Master and I buy it. I fired it up, heard the level 1 music and was immediately sent back to 1989. If you will excuse me, I am going to play more of this game.

Around 1990, having learned of Blaster Master from a spiral-bound strategy guide (those few pages of text and fuzzy CRT photos instantly seeded fantasies of revolutionary gameplay and SF adventure starring me), I obtained one of my life's most coveted games with a straight-A report card. The lush 8-bit biomes, biomechanical mutants, and smoothly animated pink supertank did not disappoint, though limited continues (four to be precise) soon threw water on my once-heated love affair . . . and I've not played it seriously since then, being incurably allergic to long games with finite lives. It was a rough game for anyone (and eight-year-olds are fickle anyway), so I simply let my hungry ghost focus shift to some new thing. It always stuck with me, though, how immediately the game conjured such a rich vibe of sweeping adventure. That impression remained a constant through all my tentative assays, separated by stretches of years. This new entry, which replaces the earthier tones of the original with an equally pleasing palette of bright colors (the pink tank remains the same), does indeed replicate the instantaneous adventure of the old, and it does so with the same frequent changes in scale: tricked-out supertank in big, woolly world ejects tiny to-scale pilot with limited sidescrolling mobility to accentuate vastness and helplessness . . . but before he becomes too abstract a cipher, little Jason enters top-down dungeons as a large and capable sprite with personality and battle options galore . . . then later on, when he reemerges, you're quickly reminded of how huge that overworld is for him (and through him, for you). I love that three-pronged approach so much! I'll freely admit it does about as much for me today as it did then, helped along as it is by a more robust save-the-world story I became an immediate fan of. But keep in mind this tale does take an unfortunate hit from an awkward translation. What was that again, Eve? You . . . what? Could you clarify that for me, dear? Do what, now? What do you know! I can actually beat this one! It's just too bad I could probably do it with my left foot working the controller and blindfolded. Zero is every bit as easy as the original is brutally hard, which I think is quite the pity -- but at least the game's variety and driving sense of scale-based adventure are there to compensate for this flaw. I've beaten it twice now, the second time with even greater relish -- and I'm sure I will again, if that's any indication of how fun it is. So thank you, Inti Creates, for giving new life and accessibility to a great old game that couldn't stop punching below the belt. I love your reimagining, warts and all, and the sequel is even better!

The first playthrough is one of the best neo-retro action game experiences on the market. The merging of 2D Action/Platforming and Top Down Action works seamlessly and is a joy to play. Highly recommend playing this game to everyone. Do not go for 100% achievements in Blaster Master Zero. The final achievement, Destroyer, requires you to beat the game on Destroyer mode, which ramps the difficulty up to such a considerable degree that it's borderline unplayable. This is easily one of my proudest completions just for how difficult Destroyer was alone, but it was not worth it.

A basic "reconstruction" of the original Blaster Master with more solid emphasis on exploration, as well as extra weapons for SOPHIA; the ability to use characters other than Jason (that play true to their characters!) in the EXTRA mode; and a 'true ending' for completionists. Still has a slight edge of difficulty compared to the original, but the boss tricks won't work here -- the boss designs are more diverse and there's even battles while you're inside SOPHIA, which breaks up the "enter dungeon, kill boss, get progress item" monotony. Oh, and did I say extra weapons? Not only do you have side weapons, you have 'charge weapons' you can use that accompanies the standard shot. Jason's gun upgrades are also selectable by level, and certain levels are very useful -- part of the exploration. Jump in and buckle up. This is the re-imagining you've been looking for. (Also, the sequel is very good and can play standalone as well -- perhaps grab that too!)

INTI CREATES revives the Blaster Master franchise with a reimagining/reboot of the series done right. Staying true to the series (with plenty of callbacks and clever nods to past entries), while bettering and expanding things on every front, this is INTI CREATES at the top of their game, and a true love letter to this "cult" franchise. This is one heck of a metroidvania, that deserves to be in the collection of every fan of the genre. I really can't recommend this game enough!

This year Im 35, played like a 12 year old, when was the last time a game glued you to the screen from morning til midnight? After many failed 3D adoption in the 00s, then the experimental indie of the 10s, classic gaming has finally back on track again. 2D format is being re-evaluated and appreciated for a new trend in low budget devs. Im very happy for the era of 'ne0 classic', I cant believe I would relive these experiences in this life time. I highly recommend this and many other games of the same class such as Axiom.

Having played the NES original a lot growing up, I jumped on this one when it became available, and so far my initial impression of this version is quite good. It's an "enhanced/remastered" version of the original that looks like it may have if this were made for the Nintendo DS or maybe even Super NES, with improved graphics and audio (same music as the original), and also adding in some cutscenes and other gameplay tweaks. If you are willing to spend a few bucks there are also more options you can buy. The only thing right now I'd like to see added at some point is the NES original, maybe as a future DLC. Although the gameplay is a little complex at first while you try to figure out what every button does and how to switch weapons, it's easy to pick up and play and there is a cool co-op mode for 2 players. If you liked the NES original this is a remake that is worth buying, but on its own this is also a solid retro platformer/action game. Definitely off to a good start.

Hello friends, I just played this game quite fast. Check my hours if you do not believe me. That is more than enough time to review this great game. First, if you ever played any of the earlier versions of the blaster master series, this stays true to the series. I do believe that zero is a re-imagined remake of the original version of the game, including the little frog jumping down a hole. Anyways, about the game itself, it keeps the old style graphics like the old 8-bit games. Without ruining the game's storyline too much, you basically do what you did on other blaster master games. Find a walk in dungeon, go in on foot, beat the boss inside it, and continue on. Anyways, my pro/con list: PROS: -A great re-imagining of a classic series game. -Much fun to explore and find upgrades. -Multiple endings. -Multiplayer mode and battle mode (possibly works with remote play together). CONS: -Some people maybe turned off by how the graphics use old style look. -The storyline is about the same as other games in the series. Anyways, I recommend it for it is quite fun to play and enjoyable in this age of over the top graphics. If not a fan of the asthetic look of 8-bit gaming, please feel free to move on.
