TL;DR In my opinion, this is an amazing visual novel for sci-fi/cyberpunk enjoyers - the overall quality of the product, the attention to detail and the worldbuilding are some of the best out there (also, the soundtrack is banger). The sheer amount of content that one gets for the price makes it good value for money. My thoughts: Going into it, I didn’t know much about Baldr Sky. I decided to read it on a whim and oh boy, was I immediately hooked by the setting. So, here I am, 146 hours later, spilling my thoughts out about this piece of art. The most polarising aspect of this VN will most likely be the fact that this is very much a hybrid VN/RPG. The RPG part plays a big, unskippable part of the VN. I haven’t read a VN that had actual gameplay in the way that Baldr Sky does, but I genuinely enjoyed it. I tested out all of the difficulties and here are my thoughts on them: Very Easy and Easy should allow virtually anyone to beat the gameplay parts without any difficulty. Normal offers a bit of a challenge but nothing too crazy. Hard and Very Hard are meant for players who are genuinely interested in the RPG aspect of the game and want to challenge themselves. Make no mistakes, the RPG part of the VN isn’t just something that was slapped together overnight. It is a fully developed system that allows different types of playstyles, much like any other RPG of this type. The story…is enjoyable. I enjoyed the different routes, but more than the story, I enjoyed the worldbuilding. I found the worldbuilding phenomenal and it really lets you immerse yourself while reading, to the point where I feel that my overall impression of the story would have been worse without it. As far as the story itself goes, I found that the pacing wasn’t the best. Some routes offered little to no plot development, whilst others moved the plot at breakneck speed. There is some repetition between some (not all) routes, though it’s not nearly as bad as some comments make it out to be. For example, Dive 1, Route 1 is your first route. Dive 1, Route 2 is identical to Route 1 until Chapter 4 (out of 14 Chapters) and then it goes its own way. You do have an option to automatically skip the already read text that’s identical, meaning you can get past the repetitive parts quickly. Dive 1, Route 3 and Dive 2, Route 1 are the biggest offenders of repetition as their stories are mirrors of each other, though both contribute to the overall plot in a different way. Dive 2, Route 2 and Dive 2, Route 3 are different from the previous routes. I will add one disclaimer - the ‘skip previously read text’ option doesn’t always work as intended. It will only skip if the whole scene that you are reading is word for word the same as you read it before. If there’s one new sentence or a word got changed in a sentence, it will not automatically skip (not even the parts that you have already read). This can be annoying for some, but it didn’t really bother me. You can still manually skip the read parts. Overall though, I did enjoy the story. Next, let's talk about the H scenes: Are they mandatory in order to fully understand the story? No. Do some of the H scenes add a bit of humanity to the characters, making them more fleshed out? Yes. Are some of the H scenes there purely for fan service with no additional context behind them? Yes. Are some of the H completely unnecessary? Yes. I personally read the VN uncensored. As a general rule, I dislike any form of censorship in art. My personal belief on whether it was necessary or not is irrelevant, because it’s not my work. I want to experience art as the creator intended for it to be experienced, whatever the reason behind it is. That’s pretty much it from me. This is definitely a VN that’s pretty high up on my list, next to Muv-Luv, FSN, Muramasa and the Science Adventure series. I would wholeheartedly recommend it to anyone who enjoys sci-fi/cyberpunk stories, and the amount of content that one can get for this price, puts a lot of ‘AAA Games’ to shame. If you do decide to dive into this VN, happy reading!

I love Baldr Sky. Now that it's over I feel like I have to say goodbye to old friends. It has been a long time since a game has made me feel this way. It has also been a long time since a game has made me feel so profoundly heroic; it was a nice feeling while it lasted. If you are at all a fan of the visual novel genre then I'm sure there's something here for you to enjoy. Since I loved Baldr Sky so much I decided to see what other games GIGA had created but was sad to discover that they're going out of business. With GIGA's closing I doubt there will be any further English translations of the Baldr titles, which is unfortunate. I would have, at the least, liked to play an English-translated version of Baldr Sky DiveX, the game which contains the story of Rain and Kou during their mercenary years together. But I don't think that's going to happen, not unless GIGA sells the license to the Baldr series to another company and they decide to do it themselves. It does seem that GIGA is making available one last publication of all the Baldr games under the title Baldr Masterpiece Chronicle. This collection contains all of the Baldr games updated to run on Windows 10 without issue. It's currently available on Amazon Japan with shipping to the United States being provided: https://www.amazon.co.jp/-/en/dp/B0BN3CS26N/ It's available for pre-order for now but once GIGA closes shop in March of 2023 they won't be providing any further copies of it, or any of their other games for that matter. Unfortunately the limit of my Japanese understanding puts me on the level of a two year old Japanese child, which is certainly not sufficient enough to thoroughly enjoy a purely Japanese work. However, I'm providing the link for any of you out there who may be interested as there's a limited window of opportunity here to own a copy of the entire series.

I'm finally done with Baldr Sky I can proudly say this is one of the best VN I've ever read so far. It is thought-provoking to read something written in 2009 yet has many modern real-life implications such as the advancement of AI and quantum computing. - Now for the plot and dramas = 10/10 You might think that enforced playing order is cumbersome but I assure you that it was planned all along and have a very satisfying conclusion at the end. The emotional value brought by ALL of its endings is truly well written even when it's supposedly the "Bad" ending but this is why I really like Baldr Sky. Sure they are not afraid to get edgy but the core main story at the end is still a wholesome one and that's a hard thing to attain nowadays. The true ending makes me feel like all of my hard work is finally paying off. The final battle of the final route is easily the best ending out of all endings I've encountered in my experience reading VNs since 2012. - Now onto the gameplay = 8.5/10 Considering this was made in 2009, it was top-notch. My only problem with the gameplay is the automatic lock-on system which could mess up your play if you focused too much on long-range weapons. But this is not that big of a problem if you're a melee fighter like me who likes to just punch the hell out of all the enemy. They even have Rider Kick as a finisher move now that's a CHAD move. One thing to note is that long-range weapons need investments. At level 1 and 2, they won't give you any significant damage (or at all) but if you're patient enough to get them into level 3, they will destroy all of the obstacles in-game (saves from some bosses). - Now onto music = 10/10 Easily one of the best things ever released. The design is also superb, the developers can accurately put the perfect song for each occasion. You don't know how many times I get encouraged by the music whenever I fight through the game. - Now onto arts = objectively, 8.5/10 but personally 100/10 Kikuuchi Seiji's art is, what you can say as intriguing. Proportionally speaking it is kind of a mess and sometimes the character has somewhat different faces and body build than the ones we are familiar with. BUT, I LOVE IT SO MUCH LOL. It is so distinctive from other VN's character designs that I fell in love with the art. The mecha design is also nice because they're going with the real robot aesthetic and it is truly fitting for a hard sci-fi theme. - Miscellaneous One thing that I truly love but cannot get the category for is the amount of research the developer and writer do to make Baldr Sky. If you look up all the terms spat out in this VN, you will fall into a very deep rabbit hole of physics and computer science discussion. All the terms are used correctly with their real-world usage and it all made sense. Overall Easily a 10/10 It's a VN that everyone must, at least, experience once in their lifetime. There are still 2 months before Giga closes for goods, I truly recommend this to everyone whether you like VN/sci-fi/mecha or not. Thank you for reading my reviews.

Giga is bankrupt and gone, so get any Giga games on the store if you are interested in their work, who knows when they are getting removed on Steam. The Steam version of Baldr Sky consists of 2 games in 1 game, Baldr Sky Dive 1 “Lost Memory” and Baldr Sky Dive 2 “RECORDARE”. It is developed by Giga, one of the older visual novel developers under TGL(Technical Group Laboratory) and unlike your usual visual novel title where you just read and make choices to enter a specific character route, Baldr Sky is very different and unique. Baldr Sky has mecha, yeah robots, something I am not really a big fan of but still ok with. With mechas being part of the story, you would expect to read about mechas combat with descriptive words, but no, that's not what Baldr Sky offers you. Instead, you get to pilot a mecha, you will learn to control your mecha with detailed tutorials in-game. Baldr Sky combat system can be very fun and hard to master, if you are like me who can’t play games that require you to do combos/memorizing the combos, you can just play it with the "Very Easy” difficulty. Quite unique, new and interactive gameplay that I’ve experienced so far compared to all visual novels I’d read. Baldr Sky talks about how Kadokura Kou, our mc who lost his memory during a mission and is trying to find his lost memories while unfolding the truth behind a sad catastrophe that happened years ago. 6 heroines' routes can be read which are: Kirishima Rain, Kou’s subordinate Wakakusa Nanoha, Kou’s childhood friend Nagisa Chinatsu, Kou’s classmate Nishino Aki, Kou’s cousin Minazuki Makoto, Kou’s kouhai Minazuki Sora, Makoto’s sister After finishing all 6 of them, you will have access to the True route. You have to follow all these specific orders of route to understand the story. Not like you can pick which route to read anyways, just follow the guide. As a 2009 visual novel, the art is surprisingly well-drawn, CGs/VAs/BGMs are all really well done and fit into the story itself. Major plus point to an immersive and engaging story, crazy worldbuilding. No more wimpy weak as hell protagonist, introducing a one hell of a badas* protagonist. Definitely a high tier classic visual novel out there. Though, it can be annoying from time to time. When you are reading a climax and you are so focused, wanting to know what’s going on, boom, you are forced to engage in a battle. It's just such a big turn off, especially on Route 6. There are also a bunch of repetitive scripts in every heroine's route but I understand why they did that. For instance, In Dive 2 they force you to read Reminiscence before moving to the 5th route, where 80% of the plots were being told during 1st-4th routes. There are crucial plots, but very little and most of them are at the end of Reminiscence which you definitely should not miss out. Reading Baldr Sky requires a smart brain with a higher logical thinking level and a lot of patience. That’s because there are many factions related to certain characters, the motives of each faction etc which can be a bit complicated and they take some time to be explained throughout the story. But the most complicated one out of all, are the laws of physics that were being brought into the story’s settings. So, if you are a big sci-fi fan, or up for some plot twists, screwed up story, then I highly recommend you to get this game, it will be worth every single penny and time you spent.

Baldr Sky is a Hybrid game, combining an awesome Cyberpunk Visual Novel with an awesome Mech action/RPG. One caveat: The game is LESS good than the sum of its parts, in my opinion. Also plenty of "What the heck Japan?" cringe in the romance department be warned. Synopsis: You play as a guy who just got his brain half-fried during a hack-gone-wrong. If you're not familiar with the cyberpunk genre, our heroes connect their brains to computers and "dive" into virtual worlds to fight on the internet(in this case using virtual giant robots). Your only living subordinate rescues you before learning that the last thing you can remember was starting college a few years ago, and you set about to learn why you became a mercenary when you always hated them as a kid. Over the course of a story about chasing dangerous terrorists who may be trying to use nanomachines to destroy humanity, flashbacks fill in the gaps of your lost memories to help you understand why this job is personal and how your college anime harem all fit into the puzzle. Along the way you'll have to battle against viruses and other Mech-hackers(Known as Cyber Officers) to stay alive in a much more grim and dark world than the one from your memories. Other major plot elements include AI, Bio computers, mind uploading, cybernetics, genetic engineering... The number of cool cyberpunk tropes this game hits in its story is pretty awesome. Before I go on to my gripes, shout-out to the boss battles and group fights. Every other major character with a mech has a distinct fighting style and weapon loadout, and many of them you get to fight both alongside and against in various story routes. Your most common ally is your merc partner whose entire gimmick is battlefield control for example, and after fighting alongside her so much when it was time for a training match AGAINST her I knew exactly what to be aware of. Felt really great. The issue with the Mech Action RPG is that all battles are story battles broken up by long scenes and the game has some grindy mechanics but the only ways to grind are to finish the entire game and unlock scene select, or new game plus a route you've already completed so you can fast forward or skip scenes that aren't new to you. "I just want to use this attack 50 times and unlock new moves!" I protest during my fourth run of the first route. The issue with the visual novel is that major story scenes or reveals are buffered by sometimes a half dozen or more battles against the game's somewhat annoying mooks. If you turn the difficulty down this isn't much of an issue, but if you're trying to enjoy both and not min-maxing your combat properly the combat can feel like a real slog when the next big story beat feels like it's going to answer a ton of questions. "I just wanna know what happens next!" I protest in the final route. Protip: The winning strat is to use some kind of gap-closer and then kick the enemy high into the air where you're relatively safe from getting ganged up on or shot from offscreen and then unloading a sick combo on them. Conclusion? Apart from the two parts of the game occasionally butting heads though, there's a lot to love here. I enjoyed each of the characters and the stories the game told about them, found the cyberpunk sci-fi world the game was built on fascinating, and loved most of my near-hundred hour run with the game. There's plenty of optional scenes and a few alternate endings for the various routes I haven't checked out yet, and it's crazy the level of mastery you CAN achieve in the mech combat portions of the game.

I asked my dad for Baldur's Gate 3 but he got me this instead, and said it was a fun and wholesome adventure. Dad...why did you lie to me? Now I have crippling depression and an addiction to Rain's feet. 10/10 would recommend.

Yes, this VN does take over 100 hours to complete. Here, you will master the intricate art of selectively ctrl-skipping duplicate parts from Route 3 to Reminiscence (Autumn) because for some reason, a remarkable chunk of text weren't "marked as read", even though you've like, obviously already read though it 3 routes ago Other than that, the virtual reality internet thing and robots and cyberpunk and shit feels like VRChat on crack and I fucking love it. Highly recommended if you want to read a really long sci-fi VN.
