Second game of the Dusk series. In this title, you get to choose whether your adventure revolves around Escha Malier or Logix Fiscario. Together, they will be working to complete several assignments as they investigate the nearby areas of Colseit. This game was a massive blast to first time through. The opening alone got me so hyped. I just love most of the OSTs and the writing felt a mile ahead of its previous game. The game expands a bit on some of Atelier Ayesha's mechanics, as well as introducing some fun ones. The time management is fairly relaxed. It can be compared to Atelier Rorona's, but a lot more loose. It is extremely easy to complete each assignment's main task. I found myself having a ton of free time during my blindthrough, allowing me to upgrade my equipments and consumables often; something that I enjoy doing in these type of games, that is often very limited due to the Time Limits of the older titles of this franchise. When it comes to the exploration experience, it's fairly standard. Exploration Equipments were replaced by Researches, so you won't have to spend time trying to min max those. That said, you do have a new mechanic to play with, so it still has its little spice to it. The combat is about as basic as most of the Atelier games. It builds upon what was laid down in Atelier Ayesha. The triangle formation is still a thing, but you are no longer limited to using Offensive Support actions when the characters are within the same quadrant. In addition to that, you will be able to have 3 characters in the backline, for times where you want to switch your tactics or need an emergency switch in to save a character while you're low on consumables or something. The alchemy is a bit similar to how Ayesha does it, but with a few tweaks as well. Materials being used in the synthesis now gives you "Elemental SP" on top of Elemental Attributes. Those Elemental SPs can be used to cast various Alchemy Skills. Each element provides different effects: Fire is great to maximizing yoursynthesis resources, water essentially supports the other elements, wind allows you to reuse materials more than once, while Earth focuses more on the result(Effect/Quality and Use Count/Synthesized Items). Unlike in Atelier Ayesha, traits/properties are a lot more complex here, a bit more in line with how recent Atelier titles(Mysterious & Ryza series) have them. This title is easily in my top 3 of all the Atelier titles that I've played so far(Steam), only missing Shallie at the time of this review. The product as a whole felt really great to consume. Just like in Atelier Ayesha, the game is overall very simple to get a grasp of, but grants you a much better experience with its much better writing, two great main characters and several new mechanics that were not overwhelming. I also really enjoyed the reworked Time system(as long as you don't have a pip, a day will not pass). The Dusk series is looking like a great first series for anyone looking to get into Atelier so far. I wonder if Shallie will be keeping this up. My Play Order at the time of this review: 1. Mysterious series (Sophie +, Firis -, Lydie & Suelle +) 2. Arland series (Rorona +, Totori -, Meruru +) // 4. (Lulua +) 3. Ryza series (Ryza +, Ryza 2 +) 5. Dusk series (Ayesha +, Escha & Logy +)

The Atelier series before the Mysterious games are more of a mystery to most people, and there's some reasons for that, namely the existence of time limits and the lack of various quality of life features. After playing through Escha & Logy, which was my first time with a pre-Mysterious game, I can say this: Your first Atelier experience should be with Mysterious or Ryza since the streamlined features and mechanics make the barrier to entry much less rough than the older games. However, if this isn't your first rodeo with Atelier, then E&L is certainly one of the games to experience. I can also say you can play the Dusk series in whatever order you desire since the stories are *mostly* not connected to each other unlike Sophie's journey in the Mysterious games as an example. Let's go over the story first. The Dusk series looks like it's more serious and dark due to it's... well, permanently dusk sky and ruined/post-apocalyptic looking areas. However, this is mostly untrue. The trademark slice of life, lighthearted vibe the series is known for is here and is the center of attention. The background about the world is slightly more grim, but the tone never fully shifts to that. However, that contrast between the world and the actual tone is quite interesting, and is unlike anything I've seen in any other Atelier I played. Protagonists Escha and Logix (Logy) are both alchemists that become government officials for Escha's hometown of Colset, and their job is to help with the townspeople's troubles and investigate the many ruins around them to learn the truth about them. It's quite an interesting angle that the protagonists are government employees, but it's a unique perspective on being an alchemist and the troubles they face together. The blooming relationship between Escha and Logy is also quite a fresh thing to experience, since very few Ateliers have both a male and female protagonist in the same game. Those two really carry the story; the supporting cast is also quite good, but not perfect across the board. Some characters can be rather one-dimensional or simply not have enough screen time to flesh them out. Regardless, it's still a good cast and there's quite a big number of them, just as much as Ryza 3 if you can believe it. Now for gameplay. As you might expect for an older entry, there are some hiccups and lack of quality of life features that are present in future entries, but E&L makes up for this with it's own unique quirks that make it stand out from the crowd. The main thing to point out is the quarterly assignment gameplay loop. Like most other older Ateliers, you have a time limit. In E&L, you must complete a primary assignment given to you within the "term", which is 4 in-game months (Think of it like Persona 4 and 5's deadlines). Aside from that, there are also dozens of optional assignments that will give you more rewards and further increase your rank, but will no longer be available to complete once the term is over, as the next term will have an entirely new set of assignments. You can finish the primary assignment in no time, but the real challenge is trying to complete all optional assignments in time as well, since it does require some planning ahead on where to go and what to synthesize. It really gives a different feel to the gameplay loop as it forces you to plan out your actions much more to get the highest possible rank you can. The story is also slightly affected by how many assignments you complete, along with some side activities here and there. Not everyone will be thrilled by this as it may sound stressful to some, but I feel that it's a very interesting way to experience Atelier, and I wouldn't mind seeing a formula like this in a modern entry. Synthesis is rather simple compared to future entries, as you simply add 2 to 4 ingredients, and spend points of a certain element to enhance the item as best you can. It does have it's depth later on, but the concept is far easier to grasp than something like Sophie's synthesis. It gets the job done, even if I think it could be better. Unlike Lydie & Suelle which was mostly just cosmetic flair, E&L goes farther with the dual protagonist premise. The biggest part is when you start a new game, you choose whether you want to play as Escha or Logy. You could consider these two different "routes", but it's mostly the exact same story. The only big change is exclusive event scenes here and there, along with exclusive endings for each. Escha uses the traditional cauldron to make synthesis ingredients and consumables, while Logy uses a blacksmith-esque method of alchemy where he can make weapons and armor. It's a really nice way to contextualize each of their own skills and where they grew up. Escha and Logy are also the only ones who can use items, and have unique skills together, so the two working together translates well into gameplay which is neat. Now I wanna highlight the notable issues I experienced. The writing and/or localization for some of the gameplay mechanics are either not well-explained or nonsensical. For example, Traits aren't actually called "traits", but "Properties" while Traits are something else entirely. I also noticed a fair number of trait and assignments descriptions that are either misleading, vague, or flat out factually wrong. An example is a SPD Increase trait has the description of "Increases the speed on accessories", but you can also apply said trait to weapons and armor as well as accessories. This doesn't ruin the game by any stretch, but it makes certain aspects of the game more difficult to understand than it should be since it's just not well explained at times. The in-game guide and enemy info is also sorely lacking. Unlike modern entries where you can sort and filter items to find what you need quickly, E&L just has a simple list with no pictures until you roll over the specific item. On the world map, there's no pictures of enemies or monsters in an area, just the name. And in both combat AND guide, you straight up have no information on the enemy, not even something as simple as their HP value. You also know no stats of theirs whatsoever, or even what their resistances are which makes it pointless to attempt to strategize using specific elemental damage. But all in all, Escha & Logy is an entry that's very much worth playing despite it's few drawbacks. The tonally different world and unique gameplay loop of completing assignments feels so different from the modern entires that I believe it's worth experiencing at least once. Undoubtedly a good game in spite of it's age.

i haven't finished the game but oh my god the music is superb in this game ! specially the boss fights music !! i mean you hear haruka shimotsuki then ito kanako ?! (incase you are not familiar with them ito kanako did most of stein gate songs) ----- ok now about the game mechs , i have finished more than 10 games in this franchise and in my opinion this is the most jrpg like game in the whole series - it didn't focus too much on alchemy but more about the story and the characters - ALSO imo it's the easiest one so far , even for someone who usually play on the easiest difficulty i can say this game is pretty easy so far , but i still won't recommend it as a first atelier game since it's not the most atelier-esque games in the series .

My favorite one in the franchise. Super fun, more RPG focused than the rest. It has some issues that need to be patched out, but neither will ruin your experience. Perfect game to start with if you're interested in the series.
Beautiful Story, One of the Best Atelier Games
Atelier Escha & Logy is a beautiful game where the old meets the new

Atelier Escha has clear objectives and a bunch of side tasks to complete during each period with the good old bingo chart from Rorona, while also having a very relaxed time limit to do everything to the point that it's impossible to fail the objective. It is a perfect balance for both beginners and veterans of the series because if you want to 100% all the tasks you're probably going to need to do some time management in order to get everything done efficiently.
All characters are great. There's an option to choose between Escha or Logy in the beginning, but both appear as main protagonists in each other's path. I have played with Escha this time and I like both of the protagonists, they are smart and have good personality. The supporting cast is also great and I had a lot of fun watching all of their events. Linca and Marion are my favorites. The only one that I don't like is Harry, he's so annoying lol
Story is very interesting and more than just a slice of life that the Atelier series is known for. It is the majority of the time just a slice of life, but it also keeps things interesting with mystery about the Unexplored Ruins, the land of Dusk and Clone's picture book. The characters learn, grow and get stronger through the years, they build an airship, fulfill their dreams and reach out to the truth about Flameu and Clone's past. It is a beautiful story and I liked it, specially towards the ending.
Took me about 40 hours to finish the game with Escha. I watched most of the character events and tried to complete everything I could. I played it slowly in order to do things efficiently (watching all cutscenes as they appear, explore every location, do a lot of quests, harvest everything on map, make all alchemy items, etc...). Must also mention that I played this game in Japanese, and I read a lot slower in Japanese.
Combat is very fun and greatly improved over Ayesha. In this game it's possible to play with 6 characters in your party and the use of supporting attacks make battles even more dynamic, also there's no need to recruit them every single time like in previous games.
Alchemy is very simple and very easy to understand. I like it a lot and I was able to use the system efficiently. Increase the elemental values to get the item's proprieties to appear, use skills to enhance the output and transfer the traits from the ingredients to the final product. Very fun and powerful stuff lol
Weapon and Equipment synthesis is back. I'm glad that it is in this game because it was very fun to make powerful gear. I could really feel Escha and Logy cooperation during alchemy to prepare the ingredients with good traits to make good equipment.
Soundtrack is beautiful and the game makes good use of the voiced tracks during important scenes giving a much more emotional impact.
Good game for Japanese language learners like myself. If you're somewhere between intermediate and advanced (N3/N2 level), just try playing Atelier Escha in Japanese. It's easy to understand, and you can probably learn a lot of new words along the way. The characters use a very simple spoken language and there isn't obscure Kanji in it.
There is more than enough time to do everything and the game even gives you an extra full year after the last assignment to complete what you couldn't previously. There is a good amount of side content to do post-game like very difficult optional bosses, build ultimate equipment with the best traits and new locations to discover but it might still get a little bit boring due to the huge number of free time available before the final day to see the final ending scenes.
Graphics are also greatly improved over Ayesha and looks beautiful, anti-aliasing is much better and textures are higher resolution. I had no crashing during my entire playthrough. The game does have severe frame pacing issues, but just locking it at 60fps using RTSS fixes the problem completely giving a super smooth output. It's also possible to run it at 1440p and even 4K by editing the .ini file easily. I'm running at 1440p60 on a GTX 1050 Ti.
The lag, delay and stutter from opening menus present in Ayesha is fixed in this game.
Totally recommended! It's one of the best games in the series with great story, great characters, big improvements in combat, graphics and alchemy over it's predecessors and it's also the last game to have a time limit, although very relaxed. Atelier Escha & Logy is a turning point for the series and a perfect balance between the old (with time limit) and the new (without time limit).

Fun game, but the port can be improved by a bit such as the random system save reset bug. Sometimes all of the costumes you unlocked reset for no reason.

Always choose Logy first. Atelier Escha and Logy is the 2nd Atelier game in the Dusk series. But honestly speaking, you don't need to play Atelier Ayesha before playing this (especially if you want to play as Logy). This game introduced me to the Atelier series and had lots of fun playing it.

Game has severe a bug that erases your game system settings. The effect of this is that unlocked items like costumes get reset and locked and you cannot get the back. This also blocks you from achieving the true ending as that requires replaying this game with a special flag set during first clear and this also will reset. As usual, KT is dead silent so maybe when Arland DX Mega Uber 16xHD, comes out in 20 years they will fix this.
