TVs turn on and off. Planes lose radar. Radio stations can't broadcast through the static. In the small coastal town of Camena, unnaturally occurring electromagnetic waves are suddenly causing interference with electrical and radio equipment. Reluctantly, Riley Poverly returns to her hometown to investigate the mystery, but what she finds is more than she bargained for.

Stop Parentage.

Five years ago on nearby Edwards Island, a few teenagers unwittingly opened a portal, creating a rift between realities and timelines. Now, members of a mysterious cult-like group called Parentage are deliberately trying to open a new portal to pull something out. Who are they? What do they want? Are they trying to contact ghosts?

Listen. Bob tail. Shave tail. Sleepy time gal. Is. Leave. Possible? It's time to find out... OK, so now that I have fully experienced the game, here are my (spoiler-free) thoughts: The presentation is fantastic. The graphics are a huge step up from the original while maintaining the familiar art style. The soundtrack is very good and fits the atmosphere well. The voice acting is top notch... everything flows like a natural conversation, but there are fewer instances of the lines being cut off when you give an answer; a problem that was ever present in the first game. The writing is as good as ever, but the characters - particularly the supporting ones - seem less fleshed out than they were in Oxenfree and I felt less connected to them because of that. I also felt like the decisions I made were less weighty or consequential and because of that the game didn't quite reach the same emotional highs. I had a few minor bugs where a character would become frozen and refuse to move from that spot until I reloaded. I also had a bug where two conversations took place over each other, which unfortunately prevented one side quest from being completed. These are minor complaints and they will no doubt be dealt with by future patches. All in all, it's a great game, and one I wholeheartedly recommend, but if I had to choose only one then I would pick the original every time.

It's so much more polished then the first oxenfree. I played for few hours now and I can't say a bad word about it so far. The mysterious atmosphere is as strong if not stronger then in the first game. The dialog works perfectly and even transition between scenes. Can't wait to see how to story resolves I am hooked.

Oxenfree may well be my personal favorite game of the past ten years, but I'm not too fond of Afterparty, so far Oxenfree 2 is a near perfect continuation of the great Oxenfree experience for me. The art style, the music, the atmosphere, the mystery, the choices in dialogues, everything plays out really nicely so far. The new walkie-talkie mechanism feels nice too (albeit I encountered a minor bug where the right mouse button click is not able to close the walkie-talkie UI before the player acquires the radio, not a big thing anyway, just use the Ctrl key instead to close the walkie-talkie for the first ten minutes I guess) My main gripe so far is that Oxenfree 2 seems to use the "voxel-ish" (?) graphics engine (used in Afterparty I think) which makes everything look less clean and crispy than Oxenfree. Oh well at least the overall art style still looks great, the voxel-ish graphics is just a bit annoying, but nothing too bad. Also IMHO the map screen looks a bit less stylish than Oxenfree's due to the lively colors, but that's also just a very minor thing that I'm sure I can get used to in a couple hours. Now I'm just really looking forward to save EVERYONE as advertised in the game description. Just hope this "EVERYONE" includes certain characters from Oxenfree ;-) So far I'd say if you have played and liked Oxenfree, then definitely just grab Oxenfree 2 right away! On the other hand if you haven't played the original Oxenfree, then it's time to get BOTH games! Oxenfree 2 does explain the main mystery of the original Oxenfree within about one hour into the game so you won't be too confused even if you haven't played the first game, but playing through the first game will surely let you have stronger emotional connections to certain characters mentioned in this game, and the first game is pure greatness and one playthrough does not take much time anyway (and I still think its crispier graphics looks a bit more beautiful in its hand-drawn style :-p ) EDIT: Encountered the first major bug in my playthrough, when exploring the Community Center after having placed two transmitters , Jacob suddenly stopped following me around, and I couldn't interact with any of the hot spots in the house (they appear as big solid dots but do not expand to circles when I go near them). Wasted about fifteen minutes wandering around trying all sorts of things including radio and walkie-talkie to no effect, and couldn't exit the scene as there should be a major event happening. Finally gave up, exited to main menu, reloaded from the start of the scene, and somehow everything works okay this time. Not a show-stopper, but it did feel kinda frustrating during those fifteen minutes wasted not knowing what was happening (when in fact nothing was happening due to the bug...)

Mainly I wanted to say that it's unverified but seems to be working flawlessly on the Steamdeck for anyone wondering. Buy it immediately!

Spoilers for both games Anyone who plays this game has probably already played the first one or is aware of the story beats and inconclusive ending so I feel justified in not recommending this game despite it being independently a high quality experience, this sequel fails to bring a satisfying conclusion to the vast majority of the plot threads established. Instead of focusing and building on the parts of the first game that i enjoyed such as the exploration of the time loop, the branching choices that come with the loop and the characters relationships, it moves instead to a new set of characters that, to me, felt even shallower without the interesting complication of the loop In the first game you have the five teenagers, the ghosts and, sort of, Michael, so 7 characters, in the sequel you have Riley, Jacob, the three teenagers, Rex, Alex (again), Evelyn, the old fisherman, the teenage radio host, the park ranger, the amateur paranormal investigator and Riley's dad so 13 characters. With the loop's removal and loss of any major choices (I include the final decision in this given that the consequences are limited to a brief conversation and a pie chart) there is no incentive to get to know any of them and so, despite the technical improvements in sound, graphics and being able to carry conversations through load screens I have no interest in any of the characters outside of maybe Jacob and Riley. Pacing was an issue the first game never really dealt with, at times it felt like the game was lamp shading this by skipping large sections of the walk and talk in sequential loops, and the sequel drops the ball even further in this area. The overly long cave sections and embarrassing retread of the puzzle within Maggie's house seemed dull filler at best. The over sharing and nervousness of Jonas and Alex's interactions made a kind of sense from the perspective of people suddenly, involuntarily, thrust into a familial relationship who are both trying to make it work. In the sequel though it is just two co workers on their first ever shift suddenly revealing their souls to each other, this just didn't line up for me as well the original did. And my final issue is Alex, despite having a literal infinity to come up with a plan for escape, or in which to go mad in, she is either shockingly sane or shockingly incompetent. There was a moment towards the end where Jacob notes how remarkably lucky that they were there with just the tools to prevent a disaster and I thought for sure Alex was going to be ground hog daying us but nope another abandoned plot thread and instead she decides to convince Riley to functionally kill herself and her child because their relationship will be bad??? Alex has to be the biggest idiot alive for any of the plot to make sense at all, I mean if she was in communication with the Olivia before the events of the night and her plans are effectively ruined by Riley and Jacobs presence why not just have the teenagers disrupt the schedule using the fact the fact that she literally knows the future? It could be that i'm completely blinded by nostalgia but I feel like the first game made so much more sense than this and despite the general improvements I would trade a thousand Rileys for one Alex.

Puts a really good bow on the Oxenfree series. I enjoyed the characters, it was fun listening to them just talk about life. It honestly helped me figure out some stuff I've been going through too. So yeah. 10/10. Really just phenomenal

If you like the first Oxenfree, you're going to enjoy this one too. So far it looks really good and plays really well on a Steam Deck, even though it's not yet verified.

Massive technical improvements over the first Oxenfree! But with major narrative flaws. (Read below for an explanation) +Better animations +Better mini interactions +Better audio and sound design +Larger map to explore -some goofy dialogue, never met a group of humans that converses in that way -Backtracking (though it is minor) - Dialogue cutoff... many times in my two hours I had moments where a conversation would be midway or near the end and then be instantly cut off for another conversation to take its place. (Another minor annoyance) Though it still has some flaws that were common in the first one. Many times in the game crazy events happen and the reaction from the character is either calm or mildly stressed. Now, this problem was also present in the previous entry yet less so. There should definitely be more screaming or mental breakdown moments. I don't think a single human being would stay calm after the first 2 hours of events. Edit: I still recommend it, but the story feels weaker now. Having Alex agree to sacrifice a grieving girl just so she can save her friends doesn't fit her. I remember being able to break the loop in the first Oxenfree, Alex called someone off the island and convinced them to not get on the ferry. Breaking the cycle and freeing her from this nightmare. But the second one just retcons this. And the other options are ridiculous. Unless there's a secret ending where I can actually get a good conclusion which I didn't find. I don't feel Oxenfree 2 should even exist if this is what we get. Alex and her friends barely get screen time when the game is literally about them. Riley and Jacob feel forced, disjointed, and out of place. I liked them slightly but they don't rise to the bar set by the previous group of characters. They feel meh... they have interesting dialogue and some minor problems to overcome but the writing fails to bring any of it forward. they both behave like teenagers, even though they are full-blown adults. They don't cuss. They speak in a teenager angst dialect. For the most part, they don't have great dynamics... Alex and her friends had their personality bounce from one another and create a really fun dynamic to interact with. But here Riley and Jacob just feel... submissive? Jacob never argues or gets angry or disagrees. He's worst than a wimp. Riley herself also fails in standing out. Her only character gimmick is that she's pregnant; which can be a very interesting thing but the story goes nowhere with it. It doesn't affect the story at all. Alex on the other hand had flashbacks or future flashes with her dead brother. And interacting with him actually affected the story. So I fail to understand how the devs messed this up so badly when they already had the blueprints for it. I'll be honest... the writing isn't great. The plot feels all over the place. -You have a cult (Turns out it's not a cult but two kids that are following a grieving child who wants to believe she can bring her parents back from the dead. -Adler becoming evil (for no reason... I guess she gave up? but she also gets 2 minutes of screen time and vague dialogue) -Alex's friends get no screen time... They say 11 words in total... WHY?!?! There's also pointless interaction of the side characters; having Hank, Nick, Maria, Evelyn, and Shelley be interactable is cool. But they add nothing... They don't help. Only one of them actually gives bits of lore for the player. But for the most part, they are just there for super minimal side content. Which feels like a giant miss. It would have been cool if we could add them to the ensemble cast and have them for the finale. My expectations weren't high at all which sucks because I wanted to have a fun experience. But I feel more rubbed off than happy. Nightstudio is starting to feel like a one-hit wonder...
