The level design is like a neon fever dream with a matching trance backing soundtrack. Everything pulses to the music and the controls feel just right. I haven't enjoyed jumping around and chasing after collectibles this much since Fez. If you're in doubt, try the demo. The videos I've seen give you the gist of it, but experiencing it in action is a whole 'nother level.

A true Rainbow Islands successor, by way of Mega Man and Electronic Super Joy. Plenty of challenge, but less rote memorization than the Super Meat Boy/Celeste style games.

OCTAHEDRON is simply pure bliss from start to finish for anyone who's a fan of challenging platformers. With its punchy neon aesthetics and fantastic soundtrack, once you're past the short, intuitive tutorial you're straight into the meat of the game with no hand-holding necessary. There are some unobtrusive story cutscenes at the start and end of the game, however everything in between can be played through with no barriers, or any text to read. Practically every level has a unique mechanic that never gets exhausted, with new enemies, obstacles and platforms that are introduced and swiftly subverted, not to mention the surfing platforms you create yourself which give a great sense of freedom. Collectibles of varying difficulty are strewn across the level but rarely feel like a slog, particularly due to careful level design that allows you to backtrack and collect everything in one sitting regardless of later upgrades. They rarely gate progress, and the harder items simply unlock bonus levels that aren't required to beat the game, thus allow for some extra challenge. Not to mention the medals for completing levels in as few platforms as possible, or with no deaths. The art-style works perfectly with the type of arcade-like platformer this is, and despite remaining the same throughout, never got tedious. Some people may find the noise distracting (there are options to dull the effects in the menu) however it never felt like it was getting in the way of gameplay. As for the soundtrack, and the way the game's rhythm flows with it (without being a necessity to play along with the rhythm), I have nothing but praise. I'll be listening to it non-stop. If I had to point out anything, I guess it would be accessibility for people who may want to experience the soundtrack and art, but could find the later stages quite difficult. You can take 3 hits before respawning at a nearby checkpoint, and have 4 tries until having to restart over. Personally I feel this is pretty fair and individual levels don't tend to last too long. But maybe a mode with no life limit (like how some still genuinely challenging platformers work, i.e VVVVVV or Super Meat Boy) could be useful without drastically changing the nature of the game. If Steam had scores, and for people who love numbers, I'd give this a solid 9/10. I very much feel I got my money's worth with an initial 10 hour playthrough, and 20+ hours of trying harder modes, beating par goals, and going fast. Buy this game now.

This is one of the best games I have ever played! It was incredibly exciting and fun both throughout my initial playthrough and when going back to re-play the levels. I cannot stress enough how amazing this game is! I would rate it 10/10, but only because I can't rate it higher. It was absolutely incredible to experience, and I would emphatically recommend this game to anyone! The amazing platforming, creative puzzles, and incredible music all built to make this one of my favorite games ever!

Clever platforming, beautiful psychedelic visuals, and a pulsing, trance-inducing soundtrack. This game is a standout in all of it's aspects and deserves the attention of retro-to-modern gamers

Octahedron is another Concept Platformer, and its concept is this: what if you could hit a button to spawn a platform under your feet? It pulls hours of great vertically-scrolling platforming from that premise with constantly inventive mechanics and level design. Levels are constantly introducing fun new elements like platforms that toggle solidity each time you spawn a platform, or enemies that try to jump you from below, pushing the platform you're on to the ceiling. Each level feels distinct and is built for replay, with medals available for beating a level with all collectibles, without dying, below a par time, and below par platform spawns. Reaching the end of Octahedron is within the grasp of any platformer fan, and the medals are a wonderful extra challenge for dedicated players. Meeting platform pars is especially fun, asking you to work out the most efficient paths through each level. My biggest complaint with Octahedron has to do with the final challenge. The lead-up to the end is a lot of fun, handing you a power-up you've been wanting since the start of the game and giving you a gauntlet of fast-paced levels to use it. But the very last level changes up the formula for the worse. Without going into spoilers, I'll just say that while it's not too difficult, I believe it's too chaotic. It's just not as interesting as all the carefully-crafted level design up to that point. But while that's a disappointment to end on, it's a small part of the game.

Awesome platformer! Tight controls, great variety in puzzle mechanics, SICK soundtrack and just the right price. Highly recommended to anyone who wants a tight platformer with no bullshit!

This game started out very promising, but by the third level you can already see what this game devolves into - precision platforming without the controls to back it up. My favourite! The premise of Octahedron is that you control your neon character through a visually appealing world, with blinking backgrounds fitting to the beat and plenty of stuff to collect. The gimmick is that you can summon platforms to appear under you to reach higher areas; you can also surf on those platforms for a short time before they disappear. Now the problem is: this game has several medals you can earn for each level; one for collecting everything, one for only using a certain amount of platforms, one for completing it under a specific amount of time and so on. Especially the time medals are very frustrating to get with the controls of this game. If you just summon a platform under you while jumping, instead of just immediately being glued to that platform and able to jump (which would make the controls 100 % better), you are still stuck in the air for the fraction of a second before landing on said platform. It makes precision jumping a nightmare because you have to factor in the delay of you being in the air before your feet land on the platform, and with the amount of platforms you have to summon in quick succession, you are bound to mess up somewhere; especially considering you HAVE to do everything perfectly to even have a chance at the time medals. The visuals of the game are also waaaay overblown. By the third level, there are already so many obstacles on the screen that are out to hurt you that mesh with the blinking background and the overbearing amount of visual effects - it is very hard to follow what is going on. Long story short, the amount of patience needed for this game is just not for me. Everything visually meshes with each other in the worst way, and the platforming is clunky and delayed. Maybe it gets better later on, but I did not get past the third level.

As much as I wanted to like this game, I cannot bring myself to recommend this to anyone. This game's art style is very nice to look at, but I find it difficult to notice safe platforms from obstacles at times. Also, I can't seem to click with this game's type of difficulty for some reason. If anyone else enjoys this game, more power to you! But I don't really like this game at all.
