Big Picture: Not Bad But Overpriced
Legendary Tales is essentially Blade & Sorcery combat and climbing applied to Diablo 1. You have a single town with music that feels literally ripped straight from the original, and you go into a cursed monestary to fight skeletons and get loot and level up stats. You descend down through 10 floors, all of which nearly identical. Every enemy in the game is the same skeleton with varying amounts of armor. There's no story of any kind. It's a game that is insultingly thin on content, especially given it's $35 price tag, and has a mountain of minor annoyances. But I have to admit, it gets the hard things mostly right. Combat honestly does feel good and is the best part of the game, and there's a lot of feel and nuance with each weapon, and at least a couple ways to play. Lastly, there is coop, which is also unfortunately rare in the VR world, so it really does occupy a niche for some people that no other game on the market offers. Because of all that, there's enough reason for optimism to wishlist and follow updates. It's not too buggy either, it just DESPERATELY needs more content and QoL. I don't recommend buying this game in its current state unless you really love pretend sword fighting and Diablo and have some cash sitting around. Having a friend also boosts the value of the game a lot, but I only had the fortune of playing singleplayer this time around :( But I imagine it's really fun.
A Note On Difficulty and advice
Just wanted to address this here since I've seen other people complain about it. I found this game to actually be very easy. I got the "500 kills" achievement before the "die once" achievement, and I did it as a strength character who just ran into enemies with a sword and board. I don't think skeletons are too tanky or do that much damage. Any time I was low on health, I just town portaled and bought health potions. Not Hard. I think the reason people have overreacted to the difficulty is them being totally unfamiliar with min/maxing in diablo-style games, plus the fact that the game does literally nothing to explain to you wtf the stats do. It is EXTREMELY IMPORTANT to prioritize one of the damage stats early, like Strength or Dexterity. Each weapon scales with one of the two. It's also super important to have armor early on. I can't think of any other reason people are complaining about the stats of enemies. I have frequently been able to one-hit kill them with regular weapons. You just have to understand that stats give you more damage than the actual damage number on weapons. If you play, make sure you are testing your weapons on the target dummy to see which is better. Also I have seen people complain about the damage timer. It is kind of a confusing mechanic, it's considered a "heavy attack" if you attack only once every 1.5 seconds. I don't know if it's a mechanic that makes the game better, but it didn't bother me too much, because there are ways around it. 1) the timer is indepent for each weapon, so dual-wielding gives you two timers to work with. This is part of the reason that two-handed weapons just fucking suck in this game, at least early on. Strength is such a big part of my damage that even hitting enemies with my shield does a large amount of damage. 2) there are stats that boost your "light attack", or attacks that are rapid, if that's what you want. The game doesn't "force" you to attack slowly, Light attacks are absolutely viable, they are just harder to win with because it requires you to be more active and parry less. But I absolutely follow my heavy attacks up with a few light attacks when I play, just to maximize each opening. 3) There are ways to RESET the heavy attack and do them rapidly, the tutorial tells you this, but people probably skipped it because it's a dense, atrocious slog. Weapon abilities reset the heavy attack and it's a great way to get a big attack in before you get hit.
A Mountain Of Annoyances
My God is this game from fucking stone ages when it comes to RPG mechanics. Let me just run down the list. Ridiculously slow movement. No item compare. No damage numbers. Tiny inventory, horrible inventory controls. No buyback (sold items aren't even upcharged, they are gone forever). To sell items, you have to drop them into this tiny fucking pit that glitches out constantly. You drop your equipment where you die, which is ABSOLUTELY not good design in an ARPG where you are totally defined by the strength of your gear. The weapon holster positioning is fucking stupid. The hip slots are WAY too far forward and constantly get in the way. The back holster is way too low and should be over the shoulder. It just kills the fantasy when I reach behind my shoulder to grab my giant sword, and then realize I actually need to reach awkwardly under my shoulder. The drop rates are OUTRAGEOUSLY bad. I found 2 legendaries in 10 hours and they both sucked. All stats are linearly scaling, and all enemies are linearly scaling, so the gameplay literally doesn't evolve the tiniest bit as you play. You are just getting bigger numbers at the same rate as your enemies. The only salvation here is the unique abilities the legendaries have, I found such an awesome one once. It was a giant anime-style katana who's ability send wind slashes through the air and could hit multiple enemies at a distance. But by time I found it, it was 12 levels behind me and therefore had garbage stats, so I couldn't even enjoy it. In the twenty levels since then, I haven't found a single one. So the only thing in the entire game that makes the gameplay evolve at all might as well not even exist because the game doesn't give you any, ever. There's no more insulting, asinine design philosophy than shit drop rates, especially in a game that offers nothing else to look forward to. There's no boss fights as far as I can tell, if there is, there's only 1, on the tenth floor which I haven't been to yet. The graphics are unbelievably bad, every single room is a literally flat square with 90 degree angles and no decorations or lighting. Biggest annoyance, we have to talk about the parrying. It's one of the best things about this game, which is why hitbox issues are such a large frustration. There is no player body, despite them having the capability and IK already in place to render it. It is impossible to tell what will and will not hit me half the time, seriously. Sometimes enemies lunge through my body behind me, and I take damage from their fucking elbows (which can't be parried) going through me. There is literally nothing you can do to stop this, since parrying is the only way to interrupt the enemy (besides killing them). But you can't do this with enemies, because they have a physically simulated body that you can get stuck on. They NEED to implement a player body, and fix the aiming on the enemies so they are swinging their weapons at you and not their elbows. If an enemy swings their weapon BEHIND you, their arms that bump into you should lose momentum and not do damage. Lastly, there is a very serious issue in this game of attacks that the player DOES perfectly parry do damage to the player anyway. Because the player has no body, you can parry the attack AFTER it hits you, which is just stupid. Please devs, give us a body. It is a core part of the physically simulated realism, check bonework and blade & Sorcery. PS. I really think this game needs 1) mod support 2) body part damage or disablement so that there's a reason to aim for an enemy's arm or head and not just their feet all the time 3) way more creativity in non-combat interactions in the rooms. So much of the potential of the fully physically based gameplay is untapped, and there's no traps or puzzles or hidden curiosities to pique the player's interest. The game is all combat all the time. There are other components to a good adventure besides just combat.

US : A game that has a lot of potential but unfortunately it will end up in oblivion ... Too repetitive, only 3 different enemies, always similar scenery, 2pnj in the village with no animations, no skins for the characters… Why do I say it will end up in oblivion? : Because I made these suggestions on their discord, and obviously it is moderated by a child who does not support criticism… The suggestions they do not care and prefer to waste their time putting pumpkins on the heads of the skeletons for Halloween rather than to add enemies, scenery ... For suggesting this, wanting to help with their beta, they banned me from the discord, so I really regret having given them € 30! it is not deserved for this unfinished game. I hope the game evolves, so my rating will change ... but for now, Dev behavior + Game Evolution = 0 French : Un jeu qui a beaucoup de potentiel mais hélas il finira aux oubliettes…

Can't recommend this game at the moment due to the following points - Too repetative You'll fight skeletons and goblins the entire game, occasionally you'll fight a few bats here and there and at rare points mimics. The enemy variety isn't good at all and unless you enjoy fighting the same thing over and over again this game won't be for you - Balancing issues At the start of the game you get some points which you can allocate into any stat you want. Problem with this is there's LUCK which you can't level at all while you're in-game so the only way is to dump all your points into LUCK at the start because you can't get any more points in game in any way. If you decided to be a wizard and dump all your points into WIS and INT, good luck. You're gonna have to take frequent naps since it takes forever to regenerate mana to be able to use your spells again. While the spells are decent you'll also have to get used to using the same spell over and over again, not because there's a lack of spells, because you'll never find any in the game except for the starting tutorial area, the rest are in the store and cost a fortune (80k gold, what the fuck?). The only viable "build" seems to be a standard STR knight because everything else sucks damage wise and that brings me to the next point - Damage sponges All the enemies except for bats are damage sponges and take forever to kill unless you're very lucky and found a legendary weapon which will carry you for a long time. I understand it's a RPG but come on, it shouldn't take 50 hits to kill a single skeleton in the first few levels unless it's a boss or something. It gets tiring to fight the same skeletons over and over and the fact that there's 5 or more of them in every room just makes it feel tedious to continue to play - Modding & Devs Devs have openly stated that they don't want to support modding for the game. Pretty sure they went back on this and said it might happen but the fact that they said it at all more than enough proves it to me that they never had it in mind at all and won't commit to it. Enemy variety is also a thing that gets brought up, devs don't want to include human enemies because they don't want to promote violence or murder or whatever it was, forgot the reason but it's in one of the steam discussion posts they've made. I'd have no problem with no humans if they actually had more enemy variety but if you can't even add some typical fantasy enemy to replace "bandits" or whatever role a human would fill then I just take it as laziness. - Price 33€. Price would be fine if the developers actually adressed any of these issues and fixed the game. As of now I can see it as a 15€ - 20€ at most and that's being generous. I'll change my review if they somehow turn their game around but as of now I can't recommend this game as it is very barebones and needs further development and polish. Legendary Tales isn't completely bad, it is just very rough around the edges and it would be nice to see if the developers could turn it into a good game. As of now I'll hold off playing it until they've fixed most of the issues I have with the game.

I will start by saying I love this game, it is perhaps turning into one of the best VR experiences I own. Currently at the time of this review I'm opted into the new beta version where they re-hauled the entire attribute system and magic system due to player feedback. On top of that the new glitches were addressed in under 20 hours from the time of report and the inital patch. And further refinement in under 4 days beyond that. The love this game gets from the developers is great and I'm glad how much they listen to player feedback. Pros of the game: Great combat system with full customization with new primary attributes that climb based on your combat style. And secondary attributes that are chosen by you. The skills- The skill trees are new and still a little bare but there is a wide variety of skills, passives and talents to chose from that can change up gameplay to your style Map exploration- Map delving will be enjoyable on each of the current 10 levels as they are randomized and an enjoyable length with treasure and loot to be hunted down and found or challenge portals found. Hidden walls and breakable floors will have you tapping on walls from time to time. Climbing puzzles and lever locked gates placed just enough to shake up the wandering around the rooms without being overused to get annoying. Enemies- Enemies have enjoyable attack patterns that can be learned and have actual sword play rather than just hacking from side to side at you. As you delve deeper the skeletons have different type of skeleton that change their sword style just slightly. Goblins chop at your ankles and make you enjoy plunging an axe or blade down into their skull and cause their other goblin allies to flee and run into a wall in the panic. Finally you have the champions of these current two races that have magic or abilities with buffed up health and damage, Loot- Loot is plentiful and you'll be hunting out enchanted weapons and armor until you find your first Exotic(orange) drop before thirsting for each and every one of those unique items and armors. Updates- Updates are always on the way and there is a clear road map that can be seen on the website of current, planned, and even considered updates. Cons There are cons to this game like every game. This one at this time is that it is currently Early Access, and while enjoyable in its current state once you beat the boss at the bottom it leaves you with little but loot hunting for what to do next. Enemy variety- Enemy variety is currently sparse as you have variations of skeletons, mimics, bats and goblins only. While there are 2 new monster types in progress but currently you'll just have to enjoy bashing and slashing your way through floors of skeletons. The only exception is the boss at the end. Single themed- By this I mean that the entire dungeon will look like a church or undead crypt as you make your way from room to room. And while there is an arena mode I do not believe the aesthetic with change until they add in the next dungeon. Empty Hub- the main town is very empty especially with the magic vendor only selling potions now after the update changed magic to skill points rather than buy it. With only the blacksmith selling blue tier and lower loot he is more of a selling point for all the gear and items you collect. The only place you really spend your hard fought gold at currently is the gambling corner were you buy randomized loot hoping to catch a big win. In conclusion this game is good now and one of the best Dungeon Delving experiences you can own currently for VR. If the game continues to be updated with the new weapons, magic, skills, rooms and enemies as planned this will become one of the greatest VR experiences on the market. If you enjoy delving into dark dungeons and gathering a party of friends to have a good time smashing crates and enemies alike you will love this game too.

A promising VR Swordplay game, reminding us of Blade and Sorcery, with added Co-op and Dungeon Crawling... Pros : - Combat is easily the strong suit of this game, parrying and stunning ennemies before you attack them feels great - Semi RNG Levels, helping mix up the game and making sure you don't learn all the designs that easily - RNG Loot, pushing you to always get the next upgrade to be even more powerful - Co-op makes it a blast to specialise in what you love, allowing you to take on specific roles in the party => Warrior, Wizard, Ranger or Rogue for example are all viable options. Cons : - Price tag is high for what the game currently has to offer in my opinion - Levels are a bit empty at the moment, filled with the same props, not always interactible - Loot has a level requirement, sometimes forcing you to wait until you can use that one rare weapon you found - Loot and gold aren't shared and it's always first come, first served - Looted items are bound to you by default and cannot be given right away to another party member, this is especially problematic since in this game you find "crystals" before they turn into items. EDIT: You can turn back items into crystals and trade them using the crystal fountain. - Moving around the town and dungeon is somewhat tedious, since our character is slow and the levels are huge - Missed opportunities to make the game more interactable in VR => ex : Manually drinking potions instead of pressing a button - No seated mode While it isn't the multiplayer dungeon crawling Blade & Sorcery I hear plenty of influencers mention, Legendary Tales is it's own promising game, hindered by it's somewhat hefty price tag for the content it has to offer at the time of this review. I would change this to a "Recommendation" if the game was around 20€ or below

One of the best VR titles out there. I'll start with the not as good aspects. The aesthetics are a little on the boring side, but technologically the graphics work. It has a sort of Diablo 2 vibe that I enjoy, but it feels like they could push just a little bit more style. Drab, that's the word. It's lacking in color. Goes for sound design/ music as well. It's fine, it's functional, but I do wish it were *more*. But honestly I can overlook those details because this game is *fun*. The core gameplay loop has you exploring a randomized dungeon, fighting monsters, getting loot, and then returning to town to buy and sell items. If you beat a floor, you unlock the next one, even if you die. You don't permanently lose your equipment when you die, but you do have to go find where you died to pick it back up (if you quit the game, your stuff is sent back to town so you actually can't lose it). Even stuff that glitches through the floor or gets stuck somewhere will be sent back to town, and I appreciate how forgiving that is. There is a permadeath mode though, if that's more your speed (I'll try that at some point, I'm sure). Like most games in the loot genre, it comes in the form of colored crystals that indicate rarity. White items have no added stats, blue have one, then yellow and purple have more, and orange items have extra special effects. For example, I found an orange one handed axe that does extra damage as a thrown weapon, and comes with an ability that lets you pull it back to your hand. It totally changed up my fighting style and was a lot of fun. True to the genre, finding white items is a bit underwhelming, but unlike other games they actually do come in handy sometimes. For example, there are some puzzles that require holding down a switch, and you may need to leave an item behind. Or if you throw or drop your weapon, you can use one you find to defend yourself while you pick it up. The melee combat is fun. The enemies have good attack telegraphing as you learn to block and parry, but I've even found as I've advanced up the floors that they do gain slightly more complicated patterns, or do the same ones a bit faster. One of the weaker aspects of the game as it is now is the lack of variety in enemy types; you'll mostly be fighting skeletons. That being said, it is likely there will be more in the future, and aside from skeletons I have seen at least three other enemy types that come with interesting challenges. One thing I appreciate about the enemies so far is they all stay within the acceptable range of clearly monsters. I find killing humans in VR just a little too intimate most of the time, so the RPG aspects are very welcome. I've only recently started checking out magic. Currently it's a little bit difficult to aim. There is definitely an assist that prefers to target enemies, but occasionally I get shots flying in weird directions. There are three main elemental attacks: fire, ice, and lightning. Their base forms all seem to be identical, but it looks like they grow into more of an identity at higher levels of the skill tree. I can't really speak to multiplayer as I haven't tried it, but I can't imagine it wouldn't be super fun to be doing all this with a group of friends. There's even a pretty clear space for taking on different roles of tank, ranged dps, and melee dps. As far as I know there isn't currently a system for healing or buffing, but given that some of the enemies can do that I wouldn't be surprised if that came along at some point. Overall, one of my favorite VR games (the only other contender is Until You Fall, so if you like that you might like this). The gameplay loop is fun in its current state, and it's a great foundation for the added content they say they have planned, and hopefully a whole bunch more they haven't announced yet.

(i have over 100 hours in b&s so its from the b&s perspective) Combat: the overall combat of the game is good in every area and satisfying most of the time (punching feels great) Weapons: the weapons are great, lots of variety and different rarity witch is new to me the only bad things to do with the weapons was aiming the bow and two handed weapons Movement: slow, very slow takes me about 40 seconds to get to the dungeon's entrance but is understandable because of how the combat works. Magic: lots of different spells and so far I have had fun with them compared to b&s if your looking for a more grounded version of b&s then this is perfect along with rpg elements and with dungeon's to explore (also the skill tree is very fun) performance: for me, i can run the game with no problem (max quality settings) specs: cpu: i5 9400f gpu: 1660 ti ram: 16gb 3200 headset: rift s (if you're left handed like me then their is adequate support for it but its not to good but it will do, might be worth re-maping some of the bindings) (now give me steam points :p)

Subtle nods to the original Diablo, imagine a Cooperative VR lootfest where swordplay is 10/10. ...But what really hits it home is when you come to the conclusion that you're a gigachad, and you and your buddy are going to abstain from all weaponry and star platinum 'OraOraOra' everything that moves. This game is a love letter to VR gamers everywhere, and I fucking love you back, Urban Wolf Games Inc. Yes, I will go to the dance with you.
