  So... After 8 hours I'm nearly done with the final level and I thought I'd take a break and post a review. I bought HoH4 on day one, which I never do, because HoH 2 & 3 are my favorite casual games. (Skip the first one, it sucks.) Overall I'd say it's close in spirit to HoH 3, except it has the same sliding puzzles as HoH 2. But contrary to both, it doesn't have any single hidden object scene, and that's really disappointing because HoH has some of the coolest hidden object scenes in any casual game. The new mechanics are interesting (sometimes a bit infuriating), the level designs are often clever like in the previous games. Timed difficulty is overall very fan-centric. If you completed the earlier games multiple times with all achievements, your first playthrough will still be brutal -- I've only managed to complete 25 levels within half the time, but I probably got at least 60 levels complete within 60% of the alloted time. It can be frustrating. The graphics are pretty good but I'm not sure why they felt they had to change the tiles. The new colors are just too bright and colorful for my taste. Storywise, you get 7 maps, each with their own end boss (a fun fight system, albeit not too hard). I kinda liked the whole 'rebuild a town' theme in the previous games, but this one's okay too. Plus you get to learn some history, such as: the great heroes were nobodies who used a specific weapon to beat their monsters. Just finding the weapons again allows you to beat them yourself. And those weapons are one-time use only, you can't use them to beat two monsters. Also of interest for history buffs: everybody is a mindless capitalist. If they like you, they'll help you in exchange for gold. If they hate you, they'll help you in exchange for gold. That's cool. Start gathering gold, apparently that's the solution to everything. Overall it's a pretty great game -- just not as good as its predecessors, in my opinion. But I'll still strongly recommend it. PS: after finishing the game twice and recording over 30 hours of playtime, I stand by my original review. Achievements carry over your subsequent playthroughs, so you'll need to complete the first 'world' several times to ensure you get the speed-based achievements. The other achievements also require doing stuff many times but can eventually be unlocked. The only 'hard' ones in my opinion are related to the Helias Chamber -- amount of gold acquired in a game and overall. Getting more than 7000 gold is impossibly hard and luck-based. Since you can't redo levels, you'll have to exit them manually and start again to try and get the elusive number. Also, there's a couple new tracks playing in the background, they're pretty good but again, not to par with earlier games.

  If you liked the previous three Heroes of Hellas, you know what you're getting. A pleasantly mindless matching game with a hokey mythological story tacked on. I know that might sound a bit condescending, or as if I don't like the game, but the opposite is true. Sometimes it's good to just detach your mind from everything else, and seek the help of the heroes to destroy all obstacles to releasing treasure chests!

  Even though I'm officially recommending "Heroes Of Hellas 4: Birth Of Legend," I'm actually on the fence about it. The gameplay is mostly OK, the graphics are acceptable for a Match 3-ish type of game, and, since it took me 65.5 hours to complete it with all Achievements, the $6 list price means it's certainly worth the money. My so-so feelings for the game can probably be attributed to my angst over a few of the Achievements and some minor technical issues. - It's possible to put the game into a "No More Moves" infinite loop. The game doesn't check if it's impossible for you to EVER have a move given your currently available tiles. It'll just keep re-arranging things until you ALT-F4 out of the game (nothing else works). - Widescreen isn't properly supported. The game leaves empty sidebars on each side of the main area. The problem is that stuff is happening in those sidebars that we're not supposed to see and it flickers badly. - If you're using a timer, the timer doesn't have gradations showing 1/3 and 1/2 the time. Since there are Achievements for getting a number of puzzles done within those time limits, that makes it a bit difficult to see if you made it. - You can't replay inidividual puzzles of the main campaign (there are puzzles that are easily re-playable). All you can do is restart the whole thing. - The Rapt Hero Achievement requires you to play 60 levels without turning off the game. For me, that should have taken about 10 hours (ugh). Unfortunately, the game crashed about 5 hours in, so my progress towards that was wiped out. - The timing Achievements (completing some number of levels in less than 1/2 or 1/3 the available time) are really hard. - The Helios' Treasure levels Achievements are also really hard. Getting the Achievement for 50,000 gold (cumulative) takes about five runs through the whole main campaign. Getting the one for 7,000 gold in one such level is darn near impossible (especially since it depends an awful lot on what tiles the game decides to drop). But, overall, even though I have issues with it, I'd say that if you liked the earlier games, you should probably be happy with this one. So, a borderline recommendation.

  The game is nice but for the steam-achievments it's getting a thumbs down from me. For one achievement you have to play 60 level without quitting the game...
