TLDR: Decent space fighter sim that is very repetitive. Despite being advertised as open world, it is not an open world game. I had fun for 10 hours and deleted it after 20. It is worth buying when on a good sale, but it will be disappointing and dull by the end. Decent space fighter sim that gets repetitive very quickly. This largely come from the fact that the different ships and weapons do not change your play style or tactics. There are difference, but they are minor. Going from the fast, lightly armored, and maneuverable ship to the slow and heavily armored ship did not require a change in how you play. The ships simply did not vary enough to create different game play experiences. This issue holds double true for the weapons. It doesn't matter which weapon you take, they are all the same. Some have lightly shorter range and some lightly longer, but that is all. You can switch between weapons without needing to change how you play. The enemies only have light variation as well. You will approach every battle the same every time. All of these make for a game that was fun for the first 10 hours and increasingly dull after that. I only lasted 20 hours before deleting. lastly, this is not an open world game. The map allows you to warp to side mission areas that are not part of the main story line and are optional. That is it. That is the extent of the openness. There is no exploration. There is no ability to go off and do you own thing. You cannot go see a cool planet or asteroid belt or say, "Hey, what that over there?" Nope! Fixed linear progression. Zones are largely locked via story line progression as well.

This is a painful one for me, because I love ARPGs and I love space games. I enjoyed Everspace 1 but the roguelike nature just kind of left something to be desired. Then came Everspace 2 and promised a grand open world RPG- and they delivered that, minus the grand. Again, it's a painful one for me, but I have to be honest, Everspace 2 is the definition of disappointment. TL:DR they tried making a great Space Game + RPG, and ended up making an AWFUL Space Game, and a boring RPG. Visuals 7/10 The graphics in Everspace are pretty nice to look at, and should for the most part be pretty optimized. It's nothing magical, but it's good enough for sure. Gameplay 3/10 Calling the gameplay boring would be understatement of the century; even on hard combat is flat and unengaging- I didn't feel involved at all. It's literally either my numbers are higher than the enemy's or their numbers are higher than mine and in the latter case it simply means popping a consumable or a hilariously out of place "ult" that will pretty much deal with any situation immediately. You spend what feels like a quarter of your time in this game listening to stupid dialogue while you're in "Cruise" on your way to the next box to tick, the next asinine puzzle to solve or base to kill. Barely anything challenges you at all, you can cheese every single engagement with a room temp IQ. Flight is out of this world, if out of this world meant the game literally plays itself. You could play this game one handed with some mouse key rebinds and you wouldn't know the difference, so accessibility is at least a strong plus point lmao The missions lack any character at all, the 'distress calls' and 'unknown signals' are banal beyond definition. And then the RPG elements... holy crap where to even begin. You will upgrade component after component and literally not notice anything. I think if you were to give a random ship loadout to the lead item designer he would not be able to tell you what he was flying with. You know how in... any RPG ever, you would upgrade your inventory and it would feel fun and exciting and enable new gameplay opportunities? Yeah in Everspace that's reduced to an Excel Sum function. Like seriously, I cannot overstate how boring the progression in this game is. It is already so easy, you don't WANT to progress because God forbid it became any more idiot-proof. The word that comes to mind is sanitized. It feels sanitized of any excitement whatsoever. Everspace 2 is less exciting than Minesweeper. Story 1/10 Some of the Voice Actors really try, like Dax, but Delia and especially the main character Adam is absolutely insufferable. You will spend your entire playthrough listening to this comically lighthearted protagonist clown narrate everything- like his best friend is basically in a coma and he's all chipper, he sounds like he's never felt better, making obvious doltish jokes the entire time- the whole thing just feels so disjointed, like they couldn't decide if they wanted to tell a serious story or a silly one. The voice acting is often out of place, putting emphasis on the incorrect words and just generally feeling like it was an Act 1 Take 1. I'd easily have preferred this game without any voice acting at all. The story itself is so bland it pains me, it physically pains me how disinterested I am in it. The cutscenes are in the style of an incomplete storyboard after you land your ship at a terminal. It's basically a slideshow. Well-drawn, like the rest of the visuals, but it's a power point essentially. If it were an interesting power point, I'd cut it slack- but it's the most juvenile dialog you'll ever hear. Day after day I begrudgingly pressed play forcing myself to enjoy this game because how the hell can I not, it ticks all the boxes of other games that I love, but from the gameplay to the story to the audio to the puzzles it's just absolute banality. I've felt more challenged, more engaged and more interested in virtually every game of chess I have ever played with a family member. Video games are supposed to offer us more, and with the time and budget allotted to Everspace 2, it's a damn shame that it turned out as boring as this. If Rockfish uploaded the story uncut to YouTube it would outrank the entire category of videos you use to fall asleep to. I think if you: 1. Enjoy mobile game-level complexity; 2. Are a hyper casual gamer (and I mean hyper); 3. Who enjoys the absolute surface level features of an ARPG; and 4. Want to see the above executed... somewhat in space..? Then you should consider purchasing Everspace 2 under a heavy discount. If you: 1. Enjoy Space Games in general; 2. Enjoyed any generally well-received RPG from the last 20 years; 3. Were hoping to get challenged at an even elementary level. You will most likely be disappointed. I wish I trusted my initial instinct and refunded, but I gave it 10 more hours. I can't stomach any more.

If you are a fan of the old school games like DarkStar One and Freelancer, You will Love this game. Amazing graphics, Great controls and a good amount of exploration opportunity. There are tons of weapons, classes and special editions to them as well. you can also craft items, weapons and such if you unlock the recipe. If you like Action RPGs and Space Shooters, this is for you.

Ultimately, I felt that this was an inadequate sequel to the original. This game is definitely "bigger". It has more stuff in it. But it doesn't offer a substantially greater *variety* of experiences -- it just adds grind to a game that never needed such things. They should have stuck with the roguelite model, to be honest. It was more fun.

TL;DR: Four good stars out of four. (Gold stars are possible, but nothing in the game quite gave me that wow factor if you know what I mean. It's just a good, solid game that's well worth the money.) Graphics: Wonderful and colorful, but Adam's ship needs a bigger floodlight. Music: Fits with the game very well, and still has its moments to pop out unlike others that entirely fade into the background. (Supralight music is a bop.) Story: Quite nice. The beginning feels such a long ways away now that it's over... Gameplay: Nicely polished, arcade style, first/third person spaceship shooter controls. I played with keyboard and mouse, I cannot comment on how it feels with HOTAS/HOSAS/etc. Menus are good, but the landing menu always feels like there's something just a bit off. Maybe it's the having the shop, ship dealer, and jobs to the left of the hangar, maybe it's the hangar tab having nothing but a view of your ship and the quick restock/repair buttons, maybe it's the ship tab feeling a bit redundant since it only really offers your ship stats and devices, maybe it's the map being in just another tab instead of a separate window like I'm used to. It's probably just me. Crafting wasn't very intuitive at first since I didn't really have any blueprints and I think I unlocked it before I unlocked the ability to dismantle stuff. Now to dump another 50 hours into it trying for 100% completion...

As a 68 year old player who started Space Games with Elite on my BBC micro this is right up my street. Have reached a bit of a block having got to level 15 so no where to go from there, but still have a few jobs to do and main quest lines to complete. Main problem is that it is now expensive to get repairs done compared with the value of loot I seem to get, so may run into a complete stop when I can't afford to repair my craft. Looking forward to new releases and of course the full release when it comes.

The best space-sim sub-genre since Freelancer. Yes, it's THAT good. What type of game is it? Freelancer + ARPG (ex. Diablo 2 or Titan Quest style) + some light puzzles PROS: - breathtaking visuals - great soundtrack; from subtle sci-fi beats to almost melancholic synths - optimization (which is rarely good in this day and age) - QA done right, aka. no visible bugs - looting - inventory, crafting, upgrading - action - fast, but not chaos, with boosts/powers etc. as in ARPG spells alternatives - solid trading system - exploring secrets is rewarding + you'll get bonus creds and XP for clearing the location - story isn't in your face not to discourage exploration but is fairly interesting - devs were very brave not 100% listening to fans and bring Freelancer 2.0 but also taking some good advice into consideration - ship custimization - mining done right, not overwhelming or tedious - interesting, non typical for this type of games locations and story segments (won't spoil, you'll see at 2nd system) - PC friendly - plays amazing with KB+mouse, 1st person camera with and without cockpit, 3rd person, adjustable FOV, DLSS, lots of options... CONS: - random encounters aka. "unknown signal" could be more diverse - NOTE to DEVS - please add some variety and more mystery to it, thank you!

**Did not play beta or alpha or any version of the game prior to 01/18/2021** This is it. It's not fully baked but boy oh boy is it delicious. I grew up playing Wing Commander 3 in the late 90's and Freelancer in the early 2000's, birthing my love for space combat RPG's. I've been chasing the dragon ever since. I remember trying Everspace for the first time and it was not my cup of tea as a rogue-like. But it was so close to what I was searching for. Everspace 2 is it. It's in EA folks. You should set expectations as such, if you want to support the project. It's incredibly playable, feature rich, and gorgeous in its current state. It's fun to play, and wow did Rockfish games get a lot right. I cannot WAIT to see what is in store for the future of development. I've had one crash so far, and it was expected, as I was trying to get real fancy exiting cruise speed trying to pull off a disgusting amount of ship spins. My GTX 1070 Rog Strix OC edition running everything at EPIC settings did it's best. Otherwise the game runs very well for day 1 of EA. No bugs experienced or noticed so far, besides one crash due to pushing the limits of my system. I have no doubt with some time and more love from the Dev team, this game is going to be the start of something great. Perhaps even a new era of space combat rpg's if other studios take notice. Great job Rockfish games. Fly safe everyone. o7
