One of the most over-looked and under-appreciated shooters of all time! Great story, great weapons, great gameplay. A must-play for any FPS fan. Nobody does it like Raven.
The Premise

This review contains no spoilers.
Singularity is a sci-fi FPS set in both the present times and an alternate history 1950s Russia. After the discovery of a new element, E99, the secretive research island of Katorga-12 is built, however something goes terribly wrong. Captain Renko, along with his team, is sent by the US government to investigate these mysterious events: what they'll find will be much more than what they signed up for.
Quick Sum-Up

[th]🟩 The Pros[/th] [th]🟥 The Cons[/th]

1. Excellent atmosphere, consistent world-building. 2. Rewarding exploration component. 3. Satisfying combat feeling and pacing. 4. Good variety of upgrades to acquire. 1. Balance issues with several weapons and powers. 2. Second half of the game is disappointing. 3. Multiplayer is dead. 4. Human enemies' AI is mediocre. 5. Time manipulation is never used at full potential.

[th]🟨 Bugs & Other Issues[/th] [th]🔧 PC Specs[/th]

- Crosshair can't be disabled. - Tutorial hints can't be disabled. - Poor anti-aliasing implementation. - Ryzen 3900X - RTX 2080Ti - 32GB RAM - NvME SSD - 1440p Display

https://steamcommunity.com/sharedfiles/filedetails/?id=2546601229
In-Depth Analysis

Pros
1. The alternate-history Soviet Union, and the island of Katorga torn apart by temporal anomalies, compose a fascinating setting. There is a lot of care and attention to detail in every environment, with indirect storytelling playing an important part, supported by more traditional recordings, documents and dialogues. 2. Hidden around every corner and cranny, there will be tons of upgrade resources, but also lore files and bits of information helpful to make a clearer picture of the situation and characters. Those who take extra time to explore, will be rewarded both in gameplay aspects and lore insight, which blend seamlessly into the exploration component. 3. From bullet impacts to explosions, any given combat situation feels weighty and satisfying, with plenty of dismemberment on top. Covers breaking down, enemies flying away in pieces or contorting on the ground while mortally wounded are normal sights in the thick of the fray. Even if the gunplay is rough, the remaining action components make combat look and feel spectacular. 4. Both the character itself and the TMD can be upgraded with passive enhancements which can seriously raise the odds of surviving the dangers of Katorga. From better damage resistance to health on kill, or better total HP pools or longer oxygen reserves, there is a good diversity of such improvements distributed along the adventure - if one manages to find them.
Cons
1. Balance issues are plentiful in Singularity. Some powers, such as the "Deadlock" sphere capable of slowing down all enemies in a huge area, or the "Health on Kill" passive upgrade, make the game far too easy in most occasions (even on Hard). Conversely, some weapons are useless gimmicks one will never really use, while others are good for everything. 2. While the first half of the title proves to be an interesting, rather tense experience with scarce ammo and deadly enemies, the second half empowers the character too much, thus making most fights trivial. It also makes most stages into "shooting galleries" full of fodder with the occasional boss fight that however will also prove underwhelming. 3. The multiplayer component, pitting a human team versus a mutant team in various maps and a couple modes, is deserted, as expected from a 10+ years old game after all. It DOES still work server-wise (probably), but there isn't anyone to play with. That's a whole chunk of content down the drain. 4. While mutant AI is fine, humans prove too defensive, passive and at times braindead in their approach. While they do use cover and grenades at times, mostly they can be kited and funneled into doors to quickly dispatch them with area weapons, and also have a rather slow reaction time that will be far outclassed by any remotely decent FPS player. 5. The game tries to implement all the time manipulation powers in a consistent way in both combat, puzzles and exploration, but it feels like unused potential in many occasions. With the baseline created here, there could have been more diverse and impactful approaches with these mechanics, that however never came to be. https://steamcommunity.com/sharedfiles/filedetails/?id=2546601170
Gameplay Breakdown
Exploration Is performed on foot, and occasionally by swimming or using machinery like elevators. The world develops in a linear manner, with a sequence of more or less open areas often divided by one-way drops. Looking accurately around each area will reveal a bounty of items, including passive ability formulas, upgrade points (E99 Tech), weapon upgrade caches and many lore files to know more about the world and characters. Some of such items are in secret zones off the main path, but never too far. Using the TMD's powers to deteriorate, move or repair structures is an integral part of the exploratory process. Combat Plays out in a classic FPS fashion, with Renko being able to carry two weapons plus a special one, whenever found on the field. Normal weapons can be swapped at any Weapon Station or on-the-go if an enemy has a weapon players deem useful, the picked-up weapon will inherit all the passive upgrades installed on it, if any are present. Munitions can be replenished from other weapons or ammo caches found rather often around the map, Melee is a viable option to dispatch close enemies, however it has limited ammo with the TMD, without a free alternative which can be problematic. Enemies range from mutants to elite Soviet soldiers of several types, their variety doesn't become stale for the duration, fortunately. Environmental elements like barrels or structures can be thrown or altered with the TMD to gain advantages, temporal powers can have various effects on enemies such as killing them or mutating some into monsters. Character Management Is mainly performed at Stations, that allow spending E-99 Energy found in the world to upgrade the character with passive abilities, and also enhance weapons in damage, reload time and ammo capacity - each weapon has the same upgrades, with the same costs. Many passive skills require Formulas to be found as sort of "collectibles" in the world, else they will never be unlocked. This system ensures some progression form to look forward to until the end. Puzzles Mainly revolve around the temporal mechanics, and consist into restoring, altering and moving pieces of the environment with the TMD to gain access to the next areas. They are rather simplistic and never really pose a challenge. For instance, degrading a box to then slide it under a door, to then restore it to push the door upwards, is a recurring type of puzzle. https://steamcommunity.com/sharedfiles/filedetails/?id=2546600606
The Judgment: Decent
Complete Ratings List here It took me a little more than six hours to complete Singularity on Hard difficulty, while taking time to find secrets and explore each zone accurately. Replay value is very low, considering the linearity of gameplay and story. Multiplayer is dead. The quality is decent, however I'd suggest waiting for a sale before buying.
Want to see even more reviews of the same quality? An absolute shame what Activision has done with Raven. Singularity was a cry for help, and not enough of us listened... All dramatics aside, this was the first time in ten years that I've played Singularity again, and with a higher frame count than the console release (and a hack to fix the garbage FOV), it's still a lot of fun to play, even for a game that I managed to clear in 6 hours on Hard with no deaths. It's short, yes, but it hits what it needs to AND THEN SOME. Take your standard military shooter, then throw out the crap from it by killing it's embodiment (literally) in the first hour, then give the player a device that can alter the fabric of time itself IN THE MIDDLE OF A GUNFIGHT. Add on a minigun that is severly overpowered against every other weapon after all the upgrades, and it's a recipe for a great game, though one that clearly lacks some polish. It's final third suffers from a (let's get this game out by christmas) fever, which Activision is solely to blame for on that one, but does let you choose multiple endings (even if only one of those endings has any effort thrown into presentation). A must-play. If only Raven were allowed to make real games again, instead of being lumped into tech-work on Call of Duty games for the rest of time. A burden of endless monotony, to be lifted... nevermore...
Sci-fi/Horror Shooter: The Greatest Hits Compilation
Tracklist (including games released after 2010 because time is meaningless)

"Gravity Gun" and "Silent Protagonist", by Half-Life
"Bullet Time", by F.E.A.R.
"Special Powers to Aid the Shooting", by Bioshock
"Atmospheric" and "Mutants", by Metro 2033/Last Light
"Objective Beam", "Kinesis","Stasis" and "Bosses with Weak Points", by Dead Space
"Insta-Repair", by Red Faction: Armageddon
"Three Choices", by Mass Effect 3
Recommended? Yes, if you like FPS games, horror, convoluted time-travel plots, and amazing game-breaking powers. Singularity works on Windows 10. If it doesn't, [strike]just travel back to 2010[/strike] try different compatibility settings, running/not running the game as administrator, and re-installing PhysX. To avoid nausea and/or headaches, increase the FOV by using Flawless Widescreen or Widescreen Fixer.

One of the best time travel stories ever told filled with twists and turns, meaningful choices and interesting characters. I am shocked just how underrated this game is. The visuals look great, the time mechanics are well developed and the pacing of the game is great. The story is well told. If there is one drawback that the game has is that it is not so well optimized. Even with my GTX 1060 and i5 there were frame rate drops to the mid 40s from time to time. Nothing too distracting but they're there. I highly recommend this game to any fan of SciFi and FPS. The gunplay is frantic, there is a nice array of RPG elements thrown around, the emphasis on exploration rewards you with upgrades and the time mechanic is not only worked in puzzles but in combat as well. Oh and did I mention this game has multiple endings? Well worth your time.
