Brawlout just turned 2.0 & Dead Cells joins the party!

Two years ago, Brawlout hit Early Access on Steam, and it's been a crazy ride, filled with amazing people, some rough starts and millions of matches played.

We've been humbled by the responses from critics and players, both good and not-so-good. We've been blown away, with families excited to meet us face-to-face at events like Super Smash Con or E3 and by our passionate community who have stuck with us since our initial launch.

And we're just getting started.

We've been watching social media and working on the kinds of content people have been asking us for. With the 2.0 update, we're adding not only a new character and stage, but making every multiplayer game mode playable online and bringing our brand-new single-player mode to all platforms while delivering many of the balance and gameplay changes our community has long asked for.

Brawlout will continue to evolve this year, just like it has this last year with new content and community requested features, and we're grateful to everyone who's given us a chance and stuck with us. Brawlout would never have changed so much for the better without all of you.

We hope to see you all in the fight!

About the Game

A new challenger has appeared in the platform fighter arena!

Brawlout packs a punch with couch and online play modes, blending platform fighter mechanics and traditional fighting game play into a stylish and fluid battle royale.

Striking the balance between the growing competitive scene and the genre’s party game roots, Brawlout hopes to cater to the veteran platform fighter, the casual fan and the newcomer looking to make their mark.

Each character in Brawlout has their own unique playstyle, catering to specific character archetypes seen in other fighters. Whether you’re a die-hard grappler or a rushdown fiend, there is a fighter for you in Brawlout.

There are currently six original characters and four popular indie characters to choose from that allow for varied play styles:

  • Dead Cells

  • Yooka-Laylee

  • Guacamelee

  • Hyper Light Drifter
As well as cosmetic skins, each original Brawlout character has three Variants; alt versions of the character with different stats, outfits and even new moves. With these Variants, Brawlout’s cast numbers 25 individual fighters. Find the fighter and Variant that’s right for you and tear it up on the battlefield.

Combined with familiar movement techniques like wavedashing and airdodging, Brawlout adds some extra mechanics seen in other fighting games. The Rage Meter builds up as you both deal and take damage, allowing you either break combos with the Rage Burst or unleash hell with the Rage Mode. The Rage Burst pushes opponents back, breaking their combos and allowing players to create some breathing room at the cost of half their Rage Meter. If the meter fills, you can activate the Rage Mode, increasing the knockback you deal while reducing the amount you take.

As for modes, Brawlout has all you’d expect from a normal platform fighter and then some. Up to four players can compete in either Timed, Stock, Team Battles, FFA or Party Modes.

AI opponents are also available if you want to practice your team combos with a friend, or if you need to fill out a free for all. Train with Advanced Tutorials or go in for yourself in challenging Arcade Towers and the all new Trials mode.

The best underrated game I've played It's so underrated that if you read the reviews (most are from 2017 / 2018), they basically say it sucks or it's a terrible smash clone. The "Smash clone" label bothers me because with that logic every shooter should be called a doom clone and every 3D platformer is a Mario 64 clone. It's not fair to call any platform fighter a Smash clone because it stifles innovation on a beautiful underdeveloped genre that Smash created. It plays fast and floaty, which makes it unique as you don't have to sprint to move fast, even your default walk is quick. As a whole it has more in common with Smash 64 but with Melee's speed and combat (no shields or throws). Instead of a smash move you get a rage meter, which if filled half way you can interupt a combo or save yourself from the ledge, while a fully charged rage makes your knockbacks better (the red bar in under the percentage) Content wise it has about the same as Smash 64; a Trials mode that gets harder the higher you climb the ladder (combat, smash the targets, etc), and a normal arcade where you fight rounds. Both of which you can quit out at anytime and it saves your progress. No adventure mode or subspace emissary, or items though anywhere in the game. It's a fun low budget title that's surprisingly a lot of fun and a welcome addition to the smash genre. Basically If you love Smash 64 but with melee's speed, combat and great visuals you'll have a lot of fun.

What a giant disappointment. I was early access, I put money into it before it was a full release and the switch gets the full version first?. (which by the way isnt finished either, see below*) How insulting to the playerbase that supported it and because of that no one plays this, so expect the online mode to be a joke. I want to critique this game for what it really offers but its 1/13/18, the full switch release was 12/19/17. They barely updated it to Ver.0.92, yeah, woo hoo. So I can already expect that the PC version of this game is going to be treated like the ugly stepchild. New* 1/27/18 Thought I would critique what is there, since I can assume this is what I am going to get. Brawlout is a mediocre clone of Super Smash Bros Brawl. It feels mostly loose and less refined than its accomplished source material. It has no content other than online and a training mode, which there is no playerbase so all it actually has is training. The characters are boring. No reason to nit-pick though because that is all there is to say about this game, that it is a mediocre clone. Yet, this is a pretty game. I can only assume there was love for the project at some point. Sadly that is all I can do with this game, assume. New* So both games are unfinished Originally posted by >:3 Robo_Leader, DEV / MOD of discussions hub [Originally posted by TheLightningYu: Actually that's something which i don't understand as well. Switch-Version seems to be finished, yet on PC there isn't the Game out yet? Kinda strange. I mean i would've understand it if i look at Games like Monster Hunter World, which are purely PS4 Leadplattform and they have to begin the development for PC yet due they want an proper Port... but Brawlhalla is already in development for PC and yet they can't push out 1.0... while Switch Version which clearly is a port is already finished...] A lot has to be re-written from the ground up to support both platforms simultaneously going forward. The PC version relies on Steamworks for leaderboards, matchmaking and other things that have to be re-written for the Switch (The Switch version is currently missing these features). Likewise, a lot of features that were written for the Switch version of the game need to be brought over to the PC version, such as the progression system. Changes that don't involve these rewrites are being brought to each platform in the meantime, which is why the PC version is currently ahead in gameplay and balance tweaks. The team is not forgetting about PC, 1.0 is still on the way. My response ["(The Switch version is currently missing these features)." Sooo, the PC version is "currently ahead in gameplay and balance tweaks."? and the switch port has all the fun stuff that matters? To be frank, I think you guys should of made a finished version of the game/product FIRST before trying to port it to another console. I think it is a really poor excuse and even more insulting of an answer to why we don't have 1.0.] Wow, thanks

I do like the game, and I do think it has potential, but i wouldn't really reccomend it until it's complete, feels very bare bones for a $20 purchase.

    https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=D7lOK7W04V8
First 3D Brawler on PC
For long time developers had oppoturnity to create a great 3D Brawler for PC, yet years have passed and no one really gave a shot at it (We had obviously have 2D ones tho) and i'm really glad that Angry Mob Games decided to give a shot at it. Brawlout is really fun, smooth, well optimized and clean looking Brawler game, similar to Smash and Playstation battle royale. Keep in mind its still in "BETA" so lot of features are not there yet like Single-Player campaign or vast collection of characters, modes and stages (they are likely to come soon however). The price is not steep so i recommend picking the game out with a friend or two and have some fun on the arena.

"As well as cosmetic skins, each original Brawlout character has three Variants; alt versions of the character with different stats, outfits and even new moves. With these Variants, Brawlout’s cast numbers 25 individual fighters." Do you remember Smash Bros. Wii U? Maybe you haven't even played it, but it happens to be my favorite Smash game for one reason alone: All non-DLC characters had unlockable alternative special moves (two variants for Up-Special, two for Down-Special, etc.) I really enjoyed the variety that these variant moves offered, especially when I wasn't satisfied with a character's original move. When I read that Brawlout included such a feature, I was eager to purchase the game (albeit on sale) and start unlocking the variant characters; some of them looked really interesting . A grappling, four-armed Street Shark? Yes! Well, I unlocked and tested my first variant character today, the punk-looking hedgehog (whatever his name is), and I am sorely disappointed. I was expecting to see some edgy new moves with this character, but all of his moves are the same, except one. One. They changed one move ! Instead of his hovering electro-ball, he now has a Sonic-like, aerial spin attack. That is literally the only change that I've noticed. I'm hardly even motivated to play the game anymore at this point. The developer advertises a roster of 25 characters, but it really is just 10 characters, 6 of whom have a different aesthetic appeal or "flavor" from their standard counterparts. Even the stages have this problem: The stage selection would be satisfactory if it weren't for the fact that some of them are effectively just palette swaps (e.g., switching day for night). I am certainly among those who say that they wanted to like this game. It really did look fun, and I was especially drawn to it because it includes Juan from Guacamelee, and I loved that game (and its sequel). If you're just looking for a platform fighting game that's distinct from Smash, then it's worth giving the game a try. The game's failure to meet my expectations, however, prevents me from recommending it to the general gaming community.
TL;DR
Even though it's better than Icons: Combat Arena, this is not a great game or a bad game. It's average, you might have a lot of fun with this game.... If you're drunk
Introduction
Continuing my Super Smash Bros. clone adventures (if you haven't read my review for my previous super smash clone I reviewed, be sure to check it out here) I decided to take a look at Brawlout because I remembered a user who's good friends with a friend of mine helped out on this game as a creative writer. I wanted to take a look at Brawlout to see what the fuss is all about, so let's take a look and see if this game is any better than OR worse than Icons: Combat Arena.
Characters
Character roster is a mixed bag, I'll start off by saying that the characters are AT LEAST original, at least they're not clones from any of the Super Smash Bros games. If you saw Icons: Combat Arena, you'll know that few of the characters were copied from Super Smash Bros. melee. The roster also has three 3rd party characters from indie games such as The Drifter from Hyper Light Drifter, Juan from Guacamelee and out of nowhere Yooka-Laylee. The roster also has "Character Variations" sorta like variations in Mortal Kombat X but only they different characters, for example Paco (or as I like to call him "General Pepe the Frog Grievous") has two variations, one that looks like Sharkboy's missing brother but with four arms and the other that is Zoro Pepe Grievous or something like that. It's a very interesting idea but poorly executed, couldn't it be like before confirming your selection you get a choice of which variation you want just like in Mortal Kombat X? Still though it's not to say that most of these characters or their variations aren't bad. As for the designs of the characters they're good, except for King Apu or as I like to call him "Discount Thanos *ding* +1 sin". Another problem I have for this character roster is the fact there lacks a lot of sword based characters. In fact take away all of the third party characters and you have no weapon based characters and also the third party brawlers don't get their own character variations, so sad. As for the animations on these characters, it looks nice. Nothing choppy or sloppy, but nice.
Lootboxes
Before buying a game I like to check to see what reviews pop up from these games just to make sure my hard earned cash doesn't go into the trash. Thankfully Steam has a refund policy so that I can get my money back without any violence. From what I read, people did not like the game because of the fact that there was lootboxes in the game. Well... I can't say that they were lying because there are lootboxes in this game but you don't need to use any special currency to unlock them nor that you can use real money to buy the in-game currency. Currency in-game is unlocked through playing the game. However, it will take you FOREVER to get a lot of this stuff, it will be a bore. The lootboxes contain a shitload of stuff. This includes: avatars, KO effects, character colors and character variations. While you can unlock character variations through leveling up (which I'll talk about later") you cannot unlock their colors they have, which is a pain in the butt. It's also worth mentioning that you're not unlocking lootboxes, instead they're pinatas. There's flamingo pinatas which it gives you avatars and emojis, it's costs cheap. There's the Llama pinatas which gives you character colors and character variations. Lastly there's the unicorn pinatas that looks like that white unicorn plush doll from despicable me, that pinatas gives you the fancy KO effects or something like that. You can also get Llama pinatas through completing single player towers.
Gameplay
The gameplay is your traditional super smash bros. gameplay, nothing different like what playstation all-stars battle royale offered. The game also has a rage meter of some kind, as you keep on fighting or take damage your rage meter builds up. Once it fully builds up, you can use it to boost your strength and speed sorta like what the God of War trilogy had or something like that... but without the invincibility. Many of the characters aren't that overpowered, I had a fun time playing as Chief feathers, Paco, The Drifter and Yooka-Laylee. There's also a leveling up mechanic in this game, sorta like what playstation all stars battle royale had. You can unlock character variations by leveling up your characters, however leveling up your character is so annoying. It would take you like over 100 games to level up your characters and unlock their variations, pain in the butt. Playstation allstars battle royale did it a lot better even though that game had a shitload of DLCs. I also love the pause menu, every time you pause the game, the music gets suppressed or something like that. When you unpause the game you get a 3,2,1 thing sorta like what those mobile endless runner game only it's Are, you, ready? It's a nice touch, I like it. You're also unable to change the game around, that means you're force to play with stock and a time limit. Something I don't like about the game. Also the taunting is emoticons, no animations, just emoticons. Lastly you cannot shield in this game, so good luck to any diehard super smash bros fanboys out there who probably did not buy this game and instead waited for super smash bros. ultimate.
SFX, Soundtrack and voice acting
The punching sound effects are very... satisfying to listen to? I know they're obvious stock punching sound effects that you would find on youtube. Depending on your point of view, you might find these sounds fun to listen to or very irritating to hear over and over again. As for the soundtrack, it sounds good. Most of the songs go well with the maps. As for the voice acting... well there isn't really that much voice acting at all, no grunting, no KO sounds, no dialogue spoken out, no catchphrases. Barely do you hear any grunt or noises coming out of the characters. At least it's not as annoying as bayonetta's bitch screaming.... fuck you I hate her screaming in Smash Wii U
Lore
Just like Icons: Combat Arena there is really isn't enough details about the world build for brawlout. I really don't know why these characters are fighting, where they're from, why they have this brawlout tournament, where this is all taking place, where these locations are and how they fit in with the story of the game. Not only that, but during the single player tower mode, every time you're about to fight a character it brings up some dialogue sorta like what Mortal Kombat X or Injustice 2 did. But it does it really poorly, I guess it's for the fans to figure out the explanation behind this or something like that, I don't know, the story really doesn't matter to be honest since there is really no story mode in this game. Just endings... sorta like what mortal kombat had.
Controls
The controls are average, just like playstation all stars and brawlhalla (which that game will be reviewed at another time) you jump with a press of a button. Not hitting up on the D-Pad, just a press of a button. It will probably confuse a lot of you that are familiar with playing super smash bros. for me I can get use to it. Other than that the controls are responsive. Which is good.
Conclusion
Just like Icons: Combat Arena, this game could've been something. I wouldn't say it's bad as Icons: Combat Arena as there is a lot fun to have in this game. It's just poorly executed is what it is. It isn't early access so I can't say they cannot fix the game, but what I could say is that if they ever make a sequel, they need make better than it's predecessor. This includes making unlockables easier to unlock, improving the leveling up system, add more details to the lore and adding a story mode. Other than it's decent.

I liked this game initially, and after about 5 hours it dawned on me that I was playing a clunky mess. The game seems pretty fun from the videos and trailers, but in actual gameplay, everything is painful to use and do. Animations are all over the place and matchmaking is essentially dead half the time. $20 is absolutely too much. If it was free? Maybe worth a shot. Pros: Fun Characters and Movesets Great Concept for Movement Options The Stages are super unique and fun to play on. Cons: Terrible Excecution for those Movement Options Everything looks incredibly clunky and slow. Everything FEELS incredibly clunky and slow to use. $20 was a huge waste and I want a refund badly. Apparently this game might go free to play, and if it does, 1. That is the best course of action for this game's development. 2. It would be the biggest slap in the face to everyone who bought the game and didn't enjoy it. If you are looking for a smash game, stay clear of this mess. Download Dolphin and play melee or PM. Want a smash clone? Play Brawlhalla or Rivals of Aether. Even with their flaws, they are still polished and fun games in their own respects. And I can tell what I'm looking at. Which is always nice. solid 3/10
