If you're like me, you probably saw the new skilltrees and thought "well I don't really care about the arms race, but I might as well buy very expensive skill trees, because they're going to give me more options!" It would be a shame, if Class Mods to support those skill trees would be included in a seperate DLC... WHICH IS EXACTLY WHAT THEY DID!!! I can't believe that there's one legendary class mod connected to those 4 skilltrees, which you can gain solely gain through the arms race mode. For normal class mods, like you gain for the other skilltrees, you have to buy the Directors Cut DLC as well. This DLC in itself is a scam. If you want really want these extra skilltrees, consider buying Season Pass 2 as a whole.

Do NOT get this DLC. It adds 4 skill trees, one for each character. I got this DLC ONLY for one of those skill trees, and ended up not using it anyway. (It was Zane's, the Operative's, for reference.) It also adds an Arms Race gamemode. You spawn somewhere with no guns and no way of dealing damage besides three grenades, and you have to find guns. While avoiding enemies, who DO have guns. No action skills either, so you can't summon a mech or a drone or your pet or anything to help you deal with the enemies. Also, if you find any legendary weapons from killing something? Too bad, can't use it until you get it out of the gamemode! Can't have you actually doing the rest of this mission "EASILY" now can we, huh? I'll consider, MAYBE, changing my review if you let me bring friends into Arms Race without forcing them to also buy this DLC. Until you do that or make the DLC super-super-super cheap, this review stays at a negative. EDIT: Okay, so if you use game start to do ANYTHING except "Slam!" you don't start with a gun and a shield. And even if you do, you still gotta find the gun/shield chest. However with that gun/shield chest it's a lot simpler. ... That said, this DLC is not worth full price. Expert marketing tactic, pricing the dlc way higher than it should be so when it goes on sale people think "wow this dlc is cheaper than normal" instead of thinking "wow this dlc is now normal priced"

Arms race is fun, but locking a enitre skill tree for all vault hunters behind a 15 dollar paywall is really shitty, get this on sale or in a bundle with all the dlcs, preferably all on sale too

If you don't care about completing the B3 achievements, there is nothing in this DLC worth paying for or wasting your time. It's basically B3 in a Battle Royale format. Except you don't get to use your skill tree or weapons. I got this in a bundle so my cost is probably less than $2 and I still think that is over priced. $15 is an insane asking price. Sadly, if you want to 100% the game, you get the joy of having to grind out "extracting" weapons. Sometimes I wonder when Game Devs are making crap like this if they ever consider if something is fun or not. This isn't fun. It just feels like a cash grab.

The Arms Race mode is nothing but misleadingly marketed. It isn't some revolutionary Roguelike mode where every run is a bit different and at the end you extract your gear. Arms Race is 30 minutes of new content that the game expects you to do ad infinum if you want any of the items that only drop from it, let alone a good roll on them. There are maybe a dozen different enemy types in the arena, and the final boss is always the same. It tries to be cute and novel by not letting you take in your gear or use your skills, but these just make it even more of a slog, especially not having your skills. Save yourself the money and the buyer's remorse.

If you are looking for a TL;DR, this DLC is not worth it. If you have a few minutes to waste, read on intrepid soul. The new cosmetics are free for anyone who already owns the original Season Pass which I think is pretty swell of Gearbox. So credit where credit is due. The cosmetics are decent, the theme is interesting and overall they are a nice little slice of content. The new skill trees vary greatly in value. Amara tightens her grip on the "Goddess of Damage" title with an even better Action Skill than the ones she already had and another overpowered skill tree that will probably star in a new set of youtube videoes showing Amara doing damage in exponential numbers. Zane's skill tree helps his gameplay; he has always been the odd duck of the Vault Hunters with a poorly synergistic set of skill trees and weak specializations. Along with the rebalance patch, he should be well on his way to viability. The main problem with Zane is that he is gimmicky, relying on his few good skills and a few weapons for proper builds. Every Zane tends to play the same. Hopefully this will sort itself out in a bit. FL4K gets some handy new tools as well as crowd control abilities that he sorely lacked, The loader bot is both fun and interesting, especially when used to blow up Freddie's mustachioed face. The gravity trap can be fun even if its bossing utility is somewhere between slim and none. More importantly, there are some new durability skills which FL4K can really use. The new capstone in particular looks to be handy when in a heavy fire fight. Moze gets the shaft and that's about it. Iron Cub is a huge step down from Iron Bear; Auto Bear actually does what Iron Cub is supposed to do but much better. The new skill tree does not add anything new to Moze's arsenal except an increased movement speed skill that she has to have Iron Cub or Auto Bear out to actually take advantage of. The new skill tree's not only gimmicky but its gimmicks (damage over time effects proccing buffs and increased fire damage) are notably weaker than Moze's existing gimmicks of being a bullet hose and EXPLOSIONS. Why did anyone think this was a good idea I don't know. Maybe it was some head honcho's brilliant idea and no one else could gainsay it. Perhaps the whole idea was to keep players in Iron Bear for longer periods so that the core gameplay of the Looter Shooter could be safely ignored. Speaking of which, Arms Race. Where do I begin. There are three broad categories of people who play Borderlands. One are shooter gamers, the kind of people with excellent twitch reflexes, lots of friends who also play shooters and a good chance that they overlap with people who enjoy battle royale games. These people will enjoy Arms Race plenty. Then come the kind of gamer who lives to tinker with builds, try out wacky weapons and look for interactions. For these gamers Arms Race will be outright MADDENING since they cannot do any of the above but have to grit their teeth since some of the best weapons are ONLY in Arms Race. Lastly are those who are into Borderlands for the humor, story and quirkiness. They generally aren't shooter gamers primarily, there are likely some lured in by Tales from the Borderlands and then started on the mainline series (just as planned!). For these gamers, they will find Arms Race unappealing since very little of the above applies. In other words, Arms Race not only is irrelevant to the new skill trees but it also hold not too much appeal for a large plurality of BL3's install base. Packaging them together is like selling a set of socks and pineapples. Sure some people want socks and some people want pineapples but how many people want pineapples AND socks. Maybe gamers will buy the Designer's Cut for one or the other but this degrades goodwill since they feel that they are paying for extraneous content. One reason I did not shell out for the Season Pass 2 is simply because I want mainly story content; I am not willing to pay sight unseen for more junk like Arms Race. Also. Gearbox? Stop punishing people for having their friends move on to other games. So much end game content is basically pitched to four player co-op that solo players are feeling kind of neglected. Arms Race is essentially generic vanilla shooter with BL3 assets and a large RNG factor. You aren't fooling anybody with all that talk. It is blatant that it is a money grab with minimal coding effort. Playing solo takes the RNG factor and effectively injects it with eridium. My personal verdict on Arms Race? Boring. Constrictive. Unfunny. I never thought I would ever say that about Borderlands content (I even had kind words for the Pre-Sequel!). It neither plays or feels like Borderlands. If I wanted a Battle Royale game, I would have bought one.

This was a shameless move by gearbox. What could have easily been an update became a sleazy cash grab. Will you have fun while playing this new addition - Yes, but is it really worth the extra money - Hell no. Unless gearbox decides to add some full story driven content, I don't see the point of buying this at all.
