Was really apprehensive to play an older game, but very glad I did. The story and environment are stellar, (Who knew art deco and blood go really well together) the only complaint I have is the controls are a little old and the game crashes occasionally.

As a first-time player of the game, I was deeply satisfied with the graphics, which are great due to bugs being fixed. Gameplay-wise, I enjoyed the vast assortment of weaponry which I thought was only possible in some RPG's and magic games. This, combined with FPS gameplay made the game more memorable with the right atmosphere for a game so graphic, with very fitting visuals and background noises/music. Though the hacking is very troublesome and time-taking, it gives you a sense of dread as time slowly runs out. If you have wanted to freeze your enemies whole, send an electric blast, or send an army of insects while equipped with a machine gun, this is the game you do not want to miss out on. If you do not enjoy FPS games or are easily disgusted by graphic visuals, then you do not have to play it. Thank you for reading my first review.

Would you kindly add the following line to your launch parameters so you don't have to deal with that ridiculous 2K launcher: "BioShockHD" -run %command%

"We all make Choices, But in the End our choices make us."

It's hard to write about a game as classic as Bioshock. I remember renting this game for xbox 360 from a Blockbuster that I worked at in 2008. I didn't know what it was, but I had just come off one of the best gaming experiences of my life in Mass Effect and wanted something new. Different. Unique. Bioshock promised that and delivered back then. Bioshock: Remastered managed to re-deliver on that original promise of being a shooter unlike any other. In a year unlike any other, (2020) and whose implications for our world are equally as terrifying as the game's masked lunatic drug addicts with magic powers and little girls that drain blood from murder victims. I decided to play Bioshock again for one reason. I needed something different. I had been playing a lot of souls like, horror, rpg, platforming, puzzle, adventure, shooter... basically every genre one can imagine exists in 2020 while stuck at home. Bioshock: Remastered was the only thing in my massive library of backlogged games that stuck out as something different from all the other things. Like I said: "It Delivered" again. It broke me out of a rut and got me interested in revisiting old favorites again, now that it had been a decade or more since I last thought about them.

    Story

You begin Bioshock as a man named Jack on an unknown flight off to some mysterious destination for some unfamiliar reason. As you light up your smoke (it is 1960 after all, did I mention that?) and look to open a gift given to you by your parents... the plane ignites and crashes into the ocean. The sole survivor, you find a light house in the middle of the ocean that is more than it seems. This is RAPTURE! An underwater city built by a man named Andrew Ryan. Rapture was a haven for Science, Industry and Art undisturbed by intervention from governments, religion, or other social agencies. Believing real progress couldn't be made while under the gaze of society and it's laws and morals. As Ryan says:

"It wasn't impossible to build a city under the ocean, it was impossible to build Rapture anywhere else!"

Arriving in the city you quickly realize things are not as amazing and as great as they seem from the introduction played on the projector as you are lowered into the dark ocean. Met immediately by blood and violence you set off into Rapture taking instruction from a man named Atlas looking for his family and you are now his only hope. Now would you kindly find a crowbar or something and help him out? You do. You find out Rapture has been in a massive and sharp decline. A class war has broken out and the poor (construction workers who built the city, pretty much) have no jobs and are unable to fit in or afford a life among all the other perfect specimens of humanity. The best of the best that Rapture is made of. A new technology, known as Plasmids, have not only given people what basically equals Magic powers, but it has driven them insane and the entire city either lies dead, dying, or are the ones doing the killing. Known as Splicers, few left in Rapture are truly human anymore and this dark, deep, isoloated city at the bottom of the ocean has become a horror show. You are now a part of it. Along with several power mad, totally psychopathic, murder loving artists, scientists, and socialites.

    Gameplay

Bioshock is a first person shooter before anything else. One of the first of it's kind to have such a unique atmosphere and RPG like mechanics. While the shooting isn't the best of the bunch, especially in 2020 when this has basically been perfected; the weapons, abilities, and all the other mechanics come together to form an immersive and satisfying FPS. Weapons are pretty standard by modern expectations. A pistol, shotgun, assault rifle, crossbow... but also some unique things like a research camera and chemical thrower, all very mechanical and steampunk. All weapons have several different ammo types you can find or craft, along with 3 upgrades each. Where bioshock gets interesting is with it's plasmids (spells). You have your fireball and electric blast powers (that will melt ice, set enemies on fire, or electrocute enemies standing in water) but you also have insect swarm, with bugs crawling around and beneath your skin on screen, and Telekenisis (to throw those pesky grenades right back at em!) among many others with many varying applications. You can buy and sell supplies at vending machines:

WELCOME TO THE CIRCUS OF VALUES!

that yell that at you as well as hack literally anything mechanical around for extra materials or discounts. And this game is pretty much steampunk, so almost everything is a machine. Hacking takes form of individual tunnel puzzles making you connect the flowing ooze from one end of a block to another by rearranging tiles to point the ooze in the correct direction. At first all of this seems a little unwieldy. Hacking takes you out of the gameplay time and space, switching weapons, ammo, powers, etc... isn't as easy or quick as it should be. I was quite frustrated for the first hour or so when I realized I was accidentally pumping my anti-personel rounds into a turret. Like most games, with a little bit of practice and persistence (and upgrades) I was hacking like a pro and flinging my powers and weapons around like I had been doing it my whole life.

    Performance

There were no noticeable bugs at all during my play through of Bioshock: remastered. I'm including this section because I have read quite a few reviews about constant crashing or other issues and I am happy to say I didn't have any of these. I experienced one crash during the game that cost me about 5 minutes of play time with about 13ish hours of playtime total. I played at 1080p with all options turned to max at a solid 60 fps or above the entire time with what I consider a mid tier gaming PC. If that's all you're looking for then you will probably be stoked and have no issues.

    Summary

Overall Score: 9/10 Why play?: Bioshock is considered a "Must Play" video game by most of the industry and is considered to be one of the greatest video games of all time. A demonstration of video games as an art form. I agree with this. Why you shouldn't play?: If a visual overhaul isn't good enough to get you to play a 12 year old game. If you scare easy or have Thalassophobia. (Although my wife with Thalassophobia says Bioshock isn't bad in that regard.) There really isn't much more to say. If you haven't played Bioshock yet then you're either just getting into these types of games, or actively decided not to play it for some reason. With a perfect blend of Horror, Science, Steampunk, Magic, Mystery, and of course SHOOTING... with a story that is a must, if you believe video games are an art form, and with two sequels that are also really strong, you can't go wrong here with the upgraded visuals of the remastered version.

Now, would you kindly mark this review as helpful and give me an award.

No additional account, no unnecessary launcher, no denuvo, no epic exclusivity, no microtransactions, just a video game as it always should be.

The publisher 2K did a "Quality Of Life" patch which destroyed Bioshock's quality of life. As of September 2nd the 2K launcher is now a mandatory download in order to play Bioshock Remastered. The 2K launcher has a great deal of issues ranging from annoying to outright malicious. Exhibit A) The 2K launcher is incredibly buggy. Exhibit B) Linux users can no longer play Bioshock Remastered. (Possibly Fixed Now) Exhibit C) Steam Deck users can no longer play Bioshock Remastered. (Now Fixed) Exhibit D) In order to play, you must be connected to the internet. Exhibit E) Many of the games that now use the 2K launcher are having performance problems because of the launcher. Exhibit F) The 2K launcher conflicts with many mods including Steam Workshop mods. Though Bioshock does not incorporate Steam Workshop, games like XCOM 2 do. At this time, a sizable amount of mods out of the 7,524 Workshop mods for XCOM 2 do not function. Many mods outside of Workshop also do not function, and thus any mods that were made for Bioshock Remastered are now possibly incompatible. Exhibit G) The most malicious of the issues is the 2K launcher's data usage. Take 2 Interactive (the parent company of 2K) states the following in their privacy policy: "The information we collect may include personal information such as your first and/or last name, e-mail address, phone number, photo, mailing address, geolocation, or payment information. In addition, we may collect your age, gender, date of birth, zip code, hardware configuration, console ID, software products played, survey data, purchases, IP address and the systems you have played on. We may combine the information with your personal information and across other computers or devices that you may use." You agree that your data can be sent to "countries that may not have equivalent data protection". Exhibit G Continued) As you can read from above, they are collecting an obscene amount of data from you. The reason for the launcher's inclusion is not for "Quality Of Life", but instead to make money off of YOU. I was personally looking forward to playing the XCOM reboot sitting in my Steam library. Now, I will not be installing or playing any of 2K's games. Moving forwards, 2K will not get a single cent from me, even if they remove the launcher and make amends. The fact they so easily backstabbed their fans for data money is appalling. Even more appalling is 2K's utter disrespect for their own developers by making their work unplayable for many and marred by technical issues. Not to mention how many of the mods for their games have become null-and-void; directly spitting in the face of their dedicated modding communities. Edits: I have learned that the 2K launcher no longer opens on Steam Deck, allowing the games to be playable. Linux compatibility may have been fixed. Many people had problems using controllers due to the launcher, this has also possibly been fixed. Before editing I said that ALL mods were incompatible now, this information was wrong but still many are indeed non-functioning. I collected the information in my review from a handful of other Steam reviews strung through various 2K launcher infected games. Some of the information I had was outdated or incorrect and so I felt I had to clarify and edit my review as to not mislead. Thank You for reading
