Edited 7/4 - Happy 4th Americans! Pretty good so far. Almost 8h gameplay I can tell it's worth the $16. First Actions - Spent 30m getting out of debt. (I suggest salvaging, you get lucky with a merchent ship and you're good to startout) - Dropped my city, started getting small flow of income. - Starting particpating in battles with other cities vs. Pirates (don't want to choose sides yet b,c I dont want an enemy city to wreck me) - Got a small city and 4 sectors to my name. Money Tip I've learned - I use my income/min as an upkeep. I make my real money from mining planets and selling them at my local market + friendly AI market. Doing this I get +5 relation from the ai I trade with while keeping my local market prices high. If I'm lucky I'll find a very cheap resource at an AI market and sell it at my market if I can sell it for more. Developers have stated that they will be doing WEEKLY updates, so looking forward to that. In it's current state you will get $16+ worth of enjoyment. Once more and more content gets added every week you'll enjoy it anymore in addition you're giving the devs more financial fuel to make the development better. Game CLEARLY has a lot of potential to be simplistic but at the same time complex. If devs come out with frequent updates I'll be playing this game for a while. (Note: If you pick up this game, when you buy a ship, don't click it unless you want to buy it for sure.)

great EA release and a little hidden gem. you can compare the setup to games like SPAZ and co. top-down flyin through the galaxy and encountering lots of random-generated events: help diplomats, traders when they are attacked by pirates hunt down pirates for bounties mine asteroids trade on top of that a 4xgame is playin around you; other factions build/upgrade their stuff and engage in relations with each other and yourself, also you can build an empire yourself, owning sectors, building a city, mining-bases, etc. combat feels already very good, with a cool-down and ressource based skill system, complete freedom concerning your loadout and the ability to generate your own fleets. all in all this game is already looking realy good and offeres alot of content for your money; if you like sci-fi-spacegames give it a shot. i can definitly recommend this pearl.

I really like the core of this game. The combat is fun, the base building is shallow but fun. The missions are fun, the first 50 times.... The problem I have is that there just isn't enough of anything. Not enough variety in ships, missions, zero story, diplomacy is almost non existent. After a few hours you will start to notice so many quality of life things that are missing that you have in other games. Such as: - No minimap (the only way to see enemy fleets approaching is to open the map screen which prevents you from doing anything else) - You can only control one fleet and one flagship. You can't swap between multiple ones. so if you're off attacking someone and your home gets attacked you have to go all the way back. - The AI just grows at an insane rate. Faster than I could possibly keep up. - The missions become a grind. Flying around collecting things, fighting pirates, over and over. This game needs more before I can recommend it. I hope the devs stay on it though because at its core it has a lot of potential.

about 10 hours in, This is a great game! a lot of apsects need polishing and the devlopers are clearly working late nights to do exactly this. This game dynamics and stratagies have changed a bit between every update and as a fellow devloper its quite awesome to beable to exspirence this on the other end. Theirs no FAQ or real good unit guide, i have scribbled down a bunch of notes to what unit i was for what i am doing. I have a fleet layout for what type of work i am doing Missles for attaching large slow ships and terrroties, beams for getting rid of pirates, Shreaders and plasma guns somewhere inbtween.

Holy crap is this game ever addicting. Like to create your own space empire? Check. Like to upgrade said empire? Check. Like to tool around and create wicked fleets? Check. Like to rule the galaxy by creating strategic outposts and alliances, and then betray them at the last minute to snatch power? Check. This game is very, very good. This is a very good space simulator that revolves around strategy, diplomacy, tactics, managing economies and upgrading in order to survive among different AIs. The gist of the game: You are given the options to rule the game via 3 different victories: diplomacy, economy or war. You can create a world based on different variables (size of map, number of AI, learning curve, handicap, etc) and then you are placed in a hex-based map with AI. You are able to create a city easily by following a set of arrows that point you in the right direction to build the city. Once established, you can expand the city via radar outposts, mining outposts or military outposts. The key is to create a good economy by mining nearby planets either by setting up mining outposts or running mining runs in nearby asteroid belts. By building outposts in adjoining hexes you are able to expand your overall territory and increase your economy by charing a tariff based on the territory you control. The pros: There is a very good learning curve with this game. The devs have incorporated a number of very clever responses by the AI. As you expand your territory you will likely piss off nearby AI who will declare themselves hostile to you and repeatedly try to destroy your outposts. Similarly, I've had AIs try to attack me and I've responded with my fleet and destroy them along with their outposts. The AI will then abdicate for a short time by offering you war reparations. If you repeatedly deny them then this incurs the wrath of other nearby players. You can customize most likely ANYTHING in this game. Being extremely modular, you are able to tack on a variety of different components to your bases. Each individual component is upgradable if you have the cashs and the minerals. Similarly you can upgrade your ship, its weapons and system along with your fleet and fleet size by upgrading things like your hangar. Once you have a sizable fleet with sizable cargo bay you can advance pretty far. The game balances itself out because neighbouring AI will fight each other, thereby preventing any one AI by leading and winning. You can easily play the same game for 5-6 hours with AI tied neck to neck. You can also lead early on and forget about neighbouring AI who suddenly declare themselves hostile and then proceed to blow your city to hell with a massive fleet. The game's myriad upgrading possibilities force the gamer to balance creating an empire, defending it, expanding it, creating economic pathways, upgrading those outposts, creating and managing fleets and attacking, while managing alliances. The graphics are decent and are created with the Unity engine. For most systems this game shouldn't be a problem. The accompanying music is spacey and adds to the atmosphere of the game. Cons: Building components to your base isn't always easy and takes some manoeuvering around. It would be nice to have it easier. If you annihilate someone from the game IMMEDIATELY all of the other races consider you a warmonger and still send their entire fleets after you in hopes of destroying you. This is one drawback because in war people will not necessarily fight against you if you kill off another AI. This communistic aspect of the game is a drawback and I hope it gets addressed later on by the devs. Still playing it after purchasing it 40% off. I am excited to continue playing. edit: I am recently experiencing consistent fluctuating frame rates from 11 fps to 41 fps despite having a solid rig. It makes piloting ships across the map difficult given how laggy it becomes. Hopefully the devs will address this because it is starting to become a tad irritating.

At first I was going to rate this game positive. It has a nice concept with an interesting and new blend of global strategy and third person perspective of your ship/fleet. So you are no almighty emperor who can control every corner of his empire instantly. But you fly a ship and build a "space city" (space station?) with it so you are always "in the middle of action". Then you construct different stations in neighbouring sectors and increase your sphere of influence (your empire) this way. It can be bit tedious and annoying to have to fly to a mining station just to upgrade it. But it forces you to think about your actions and weigh your options carefully. Your main task is to manage resources as they are needed to construct and upgrade your buildings and stations. Also you need lots of money so you usually sell them on the open market. The other part is flying around, collection resources, do "missions" and defend your empire. The fighting needs some practice but is well done from my POV. Positions and directions are important so when you fire your missiles on a target in a bad angle they will miss it and you wasted the shot. On the other hand you can also try to avoid fire this way. You have to constantly press the RMB to steer your ship thats the only issue with controls I have. What annoys me with this game: No manual so it is not really clear what can be done. You have to learn by doing. Wiki is basically empty. Bugs. Had several "overlay" issues where the main menu was about the game and I could control neither. Also had a crash of my system (reboot). Cheating AI. It seems the AI does not have to fly around like you to do stuff. Clear disadvantage for human player. Stupid AI. They often attack a mining station, are defeated and send the next fleet right away. This forces you to stay there with your fleet so you cannot fly to your city to repair, manage and buy new ships. Why can't you built turrets to defend your assets? Predictable AI. When you share a border with an AI faction you can bet they attack you soon. There seem to be just rivals and no strategic decisions. They even declare war on me when they are clearly in inferior position. But what annoys me most is the diplomacy system. When an AI faction declares war on me noone cares. When they are stronger they try to extort money from me to end this war. When I'm stronger they offer money. But when I don't want to end the war to show them how stupid they are ALL OTHER factions consider me warmonger and declare war on me and wipe me from the map. So I have no opportunity to make a campaign and destroy an opponent or conquer some sectors at least. And the worst thing is when the AI does this noone cares. Clearly unfair and hinders me to play the game like I want to. So if you want to experience the new concept give it a try on sale. But when you expect "fair play" from a game avoid it. Note: I play in Steam Offline Mode so my playtime may not be properly counted. I have played at least 10 hours.

beyond sol is an ok game the game is based around a single ship, your ship, a fleet of ships that escorts you build up as you build up your strength and a city. the game is focused around you upgrading your systems and weapons. The local solar system is your sandbox, and you decide to intervene or the ai will decide for you, as you start there will be others in the system with you gunning for the same territory. pro's - AI cities evolve over time, and will start wars with each other. - Combat is easy - Anyone can pickup the game(boardgame-like feel) - Required specification for the game are fairly low by today's standards - multiplayer, any amount of players can join your world con's - Grindy gameplay, you do the same things for hours to get other things. - Hard starting the game - Devs moved on to making a game that plays the same but pirate theme. - no modding - locked perspective(can be disabled in config files) - dead community - multiplayer has a decade old system for connecting so not alot of poeple will want to play my personal feelings about the game
i liked playing the game, but the only thing keeping me playing the game was the constant weekly updates and since the devs have moved on to something else(EARLY SIMILAR). i have lost the love i had for this game, and the contend(the repeatable missions, and ships) of the game lost it's interest a day after they came out, and since the online community never developed beyond the "THIS IS BROKEN" so no-one wanted to play... then there is the part that there is no modding beyond completely breaking the game and rebuilding it...
srry for spelling in advance lol at first this game was awsome, but then it started to get bad. theres no story, the enemy factions are easy to defeat and you can just kill them when there tiny, the fighting is meh, theres not much thats great with this game othere then the satisfaction of destroing citys. also the devs abandoned us with a half fineshed game that COULD have been great.

This is one of these sad situations in which you wanted to love a game, but it makes an effort to annoy you. Beyond Sol is a mix between Top-Down Space Sims and 4X, a rather rare (and amazing mix), in a lightweight implementation.
The Good
The game has a solid foundation, and is probably the fastest Space-Sim-with-4X-component to learn and start playing. Solid and Straightforward Combat is straightforward, there's a decent amount of upgrades that can let you tailor your ship to your needs or playstyle, there's varying amounts of activity: random events that can include resource-rich comets, bounty hunting missions, responding to distress signals or joining an on-going battle. There's no bugs or apparent lack of polish. Light-4X and Citybuilding 4X elements involve building 'fleets', diplomacy, trading and war. For a space game (which are usually niche, therefore clunky and convoluted), Beyond Sol has a remarkably simple and functional building system: you snap things where they fit, and you're done. You build Military Bases/Mining Bases/Radar Stations in the middle of a sector (a hex, on the map) and you're done. This makes it so you're always on the move, always doing something worthwhile, which is usually not the case in a large part of space games. Satisfying action Most importantly: killing enemies, building well, and overall learning to play with the best strategies feel satisfying - which is the most important thing for this sort of game. Extra credits Praise must also be given to the fact that this was made by a small team (one person, as far as I know), in a short budget and time. This is amazing in an age of eternal Early Access of 20+ man teams with funding beyond necessary. And the game also has multiplayer, which is such a rare thing for this type of game! All of this makes it frustrating and sad not to recommend the game.
The Bad
All the goodness mentioned above makes the first couple hours of the game feel great if you're into Space Sims and Top-Down Shooters. However, as you advance a bit into the game, it immediately falls flat, as everything is the game feels like a chore in order to grind money for upgrades and City Building. Trading is a Chore Trading is 100% hit-and-miss: there's no indication of prices (directly tied to supply/demand) other than extremely rare "surplus" or "lacking" events. As trading is the fastest way to make money, the game becomes a Space NPC Simulator in which you fly around in a convoy, buying low and selling high with no idea of where to buy, where to sell, and why prices and stock are the way they are. Empires that don't produce Titanium will, for some reason, have random a surplus of Titanium. Warfare is a Chore Wars are fought in similar fashion to Grand Strategy games, in which the more damage you inflict, the more "Warscore" you get. Higher war score = higher war reparations (losing side pays you for peace), which is usually not even enough to pay for your [constant] losses. If you don't accept the enemy peace treaty after you did some damage (killed 2-3 buildings or stations), you are punished by making every other faction in the world hate you for being a warmonger. This can result in an instant mess / loss of the game if you're not aware of that. If you do accept the Peace Treaty, you have to wait 20 minutes before declaring war to that faction again. And they probably will declare war on you once the 20 minutes are over, because now they hate you. It makes the whole construction of a fleet, upgrading your ship, and building your empire feel worthless. Diplomacy is a Chore Sending gifts, trading eventually with a faction, flying around and helping in battes and distress calls is the only way to raise diplomacy. This feels cool in the beggining, but when you are fighting 2 wars, dealing with pirate bases, trying to make enough money to scare off invaders..it becomes hard to find time to personally go help another faction. It feels weird having an empire and fleets that won't help on-demand. The World is Dead Although the game shouldn't be bashed for this (due to scope, funding and time commitments), it feels weird that you are the only 'real' ship doing stuff in the world. Everything else, other than the static AI fleets that mostly react to in-game events, is random and has no inherent meaning. An example of this is when you respond a distress call and you find that the Freighter under attack is from YOUR faction. Who is that trader? Where did it come from? Where it is going? A living, simulated world is not an easy task to tackle, but I believe the issue must be mentioned. The more you play, the more awkward and repetitive it feels. Nothing is True Similar to the point above, AI factions will grow with no explanation of where they acquired their money or resources. Factions with 5 resource spots might grow as fast as factions with 0-1 resource spots, making the game feel shallow and just plain wrong. Do note that none of these issues - that outright kill the fun, depending on your expectations - were caused by lack of funding or development time (except for things that involve more simulation). The way Trading and Warfare is handled, for instance, were awkward design decisions that feel like are in place to artificially prolong games. An example situation is that destroying one of 10 AI empires (a common goal) will take forever and is just not worth the money for the time.
Conclusion
As I mentioned, I'd love to simply recommend this game. Space games are my main thing, and I throw money at developers of the genre whenever I'm able. I write reviews for the genre whenever I'm able. The reason for that is because I want to see the genre evolve, as it's very niche. Beyond Sol is not a situation in which I hate the game, it's a situation in which I feel sad as just a few tweaks could have made the game much more solid, and very fun. It could've been an indie gem of the genre. If players were able to mod the game, an insane amount of content and changes could be made. To me, it feels even worse that the developer simply moved on - I seriously hope the concept is either revisited, or the lessons learned are implemented on his new project - Pirates of the Polygon Sea. My suggestion is to check out Unending Galaxy. Although there's a difference in scope, it's a similar game without the cons listed above. Thanks for reading!

I will update my review if I receive satisfactory technical support. I was loving the game, even though it crashed on occasion. Now I am experiencing a serious bug. I can't access my profile. I can create a new profile, but all of my saves and work would be lost. I can see the old profile, but when I click it, the screen just reverts to a default 'new profile'. I have emailed the company and posted on the forum. Nothing back yet, but I'll be happy to change my review if I can actually play the game. Edit: Tried to restart the game, reboot the system, and reinstall the game. Each time, same problem. Edit 2: Zero tech support response. No community support available. I've since lost other worlds and profiles. It's crazy how easily corrupted the files become from a simple crash -- and more importantly, don't dare leave malwarebytes active when you launch the game. Guaranteed file corruption. Every. Time. There's no auto backup, even though it would be simple to implement. I've started manually backing up profile files. tl;dr: I went from loving the gameplay to rage quit due to fatal glitches.
