Age of Empires II: Definitive Edition - Lords of the West Funciones

Welcome to Lords of the West, the first new official expansion to Age of Empires II: Definitive Edition. Challenge friends with two additional civilizations as well as new units and technologies. Battle your way across Western Europe and the Mediterranean with three new campaigns, subjugating your opponents by means of sheer military might and diplomatic prowess or through overwhelming economic and cultural power!

2 New Civilizations

Burgundians - Rise from a mere duchy to the marvel of Western Europe through economic might, cultural achievement, and the use of advanced military technology and tactics. The Burgundian unique unit is the Coustillier, a cavalry unit that utilizes a powerful shock attack when charging into battle.

Sicilians - Experience the diverse cultures and martial spirit of the Mediterranean's crossroads as you build one of the most coveted kingdoms of medieval Europe. The Sicilian unique unit is the Serjeant, a hardy infantry unit that can construct the formidable Donjon.

3 New, Fully Voiced Campaigns

Edward Longshanks - A bitter hostage of rebel barons, Edward Longshanks vows to reclaim his birthright and lead a shattered England to unprecedented heights of prestige and fortitude. A shrewd commander and cunning politician, his merciless methods are effective yet amoral. Follow him as his thirst for power and glory takes him throughout England, Wales, Scotland, and even on Crusade! In this campaign, you will play as the Britons.

The Grand Dukes of the West - For decades, the dukes of Burgundy have been embroiled in a bloody struggle over control of the mad French king using their cunning, military prowess, and immense wealth. However, as the blood that they spill is paid for with blood of their own, their focus turns increasingly northwards as they aim to create a kingdom of their own. In this campaign, you will play as the Burgundians.

The Hautevilles - Robert de Hauteville left Normandy in 1047 CE with a small robber band. Within a century, members of his family became dukes in Italy, princes in the Holy Land, and even kings of Sicily. Join these intrepid Norman adventurers as they fuse three cultures into Europe’s most tolerant and sophisticated kingdom. In this campaign, you will play as the Sicilians.

Hell yeah, two new civilizations which I will suck at immensely.

While I like that they're adding new civs, the campaigns need revoicing. That's not how any of those places are pronounced! We get it, voice actors are expensive, but measure twice, cut once, y'know? And the pathfinding has somehow gotten worse instead of better?

Keeping AoE2 alive means new content, regular income flow for devs to keep the game up and running. If the choice is paying for new content every 6-18 months or paying for online services I'll take the new content anyday. Over all the new civs need some changes, to many powerful UU and UT. Or maybe they could add some cool features to the older civs.

Loving the new expansion. The 2 new Civs could have a huge immediate impact on the multiplayer meta. Before everyone says they are completely OP, they have only been available in the game for a matter of hours, and it will take time for players to find the most optimal strategies both in terms of using them and fighting against them. My opinions on the 2 new civs so far: Burgundians out-Frank the Franks earlier game seemingly as a Fast-Castle Boom or Knight Rush civ, and have a killer early economy due to early techs, but might fall behind in longer games due to less optimal Paladins. Haven't experimented with their unique units late game though, so I might not be completely on the ball there. Meanwhile, Sicilians...are a lot of fun. I wonder if they will be the new meme civ. Right now, one of their obvious strategies is somewhat similar to a hybrid of Goth spam & Inca tower rush, both at the same time, due to the fact that their unique Serjeant infantry unit, trainable in the Feudal age, can also build and repair the building they are trained in (the Donjon, the Sicilian equivalent of a tower). However it also seems that they might be quite strong on water and with siege, but I didn't play long enough to find out. Most likely, once people work out how to counter the strategy I mentioned earlier effectively, they will be easier to defeat than Burgundians. In terms of the campaign content, I haven't given the campaigns a go yet, but I am hugely looking forward to trying them. All in all, I absolutely love it and will continue to support the game should more DLC expansion packs be released. I haven't felt so happy about this game since previous expansion pack launches (and the launch of DE.)

TL;DR: This is a must-have expansion for any Age of Empires II fans, complete with 2 new civs and 3 new campaigns. I was so excited when I saw the developers decided to make some more civilizations and content to this game, and I was not disappointed. The civs are pretty interesting and have some cool bonuses, and they really are a great addition to the game. While they may be slightly unbalanced now (as of January 26 2021), they will be fixed in the future. Anyway though, the Devs are doing a great job, and I'd definitely recommend all AoE2 owners to pick this up!

I was really hyped and still am to play the campaigns and to experience the new civs. However, it's currently made the game unplayable for me. I can't stay in the game for longer than 3 minutes without it freezing and crashing. I would gladly recommend it, if I had the chance to play it.

Honestly it pains me to write a negative review for this game. As a veteran Age Of Empires/Mythology player and huge fan I admire the attention given to this game and the regular updates and patches. However after installing this DLC my game has become totally unplayable, crashing after 3 minutes in game. I really do hope this issue is addressed soon or resolved. Afterwards I'd love to try out the DLC and share my opinion.

I could forgive the game ruining crashes and out of synch issues, UPDATE: Still sometimes there, but less often I could forgive a civilisation that overpowers all others with a broken unique unit, UPDATE: Definitely still there I could forgive the bug that allowed you to delete opponent's walls, UPDATE: Patched out I could forgive the broken tech tree and Lithuanian Mega-Knights, UPDATE: Patched out I could never forgive the way that Edward, voice acted King of England, pronounces "Worcester" and "Gloucester". UPDATE: Though apparently I'm wrong on this... See comments I don't mind paying £8 for a game I have sunk so many hours into over the last lockdown year, but I am disappointed with the effort put in to justify that £8. I want to give a positive review, because aoe2:de has been a huge boost to the game I've played for 20 years, and I much prefer an annual DLC to some other funding models. But... if this is the product, I cannot do so in good faith. UPDATE: I still feel uneasy recommending it as a "good" DLC, but the speed at which the developers have fixed some of the main issues and the binary nature of the steam review system is making me change my mind on that at least partly. If you play the game enough to feel like you can splash out on this DLC then I would recommend it, but for a casual player, I would still say it is a poor offering. Also, no extra real world maps :(

Pro -Two new civs: Sicilians and Burgundians and the promise of maybe getting more later on (see Gamestar Interview about the expansion) They're very different and interesting. The Sicilians e.g. have a military unit which can built a defensive structure which can again build this unit. The next two links showcase the civs and their boni in all details: https://ageofempires.fandom.com/wiki/Burgundians https://ageofempires.fandom.com/wiki/Sicilians -Fully voiced campaigns and unit voice lines -Three new campaigns (among those an English one (the other perspective of the William Wallace campaign )). The English cities are weirdly pronounced due to the fact that it was the way those cities were pronounced in the past, so it's actually quite a nice little additional historical touch: https://www.forgottenempires.net/dev-blog-whats-up-with-the-pronunciation-of-the-english-cities-in-the-lords-of-the-west-campaigns -New achievements. -New unique castle models for both Sicilians and Burgundians (sadly not for the other civs) -More to enjoy of an already great game -The satisfaction of supporting some amazing game devs who listen to their community and provide new game modes, campaigns, events without any charge. Proof: the Lithuanian Relic bug as well as the Stone wall gate bug which sadly occured after fixing an exploit which has been in the game for years has been fixed in just a few days. Balance issues will be fixed too. It takes time to estimate how strong a civ is, though I'm pretty confident that the Coustilier might need a slight stat and prize nerf :) Neutral -No new music (don't care that much about it but would have been nice. Contra -The prize to be honest. In Switzerland, I'm paying 14 bucks for less content than former expansions. I know I'm in the most expensive store front in regards to this DLC, but still, I think the prize might be a bit on the higher side. Considering that what it offers is fully fleshed out, I personally am a bit more lenient but still, I hope future DLCs offer a bit more or are slightly less expensive on the Swiss store front. Though to the defence of the devs, I still preordered it and offered it to some of my Steam friends ;) -No new architecture sets, though still two unique castle models. -Compared to former expansion packs to the HD Edition (Age of Empires II (2013) to be precise), it's rather expensive for what it adds. It's not very surprising though considering that the Definitive Edition came with an expansion pack for free as well as all the QOL improvements. Also the Western Europe theme has been used enough in my opinion. I really don't see what you could add else in Western Europe which would make sense as addition. If we should be lucky enough to get another expansion, I hope it will have a different theme, hopefully outside of Europe. -No new Real World maps. Those are always my favourite :( I'm hoping for an African/American and/or Indian expansion which hopefully will be a bit more beefy than this one and also feature new architecture sets. Those are always the best part of an expansion. TL;DR: Overall I'd say it's a worthy purchase if you want to support the AOE2:DE project, considering all the love and effort goes into it, even though the DLC alone, comparing it to former Age of Empires 2 expansion might be a bit expensive for what it offers. It might seem more reasonably prized if we compare it to what AOE2:DE on its own offers (all the content Age of Empires (2013) has including the 3 DLCs as well as a brand new expansion and if that wasn't enough better graphics and QoL) improvements. You can see it as thank you to the devs :)
