Recursos do SPRAWL

Escape the walled city and take on the militarized government of the sprawl. Fueled by the blood of your enemies and a mysterious voice in your head, make your way towards the spire to topple whatever lays within.

SPRAWL is a hardcore retro FPS set in an endless cyberpunk megalopolis. Here the streets are your playground. The dark alleys and dilapidated apartments are all surfaces compatible with your “icarus” cybernetic implant. This implant allows you to perform gravity defying acrobatic wall-running maneuvers. Your enemies, the militarized police of the sprawl, stand no chance. Not only that, but their blood fuels this same implant, vastly enhancing your reaction time. On command you can enter a state in which even bullets move at a snail's pace. A vast arsenal of weapons lie at your disposal, the armies of the corporate government are endless, but be warned...

the sprawl eventually consumes us all.

I've followed the development of this game since it was first announced back in early 2021 or so, since it ticks all the boxes I want. Nostalgic Y2K era marketing, loud soundtrack that's like if you got a 90s era rave musician to collaborate with Mick Gordon, expansive cities and levels inspired by Ghost in the Shell mixed with Half-Life 2, Kowloon Walled City and EYE Divine Cybermancy, and gameplay that's Quake's movement mixed with Titanfall 2's wallrunning and Max Payne's slow-down. It seemed like the ultimate game, suited specifically for me, and it finally came out and I'm really enjoying it. All those boxes are pretty much ticked, though there are still tons of issues I'd like to see resolved. Aside from some bugs and glitches (including one were your ears gets blasted to oblivion when you load into a level), there's also issues with the game having this weird sense of emptiness (not in a creepy way but in a "where the hell is the pizzazz?" kind of way), mainly due to the game, excluding enemies and the protag, having only like 3 proper characters (REAPER, The Politician and FATHER) and even though the hidden PDAs with QR codes and info on the loading screens give you tons of info about who these, excluding that their appearance is very short and it just makes the worldbuilding feel a little dull. And getting into !! SPOILER TERRITORY !! - The final couple of levels felt SUPER dull and honestly I have suspicion it might be because of time & budget issues, as you shut down FATHER's cores then fight a big bug ship that fires bullets like it's a Touhou boss, before killing it and causing the SPIRE to explode with you dying on it, kinda like Half-Life 2's ending with the Citadel. It felt super dull, but that doesn't mean SPRAWL is garbage or anything. I liked it, and I was okay with what it was after 3 years of waiting, but dammit this game needs TONS of TLC just so it doesn't feel super empty feeling despite the trailers showing it's pizzazz. The developers did a good job, but I'd just wish more was in this game.

I love it, it's very dynamic, wall running may feel overwhelming at first but after a while you get used to it

Only gripe so far is the wall running can be a bit infuriating some times but that doesn't matter if you manage to use the shotgun to just skip past a lot of it

    Half Life 2 + Titanfall 2 + Doom Eternal?

It's a competent and enjoyable indie fps, this is not without some caveats, but it does a lot more good things than bad. Good movement, satisfying gunplay, pumping soundtrack and fantastic art direction. SPRAWL is a worthy addition to your boomer shooter collection. It's fast paced, the movements feel really good and when you master the gunplay and movements it's an absolute blast to play. However it's far from perfect, the level design is interesting but sadly it's too confusing and it's way too easy to get lost in some areas because there is no clear indication about where we are supposed to go to complete objectives. The enemies AI is not really good, they are pretty much brain dead with bad pathfinding. For some reasons the developers decided to implement a weird auto reload system and somehow thought it would be funny to reduce ammo pick ups to the minimum in some maps. You will eventually get used to it after a while but personally I am not a fan of it and running out of ammo almost constantly is not what I consider fun or engaging gunplay. It is worth mentioning there is still few collision bugs where you can get stuck in geometry and some script bugs that may not trigger correctly but I'm pretty sure these will be patched soon. Even with all these issues I think SPRAWL is still well worth playing as it is fairly priced in my opinion, just don't expect the Ultrakill or Turbo Overkill killer and you will most likely have a good time playing this. If you enjoy cyberpunk aesthetics, indie games and retro fps with high emphasis on movements then in my eyes it's a sure buy. With the recent release of Quake II remaster, AMID EVIL - The Black Labyrinth, Turbo Overkill 1.0 and now Sprawl we can say retro fps enjoyers are eating good this month. I haven't played much of SPRAWL so far (at beginning of episode 2 atm) but can already say it's better than Trepang2 and Ghostrunner if that can be of any help. Will add more to this review later, and edit rating accordingly once finished, cannot really play as much as I'd like atm.

    Rating 7/10.

If you just want to shoot some guys in slow motion then I think you can have a good time. But there's no incentive to actually play the game in a fun way. The encounter and enemy design doesn't really encourage you to use any of the fun traversal mechanics, so if you want to pop off and make fun plays you kind of have to figure it out yourself. The fun platforming is just a way to get you from point A to B, completely disconnected from any idea of combat. They made all these big arenas, and they gave you all these movement options, but enemies will just gather in a group and let you circle strafe them completely unharmed. I finish every fight either within a tiny circle, a minuscule percentage of the arena, or I just run up to enemies, stand in front of their faces with bullet time activated, and shoot their heads. Then I wallrun to the next arena and do the same. The hit registration also feels awful and there are a lot of sound bugs. The game is boring to play and occasionally physically painful to listen to. I was really looking forward to this, and this is the most disappointed I've been in a game in a while.

Been following this project on Twitter for the last year, super happy it's finally out, congratulations! Finished up E2M2, pretty cool romp so far, soundtrack is absolutely insane, love every track, sound design on the weapons is big and punchy, world design flows quite nice for the most part, got turned around once in E1M3 Only gripes with the game so far is the railgun doesn't seem to pierce, weird choice to do that. And the whole QR code system for lore-building leading to external sites worries me if, say, I or someone else wants to play this in the future and the site is taken offline, or worse, taken over by malicious site-owners. Maybe some sort of localised version stored in the game directory or a check system for in-game log storing would help with this?

Game is unfortunately too short for $14.99 base price, I had completed the game twice now already upon making this review, once on Normal, another on Hard. The core gameplay and mechanics are fundamentally enjoyable to play with, but this game could've really done with another 3-4 hours of missions, will change my review to positive if the game ends up getting enough content to make it worth the price, I would highly recommend it, but as it stands, there is about 3 1/2 hours of actual gameplay. My major gripe with this game is that lore entries can't be read in-game, you must scan a QR code ... something I don't feel like doing in the middle of the game, as the major issue with lore entries in any game is attempting to place them in a way that doesn't totally disrupt the flow of the game - scanning a QR code to read a lore entry totally disrupts the flow of the game.

game is ok, but there's kind of a mountain of mild nitpicks that make me recommend against it for the most part whenever the game starts and any level changes, there is an enormously loud "CRUNCH" noise of a gun being cycled. this is independent from volume controls, and causes me physical pain every time it plays the walljumping is really hard to get used to, and the game doesn't go out of its way to explain things like "you can gain height by rejumping against the same wall" or "you need to kick off of corners like so in order to gain height." that's fine when the platforming is built to accommodate this, but the expectations of the platforming are way too tight for how precise it expects you to be, especially without an edge clamber of ANY KIND. i found myself frustrated and baffled until i figured out the precise movement tech the game expects from you- and that's really bad in the *tutorial* of a movement shooter. the weapons feel incredible. the combat is good and the AI are really good- i have absolutely NO complaints on this front, which is why i had difficulty deciding whether this was a recommend or not but...... it is the most annoying bullshit in the world for the lore to make me pull out a qr code scanner mid level to read the lore. having to take a minute to get my phone, boot up a QR code app, and then load an HTML page that will one day be offline and unreadable even when the game is still playable is truly the most annoying thing in the world. this was the straw of annoyance that really broke my back. if you're willing to put up with a lot of mild jank for extremely satisfying gunplay like i am, go for it. otherwise, maybe prioritize spending your money on a more well known movement shooter first.
