My first impressions: -The building system is like Surviving Mars but you place the walls, staircases, doors. You can make one big building with multiple stories or a bunch of smaller buildings. -Trading system is similar to Port Royale with orbits instead of distance. -Diplomacy system similar to XCOM, you depend on it entirely. -If you play this with the lowest graphic settings, it doesn't necessarily look bad, it just becomes pixelized and it looks a bit like the old school master of orion. This is the first time i see a game that becomes "vintage" when on the lowest settings. This was just released as early access and is very much unfinished, everything I mentioned is clunky and unpolished, so I will adjust my review according to future updates. But the things that are offered by this game would be uniquely awesome so the 15$ is completely worth the gamble for me.

Hopefully they do not abandon this game, it's unfinished and clunky like looking around can be a pain, But still with that i have been really enjoying the so far.

So, this game , is really good, the tutorial is vague, i agree, and the learning curve can be frustrating but if you are the gamer that has patience and you dont look for hand outs you will get past it and EVERYTHING will be easy, Its one of those learning curves where it all seems like too much but once you figure one thing out you start realizing how things work and everything you learn just makes learning the next thing easier and easier. Your first save/base may be a bust, try again with what you learned and then BOOM you have a full on colony on mars, then you start teaching yourself about space stations and then space travel and then interstellar travel,<--- see its like that. The detail of this game is superb and the OST is relaxing, If your scared to buy now at least consider wish listing it and wait for a sale and give it a shot, im not disappointed

As a mature PC gamer (since the 8bit PC Commodore64 era) I have played many builder/management games and often get bored half way through - realising that all the rules and challenges are somewhat artificial and feel fake. This destroys my feeling of achievement and i often abandon the game having lost the incentive. Solargene despite being Early Access does feel very real, and that is rare these days. Pros: < > Solargene so far has been feeling more like a simulator and less than a game - despite it not being finished and needing structural integrity and more balancing. I love the feeling of real achievement even at this early stage of the game development. < > The fact that it is very educational as a matter of process adds to the feeling of actual achievement. Even if you "lose" you wont be as dumb as you was before : )) < > I enjoy the early start of a game - and often multiple starts, over and over once I learned a game mechanic the hard way ...so I see multiple restarts as a learning curve - not failing. Life is like that often. Cons: < > User interface is clunky and mouse control awkward still. < > Missing structural integrity takes away from the simulation credibility. < > Popup windows of materials, prices, weights and store quantities should be un-dockable so player can get a better overview when ordering shipments. The data needed to make ordering decisions is not available on one screen and required constant opening and closing of windows which is very irritating. Summery: I appreciate Alexander Semenovs's approach and integration of many complex but real life mechanics of engineering, science and biology and the balancing so far. Being the sole developer and publisher has the advantage that his vision for this game has not been watered down or compromised by others with a different vision - and that is refreshing to see and I fully recommend this game/simulator even at the Early Access stage its more of a game than many ever will be.

For a single dev alpha release it is certainly playable and enjoyable. That said you should be aware of a few things: 1) The UI is a bit awful and will need some serious improvement as it is currently not very intuitive and is difficult to navigate 2) Build system is a bit awkward and can be a bit painful 3) Resource requirements are hard to estimate 4) Colonist management is not trivial So while the alpha is fun and if you bear with the hard edges its an interesting experience but do keep in mind that it is very early and definitely still WIP.

TL;DR: It might be a nice game but the sub-par usability kills all the fun for me. I like playing everything that involves space and colony sim, so this looked quite appealing to me. On paper it ticks all the boxes. However the game's usability is so bad, that it kills all the fun for me. This starts with the suboptimal camera control (WASD is basically not usable as it scrolls way too fast) continues with hard to read icons especially for base building, missing tooltips, hard to read fonts etc. It lacks even basic quality of life functions like buying the needed resources for a building without having to write the list of items down and then manually filling an order with all the items. The tutorial is just a few screens of text and while it is better than nothing, it's not integrated into the game. I can forgive this (I have played the X-series where tutorials are also not very well integrated into the game) if it would at least be servicable. At one point in the tutorial the game instructs you to buy stuff for your first colony buildings and gives you a rundown of what to buy. However when you open the buy menu, it overlaps the tutorial window and hides the information you need to enter. This just shows how usability is really not there at all. I want to focus on managing the growth and success of my colony, not fight the UI. I want to make meaningful decisions, not hand-write and calculate the number of resources I need to buy on a sheet of paper to then enter them into a buy dialog. That really is monkeywork the game can do, there is no gameplay value whatsoever in it. The factions remain elusive, as a starting player I have no clue what the factions are good for and why I would want their favor. It would probably also have been better to use some fictional factions rather than real existing countries, given the current world stage. I play space games to explore how a better future for mankind could look like - not to rehash the current, sad state of affairs on planet Earth. Other negative points were the really annoying music (way too much bombast with the same 4 chords in different variations) and the less than great performance given the only ok-ish graphic fidelity. So right now I cannot recommend this. This game needs a total overhaul of its usability so you can actually get to managing your colonies before being frustrated by the sub-par usability and it needs _something_ to pull the player in and interest him into what's going on. As it stands, there is no pull here that can make me overlook the usability. Given that there is only one developer behind this I also don't think the game will reach such a state anytime soon, so I chose to refund it. I would love to be wrong here as I really love playing everything space and colony sim.

Micromanagement in this game is just disgusting (Mostly due to controls) + It's not making sense if the game has no realism in it. Why even bother with supply ships if there is no travel time? The ships arrive in an hour, You can receive at least 12 of them at a time, so they aren't a bottleneck as well, what are they, exactly? There are barely any lifesupport system to take care of before dropping your colonists, yet, somehow there are 5 or 6 types of kitchens, 1 for each cuisine (Russian, American, European etc.). Why? Just make three types of food - poor, normal, luxury. You have android robots from the start of the game that can cook and farm, but you do not have one for mining. Colonists have to go outside and sit there mining rocks, while cook robot is chilling inside. I'm not stopping to play this game because of it hilariously bad interface and controls, not because of lack of automation, interesting assets (or lack of crucial assets that should be in the game such as construction bots), choice overload (Yes, I do not have to have 20 types of walls, 6 types of doors I only need a couple of both) unnecessary complexity and micro. I am stopping because I just can not find any consistency in the lore of this game, It just does not make sense. I can't believe I was thinking Surviving Mars was unrealistic, this game is much less realistic than that.

The game has some interesting aspects but the UI entirely puts me off, it's very unintuitive and annoying to use, the graphics are decent although it tends to blur at times for no reason, the tutorial is quite lacking and provides barely enough detail to get a colony started, overall I wouldn't recommend it until the UI is completely overhauled.

23 min. refund. the tutorial is lacking in my opinion. watched a few videos before buying and wasnt sure it was for me. does not hold your hand in any way. the tutorial is all text, at its largest it might be 10 pt font. ok, read , remember then do. first thing I think was to establish a colony, just a guess. how to get resources...launch a rocket, i think, stuff you may want to order, list of 8 things with how much you will need. cool. the list is blocked by the order menu which i could not find how to move it down a few inches...so , write down the list, or input numbers, go back and remember next amount and repeat..not sure. feels like homework or work or a test in my opinion. Looks like a fun or cool game in videos, as someone who loves complicated thinking games with in depth details , this one was beyond my patients. Seemed harder than pharmacy school to me and that was hard.

This Game has great Potential, unfortunately Its not yet Ready, in the 10 hours of playing it I have spent more time restarting it and loading my save after it has crashed, and whats worse there is no save button, so when it crashes you often find your self having to redo a lot of the thing you have been building, the only way to save the game (aside from the Autosave) is to exit to the main menu and the reloading your save. So put it on your Wish list and try it in a few months, hopefully the Dev's will have had the oppertunity to Iron out the kinks by then
