Excruciatingly boring, poorly scripted start that demonstrated wonky controls and a really bad saving system. This is probably the earliest I've posted a review but I just cannot bother any longer.

Great ride, start to finish. Took me about 7 hours. Ran great on the Deck, just some minor crashes after coming back on from Sleep Mode. I won't spoil the game cause it's quite short, but I'll say this: the game is hard, I missed a ton of my shots cause of the analog stick aim and some of the 'minor' enemies deal way too much damage for their size. I spent a good deal of retries on certain sections with those enemies and it got really frustrating. Aside from that I had a really good time, the story doesn't take itself too seriously, the inspirations are really obvious but they were able to create pretty unique feeling setting here. The horror elements were seriously good and major props to the pixel artist/animator and artist, the visuals went together hand-in-hand. The gameplay was tight. The music was really tense at times and holy shit did it get you pumping at some sections. Highly recommended at full price. If you guys were serious about the sequel, then I'm down, can't wait to see how it continues.

Doesn't have the finesse of games like "Hotline Miami", which it is trying to emulate. Also isn't enough arcady to be a decent top down shooter. I stopped playing at the forced stealth segment, which forces you to deal with trial and error and finding a secret path, which is the only way to proceed.

So, one way you can tell a game is good, is when you buy it, on a whim, at the same time as another game that you were actually anticipating, and you end up playing that impulse-purchase game more. And enjoying it. I bought this at the same time as Cross Code, which I'd been keeping an eye on for a while. I've only put an hour into Cross Code at time of writing, but I've finished Garage and had a (mostly) great time. Garage is a top-down shooter with a 'cone of vision' mechanic. It feels like a cross between Hotline Miami and Teleglitch. You cant take much damage, you'll die and retry a lot, and it's full of low-fi violence. It also has moments of humor, moments of weirdness, puzzles, and a decent mix-up of combat encounters. I really only have 2 complaints. 1. There is one single section where the save-points are spaced a bit too far apart. That was annoying. 2. Sometimes the game will spawn enemies behind you, which given the 'cone of vision' you have, can feel cheaper than usual. The section I mentioned in point 1 does this, which makes it doubly annoying. Still, other than that one section, Garage was a lot of fun, and I'd happily buy a sequel.

So this game is pretty fun but holy shit is it frustrating to play. lets do pros first. Pros 1. Very hotline miami in its plot of craziness and the kills are just as gorey. 2. shooting things is fun most of the time though your guy cant aim for shit sometimes and it gets you completely fucked. 3. tones well though if youve played like an doom game its scary for the first 10 seconds then you get an gun and its not anymore. 4. Some of the jokes are pretty funny and meta i love me some meta humor. cons 1. Butch is probably one of the stupidest mcs ive played in an game. Hes literally running around killing zombies, mutants in an crazy lab and is constantly telling the rebel lady that shes lying..it just doesnt god damnit. 2. While the combat can be fun its also pretty bullshit. Rats are probably one of the most broken enemies in the game like why do they do so much fucking damage?! Enemies tend to be accurate gods and butch couldnt shoot an barnside door, Rolling provides no advantage because when you press the key it almost takes an few seconds to roll like its loading the roll so you end up getting hit more instead if you just did normal movement. 3. Chapter 10 looked pretty fun..wish i couldve experienced that but hey jokes right? 4. You know whats not fun when your movement is sorta floaty and you have no real basis of what an line of sight is..an fucking stealth section. That was some fun shit right there i love spending an hour on broken stealth mechanics. 5. Some doors are just invisible i felt like an few times i would spend 5 to 10 mins trying to find an door by walking into the walls before i found an green or locked door. Overall this game is funish but if you wanna get an game with floaty, unreliable combat, an broken stealth section, and an story thats honestly just to over the place. Get it in on sale

Thank you to the developer Zombie Dynamics and publisher tinyBuild for providing a really good action game for me to escape, explore and enjoy. Another hidden gem amongst the dozens of games released every week today, Garage Bad Trip is deserving of every player's attention. It’s story is straight B movie(as it says in the game synopsis- the shortest synopsis ever for a game btw) and is as ridiculous as is the name. The action is fast, slow and tense at times and it’s all set to a great musical score with some amazing pixel art graphics. There is just enough weapons, blood, gore, zombies, two-headed dogs and fcking rats to stimulate that killer in all of us. In Garage Bad trip you play as Butch a drug dealer who stumbles(literally) out of the trunk of a car and into the underground facility called the Garage. You come to find out a madman(Demihovsky) who was once controlled by the Corp.(these guys again) is reanimating the dead in order to create the perfect six armed human race. A perfect B movie, video game setup that would make Uwe Bolle drool. The story is told with high res portraits of each character and text and it's all fantastically non PC especially once Butch starts interacting with the Anaconda. It's not too bad as it fills in a lot of family backstory for Butch but it neglects Demihovsky after the initial introduction on a TV and at the end, it just ends with a “to be continued” screen. To be true B movie though it needed the obligatory sex scene after Butch and the Anaconda met, i mean if you are going to commit to B move/VHS, commit all the way. I kind of roll my eyes anymore when i see another game with pixel art, but damn this is more unique than most as it seems to be more high resolution? The use of main colors against dreary low lit rooms make each area pop and the VHS overlay that seems you are watching a 80’s movie adds a cool effect. There are tons of little details that are appreciated like the reloading of weapons, kicking in doors and the simple sound and visual effect of your axe grinding against a wall. Blood and gore is everywhere and each room tells a story. Pretty damn impressive. Sound is also really good with each weapon giving a nice audio punch and the first time you hear a zombie scream will make you nervous. You will usually hear a constant low buzz, and little drips as you wander the facility with some small insects sounds but it’s overshadowed by a mix of industrial, synthesizers, and grinding soundtrack that really makes the mood. Its a solid mix of simple eerie cords as you explore and then thumping beats and screeches when encounters happen. It's really odd no soundtrack is available and from the credits it looks to be maybe be all original which adds to the impressiveness of the title.(I could be wrong in this analysis) As for performance, Ultrawide is supported and the game played fantastic at 2560x1080 and 144 fps. However, graphic options are totally bare bones with only choices of resolution and quality(High/medium). There is no remapping of keys nor any indicator of key functions anywhere except for a controller AND it includes a picture of controller functions. It's really strange mouse and KB are neglected in almost every way other than its available to use as it is by far superior as i tried using both, huge difference. If you have played top down/ twin stick shooters you will have no problems here. In Garage BT there are 12 chapters where you enter a level, kick open some doors, complete some minor tasks, kill enemies, find a key, exit door left. If you die(you will) you will quickly respawn at generous checkpoint. All gear is found on a weapon wheel where you can equip an axe, shotgun, pistol, Uzi, grenades, AK 47 and MP5. The key to survival is making sure ALL weapons are loaded all the time. Most deaths will occur while in a reload, trust me. You do have the ability to roll and there is a stamina penalty effect(no meter) if you roll or punch too many times but its not really a factor. Exploring each level you can find secret stashes for extra story context ,added ammo and gear such as a BP vest for added protection. Levels are not too big but there is enough in each area that exploration and observation is rewarded. The biggest problem for gameplay is the auto lock crosshair that just seems to have a mind of its own on occasion when using a controller and really wish it could just be disabled. Exploring a beautiful, dark, scary environment is only as good as the enemies you will encounter and the Garage does not disappoint. You will be going up against zombies, rats, corp soldiers, a butcher (who throws rats from his stomach?), 2 headed dogs and centipede man whos random direction and fast movement makes them scary AF. One thing that was surprising was using an axe against zombies you can chop off their heads and when using guns you can shoot off limbs. None really pose too much of a threat except at the end boss fight when everything is thrown at you, but once you learn the pattern not too bad. One major issue however is difficulty seem to be completely unbalanced especially at the start when you are stuck with nothing but an axe and rats will kill you in one hit. *The difficulty issue only pertains to hard as i found Easy and Normal both manageable. Once you complete the campaign which took me 8 hrs. doing basically everything, you can retry on a harder difficulty, redo a chapter from a certain checkpoint or try some of the challenge rooms such as axe-man, skirmish, arena, or labyrinth. I really, really wish you could keep all weapons for a new game + mode but always nice seeing additional game modes after the game is complete. I really, really like this game. I love the look, action, and world though wish it would have gone a little more B movie and the controls(controller) were tighter but exploring and killing in the Garage, or anywhere, with a solid soundtrack, just always seems to be a whole lot of fun. Excited to see the next chapter who knows maybe we will move from the Garage to outer space? Similar to games I have played: Hotline Miami, Redeemer, Splatter, Subterrain Played on Benq XR3501 UW 2560x1080 144hz Graphic card AMD R9 390 8G Positives UW @144 FPS Beautiful Pixel Art graphics Good 80’s B story Solid action, exploration Sound and soundtrack Additional modes/ Ch. checkpoint restart Negatives Bare bone graphic and keyboard options “To be continued” ending Auto lock crosshair for controller has a mind of its own Difficulty modes unbalanced No option to buy soundtrack Fck rats

If you think that this is just an Hotline Miami clone, you're wrong. Garage Bad Trip does have its own identity, mainly thanks to the ambience, which is frightening but allows you to feel powerful as well. The story is fine if you enjoy B-movies. Soundtrack is good even tho not as present as I would've like. And then, there's the gameplay... Oh boy is it a love-hate relationship. In most cases it's fine and the game is fun but when you have to make precise movements or when you collide with zombies it's horribly frustrating. Also, what's up with the controls being different during the bike level ? I'm on an AZERTY layout but the game decided that QWERTY was the way to go during that part. Truly made me tilt. But the reason for this review being positive instead of negative is that the good times were way more frequent that the bad ones. Plus the challenges that you unlock during story mode are a nice end game. As closing words, just keep playing even when you just want to uninstall, the game is going to make it back to you. (Also, please read the comments written by Sack Jack below, they give a nice opposite opinion on the game.)

TL;DR Great for intense, fast paced combat with weapons that are satisfying to use. Decent checkpoint placement and death certainty included. ---- Gunplay is what I got this game for and is also what I want to focus on here. The damage delivered per shot is on the high side and all weapons feel powerful. The max amount of ammunition carried at once is severely limited. Ammo is refilled with packs lying the ground (as is health). Therefore it is usually required to use multiple weapons which did works well because every weapon is powerful in specific scenarios. The damage received from enemies depends on the difficulty level (out of 3). Life loss on easy is mostly non critical whereas the player has to be careful on medium - I found to have the best experience on this level. Movement speed is high and the distance between player and enemies changes quickly. Encounters are fast, deadly and positioning makes a huge difference. This sums up to an intense experience with memorable fights in varied levels. With these aspects covered I also want to include a few annoyances: - rolling/dodging cancels reloads which often leads to death in desperate situations - the weapon wheel feels unresponsive and relocates the crosshair so that mouse repositioning is often required after weapon selection - the order of weapons is fixed and unintuitive - no dedicated selection keys per weapon - switching to different button layouts can break the game
